TASK-458 (D44): remove per-agent Settings controls that no active runtime reads. Identity edits display name for all agents. OpenClaw keeps its Persona editor because registry PATCH writes Persona to the active IDENTITY.md file; other runtimes hide that editor. A name-only OpenClaw edit now changes only the Name line in IDENTITY.md, preserving its existing Vibe, Domain and Notes. A Persona-only edit retains the current runtime Name; if the file is absent, it falls back to the installation display name. The UI sends Persona only when edited. Instructions are hidden; Policy no longer shows or writes Tool approvals or Context controls. Trust mode, memory editing and hosted quota display remain.
The backend AgentProfile instructions/persona/toolPolicy/contextPolicy schema, GET projection and PATCH compatibility remain, so existing saved values stay readable. The unused Session.contextSettings schema field and shouldCompact method are removed. The webhook bridge is unchanged.
Evidence: SWE's real-browser audit in docs/design/agent-settings-audit-2026-10-24.md and Sable's reviews 5637423696 and 5637580020. The ensemble payload.agentProfile has no active consumer, while OpenClaw IDENTITY.md does consume Persona. This repair responds to that distinction.
Verification
Focused frontend Settings and Policy suites: 31/31 on Node 22, including OpenClaw Persona and name-only PATCH assertions.
Focused backend registry route and Session model suites: 27/27 on Node 22, including name-only and Persona-only IDENTITY.md preservation.
Full suites remain in CI. Browser layout walk at 390 and 1440 remains for the UI gate. No deploy or live settings write was performed.
Gate: Sable.
Rebased on main at 36244e5; current head 7c76fac. Focused frontend 31/31, backend route/model 27/27, frontend TypeScript and backend TypeScript lint pass. The two new race/error tests both fail against the prior detached-write implementation and pass with the restored fix.
CodeRabbit comment 4366602417 is addressed: IDENTITY.md read/modify/write is awaited and serialized per account within the backend process. Failed rename sync returns identity_projection_retryable (503), and the queue releases for retry. The overlap test holds a rename write while a Persona edit arrives and verifies the final Name and Persona together. The Persona-only profile payload is also asserted to contain no name.
Limitation: the queue is process-local, matching the current single backend replica; independent backend replicas and other IDENTITY.md writers are not coordinated by this queue. Please assess this scope in the code gate. Fresh Sable code gate and UX verification of the rebased frontend at 390/1440 remain pending. No deploy or live settings write was performed.
Sable HOLD 5638123193 addressed: the actual local identity reader returns empty only for ENOENT and propagates other filesystem errors; the gateway reader propagates exec errors and preserves failed cat status. Its other caller (file preview) now reports read failures through its existing error handler. Added a route regression using the real local reader with an existing-file EACCES probe, plus a gateway exec failure test that executes the generated shell for missing, readable and invalid files. Four focused backend suites passed 60/60; route/model rerun 27/27 after strengthening the existing-file probe. The old local reader mutant reaches EACCES, then fails the status assertion (200 instead of 503). Scoped production lint and diff check pass. Frontend unchanged from UX-PASS d107ab5. Fresh code gate and CI remain pending.
CodeRabbit #2592 (comment) fixed at c9354d0: the gateway executes a Node read with the path as a separate argv entry; only ENOENT becomes empty. Unlike shell test -e, inaccessible parent directories retain EACCES. The real generated command regression now chmods the parent to 000 and verifies failure/EACCES, alongside missing/readable/invalid-file controls. Backend focused 45/45 and scoped production lint pass.
CI frontend failure fixed in the same commit: the layout presence test still searched for a comma-terminated input selector after the CSS group had been split. It now checks the exact input rule; no rendered CSS or components changed. Focused layout/Settings/Policy suites pass 264/264. Existing UX-render evidence still applies to the unchanged product frontend files. Fresh Sable code gate and new-head CI pending.
Otto HOLD #2592 (review) addressed at 7c76fac: local identity reads now use resolveOpenClawWorkspacePath, the same resolver as the writer (OPENCLAW_WORKSPACE_ROOT, then CLAWDBOT_WORKSPACE_DIR, then the local default). Real-file PATCH regressions cover both ROOT-only and DIR-only configurations, with PATH unset and different runtime/database Names. Rename preserves Persona content; Persona-only save retains runtime Name. Backend focused 47/47; old-path mutant fails both new real-file cases, restored cases pass 2/2. Scoped lint/diff pass; frontend unchanged. Fresh Otto and Sable gates plus CI pending.
Remaining limitations named by Otto: file-editor GET still uses its preexisting empty-on-read-error response; process-local queue does not cover other writers or overlapping backend replicas (including rolling-update surge). The gateway chmod-000 regression assumes an unprivileged runner, as used by current CI. This change addresses the local reader/writer path mismatch and makes no broader synchronization claim.

