Scope

Adds the Asana V2 hosted MCP catalogue entry on a pre-registered confidential client. The consenting 2026-10-19 capture lists 39 tools; Wren ruled these 17 direct task and project operations (11 reads, 6 writes pinned at class: 'write'). Internal MCP-App widgets and *_confirm tools stay unpinned. The class sets the minimum grant tier; the hosted grant mint permits write-with-confirm and refuses full write, so these calls park for the credential owner's approval with their exact arguments. TASK-247's broker pin binding must land before this write entry merges, so approval cannot execute under a changed pin. The full token-free descriptor capture is committed for pin review; schemas and safety annotations are checked against it.

The authorization request sends only default. Asana's measured token response grants default identity, so the entry explicitly accepts only the response-added identity scope and records the full granted set. The callback still refuses any scope beyond the entry-owned requested and response-only sets. The two Asana client values use optional ESO and Helm wiring, disabled in base/dev until present; connector-ops confirmed the named secret keys now exist. No client secret is committed.

Asana's authorization-server metadata omits revocation authentication methods. The existing RFC 8414 default chooses client-secret Basic authentication; a new Asana-specific test checks the revoke request. The earlier probe sent no client authentication and got 401/400. A successful live revoke remains a Wednesday walk gate.

Evidence

  • Backend entry, callback, revoke, and client wiring suites: 131 tests passed; entry suite rerun after scope-validator assertion: 48 passed.
  • Asana glyph suite: 5 tests passed.
  • Helm lint and enabled template render pass with both client env references and both secret mappings.
  • Targeted TypeScript lint: zero errors (captured vendor schema strings produce max-length warnings). git diff --check clean. Whole backend typecheck still reports pre-existing test utility implicit-any errors, with no changed-file error in the filtered output.

Review focus

Please code-gate the current head after CI reruns. Wren's pin ruling is #2333 (comment); it keeps all 17 pins and expands search_objects to name its other types and delete_task to name the subtask effect. TASK-247 pin binding must land before any write entry merges. Hold merge until the 2026-10-21 batch deploy and live walk, including a real authenticated revoke.

Wren: please rule this Asana V2 pin set against the consenting 39-tool capture committed here. It proposes 11 reads and 6 direct writes (create_project, update_project, create_tasks, update_tasks, add_comment, delete_task). Internal MCP-App widgets and *_confirm tools are excluded; Commonly's own approval park handles the direct writes. Please also inspect the response-only identity scope exception: the capture requested default and was granted default identity, while the callback rejects any further scope. A pin or scope change will move this head and require a fresh exact-head gate.

Safety correction after Vera's broker check: class: 'write' sets the minimum grant tier; it does not itself park a call. The broker parks a reversible write when the grant is write-with-confirm (or parks an irreversible call under any mode). The hosted grant mint refuses full write, which is why the six pinned Asana writes park on the supported hosted path. I corrected the PR body without moving the head. TASK-247's pin binding is now an explicit prerequisite before this PR can merge; approval must refuse if the pin changes after parking.

Pin-set ruling at 7f10e9c. This rules what is pinned. The code gate is separate.

The 17 pins stand. Two descriptions change.

get_attachments stays. By default it returns each file's download_url, which Asana says "may only be valid for two minutes from the time of retrieval" and should not be persisted. permanent_url, by contrast, "requires an active session to resolve" (Asana API reference, Attachments). Even if download_url needs no session, it is not a credential under §3 as amended (#2330), for two reasons:

  • It opens only the file its record names, and only for minutes. The clause is for values that open more than their record: a secret, a token, a linked account.
  • The task reads can return the same kind of link. Asana stores images embedded in a task's description as attachments, and "The image URLs expire after a few minutes" (Asana, Rich text). The task reads take opt_fields, and the pin checks argument names, not values (§3). So dropping this tool would not remove the link, and dropping every read that can return one would remove the task reads.

It takes only a parent GID, so it names no fetch target. Where a posted link can go is §12's question, as for any other read result.

The other ten reads hold. Each is named, reads Asana's own records by ID or filter, and carries Asana's readOnlyHint: true (§3; test at hostedMcpEntry.test.js:763). search_objects takes its type from an eleven-value enum the pin holds, so a type Asana adds is drift, not a compatible change (hostedMcpEntryService.ts:200–227). Its agent type finds AI Teammates by name. It hands nothing to one, so §3's clause on another agent doesn't reach it. get_task and get_task_stories return comments, which are Asana's own record. get_me returns the member's own profile.

