Validation tasks: changes #330 C1–C3 (not yet run)

Apple TVs now keep several Remote Control controllers connected (Silo-Server/silo-apple#856) and say why they close a session. An Android phone controlling one treats every close as "someone took over" and forgets the TV, even when the TV only timed out or was full. It also replaces a title another profile is watching without asking.

This brings the Android phone and the shared wire model level with silo-apple's SiloControl contract. The phone asks before replacing what the TV plays, and it reacts to the TV's close reasons.

Approach

Wire (shared). These fields match silo-apple's names and are all optional:

  • hello: serverIdentity, features, passive and clientKind.
  • A new presence message.
  • close with an optional reason, decoded leniently.
  • handoff_offer: resumeToken, replaceConfirmed and replacingContentId. handoff_ready: resumeToken. handoff_cancel: a nowPlaying summary.

The feature, close-reason and cancel-reason names are constants shared with the TV. A TV that advertises serverIdentity matches a saved server on the same deployment even at another address.

Phone.

  • The hello lists close_reason, resume_token and replace_confirmation. A silent auto-resume connects as passive, so it never puts up the TV's standby screen. The phone sends presence once the user engages: opens the remote, sends a command, or sends a title.
  • Close reasons: a TV without multi_controller is still forgotten on any close. With it, a timeout reconnects quietly, Disconnect on the TV forgets the TV, and other reasons end the session but keep the TV for a later foreground. The remote stays up to show the TV's reason.
  • "Replace what's playing?" appears in two cases. The phone asks before sending a different title to a TV that is playing one. It also asks when the TV answers replace_confirmation_required because another profile's title is on screen. The consent names the title the user saw, so it doesn't cover a title that started meanwhile. Each case asks once.
  • The offer carries the profile name, the verified server identity and the resume token the TV issued. Tokens live in memory per TV, server and profile.
  • A phone signed in before the identity contract has no verified identity for its server. When Remote Control starts, it learns the identity once, as silo-apple does on the server's next activation. Without it, the picker couldn't list a TV that advertises another address of the same deployment, and hello and the offer couldn't name the deployment.
  • Play and pause send an explicit play or pause for what the button shows, never play_pause. A rate_limited reply no longer fails a launch.

Stacked on #651 (debug hooks). The TV-side receiver is #653, stacked on this one. This PR works on its own against an Apple TV running silo-apple#856 and against older TVs.

Validation

  • testDebugUnitTest: 6,120 tests pass at the top of this stack (last run on 12ff751), including 7 new wire goldens and 6 phone-policy tests. lintDebug passes for all three modules, lintVitalRelease for both apps, and the supply-chain checks pass.
  • Android phone emulator with an Apple TV simulator (silo-apple#856):
    • Connect and play.
    • Pause and resume from a second controller show on the phone.
    • Disconnect on the TV releases the phone and leaves an integration connected.
    • Sending a different title asks once on the phone.
    • A title another profile started gets the TV's prompt, and Replace works.
  • Android phone emulator, iPhone simulator and Android TV emulator (feat(tv): keep several Remote Control controllers connected to one TV #653):
    • Both phones stay connected and follow each other's pause and play.
    • Each phone's own prompt and the TV's prompt appear once, and Cancel leaves the TV's title playing.
  • Before captures use main with test(cast): add adb hooks to inspect and inject Remote Control targets #651's hooks. Sending a different title replaces it without asking, and a second phone knocks this one off.
  • Picker: a TV advertising a LAN address of the same server, with its deployment identity, is hidden on main and listed on this branch. The phone in this test had signed in before the identity contract, which is how the missing identity lookup was found.
  • A TV that is full: main and this branch both show the TV's "Too many devices" message. This branch keeps the TV for a later reconnect instead of forgetting it.
  • A 70-second recording on the phone and the TV covers the TV's prompt, Cancel, the prompt again, and Replace.

