feat: queue actions while a job is running, with reorder and cancel - #5207
Starting an action while another one runs now queues it instead of showing "X is still running" and dropping the click.
Start-WinUtilJob -QueueIfBusy adds the job to $sync.JobQueue inside the same lock as the busy check, so two quick clicks cannot race. Parameters are captured at click time.
When a job ends, even with an error, the next queued job starts. Nothing starts while the window is closing.
Queued: install, uninstall, AppX install and removal, tweaks run and undo, features, and the config and update buttons. ISO and USB jobs still refuse, since they cannot be safely stacked.
A clock button in the top bar shows how many are waiting. Its dropdown shows the running job and each queued one, with up, down and cancel buttons.
Closing the window while jobs are queued says how many will be discarded, and clears the queue.
Testing
Current local Pester 5.8.0: 1167 passed, 0 failed, 1 existing UAC-dependent skip after integration with main. Current-head contributor CI: 1168 passed, 0 failed, 0 skipped.
New tests cover queueing vs refusing, first-in-first-out order after a failed job, move bounds, cancel, shutdown, the close prompt, each caller's parameter snapshot and the XAML wiring.
Ran the compiled app with placeholder sleep jobs (not committed): the dropdown, reorder, cancel, run order, close prompt, light theme and minimum window width all behaved. No real install or tweak was run through the queue.
Screenshots
Install running with Tweaks, Uninstall and Tweaks waiting. The jobs here are placeholder sleeps run through the real queue, not real installs.
The last Tweaks moved up one place with its arrow button.

Bounded the queue list with scrolling while retaining the running-job header.
Named each queue action for assistive technology using its action and job; native automation peers verify the exposed names before and after reordering.
Rechecked closing state under the queue lock so late callers cannot claim or enqueue work after closing wins.
Captured the package manager for queued upgrades, preserving the requested target and distinguishing queued upgrades for different managers.
Paused queue handoffs during close confirmation so a completed job cannot start different work behind the question; cancellation resumes the queue.
Suppressed only identical consecutive queued requests. Default/Disable/Default retains all three update choices, preserving the requested final state; an additional consecutive Default click is suppressed. Actual button-dispatch regressions cover both cases, and the interleaved regression fails against the old queue-wide comparison.
Windows PowerShell 5.1 compilation and generated-script parsing passed. Pester 5.8.0 passed 1167 tests with no failures and one existing nonadmin headless test skipped because its compiled process would open a UAC prompt. PSScriptAnalyzer 1.20.0 reported no errors (667 warnings and three information diagnostics). The focused job/queue/progress suite passed 100 tests. The direct built-in review found no actionable regressions and passed 126 focused job/queue/shutdown/XAML tests. A fresh independent Sol skeptic review found no actionable issues, passed 118 focused tests, and verified both-engine native integration. Current-head contributor Unit Tests run 41769611784 passed: 1168 tests, zero failures or skips, and the analyzer job passed. The PR Compile-and-Check passed. The fresh full CodeRabbit CLI review of this head against current main completed with 0 issues across all 22 changed files.
Manual evidence: native Windows PowerShell 5.1/WPF validation exercised harmless enqueue, routed reorder/cancel buttons, success, failure recovery, shutdown, and a nested dispatcher pump during close confirmation. Actual themed WPF visuals were exported to XPS and rendered for inspection at the 1150px runtime minimum in Light and Dark; all header controls fit. A 35-item queue retained a 240px viewport, kept its running header fixed, and scrolled to the final item. Independent native integration on PowerShell 7.6.6 and Windows PowerShell 5.1 confirmed Install -> Tweaks -> Upgrade handoffs, live working labels, area switches, final restoration of all 239 application cards and the same frozen icons, with empty queue, no retained handoff and no errors. No live installers or system tweaks were run.
The proposed no-UI queue-dispatch fallback was not applied: supported -Preset/-Config entrypoints call Invoke-WinUtilAutoRun, which waits for each job before starting the next; nested jobs run inline, and GUI closure clears queued work before losing the window. A native worker-pool harness using the actual AutoRun function and five harmless action stand-ins passed on both engines with no window, maximum queue length zero, and no retained handoff. No supported caller reproduced the alleged stranded no-UI queue state.
Published head: bba10da5ba15df997c2cb3326c75757508a50ad3. GitHub confirms it is mergeable; Compile-and-Check passed, and contributor Unit Tests run 41769611784 succeeded with both jobs green (1168 passing tests, no failures or skips). The fresh CodeRabbit CLI review is complete with 0 issues, and all five review threads are resolved. The hosted CodeRabbit check remains skipped because automatic reviews are paused; the completed CLI review supplies the current-head external review. GitHub still carries the earlier changes-requested review, so maintainer approval remains necessary. No approval or merge has been performed.
Start-WinUtilJob -QueueIfBusy parks the job in $sync.JobQueue under the
same lock as the busy test, and Clear-WinUtilActiveJob starts the next
one when a job ends, failed or not. A clock button in the top bar lists
the running and queued jobs and reorders or cancels the queued ones.
Closing the window warns about and discards anything still queued.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Supported installs, tweaks, fixes, and other actions now wait in a queue while another action runs, then start in order. ISO and USB actions still cannot start while another action is running.
Use the top-bar queue button to view running and waiting actions, reorder or cancel queued actions, and see the waiting count.
When closing the app with work running or queued, you’re asked to confirm. Queued actions are discarded when the app closes.
Documentation
Updated the getting-started guide and architecture documentation to explain the job queue.
Selected user actions can queue while another job runs. The job system starts queued actions in order and provides controls to view, reorder, or cancel them. When the window closes, the user can confirm whether to discard queued actions.

