Keep payload validation failures retryable
When a plugin returns InvalidArgument, or a legacy endpoint returns any 400/422, this classifies the failure as an item-level refusal even though those statuses can also describe invalid marker bounds, duration, segment, or another payload field. Record consequently keeps the target claim active, so correcting the marker for the same item is skipped for 30 days; only errors known to mean the provider lacks the item should become SubmissionInvalidError.

Keeping this as is, deliberately. Releasing the claim on a 400 is the behavior this PR replaces: the refused payload is resent every night and spends the provider's daily submit limit, which is why sharing stalled. The 400s seen in practice are item-level ("Season N does not exist for this show on TMDB"), and our payloads stay inside TheIntroDB's documented bounds (intro 5–200 s, duration 5 min–6 h). A payload refusal still gets one more attempt with the then-current marker at the 30-day recheck. Distinguishing payload from item refusals needs a structured signal from the plugin, noted as a follow-up in the PR.

Backfill claims with each provider's key ID
When a historical contribution belongs to a plugin keyed by TVDB and the item has both TMDB and TVDB IDs, this backfill records a TMDB target even though contributionTargetKey now records a TVDB target. A corrected marker can therefore bypass the historical claim and be resubmitted to the same provider item, while a later TVDB rematch can be hidden from the automatic task because episodeTargetKeySQL also still compares the unchanged TMDB target. Fresh evidence after the earlier fix is that both SQL derivations remain TMDB-first instead of honoring SubmissionRequirements.RequiredExternalIDs; derive the provider-specific key or restrict backfilling to providers known to use that order.

Not changing this now. The only submitting provider, TheIntroDB, requires tmdb in its manifest, so the provider-aware key and both SQL derivations produce identical keys for every existing row and candidate; the comment on contributionTargetKey records that assumption. A provider keyed by another ID would need the migration and the candidate query to derive its key per provider. For the candidate query that only costs pruning (Claim still decides). For historical rows none exist, since this migration runs before any such provider could submit.

Keep season-zero specials eligible for contribution
For a submission-capable plugin that accepts standard season-zero specials, this guard—and the matching e.season_number > 0 candidate predicate—silently prevents both manual and automatic contributions before the provider is called. The existing marker population path deliberately rejects only negative seasons (population.go:181), preserving season 0 as a valid special, so core code should not impose this provider-specific restriction; distinguish missing numbering from season zero or let each plugin validate it.

Keeping the guard. TheIntroDB's submit API requires season and episode of at least 1, so every season-0 submission is a guaranteed refusal that spends the daily submit limit, which is the waste this PR removes. population.go accepts season 0 because fetching tolerates it. If a provider that accepts specials appears, the right shape is a flag in SubmissionRequirements; until then a core check is the simpler option.

Preserve claim fencing during rolling upgrades
During a rolling cluster upgrade, old replicas continue inserting active claims without target_key while this nontransactional migration runs. Once this line drops the payload index, those NULL-key rows neither conflict with the new target index (Postgres permits multiple NULLs) nor match the new Claim lookup, and the old and new replicas use different advisory-lock keys. They can therefore submit the same provider item concurrently, permanently consuming quota or creating an unamendable duplicate; use a mixed-version bridge such as deriving target keys for legacy writes or retaining a shared fence until every replica is upgraded.

Leaving this as is. The window is a rolling deploy that overlaps a contribution run: the daily task or an admin-triggered contribution. In that window an old and a new replica could claim the same item under different locks. The consequence is bounded by the provider, though: TheIntroDB accepts one submission per account per item and refuses a second with 409, so the worst case is one wasted request, not a duplicate or an amended value. Silo is pre-1.0 and deploys switch over in one step, so a mixed-version fence for a single deploy window isn't worth carrying.
Review follow-up. After a short rate limit the task runs every provider for the file again, so providers that had already finished reported skips on each retry and inflated the run's totals. Each provider's outcome for a segment is now counted once per file. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Preserve claims when secondary IDs are enriched
When a historical contribution still points to the same provider item but a secondary ID was added or changed before this migration (for example, TheIntroDB still uses the same TMDB ID while TVDB was later populated), the recomputed hash differs because it includes all three IDs, so this equality leaves target_key NULL. The payload index is then dropped, and both the candidate query and Claim ignore the old row, allowing a duplicate submission to the unchanged provider target. Fresh evidence beyond the earlier rematch discussion is that lines 35–36 hash IDs that do not participate in the TMDB target selected on lines 22–25; the backfill should distinguish changes to the provider-keying ID from secondary-ID enrichment.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
This is accurate, and I'm keeping the migration as it is. The hash covers every ID, so a row can't be matched to its old target once a secondary ID changes, because the migration has no record of the old value. Such a row ends up with a NULL key. The next run sends that item once, TheIntroDB refuses it with 409, and the new conflict row holds the target from then on. That is at most one request per affected item, once. The other option, keying from current metadata without the hash check, would let a claim on a pre-rematch item block the rematched item until someone clears it by hand. Accepting a hash match with blanked secondary IDs would cover the "ID added later" case but not a changed ID, and it would make the migration more complex to save a one-time request.