Evidence

Evidence: https://evidence.siloserver.org/r/silo-android/pr-652/

Surface and build: Android phone emulator (1080×2400, 420 dpi) on this stack, and main plus #651's hooks for the before captures. I had no signed-in tablet or foldable emulator. The tablet (2560×1600, 320 dpi) and Pixel Fold sizes (open 2208×1840 and closed 1080×2092, both 420 dpi) are the same signed-in emulator resized with wm size and wm density. These captures show the dialogs' layout at those sizes but don't exercise fold postures. The Android TV app doesn't change in this PR.

Risks

  • fix(tv): hand control back to the TV when Back leaves a phone-controlled title #567 (hand control back to the TV on Back) also edits SiloCastController and SiloCastRemoteScreen. Whichever lands second needs a rebase. Its "close the remote with a toast" behavior should apply only to the reasons this PR treats as final.
  • Older TVs see only optional fields they already ignore. Older phones talking to new TVs keep today's behavior.

Follow-ups: none in this PR. See #653 for receiver follow-ups.

  • Adversarial review: an independent Claude Code agent (claude-opus-5-5) reviewed the whole three-PR stack against main and silo-apple's sources, without running it. On the phone and wire side it found no defects. It confirmed that the passive flag is set before the hello, that presence is resent after the TV's hello, that the close policy and reconnects agree, and that both consent flows send replacingContentId. Its receiver findings are listed in feat(tv): keep several Remote Control controllers connected to one TV #653.

Note

Add multi-controller cast support with replacement confirmation and passive presence

  • Extends the cast protocol so phones and TVs advertise features, deployment identity, close reasons, resume tokens, and presence in hellos, handoffs, and close frames (SiloCastMessage.kt, SiloCastProtocol.kt).
  • The phone controller now asks for confirmation before replacing a title already playing on the TV, with a new dialog in SiloCastRemoteScreen.kt, and can resume a paused launch via confirmReplace/cancelReplace.
  • A phone can join a TV passively (auto-resume in the foreground) and switch to active presence without reconnecting; a TV close can request reconnect, forget, or keep the target via the new SiloCastClosePolicy.
  • ensureConnected matches targets by registry ID or verified deployment identity, so another address of the same server is treated as the active server.
  • playPause now sends an explicit setPlaying call, and the mini-bar matches this change.
  • Risk: wire-format additions in SiloCastHello, SiloCastHandoffOffer, and SiloCastClose change serialized payloads; older TVs must still decode them, which the tolerant close decoding and absent-feature handling in SiloCastMessageTest.kt cover.

Emulators sit behind NAT that mDNS can't cross, so a phone emulator can't
discover a TV emulator or an Apple TV simulator, and there was no way to see
what a TV advertises. Debug builds get two more PlaybackDebugReceiver
actions:

- CAST_STATUS (TV): the live Remote Control port, name and TXT record.
- CAST_TARGET (phone): adds or replaces a TV target from a host, port,
name and TXT string resolved on the host; `--ez clear true` removes
them. Injected targets merge with real discovery, survive a restart of
it, and win over an mDNS record with the same device id.

The browser's TXT parsing moves into SiloCastNsdBrowser.targetFromRecord
so the hook and discovery read records the same way, and the advertiser
keeps the record it registered so the hook reports exactly that. Behavior
of release builds is unchanged.

Apple TVs now keep several Remote Control controllers connected and say
why they close a session; Android phones treated every close as "someone
took over", forgot the TV, and replaced other profiles' titles without
asking. This brings the phone and the shared wire format level with
silo-apple's SiloControl contract. Every addition is optional and
feature-gated, so older peers see today's behavior.

Wire (shared):
- hello: serverIdentity, features, passive, clientKind; `presence`
message; optional `close` reason, decoded leniently as Apple does.
- handoff_offer: serverIdentity, resumeToken, replaceConfirmed,
  replacingContentId. handoff_ready: resumeToken. handoff_cancel:
  nowPlaying.
- Feature, close-reason, cancel-reason and client-kind names, matching
  Apple's strings.
- TVs advertising serverIdentity match an active server on the same
  deployment at another address.