Walkthrough
The frontend narrows agent identity editing and removes tool and context policy controls. The Session schema removes context settings. Backend changes update OpenClaw identity-file reading and writing to preserve existing content in name-only edits, serialize updates per instance within the process, and propagate read and write failures.
The policy editor removes tool-approval and context state, validation, save behavior, and controls. The Session interface and schema remove contextSettings and shouldCompact(). Trust, memory, and quota functionality remains.

Non-OpenClaw installations expose display-name editing without Instructions or Persona controls. OpenClaw installations retain Persona editing. Updates omit persona fields when the persona is unchanged.
Identity-file readers return empty content when the file is missing and propagate other read or execution errors. Tests cover missing files, readable files, and failures.
The route serializes identity updates per instance within the process. Persona edits rebuild the file using the effective display name. Name-only edits preserve other content and write only when content changes. Read and write failures propagate through route handling.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2590: Audits the same Settings controls and identifies Instructions, tool approvals, and Context settings as lacking effective runtime readers.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 7c76f
Name edits can report success without updating the runtime identity, and read failures can appear as empty files. Resolve these behaviors and the privilege-sensitive test before merging.

The title "TASK-458: remove unenforced agent settings controls" names the main change: removing per-agent Settings controls that no active runtime reads. The changeset removes Instructions, Policy tool-approval and context controls, the Session.contextSettings field, and shouldCompact. The title omits the OpenClaw IDENTITY.md persona and name-handling changes, which is acceptable because it does not need to cover every detail. The ticket prefix is a minor addition and does not make the title misleading.

The Context group and Instructions are hidden in v2, and the removed Session context settings have no production reader. Persona fails the requested check that nothing reads the removed fields. The registry PATCH persists persona and, for OpenClaw, builds and writes its IDENTITY.md from that value (backend/routes/registry/agent-config.ts:411–426). Provisioning also reads the stored persona to seed IDENTITY.md (backend/routes/registry/reprovision.ts:248–260). Before this PR, v2 Identity Save sent persona; now it sends only displayName. This removes an active identity control and, on a display-name edit, the same PATCH calls buildIdentityContent(..., persona || {}), replacing the identity file without its existing vibe, domain, or notes.
Keep the effective OpenClaw persona editor or preserve and expose an equivalent supported identity path; ensure a display-name edit retains the existing persona. The exact-head Settings and Policy suites pass 25/25 and git diff --check passes, but those tests do not cover this OpenClaw path. UX gate is separate.

UX-GATE: PASS @ 7628f21 — TASK-458 Settings, rendered head vs main (bf0bd59) at 1440 and 390, en and zh-CN, for a BYO Codex and a hosted agent
Credit to @kai for a clean removal: no orphan group heading and no empty section is left behind, and Save identity now does something visible.
I built this exact head (index-Ch2a_Y0f) and main (index-mM7rF0M0). Both were rendered from the same fixture at /v2/agents/<agent>/default, with every request routed and no live API.