An error releases the provider's claim, so the retry after a short rate limit submits it again. The task kept the first failure and dropped the retry's outcome, reporting a submission as failed. The retry's outcome now replaces a counted failure; other outcomes are still counted once. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Add an index for confidence-keyset pagination
When an installation has more than 500 eligible episode files, every page reruns this confidence-ordered query with a lower cursor. A repository-wide migration search shows no index beginning with COALESCE(intro_markers_confidence, 0), id; the existing episode index cannot provide this order, so PostgreSQL must scan and sort the remaining eligible set for each 500-row page. This turns one nightly run into roughly N/500 candidate-table scans and can dominate database load on large libraries; add a matching partial/expression index or retain pagination in an indexed order.

I measured this on a migrated database with 100,000 eligible episode files, 99% of them already claimed. That is the steady state, where the claimed files sit at the top of the confidence order. A 500-row page took about 0.4 s. The sequential scan and sort took 11–25 ms of that, and the planner already stops early through the Limit above a nested loop. The remaining time is the claim subquery on every row the page walks past, and an ordering index would walk the same claimed rows. Each run pages until the daily limit stops it or the candidates run out, so it reads a few pages. Before this PR the task opened a claim transaction for every eligible file and provider on every run. I'm not adding an index without a measured problem.

Apply each provider's confidence threshold during pruning
When two auto-enabled providers use different thresholds, such as 0.80 and 0.95, this passes 0.80 as the global cutoff while requiring claims from both providers before pruning a candidate. After the low-threshold provider claims a 0.85 item, the high-threshold provider silently declines it in contributeSegment and can never create the missing claim, so every nightly run reloads and resolves that file and rechecks the existing claim. Across the confidence band between thresholds, this defeats the new pruning on large libraries; associate each provider with its threshold and require a claim only when that file qualifies for that provider.

The trace is right, but the effect is local work, not quota. In that setup, the 0.95 provider skips a 0.85 file in contributeSegment before any request, and the 0.80 provider's Claim returns "already submitted". Each run re-checks those files in the local database without contacting either provider. Before this PR the task re-checked every eligible file on every run, so this is less pruning than possible, not a regression. The same gap exists for a file a provider skips for missing IDs. The query prunes only when every provider holds a claim, and Claim still decides. The plugin catalog has one marker provider today (TheIntroDB), so no deployment can have two thresholds yet. When a second provider arrives, the right shape is per-provider thresholds in the query: a file stays a candidate while some provider it qualifies for lacks a blocking claim. I'm leaving this open as a follow-up.

Related issue: N/A
Validation tasks: changes #1148 C2 (not yet run). Submission outcomes and the nightly task's behavior change; the provider interface does not.
Automatic intro sharing to TheIntroDB had stopped making progress. TheIntroDB accepts one submission per account for each episode (or movie) and segment, offers no way to amend one, and caps submissions per account per day. The nightly Share intro markers task spent that budget on requests that could not succeed:
In the ledger we looked at, the task submitted nothing for two weeks while reporting success.
Approach
Claim the provider item, not the payload. A new
target_keycolumn names the item: kind, the external ID the provider keys submissions by (its required IDs, else TMDB, then TVDB, then IMDb), season, and episode. A partial unique index allows one active claim per provider, segment, and target, whatever times it carried. The payload hash stays for audit.Treat refusals of the item as final for a while. HTTP 400, 404, and 422 from the legacy plugin text, and gRPC
InvalidArgumentfrom newer plugins, map to a newinvalidstatus.FailedPreconditiondescribes provider state and stays retryable. An invalid row holds the claim for 30 days, then gets one more attempt, because these refusals usually reflect the provider's catalog (for example a season TMDB has not listed yet). Episodes without season and episode numbers are skipped before any request.Change the task loop:
retry_after_secondsas before.invalidcount. The v2 admin task API's marker result declares it (an additive field), and the admin marker task card shows it as "N refused by the provider".The migration backfills
target_keyfrom current metadata only where the row's stored payload hash recomputes from that metadata, so rows submitted before a rematch claim nothing. It also settles stored 4xx refusals asinvalidand keeps one active claim per target: accepted over pending over rejected over conflict over invalid, then newest. It builds the new index concurrently and drops the old payload index, which the target index subsumes.I considered deduplicating by local episode instead of adding a column. That would block a correct resubmission after a show is rematched to a different provider ID, so the target key follows the resolved IDs.

Kept with reasons in their threads: payload-level 400s, per-provider backfill keys, season 0, rolling-upgrade claim fencing, backfill after secondary-ID changes, and an index for candidate paging (measured at about 0.4 s per page for 100,000 eligible files).🤖 Generated with Claude Code