Summary
Queue state and execution handoff scripts/start.ps1, functions/private/Start-WinUtilJob.ps1, functions/private/Start-WinUtilNextQueuedJob.ps1, pester/job-layer.Tests.ps1, pester/shutdown.Tests.ps1
The synchronized state stores queued jobs and handoff status. Queue-enabled calls retain job details and parameters, and matching queued requests are deduplicated. After a token-matched release, the system starts the oldest queued job. Tests cover FIFO execution, handoff, failures, duplicate requests, and shutdown behavior.
These callers now request queueing. Tests cover captured selections and confirm that ISO and USB jobs do not request queueing. The documentation describes queue behavior and controls.
Queue controls and interface functions/private/Start-WinUtilNextQueuedJob.ps1, functions/private/Start-WinUtilUserInterface.ps1, xaml/inputXML.xaml, pester/xaml.Tests.ps1
Queue helpers support reordering, cancellation, and clearing. The top bar adds a queue button and popup for running and queued actions. Tests check the interface markup and event wiring.
Queued work during window closure functions/private/Invoke-WinUtilCloseRequest.ps1, functions/private/Start-WinUtilUserInterface.ps1, pester/job-layer.Tests.ps1, pester/shutdown.Tests.ps1
The close prompt can report queued operations and recheck for a job that starts while the prompt is open. The window handler clears queued actions when closure proceeds. Tests cover the prompt and queue clearing.

The new job queue works as described. One small usability gap remains: with a very large queue, the popup may clip rows so that later jobs cannot be reached to reorder or cancel. Adding a scroll container is a quick fix. Otherwise the change looks safe to merge.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in docs/src/content/docs/guides/getting-started.mdx: Added guidance that installs, tweaks, and fixes started during another action wait in a queue; the clock button shows the waiting count and opens controls to inspect running and queued work, reorder or cancel waiting items, and notes that closing WinUtil discards queued items.
observed — Modified behavior in functions/public/Invoke-WPFAppxInstall.ps1: The AppX install job is now started with -QueueIfBusy; the previous call did not pass this option.
observed — Modified behavior in functions/public/Invoke-WPFAppxRemoval.ps1: The AppX removal job now passes -QueueIfBusy to Start-WinUtilJob.
observed — Modified behavior in functions/public/Invoke-WPFButton.ps1: The job start now requests queuing when another job is busy; previously, it started without that option.

Clear-WinUtilActiveJob sets \.JobHandoff while queued work remains,
so a new action queues behind the head instead of taking the slot in
the gap before the dispatch runs. Closing with only queued work left
now prompts, and discarding it closes without a console wait.
A second click on the same action with the same selection while the slot
is busy queued the work again, so it ran several times. Jobs are compared
by name and a serialisation of their parameters inside the queue lock.
Scope the JobQueue assertion to the button handler.
The three matches search the full UI source independently. A regression can remove "JobQueue" = "Show" from $sync["JobQueueButton"].Add_Click while retaining the string elsewhere, and the test can still pass. Match the handler block and assert that it contains the JobQueue action.

The check that nothing started during the prompt and the shutdown flag,
queue clear and handoff reset now happen in one SyncRoot step, so a
handoff either wins and the running-job question is asked again, or is
refused as WinUtil is closing. The XAML test now checks the queue
button's own click handler.
Stop queue dispatch when the user chooses to stop the running job.
If the worker finishes after "No" sets ForceClose but before the deferred window close, its queued dispatch can run first. ForceClose does not block Start-WinUtilNextQueuedJob, so a queued install or tweak can start as the window closes. Set ShuttingDown before posting the close, and recheck the active job if it can change while the prompt is open. This path becomes consequential with the new queue, although Line 88 itself is unchanged. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

In the “No” path of Invoke-WinUtilCloseRequest, set ShuttingDown before posting

Recheck the active job after the prompt returns before applying ForceClose,
since it may have changed while the prompt was open.

…n close
Answering No to the close question set ForceClose but not the shutdown flag,
so the stopped job ending could start a queued one while the window closed.
Both close branches now share Stop-WinUtilQueuedWork, which sets the flag,
clears the queue and ends any handoff under the lock.