Instructions is hidden. None of Instructions / Persona / Tone / Tool approvals / Maximum tokens / Save policy, or their zh strings 指令 / 角色设定 / 工具审批 / 保存策略, appear in any arm.
Policy is never empty, because Memory renders unconditionally. Every remaining group keeps its own act: Save trust mode, Save memory.
zh-CN: 显示名称 / 保存身份设定 (106×34), 信任模式 / 记忆 / 配额. No raw keys came from this diff.
Nothing this diff touches overflows: scrollWidth equals clientWidth at both widths, with no page errors.
Pre-existing on main and outside this diff, not blocking:
At 390 en, the Wake/Pods sections run 349 px wide from x 50 and end at 399 on a 390 viewport. The boxes are identical on main.
At 390 the remaining word acts are 34 px tall, below the phone 44 px rule.
On Sable's CODE HOLD: if the persona editor comes back for OpenClaw, show it only where IDENTITY.md actually reads it, with no fieldset on agents that ignore it. That is a code-touching head move, so I re-gate it with the same harness.
HOLD relay: @kai, Sable has GATE: HOLD on #2592 at 7628f21 (review 5637423696), and no new commit has landed since. Read the review on the PR, fix what it names, push, then re-ask Sable on the PR with the exact head.
The name-only repair closes that arm of my prior HOLD: it changes the existing Name line instead of rebuilding IDENTITY.md with an empty Persona. The OpenClaw editor is restored, and the other runtimes keep it hidden. The removed Session fields still have no production reader.
[P2] A Persona-only save now resets the runtime Name to the technical instance id. V2AgentIdentitySection.tsx:81-90 intentionally omits an unchanged displayName when submitting edited Persona. Therefore renamedIdentity and effectiveDisplayName are undefined in the registry PATCH. The Persona branch at backend/routes/registry/agent-config.ts:426 calls buildIdentityContent(effectiveDisplayName || normalizedInstanceId, persona), replacing the existing display name with the instance id. The UI and portable User label retain the old display name, leaving the active runtime identity inconsistent.
I reproduced this through the actual PATCH handler with the suite's existing mocked provisioner: installation displayName and existing IDENTITY.md Name were Scout the researcher, instanceId was curator, and the request contained only { instanceId: 'curator', persona: { tone: 'professional' } }. The request returned 200 and did not call the rename service, but the file writer received - **Name:** curator. The assertion that it retain Scout the researcher failed.
Preserve the current runtime Name when Persona is edited without a rename, or resolve the existing canonical display name before rebuilding. Add a Persona-only route regression whose displayName differs from instanceId; do not require an unnecessary rename just to edit Persona.

The temporary file was removed. git diff --check bf0bd5930585caf42892ade534b39fa53eb5490b HEAD passed and the checkout is clean. Frontend suites were not run here because this checkout has no frontend dependencies. UX rendering remains a separate gate.

Prevent a persona edit from restoring an old Name.
A name-only PATCH saves the new display name but can return before its detached IDENTITY.md write finishes. If a persona-only PATCH then reads the old file, existingName takes precedence over the saved display name. The persona write can finish after the rename write and restore the old Name. Serialize identity-file updates for each instance, and complete the rename write before reporting success. Add a test that controls the read and write order. As per coding guidelines, check “Async races: concurrent calls, double-firing, out-of-order completion.”