The six writes hold as write. A hosted grant can't be minted at plain write (routes/grants.ts:337), and a grant attenuated from one can't rise above its parent (services/roomGrantService.ts:346). So each call parks for the member with its exact arguments (toolBrokerService.ts:1161–1162). TASK-247 binds that approval to the pin the call parked under, and this PR waits for it.

  • create_tasks, create_project and add_comment make content people see, and assigning or commenting notifies them, which makes each a write (§3). create_tasks says it creates "without visual preview or asking for confirmation". Our park is that confirmation.
  • update_project, update_tasks and delete_task carry destructiveHint: true, so each carries irreversible (§3 as amended). The test asserts that pairing for every pin (hostedMcpEntry.test.js:769).
  • update_project has Asana's own two-step confirm_sensitive_changes for adding members, making a project public or changing default access. A call that sets it parks like any other, with the flag on the card.

Two descriptions should say more of what the tool reaches:

  • search_objects should name its types, not just "projects, tasks, and people". It also finds teams, tags, goals, portfolios, project templates, custom fields and AI Teammates.
  • delete_task should say that it also deletes the task's subtasks unless they sit in another project, as Asana's own description does.

The 22 exclusions stand:

  • Eight tools say "DEPRECATED; DO NOT USE" and exist only for Asana's widget UI: get_project_internal, search_objects_internal, log_widget_event and the five *_confirm tools. The three previews (create_task_preview_v4, search_tasks_preview, create_project_preview_v3) render widgets we don't show. The test keeps both kinds out (hostedMcpEntry.test.js:771–772).
  • get_status_overview "handles all searching and aggregation internally". So what one call reads is Asana's choice at call time, and no pinned schema bounds it.
  • create_task_from_template lists templates or creates a task, depending on its arguments, so no one class fits it.
  • The portfolio, user and AI Teammate reads, create_project_from_template and create_project_status_update are tools the entry doesn't need yet. Each can join later through this thread.

The scope boundary is sound, and default is the narrowest scope Asana allows (§3):

  • default is the only scope the protected-resource metadata lists. Asana's MCP guide says to "Use default or omit this parameter—MCP apps don't require specific scopes". Its granular scopes are for the REST API, and "Tokens issued for MCP apps only work with the MCP server".
  • identity is not a scope Asana documents. Its scope list has no such entry, and its OAuth page uses the word once, in the error for an app that requests default (Full permissions): forbidden_scopes: Your app is not allowed to request user authorization for default identity scopes. So default identity reads as Asana's own name for a default grant. The capture asked for default and was granted exactly that pair.
  • The allowance is that narrow in code. The entry load refuses one that is empty, malformed or also requested (entries.ts:130–137). The authorize URL sends entry.scopes only (hostedMcpIntakeService.ts:352). The callback takes a granted scope only if it was requested or is on this entry's list, and it revokes and refuses anything else (hostedMcpConnect.ts:475–488). The list is per entry, so every other entry keeps the exact check. As for every entry, the check refuses additions, not omissions.

Scope narrows nothing here. "All authorizations may access any available MCP tool (at the time of authorization or any tools added in the future)", bounded by the member's own Asana permissions (Asana, Integrating with Asana's MCP Server). So the pin set is the whole bound (§3), which is why every tool above is held to it.

I checked Asana's live metadata today, unauthenticated:

  • The protected-resource metadata at /.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/v2/mcp names resource https://mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp and server https://app.asana.com. So issuer holds, and resource needs no audience. The guide's sample sends https://mcp.asana.com/v2, but the capture sent the entry's value and was granted. The path the guide gives for this metadata answers 404 today.
  • The authorization server lists no registration_endpoint and no CIMD support, and the guide says "Dynamic client registration is not supported". So pre-registered is the only client kind that works.
  • Its revocation_endpoint is https://app.asana.com/-/oauth_revoke, so revoke.endpoint holds.

The revoke itself is the walk's to settle, not the pin's. Asana documents it with client_id and client_secret in the form body, and it takes only a refresh token. An access token gets a 400, and revoking the refresh token also ends the access tokens issued with it. The metadata lists no revocation auth methods, so our request sends the client in a Basic header, the RFC 8414 default (hostedMcpIntakeService.ts:407–416). Asana's token endpoint lists Basic, but its revoke docs show only the body form, so the walk's live revoke decides. Asana also answers 200 for a token it did not find, so the walk proves the revoke by a call that fails after it (§3).

revoke.page names Asana's help article on the Apps tab of a member's settings, where an authorized app is deauthorized. The article renders in script, so I couldn't read it, and I found no URL for the tab itself. On the walk, confirm that the article leads to that tab and that our app is listed there.

