ci(ios): drop the background Simulator boot and the duplicate t3/ios-mvf push run - #58
AidenJohnston wants to merge 6 commits into
Conversation
On the 3-core runner it slowed swift test from 1:22 to 5:25 and the device build from 1:00 to 1:54, costing about 6 minutes to save 2:40. The first run of #57 took 19:21; the audit skip alone should give about 15. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

@AidenJohnston Current-head The failure log does not establish that removing preboot caused these failures. Please inspect the result bundle and compare the same replay cases on the integration base before choosing a fix or retry. The missing gap-screen failure needs disposition independently of the snapshot error. I have not retried the job. The no-preboot source diff had no new finding, but this head does not meet the CI gate yet. |
|
@AidenJohnston New head The duplicate-trigger change is present, and I verified that #10 is open, non-draft and carries full-ui. That addresses the duplicate integration job concern in source, subject to validation after integration. Automatic audit selection for ordinary UI PRs and the draft-conversion handling remain separate #57 follow-ups. |
The contract fetch skipped t3/server whenever a server/ folder existed. t3/ios-mvf has one from the toolchain setup with no schemas in it, so the fetch never ran and vendoredCopiesMatchServer failed every iOS run under HOUSESCAN_REQUIRE_UPSTREAM. Check for a file the tests read instead. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

t3/packet removed packet/manifest.schema.json in 6a12700 when the team adopted the server's capture packet 0.4, so the test compared the vendored copy with a file that no longer exists and failed every iOS run under HOUSESCAN_REQUIRE_UPSTREAM. Deleted with Sam's OK. CI stops fetching t3/packet, which nothing reads now. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

@AidenJohnston The current head 3c1298a now removes the packet upstream drift test as well as changing CI. Please update the PR description: it still says no test code changed and describes the server-schema lookup failure that the later commits fixed. The retained PacketWriterTests validate the emitted synthetic manifest against the pinned 1.1 schema at line 228, assert packetVersion 1.1 at line 246, check the recorded schema hash at line 797, and reject malformed manifests at line 804. That preserves local-format validation, but it does not establish compatibility with the adopted server capture packet 0.4. The S3/S4 producer migration remains a separate handoff. Current CI has passed package tests and build and is still running partial UI tests; the every-state accessibility audit remains excluded. |
|
@AidenJohnston Current-head run 36285603429 failed at 3c1298a. Package tests and app build passed; the UI failure is now FullFlowUITests.swift:177 in testFullFlowFromLidarReplay: Please inspect the retained result bundle with S3 and compare the base button styling before selecting a fix or retry. This differs from the earlier missing-screen/AX-snapshot failures, and the logs alone do not establish that the workflow changes caused it. No retry started here. Run: https://github.com/SamGu-NRX/house-scanning-master/actions/runs/36285603429 Visual evidence added from the same run's artifact 10920334103: the LiDAR replay recording shows the fading reply extending below the instruction card at 31s, overlapping the "Tilt up" detail at 32s, still present beneath the overhead question at 33s, and gone at 35s. I inspected those four extracted frames. They establish transient overlap, not its exact duration or the frame sampled by the failing audit. The saved wall-walk screenshot predates the assertion, and the attachment manifest does not mark either attachment as failure-associated. Please inspect the reply transition lifetime alongside contrast: InstructionCard.swift lines 54 and 59–60 and WallWalkScreen.swift line 265 are diagnosis pointers from the lead's source inspection. This does not establish the contrast failure's cause or attribute the overlap to #58. Attempt 2 update: the retry at unchanged 3c1298a also failed. Its log reports Field issue #64 independently reports instruction/reply overlap on physical-phone build 4.1 at beta 45017ba, with animation timing explicitly unconfirmed. It corroborates the observed symptom, not the contrast-audit cause or #58 attribution. Preserve that existing issue for the product fix. Current integration de04c3b also checks all three server schema/fixture files before deciding to skip fetching; preserve this stronger guard when merging the base into this PR. |
|
Conflicts: the contract fetch step and the packet schema comment take the base's versions (1b41f6d checks all three server files, de04c3b already drops the packet drift test), which supersede e0ba726 and 3c1298a here. What this branch still changes is the pre-boot removal and the push trigger. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Preserve branch coverage when the integration PR conflicts
When PR #10 has a merge conflict with main, subsequent iOS merges into t3/ios-mvf receive neither the deleted push run nor a pull-request run: GitHub states that pull_request workflows do not run while the pull request has a merge conflict. Because this workflow now relies entirely on that long-lived integration PR, its claim to test every merge stops holding until someone resolves the conflict; retain branch-triggered coverage or use another trigger that does not depend on PR mergeability.

