Problem

Related issue: N/A
Validation tasks: none

Remote Control can't be tested end to end on emulators. Each emulator sits behind its own NAT, so a phone emulator never discovers a TV emulator or an Apple TV simulator over mDNS. There was also no way to read what a TV advertises without scraping logcat.

This adds two debug-only adb hooks. #652 and #653, stacked on this one, were tested with them.

Approach

PlaybackDebugReceiver gets two more actions:

  • CAST_STATUS (TV) returns the live Remote Control port, service name and TXT record.
  • CAST_TARGET (phone) adds or replaces a TV from a host, port, name and TXT string resolved on the host. --ez clear true removes them. Injected targets merge with real discovery, survive a discovery restart, and win over an mDNS record with the same device ID.

The browser's TXT parsing moves into SiloCastNsdBrowser.targetFromRecord, so the hook and real discovery read records the same way. The advertiser keeps the record it registered, so CAST_STATUS reports exactly that.

The receiver already requires the sender to hold android.permission.DUMP (adb shell does; apps can't) and does nothing in release builds. Release behavior doesn't change.

Validation

  • testDebugUnitTest: 6,120 tests pass on the top of this stack. lintDebug passes for all three modules, lintVitalRelease for both apps, and the supply-chain checks pass.
  • :androidApp:assembleDebug and :androidTvApp:assembleDebug on this commit alone: pass.
  • On emulators, CAST_STATUS on an Android TV and CAST_TARGET on an Android phone connected the phone to the TV emulator and to an Apple TV simulator. The stacked PRs' end-to-end runs all used these hooks.
  • Review fixes (3b121d9), checked on emulators. A resolved mDNS record can no longer overwrite an injected target. Clearing an injection restores the discovered record it hid: Probe TV, then Injected TV, then Probe TV again. CAST_STATUS reports only a confirmed registration, under the registered name. The fix is merged forward into feat(cast): let the phone share a TV with other controllers and ask before replacing #652 and feat(tv): keep several Remote Control controllers connected to one TV #653, and the full checks pass again on the top of the stack.

Evidence

Evidence: https://evidence.siloserver.org/r/silo-android/pr-651/

Surface and build: debug builds only; nothing a user sees changes. The page has the commands and trimmed output.

Risks

None identified. Both actions are inert in release builds and need the DUMP permission.

Checklist

  • I read and can explain the complete diff.
  • This pull request addresses one concern.
  • The Evidence section shows every change a user can see, or says there is none.

AI Disclosure

  • Harness: Claude Code in T3 Code
  • Tool(s): Claude Code, GitHub CLI, Gradle, Android emulator and adb
  • Model(s): claude-opus-5-5
  • Involvement: Fully AI-generated; human verification of the diff is pending
  • Adversarial review: covered by the independent review of the whole stack described in feat(tv): keep several Remote Control controllers connected to one TV #653. It confirmed the receiver needs DUMP and returns early outside debug builds.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Emulators sit behind NAT that mDNS can't cross, so a phone emulator can't
discover a TV emulator or an Apple TV simulator, and there was no way to see
what a TV advertises. Debug builds get two more PlaybackDebugReceiver
actions:

- CAST_STATUS (TV): the live Remote Control port, name and TXT record.
- CAST_TARGET (phone): adds or replaces a TV target from a host, port,
name and TXT string resolved on the host; `--ez clear true` removes
them. Injected targets merge with real discovery, survive a restart of
it, and win over an mDNS record with the same device id.

The browser's TXT parsing moves into SiloCastNsdBrowser.targetFromRecord
so the hook and discovery read records the same way, and the advertiser
keeps the record it registered so the hook reports exactly that. Behavior
of release builds is unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

The Cast NSD advertiser now exposes its active advertisement. The browser parses and retains injected targets across discovery changes. The debug receiver and both app manifests support Cast status and target broadcast actions.

Changes: Cast Debug Broadcast Support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Advertisement record access
android-shared/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/common/cast/SiloCastNsdAdvertiser.kt
The advertiser builds and caches TXT attributes, exposes the current advertisement, and clears the cached record when stopped.
Debug target parsing and retention
android-shared/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/common/cast/SiloCastNsdBrowser.kt
The browser parses TXT data into targets and preserves injected targets through mDNS resolution, service loss, and discovery stops.
Broadcast actions and app wiring
android-shared/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/common/player/debug/PlaybackDebugReceiver.kt, androidApp/src/androidMain/AndroidManifest.xml, androidTvApp/src/androidMain/AndroidManifest.xml
The receiver reports advertisement status and accepts target updates or clearing commands. Both app manifests register the Cast actions.

Cast debug status can misreport registration, and injected targets can disappear or lose precedence. These testing-hook issues are bounded, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness and follow-up.

…shed registration

Review follow-ups on the debug hooks:

- A resolved mDNS record could pass the "no injected target with this
id" check outside the browser's lock and then overwrite an injected
target set in between. Every write to the target list now holds the
  lock.
- Clearing an injected target dropped the discovered record it had
replaced until discovery found it again. The browser keeps the hidden
  record and restores it.
- CAST_STATUS reported the requested advertisement before NsdManager
confirmed it, and under the requested name. It now reports only a
registered advertisement, under the name NsdManager registered.

The debug target injection changes which rows appear in the Cast target picker (SiloCastNsdBrowser.kt), so this is visible on the Android phone, tablet, and foldable (folded and open). The linked Evidence page is described as containing commands and trimmed output, but this picker change needs before-and-after captures of the same screen with the same data on each of those devices. The TV status hook returns adb JSON and does not change a TV screen.

Automated check: Macroscope check run agent (gpt-6-luna). Evidence was not reviewed for correctness.