UX-GATE: PASS @ 1bd855b — rendered at 2d64b9c; 1bd855b only touches the backend, and the frontend/ tree is byte-identical (0154352d at both heads)
Reviewer: ux-lead (UX gate). A code gate is separate (Sable).
What I checked (en 1440/390, zh-CN 390, local build, fixture API, no network)
Persona shows for OpenClaw only. A Persona fieldset appears on /v2/agents/openclaw/default with Tone, Specialties, Boundaries and Persona notes. It is absent on codex (1440/390) and launch-plan-agent (1440), whose Identity section is still just Display name. This matches my earlier stance: show persona only where IDENTITY.md reads it.
Save button. Disabled at rest. A name edit or a Tone change enables it, and reverting either disables it again.
PATCH bodies are scoped. A name-only save sends {displayName:"Scout Two",instanceId} with no persona. A persona-only save sends {persona:{tone, specialties[],boundaries[],customInstructions},instanceId} with no displayName. Specialties and Boundaries are split on commas into arrays.
Signal. The fieldset has a 1px --v2-border-soft border, 4px radius and no shadow. The legend is 14/700. The controls are 4px radius on a white fill. Inputs are 13px at 1440 and 16px at 390, so iOS won't zoom on focus. Persona notes is a 3-row vertical-resize textarea.
zh-CN. All the new strings render with no raw keys: 角色设定 / 语气 / 专业 / 专长(用逗号分隔)/ 行为边界(用逗号分隔)/ 角色备注 / 保存身份设定. Nothing wraps badly at 390.
Overflow. scrollWidth equals clientWidth on every arm. The probe flags .v2-agent-wake-pods__section at 390 en, but it is identical on main and on 7628f21, so it predates this PR.
Non-blocking. In my fixture, the "Saved" status (identitySaved) did not show 400 ms after either save; the refresh after the PATCH appears to reset it. This head didn't touch that save-confirmation path, so I'm not holding on it. Worth a live check after deploy.

The harness serves the build from disk and answers the API from a fixture. That fixture includes an OpenClaw install with a stored persona. PATCH bodies are captured; nothing is sent to api.commonly.me.
#2592 (comment) — fixed in current head 1532777: name-only edits replace only IDENTITY.md's Name line, preserving existing Persona and manual content. Persona-only edits retain the existing Name. Both PATCH paths have route regressions; focused backend route/Session suites pass 24/24.
CodeRabbit finding 4366602417 is valid and fixed in d107ab5. The route now awaits IDENTITY.md read/modify/write and serializes overlapping edits per account in the backend process. Rename write failures return retryable 503 instead of success; the queue releases for retry. Two new tests prove the pending-write overlap and failure/retry paths; both fail against the prior implementation. Focused backend 26/26 passes. The Persona-only AgentProfile payload is now asserted to omit name as suggested.
The queue is process-local and does not coordinate independent backend replicas or other file writers; that limitation is explicit in the PR for the fresh gate.

UX-GATE: PASS @ d107ab5 — re-rendered at the head, en+zh, 1440/390; the frontend reads the same as my PASS @ 1bd855b
Credit: ux-lead (visual gate). Code, the CR race fix and the process-local queue limit are Sable's to assess, not covered here.
What moved: after the rebase onto 36244e5, per-file patch-ids are unchanged for V2AgentIdentitySection.tsx, useAgentSettings.ts, v2-agent-policy.css and v2-agent-settings.css. en.json, zh-CN.json and V2AgentPolicy.tsx moved for one reason. Main added a profileUnavailable alert to the Policy controls, and this PR now removes that alert, its two strings, and the !installation?.profile guard together with the controls they belonged to. That's right: the alert described controls that no longer exist. d107ab5 itself touches only backend files.
Measured on the build of d107ab5 (fixture, no network). Arms: openclaw 1440 en / 390 en / 390 zh, codex 1440 / 390, launch-plan-agent 1440.
Identity: openclaw shows Display name plus the Persona fieldset (Tone, Specialties, Boundaries, Persona notes). codex and launch-plan-agent show Display name only. Save identity is disabled at rest, enables on an edit, and disables again on revert, in every arm.
Persona fieldset: 1px soft border, radius 4. Controls are 13px at 1440 and 16px at 390. Sizes are identical to 2d64b9c: 680×549 / 290×552.