Phone:
- Lists close_reason, resume_token and replace_confirmation; a silent
auto-resume connects passive and sends presence once the user engages
(remote opened, a command, or a title sent).
- Close policy: an older TV's close still forgets it. A multi-controller
TV's timeout reconnects; tv_disconnected forgets the TV; other reasons
end the session but keep the target, and the remote keeps the TV's
  error.
- Sends its profile name, its verified server identity, and the resume
token the TV issued it; the token lives in memory per TV, server and
  profile.
- "Replace what's playing?" on the remote, for a TV's
replace_confirmation_required and before sending a different title to a
TV that is playing one. The consent names the title the user saw.
- Play and pause buttons send explicit play/pause for what they show,
never play_pause. A rate_limited reply no longer fails a launch.

📝 Walkthrough

Silo Cast adds feature negotiation, server-identity matching, passive sessions, and resume-token handling. Phone-side handoffs now support typed refusals and replacement confirmation. The remote screen provides confirmation controls, and protocol tests cover the added message fields and behaviors.

Changes: Silo Cast sessions and handoff

Layer / File(s) Summary
Protocol negotiation and messages
shared/src/commonMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/cast/SiloCastProtocol.kt, shared/src/commonMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/cast/SiloCastMessage.kt, shared/src/commonTest/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/cast/SiloCastMessageTest.kt
The protocol adds feature and reason constants. Messages add presence and optional close, hello, and handoff fields. Tests cover encoding, decoding, and feature names.
Server identity and target matching
android-shared/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/common/cast/SiloCastNsdBrowser.kt, shared/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/network/AndroidServerRegistry.kt, androidApp/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/android/ui/screens/cast/SiloCastTargetPickerSheet.kt, androidApp/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/android/di/AndroidModule.kt, androidApp/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/android/cast/SiloCastController.kt
Targets carry advertised server identities. Server matching and target filtering use server IDs or verified identities. The controller receives server-identity and active-profile providers.
Passive sessions and close handling
androidApp/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/android/cast/SiloCastController.kt, androidApp/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/android/cast/SiloCastPhonePolicy.kt, androidTvApp/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/tv/cast/TvSiloCastReceiver.kt
The controller tracks passive sessions and negotiated features, sends presence after engagement, and applies close policies based on supported features and close reasons. The TV receiver ignores presence messages.
Handoff and replacement confirmation
androidApp/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/android/cast/SiloCastController.kt, androidApp/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/android/cast/SiloCastPhonePolicy.kt, androidApp/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/android/ui/screens/cast/SiloCastRemoteScreen.kt, androidApp/src/androidMain/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/android/ui/screens/cast/SiloCastMiniBar.kt, androidApp/src/androidMain/res/values/strings.xml, androidApp/src/androidUnitTest/kotlin/org/siloserver/silo/android/cast/SiloCastPhonePolicyTest.kt
Handoffs carry server, profile, resume-token, and replacement data. The controller handles replacement consent and typed refusals. The remote screen displays a confirmation dialog, and policy tests cover close behavior, replacement prompts, and resume-token scoping.

Visible change; evidence is incomplete.

  • The replacement-confirmation flow in SiloCastRemoteScreen.kt and SiloCastController.kt reaches the Android phone, tablet, and foldable folded/open; the Evidence text describes dialog captures but no recording of this multi-step flow, so the linked evidence should include a recording of the prompt and confirm/cancel paths.
  • SiloCastTargetPickerSheet.kt and AndroidServerRegistry.kt change which TVs are listed and their server subtitle when the discovered target matches the active server by deployment identity; the evidence description does not cover the picker. Add before/after captures of the same picker and target data on the phone app devices.
  • SiloCastController.kt changes the phone's close/reconnect behavior and error feedback; no evidence of these remote states is described. Include a recording or captures showing the changed states on the phone app devices.
  • SiloCastController.kt also changes launch and play/pause commands sent to the receiver, affecting Android TV playback through TvSiloCastReceiver and TvSiloCastPlayerAdapter; no Android TV evidence is described, so include a TV capture or recording of the changed playback behavior. The statement that the TV app itself is unchanged does not cover this controller-to-TV effect.

The PR explains that foldable layouts were captured by resizing an emulator and that fold postures were not exercised; that limitation is noted for reviewer consideration.