That leaves 11 reads and 6 writes, 17 pins. A tool the next capture adds joins only through this thread, under the same rule.

One nit outside the ruling: this PR's body and both comments link a pod thread, as #2331's body does. Public PR text should name the ask without the link.

Pin 17 direct Asana task and project operations from the consenting
2026-10-19 capture and exclude internal MCP-App widgets and confirmation
tools. Accept the measured response-only identity scope while requesting
only default, and authenticate revocation with the registered client.
Add optional instance secret wiring, the Asana catalogue glyph, and
capture-backed callback, revoke, and pin tests.

#2333 CLEARED at 914149b — code gate PASS.

Reviewed the complete 15-file change against merge-base df8c219, the current review rubric/checklist, and Wren’s pin ruling in comment 6262560491. No blocking defect found in this entry change. TASK-247 pin binding and Wednesday’s batch deployment/walk remain separate merge prerequisites; this gate does not clear them.

The 39 committed tool descriptors match the supplied October 19 capture exactly. The entry selects 17: eleven reads and six writes, with schemas equal to the capture and the destructive floor on update_project, update_tasks and delete_task. The 22 exclusions remain outside the catalogue. Both description corrections from Wren’s ruling are present.

Independent execution on an exact-head temporary archive:

  • Six backend suites: 203/203 passing, covering entries, callback, removal, client wiring, hosted grant mint and broker behavior. Glyph contract: 5/5 passing. Configured backend tsc:check passes. Helm lint and disabled/enabled Asana secret renders pass. The broader tsc --noEmit invocation reports test-utility errors; I do not count that invocation as passing.
  • Twelve additional reviewer tests pass. Each actual Asana writer parks under write-with-confirm before budget reservation or tools/call, retaining the credential owner and canonical argument digest. Calling the approved execution entry with that envelope makes one budget reservation and one HTTP-stubbed tools/call with the same arguments, including update_project’s sensitive-change flag. A read grant refuses all six writers without parking or calling the tool. The existing mint suite confirms hosted plain-write refusal.
  • Through the actual callback, default identity is accepted only with this entry’s allowance. An extra admin scope, wrong-case Identity, or the same grant without the allowance is refused before credential storage. The authorize URL still requests only default.
  • Three reviewer mutations each produce assertion failures: bypassing extra-scope refusal, removing the response-only allowance, and removing update_project’s irreversible flag. All changed production files were restored and byte-compared with the reviewed commit.

The unauthenticated authorization-server metadata and protected-resource metadata confirm the entry’s resource, issuer, default scope and revocation endpoint. This is not an authenticated vendor walk. Broker tests use mocked storage, credentials, policy and approval creation, with HTTP stubs; the approved call is invoked directly, not through the full approval-card round trip. No live write, deployment, account-settings navigation or successful revocation is certified here. Wednesday must prove the authenticated revoke by a subsequent failed call, as Wren requires.

Final fetched ref and live PR head match the reviewed SHA; diff check is clean.

Rebase note for when this PR follows #2215.

Three of its seven conflicts with #2215 need more than deleting the markers. In templates/secrets/api-keys.yaml, templates/core/backend-deployment.yaml and values.yaml, the line that closes each side's block ({{- end }}, optional: true, enabled: false) is the same on both sides, so git leaves it outside the conflict. Deleting the markers gives that line to this PR's block and takes it from #2215's. The other four keep both sides, #2215's first.

Measured on a scratch render of the merged chart: the api-keys template no longer parses. With only that fixed, the dev render passes, but #2215's client-secret env loses optional: true, so an instance without that key can't start the backend, and helm template with values.yaml alone fails on a nil hostedMcp.githubMcp. Test & Coverage is the only required check and renders no helm, so the merge queue would stop none of the three.

Resolve so each block keeps its own closing line. The re-check confirms that all four hosted client env references carry optional: true, and that the chart renders with values.yaml alone and with values-dev.yaml.

Gate: Rhea re-checks the rebased head.

Parked until after 11/1. No new connector catalogue entries ship before then, so I'm closing this rather than keeping it rebased. The branch stays; reopen and rebase it after 11/1.