Distinguish a missing identity file from a read failure.
A reachable name-only OpenClaw update can have no IDENTITY.md: provisioning seeds the file only when the profile has non-empty persona fields. In that case, readOpenClawIdentityFile returns '', the replacement finds no Name line, and the route skips the write before returning { success: true }.
The helper also returns '' when a local or Kubernetes read fails. Do not write a minimal file for every empty result, because that can replace existing content that was unreadable. Make the helper distinguish a missing or genuinely empty file from a read failure. Then create the minimal identity file only for the former, and let the existing 503 retry path handle the latter.

When a Persona-only edit reads an absent or empty IDENTITY.md, assert that writeWorkspaceIdentityFile uses installation.displayName as the runtime name and writes the edited Persona.
When a name-only edit reads nonempty manual content without a - **Name:** line, assert that writeWorkspaceIdentityFile is not called, preserving that content.
The existing tests always provide a Name line, so regressions in both branches can pass.

P2 — An unreadable IDENTITY.md is reported as a successful rename (backend/routes/registry/agent-config.ts:434-453). The newly used readOpenClawIdentityFile helper catches filesystem/gateway read errors and returns an empty string (agentProvisionerService.ts:1547-1563; the K8s implementation does the same). The name-only branch replaces the Name line in that empty string, finds no difference, skips the write and returns HTTP 200. The database and displayed label have changed while the existing runtime file still has the old Name. The new retryable-write-error handling cannot catch this read failure because the reader swallowed it.
Independent route probe uses the actual local identity reader, with an existing file's readFileSync forced to throw EACCES only for /curator/IDENTITY.md. It asserts the real reader reached that failure, then expects identity_projection_retryable/503. Actual response is 200. A temporary control propagating the reader's error makes the probe and all 26 supplied backend tests pass (27/27); restoring the original helper reproduces the 200. The original route/models are mocked exactly as in the supplied route suite; the reader is the actual implementation. Temporary edits/probes were removed.
Use an error-aware/strict read for this read-modify-write path and surface a retryable projection failure when the file could not be read. Distinguish an absent file from an unreadable file. Include the underlying reader behavior in the regression; mocking it as a rejected promise would miss the production empty-string fallback.
Queue assessment: the new queue correctly awaits and serializes this route's writes per instance within one backend process and releases after failure. A read-only cluster check currently reports backend spec.replicas=1 and readyReplicas=1, matching the stated scope. It does not coordinate independent backend processes or the separate identity-file writer; that limitation is accurately disclosed. The controlled overlapping rename/persona and write-failure/retry tests pass.
Verification: backend focused 26/26, frontend focused 31/31, backend/frontend typechecks pass, scoped backend lint has no errors, targeted frontend lint has zero errors / two warnings, and diff check passes. Session.contextSettings/shouldCompact have no remaining runtime consumers. The removed settings no longer submit their unused profile fields; OpenClaw Persona remains and is only sent when edited. Existing profile compatibility endpoints remain. CodeRabbit's race finding is fixed and answered; its linked fallback was accepted by the press precheck per Lily's pod ruling. UX Lead independently recorded en/zh 390/1440 PASS 5638116122; I did not perform a separate browser walk or deploy.
Sable HOLD #2592 (review) addressed at d9e4e3c. Local IDENTITY.md reads now return empty only for ENOENT, propagating EACCES and other errors. Gateway reads propagate exec failure and retain failed cat exit status instead of converting it to empty success. The real-reader route probe now reaches EACCES and asserts retryable 503/no file write; reverting the reader reproduces 200 and kills that assertion. Gateway regression also exercises the shell against missing/readable/invalid files. Four focused backend suites 60/60; route/model rerun 27/27. Frontend remains byte-identical to UX-PASS d107ab5.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Clears CODE HOLD 5638123193. The actual local identity reader now treats only ENOENT as absent and propagates EACCES/other failures. Gateway pod/exec failures propagate, and a failed cat retains its error status. The route therefore returns identity_projection_retryable/503 instead of claiming a successful rename over an unreadable file.
Verification: three focused backend suites pass 45/45, including the real-reader route failure and gateway shell controls for absent/readable/invalid files. My original independent actual-reader EACCES probe now passes unchanged. Backend typecheck passes; scoped lint has zero errors / 137 existing warnings; diff check passes. Temporary probes were removed. The earlier overlapping rename/persona and failed-write retry tests remain green.
The queue remains scoped to this route in one process, matching the observed single ready backend replica; it does not coordinate independent backend replicas or other identity-file writers. Frontend is byte-identical to d107ab5, carrying the earlier 31/31 checks, typecheck and UX Lead's en/zh 390/1440 PASS 5638116122. No separate browser walk or deployment was performed during this re-gate.
CodeRabbit's race finding is fixed/answered, and no current unanswered inline findings are present. Fresh CI/CodeRabbit remain required before press. No new code defect found.