@AidenJohnston Validated Codex4115107891 at7f1037e. The workflow retains only main push coverage and relies on #10 pull_request events for t3/ios-mvf. GitHub documents that pull_request workflows do not run during merge conflicts: https://docs.github.com/en/actions/reference/workflows-and-actions/events-that-trigger-workflows#pull_request . #10 is currently MERGEABLE at77d820b, so this is a conditional coverage gap, not evidence that the present run was lost. Please preserve branch coverage during conflicts while keeping the duplicate-run cost bounded, or explicitly agree an owned manual-run procedure for that condition. No automatic heavy retry requested. The three-file contract fetch guard is fixed at this head. |

GitHub’s documentation confirms that **workflows triggered by `pull_request` do not run when the pull request has merge conflicts**. It also says `pull_request_target` workflows can run despite a merge conflict, but that event has security implications and should be used cautiously. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/actions/how-tos/troubleshoot-workflows?utm_source=openai))
Separately, filtering or skip annotations can cause workflows to be skipped and leave associated checks pending—another possible reason a required check appears stuck. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/actions/reference/workflows-and-actions/workflow-syntax?utm_source=openai))

Preserve conflict-time audit coverage for PR #10.
GitHub skips pull_request workflows while a pull request has merge conflicts. The push trigger currently covers only main, so a push to t3/ios-mvf does not provide a fallback. Although workflow_dispatch runs the full audit on any branch, CONTRIBUTING.md does not define an owned procedure for running it before a conflicted merge.
Restore the t3/ios-mvf push trigger, or document an owned manual-dispatch procedure. Qualify the “every merge” statement to match the chosen fallback.

Draft PR leaves branch unchecked If PR #10 is marked draft while work continues on
t3/ios-mvf, updates to that branch trigger PR events, but the iOS job skips drafts. Removing the branch’s push trigger means those commits receive no iOS workflow run; previously, the push run checked them regardless of PR state.

Caretaker check at 7f1037e: confirmed, but only while #10 is a draft (today it isn't). With t3/ios-mvf dropped from the push trigger (ios.yml:7) and drafts skipped (lines 36-39), merges into that branch during a draft period get no iOS run; the base ran them on push. Aiden left this trigger trade-off to Sam in 5855646601, so the decision is Sam's: restore the push trigger, or accept a manual dispatch while #10 is a draft.

Agreed — the caretaker check makes this conditional rather than an always-present gap. While PR #10 is ready for review, its synchronize event runs the iOS job for updates to t3/ios-mvf; while it is a draft, ios-build is skipped, and removing the branch push trigger leaves no automatic run for merges into that branch. I’m withdrawing this as a blocker for the current state. The remaining choice is operational: restore the t3/ios-mvf push trigger to preserve draft-period coverage (at the cost of duplicate runs once #10 is active), or keep the trigger removed and use workflow_dispatch during draft periods.

Per-merge audit promise overstates coverage If another merge updates PR #10 while its previous iOS run is still in progress, the workflow cancels that run. Only the latest merged state gets audited, so the claim that every merge runs the audit once could mislead contributors about what was checked. Qualify the wording to account for cancelled runs.

@AidenJohnston Caretaker check at 7f1037e: confirmed as a wording issue. Pull-request runs for #10 share a concurrency group with cancel-in-progress (ios.yml:28-29), so a merge that lands while the previous run is still going cancels that run, and the earlier merge is never audited. Your 5855646601 already says so; CONTRIBUTING.md:36 should too. Suggested wording: updates trigger #10's checks, a newer update can cancel an unfinished run, and the full-ui label selects the audit.

Follow-up to #57, which was merged before these commits reached it.
1. Drop the background Simulator boot
The first run of #57 took 19:21, down from about 25:00. The background Simulator boot turned out to cost more than it saved: on the 3-core macOS runner it slowed the steps running alongside it.
swift testxcodebuild boots the Simulator at test time again, as it did before #57. The simulator lookup step stays, so a missing iPhone 17 / iOS 26.5 still fails with a clear message.
2. Stop the duplicate run on pushes to
t3/ios-mvf#57 added a push trigger for
t3/ios-mvf. But PR #10 (t3/ios-mvf→main) already tests every merge into that branch, so each merge used two macOS slots for about 20 min each. That's part of the queueing seen around 00:21, when a run waited 21 min to start. The push trigger is nowmainonly. PR #10 has thefull-uilabel, so the accessibility audit still runs once per merge.CONTRIBUTING.mdis updated to match.CI status
