🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Preservation overwrites rows that this save intentionally wrote.

preserveValue replaces the candidate value with the previous raw value whenever the previous row is unresolved. It does not check whether the application just wrote a different value at that key. The values are compared only for equality, so a value written by the application counts the same as one the adapter normalized.

Path 1: Velocity emergency votes fail permanently.

  • Configurate drops a persisted "<key>": null row from memory, so getServerVotes(owner) and getOnlineVotes(owner) do not list that key.
  • persistServerVoteToJsonLocked and persistOnlineVoteToJsonLocked are not blocked by unresolvedSqlBatchIdentity. nextCacheIndex can choose that key for a new emergency vote. Key 0 is the simplest case.
  • In saveDurably, unresolvedRow(JsonNull) returns true. preserveValue then replaces the new vote object with null.
  • saveAndVerifyServerVote reads back null and returns false. The rollback reload() restores the same in-memory gap.
  • Every retry selects the same index and fails again. Votes for that owner accumulate in pending persistence until MAX_PENDING_PERSISTENCE_VOTES is reached.

Path 2: Bungee delivery-state updates are reverted.

  • A SQL twin can be bound to a journal row with invalid batch metadata (sqlTwin.copyCachedVoteBatch(vote) gives -1/-1).
  • updateServerVote and updateOnlineVote rewrite that key through updateServerVoteJson.
  • The row is still unresolved, so preservation restores the old bytes. The RewardDelivered change is lost on disk.
  • The call still reports success, because matches() compares only UUID, Service, Time and VoteId.

A non-object lane or owner in the previous journal has the same effect: preservation replaces every new row under it.

Restore the raw previous value only when the candidate holds the adapter-normalized form of that value. A different candidate value means the application wrote it, so keep the candidate.

Each adapter supplies normalize: Bungee uses the identity function, and Velocity round-trips the value through GsonConfigurationLoader. In Velocity, also include the persisted keys in nextCacheIndex, so a key held by a preserved null row is never reused.

@VotingPlugin/src/main/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/proxy/cache/VoteCacheDurability.java
around lines 124 - 128:
Update preserveValue to restore the previous raw value only when the candidate
matches that value after applying the relevant adapter’s normalization; if the
candidate differs from the normalized form, keep it as an application write.
Pass the appropriate normalization behavior from each adapter, including
Velocity’s dropped-null behavior.