Fixed #2592 (comment) in c9354d0. The gateway now executes a Node fs read with the path as a separate argv entry. Only ENOENT becomes empty output; an inaccessible parent preserves EACCES. Regression executes the generated command with a chmod-000 parent and asserts failure/EACCES, plus missing/readable/invalid-file controls. Backend 45/45 and scoped lint pass.
The CI layout test also now targets the existing input selector correctly; product CSS/components unchanged, focused frontend 264/264 pass. Fresh gate and CI requested.
The delta since d9e4e3c is the ENOENT-only Node gateway read in readOpenClawIdentityFile plus its test. The test now runs the real command and covers an inaccessible parent (chmod 000), which returns EACCES.
Own runs at this head: agentProvisionerServiceK8s, Session.contextSettings and the installer-gate suite give 45/45. The frontend v2-layout-invariants, V2AgentSettingsPage and V2AgentPolicy suites give 264/264.
Mutation: changing the gateway read to swallow every error turns distinguishes missing identities from read and parent-access failures red (1 failed, 17 passed).
Not covered: the security review at this head, which stays with Rhea.

Do not convert identity read failures into empty content.
The updated reader propagates non-ENOENT errors, but this route catches them and returns HTTP 200 with empty content. AgentsHub then sets the identity editor to empty content, so a gateway or permission failure appears as a blank IDENTITY.md instead of a failed read.
Suggested fix
- let content = '';- try {- content = await readOpenClawIdentityFile(accountId);- } catch (_) { /* fall through */ }+ const content = await readOpenClawIdentityFile(accountId);
This preserves the intended missing-file behavior: ENOENT still returns empty content, while other failures reach the existing error handler. This is separate from the test-privilege concern because it affects the production GET response and the settings UI.

128-131: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Make the read-failure test independent of process privileges.
If the test runs as root, chmodSync(dir, 0o000) does not reliably prevent the child process from reading IDENTITY.md. The child can exit successfully, so this test fails despite a correct reader. Use a deterministic non-ENOENT path error, such as ENOTDIR, or run the child with an unprivileged identity when testing EACCES. Based on learnings, permission-error tests are unreliable when they run as root.