…shed registration

Review follow-ups on the debug hooks:

- A resolved mDNS record could pass the "no injected target with this
id" check outside the browser's lock and then overwrite an injected
target set in between. Every write to the target list now holds the
  lock.
- Clearing an injected target dropped the discovered record it had
replaced until discovery found it again. The browser keeps the hidden
  record and restores it.
- CAST_STATUS reported the requested advertisement before NsdManager
confirmed it, and under the requested name. It now reports only a
registered advertisement, under the name NsdManager registered.

A server signed in before the identity contract has no verified
identity on the phone. The picker then can't list a TV that advertises
another address of the same deployment, and hello and the handoff offer
can't name the deployment. silo-apple learns it on the server's next
activation; the phone now learns it once when it starts looking for TVs
(the picker or a foreground auto-resume), through ServerIdentityRepository.

Evidence updated (same link). Item by item:

  • Replace flow: added a 70-second recording on the phone and the Android TV. It shows the TV's prompt, Cancel, the prompt again, Replace, and the TV resuming the title under the new profile. Dialog captures at tablet and foldable sizes were already on the page.
  • Picker: added before and after captures with a TV that advertises a LAN address of the same server. main hides it and this PR lists it, at phone, tablet and foldable sizes. Capturing this found a gap: a phone signed in before the identity contract never learned its server's identity, so the match couldn't happen. f435ae7 now learns it when Remote Control starts, as silo-apple does.
  • Close and reconnect: added the full-TV case (too_many_controllers). The message on screen is the TV's own and is the same on main. The change is that the phone keeps the TV instead of forgetting it, which isn't visible. Disconnect on the TV (tv_disconnected) was already captured.
  • Play and pause: the buttons now send play or pause for what they show instead of play_pause. On screen that looks the same as before. The cross-device pause and resume captures show the result on the TV and on the other phone.
  • Fold postures: not exercised. As the PR says, the tablet and foldable sizes come from a resized phone emulator.

Review follow-ups:

- presence is written only to the connection the user engaged with. A
reconnect before the write no longer marks the replacement session
  active.
- A TV matched to the active server by deployment identity is saved under
the active server's key, so a foreground auto-resume still recognises it
  after a restart.
- A failed identity lookup is tried again on the next browse instead of
  waiting for an app restart.

@coderabbitai Two items from your review:

  1. Save the active server ID for TVs matched by deployment identity: fixed in e58e870.
  2. Require authorization and a verified identity match before preparing a handoff: not changing. A handoff offer is how a phone signed in to a different server, or with no authorization on this TV, borrows a profile, so requiring a match would remove the feature. The offer's serverIdentity only helps the TV reach the server; it grants nothing. The borrowed profile exists only after the phone's own signed-in account approves the TV's device-login challenge on that server (remote_playback purpose, temporary session), and the TV checks that the approval matches the offer's server and profile before activating it. The multi-controller receiver in feat(tv): keep several Remote Control controllers connected to one TV #653 also allows reuse of a borrowed profile only to the connection that completed the handoff, or a holder of the resume token it was issued.

  1. You report that e58e870 fixes saving the active server ID. I have not independently verified that commit.
  2. I withdraw the recommendation to require authorization and a verified identity match before preparing a handoff. That requirement would prevent the intended cross-server profile borrowing. The offer’s serverIdentity provides connection information; it does not grant access.

The security boundary you describe is device-login approval and validation before profile activation. The connection or resume-token restriction in #653 controls reuse of the borrowed profile. No pre-offer authorization gate is needed under that contract.

Learning: In Silo Cast, preparing a handoff offer intentionally supports phones signed in to a different server or without authorization on the TV. Do not require existing TV authorization or a verified deployment-identity match before preparing the offer. The offer's serverIdentity helps the TV reach the server and does not grant access. A borrowed profile requires approval by the phone's signed-in account of the TV's device-login challenge with remote_playback purpose and a temporary session. Before activating the profile, the TV checks that the approval matches the offer's server and profile. The multi-controller receiver in Silo-Server/silo-android PR #653 restricts borrowed-profile reuse to the connection that completed the handoff or a holder of its issued resume token.