Otto, gate measured at c9354d0749cd1c8d41f11207633ba641cbcd225c.
GATE finding: HOLD for a reproduced local OpenClaw identity projection regression. This is a new second-seat gate, not a supersession of Sable's separate review.
backend/services/agentProvisionerService.ts:1553 reads IDENTITY.md under OPENCLAW_WORKSPACE_PATH || '/workspace'. Its writer at lines 350–355/368 uses resolveOpenClawWorkspacePath: OPENCLAW_WORKSPACE_ROOT || CLAWDBOT_WORKSPACE_DIR || '/home/node/clawd'. The new read/modify/write route now depends on these being the same file, but the supported local Compose configuration sets ROOT and DIR and never PATH (docker-compose.dev.yml:107–114). This is a reachable configuration, not a hypothetical missing file.
I exercised the real local reader and writer through the real PATCH handler, with only the installation/profile/identity database seams mocked. A temporary workspace was populated through the actual writer with runtime Name Runtime name, while the installation label was Database label. With K8s mode off, ROOT set to that workspace and PATH unset:
A name-only PATCH to New name returns 200, but the actual file still says Runtime name. The reader looked in the wrong root, returned empty for ENOENT, and the new route skipped the replacement/write. The same test with main's prior route passes: it writes New name. This is a regression introduced by making name-only updates depend on the reader.
A persona-only PATCH returns 200 and overwrites the actual file's Name with Database label, losing the runtime Name that this PR promises to preserve.
Pointing both variables at the same root makes both cases pass. Temporarily changing the reader to use the writer's shared path resolver also makes the entire nine-case probe pass. All mutations were restored; no fix was committed.
Required remedy: make local reads and writes resolve the same account workspace, and add actual-filesystem route regressions for both name-only and persona-only saves with the supported ROOT-only configuration. The current persona preservation test mocks the reader and uses the same runtime/database label, so it cannot catch this mismatch.
The requested queue checks otherwise pass. A queued follower completes after either a held read rejection or a held write rejection; the failed rename returns 503 and the follower returns 200. Another instance completes while the first instance's write is blocked. With a working reader, persona-only updates retain an existing runtime Name different from the installation label, and a genuinely absent file falls back to the installation label. These use deterministic barriers, not elapsed-time assertions.
Scope limit: the map serializes only this route in one backend process. The file editor route and other file writers do not participate. Chart dev values specify one backend replica and disable HPA, but the deployment uses RollingUpdate/maxSurge=1, so even that configuration permits overlapping backend processes during deployment. The queue therefore improves steady-state requests in one process; it is not cross-process coordination. This disclosed limitation predates the queue's protection boundary and is separate from the local-file blocker above. I did not verify live replica count or exercise a real cluster rollout.
Temporary registry.agent-config-otto-probe.test.js, --testNamePattern=Otto: 7 pass/2 fail at this head, both failures described above; the shared-resolver mutation gives 9/9 pass. Replaying only the name-only cases with main's prior route gives 2/2 pass. Probe and scripts retained under /tmp/otto-2592-probe/; the temporary test was removed from the checkout.
Scoped ESLint on the four changed backend production files: zero errors, 137 warnings. git diff --check and trial merge against main e0ad33dac are clean. No intervening main commit touches the changed backend paths. Worktree restored clean.
CodeRabbit's completed review 5638233403 also names two minor residuals, which I checked in source: files.ts:369 still catches a non-ENOENT identity read failure and returns 200/empty to the editor; the new chmod-000 regression assumes an unprivileged test process and can fail under root. The GET swallow already existed before this PR, and the test passes in this unprivileged Mac run and current CI. Both remain named limitations; the local reader/writer mismatch above is the blocking regression.
Exact-head Actions, required Test & Coverage, Service Tests, E2E and CodeQL have completed successfully. CodeRabbit and coderabbit-threads are successful, with zero pending/failing checks. Cancelled count, PR targets main and Stale-base merge guard attempts have successful same-name runs at this head. GitHub is non-draft/MERGEABLE/UNSTABLE. Green CI does not cover the real local path pairing reproduced above.
Otto HOLD #2592 (review) fixed at 7c76fac. Local reads now use the writer's shared workspace resolver. Actual-file route regressions cover ROOT-only and DIR-only with PATH unset: name-only save preserves Persona content, and Persona-only save keeps runtime Name distinct from database label. Backend 47/47, scoped lint/diff pass; old-path mutant fails both real-file cases and restored cases pass. Product frontend unchanged.
The preexisting file-editor GET empty-on-error behavior, unprivileged chmod test assumption, and process-local queue/rollout scope remain disclosed limitations. They are not claimed fixed by this path correction.

Sable CODE gate: kai/task458-agent-settings at 7c76facf (#2592): PASS
Scope: the delta from c9354d0 is two files, backend/services/agentProvisionerService.ts (the reader now calls resolveOpenClawWorkspacePath, the same resolver the writer uses) and the registry installer-gate test. This closes Otto's HOLD on c9354d0 (review 5638236433): the name-only and persona-only PATCH cases now run against a real filesystem with ROOT-only and DIR-only configs.
Verification:
Node 22, three suites at 7c76fac: registry.agent-config-installer-gate, Session.contextSettings, agentProvisionerServiceK8s, 47/47 pass.
Mutation: reverting the reader to OPENCLAW_WORKSPACE_PATH fails both new cases (ROOT and DIR variants). Restored; the worktree is clean.
Non-blocking residuals, both named by Otto and CodeRabbit: files.ts still returns 200 with empty content on a non-ENOENT identity read failure for the editor (pre-existing), and the chmod-000 regression assumes an unprivileged process, so it can fail when run as root.

This review supersedes HOLD 5638236433 at dead head c9354d0749cd1c8d41f11207633ba641cbcd225c. That HOLD is void for this amended head. The local reader/writer path mismatch is closed.
Checked out this exact commit. The amendment changes only the local identity reader and its actual-filesystem route regressions: two files, 49 insertions/two deletions. The reader now uses the same resolveOpenClawWorkspacePath(accountId) as the writer, including ROOT precedence, DIR fallback and the account subdirectory. The queue, gateway reader, authorization logic and product frontend are unchanged.
Replayed the original failing instrument unchanged: 9/9 probes now pass. In a ROOT-only local configuration, name-only saves update the real file's Name while preserving the rest of its content; persona-only saves retain a runtime Name different from the database label. Matching PATH and ROOT remains successful. The same probe also rechecks queued read/write failures, another instance's progress during a held write, and the genuinely absent-file fallback. These are route-level probes with real local file reads/writes for the path cases and controlled barriers for queue cases.
The committed tests additionally cover ROOT-only and DIR-only configurations through the actual reader and writer, independently asserting name-only byte preservation and persona-only Name preservation. Restoring only the old reader path logic makes both new cases fail; restoring the amendment returns the source to the reviewed blob.
Temporary original registry.agent-config-otto-probe.test.js, --testNamePattern=Otto: 9/9 pass; artifact /tmp/otto-2592-probe/regate.txt. Temporary test removed afterward.
Old-path mutation against the committed suite, --testNamePattern='uses the real': 2/2 fail, ROOT and DIR; artifact /tmp/otto-2592-probe/old-path-regate.txt. Source restored.
Scoped ESLint on four changed backend production files: zero errors, 137 warnings. Diff check and trial merge with main ce093781fe1d202bd80fea25f34dd2734a42a310 are clean; no intervening main commit touches the changed backend paths. Checkout restored clean.
No remaining defect found in the requested path/queue/Name properties. Existing limits remain: serialization covers this route in one process, including release after errors; it does not coordinate another backend process or the file editor. RollingUpdate/maxSurge=1 permits process overlap even with one steady-state replica. The identity-file GET still converts read errors to 200/empty, and the chmod-000 test assumes an unprivileged process. Those two minor CodeRabbit findings were named in the prior verdict and are unchanged. They do not reopen the fixed local-file regression.
Exact-head CI is complete with 19 successful check runs, one expected skip, and zero pending/failing. Two cancelled base-guard attempts have successful same-name runs at this head. Required Test & Coverage, Service Tests, E2E, CLI/MCP/hosted-runtime, backend, frontend, chart and CodeQL pass. CodeRabbit reports “Review completed”; coderabbit-threads reports all threads answered. GitHub is non-draft/MERGEABLE/CLEAN. The final trial merge against current main is clean.

What
TASK-458 (D44): remove per-agent Settings controls that no active runtime reads.
