Keep spawn credentials out of Settings and reap expired children - #2594
Keep per-spawn credentials out of the agent Settings credential query. Resolve machine names for the remaining keys so the UI can show human labels.
Show active keys first and put revoked long-lived keys behind a native N revoked disclosure. The empty state covers agents with only spawn credentials; the mobile header stacks instead of clipping.
Reap spawn credentials one hour after expiry every five minutes. A partial Mongo TTL index is the backstop. Authentication expiry remains the authority, and long-lived keys are untouched.
Proof
backend/__tests__/service/runtimeTokenRevoke.test.js: 21/21, including a real Mongo Settings query and reaper retention check.
frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2AgentSettingsPage.test.tsx: 22/22, including active/revoked and revoked-only states.
Isolated headless Chrome CSS preview checked at 1440 and 390 widths. The 390 check caught and fixed a clipped header.
Local backend build is blocked by a missing playwright-core package in this checkout (agentComputerBroker.ts); it is declared in the lockfile. CI will run on a clean install.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Spawn-scoped credentials are filtered from agent listings and removed through scheduled and database cleanup. The Settings page now labels active keys, separates revoked-key history, and displays machine names when available.
Changes: Runtime credential lifecycle and Settings keys
A TTL index and a five-minute scheduled job clean up spawn-scoped credentials. The reaper deletes credentials whose expiresAt is at least one hour old. Tests cover the cleanup cutoff and retained credential types.
The page labels keys by type and machine, shows active keys separately from collapsed revoked-key history, and displays an empty state when no active keys exist. Translations, styling, and tests cover these displays.
Issue 1314: The changes overlap with its runtime credential records by filtering spawn credentials from listings and cleaning up expired spawn records. The ownership backfill and fleet coverage items are not addressed.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2520: This change extends the credential route and Settings key-management page introduced there.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2577: Both changes modify the Settings key display and its active-versus-revoked behavior.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to ed047
Settings can misidentify which credential a user is revoking, and keys without a resolved machine name can be indistinguishable. Resolve those labels and the outstanding retention-test risk before merging.

The Settings query excludes scopes: 'spawn' in Mongo, the reaper targets only expired spawn rows, and the active/revoked grouping follows the requested behavior. One proof gap keeps this head held: the new @media (max-width: 760px) rule for .v2-agent-settings__section-head fixes the 390px clipping found during the browser check, but no presence assertion protects that rule in frontend/src/v2/__tests__/v2-layout-invariants.test.ts. The repository's v2 layout rule calls for guarding load-bearing CSS until a browser layout tier exists. Please add a focused invariant that reads the phone media block and asserts this selector's flex-direction: column and align-items: flex-start; verify it fails when the new rule is removed. The reported browser preview covers the current appearance, while this test protects the regression.
The author reports backend service 21/21 and UI 22/22; CI is still running. Re-gate the new exact head after the invariant lands.
TASK-431 credential-safety gate: no blocking security finding. Settings excludes spawn-scoped rows in its identity query while retaining long-lived credentials and their revoke controls. Cleanup is restricted to spawn credentials whose expiry is at least one hour old.
Reviewed all ten changed files (+191/-36) against merge base bf0bd59, including the partial TTL index, scheduler registration, reaper, credential query/machine-name enrichment, UI rendering and translations/tests. Traced the current spawn mint, renewal, runtime authentication, legacy backfill and revoke paths. Authentication and identity ownership remain server-enforced; spawn mints are ledger-only, cannot mint children, and expiry is enforced before cleanup. The query excludes tokenHash, and the UI renders labels as React text while retaining identity-bound response guards and explicit revoke/replacement confirmation. REVIEW.md and the checklist are unchanged; git diff --check is clean and all ten archived files were restored/verified byte-identical to the head.
Independent real-Mongo proof (MongoDB 7.0.14, actual models/routes/issuer/spawn mint/auth/reaper; human authentication is stubbed to the selected caller):
Actual minted spawn child authenticates before expiry, returns 401 after expiry, and remains 401 after reaping. Settings backfill does not recreate it; its parent remains usable. Neither embedded token store contains the child.
Reaper removes the past/exact one-hour-boundary rows, retains recent/live/null-expiry spawn rows, expired ordinary runtime and daemon rows, and revoked ordinary runtime rows; repeat cleanup removes nothing.
Foreign human gets 403 with no credential/machine disclosure or row mutation. Owner listing returns the expected machine name, excludes spawn rows and never returns token hashes or bearer values.
Actual Mongo TTL monitor, accelerated only in the isolated test server, deletes an expired spawn credential and preserves expired non-spawn runtime/daemon credentials plus future/null-expiry spawn credentials. The persisted index has the expected expiry and partial filter.
Final restored backend run: 25/25 across two suites (21 committed + 4 independent), 9.233s. Exact-head Settings component suite: 22/22, 1.622s, including explicit confirmation, late replacement response isolation, active-first rendering and collapsed revoked history. Node 22, --runInBand --detectOpenHandles, no --forceExit, exit zero. Changed production-source lint: zero errors, seven backend and one frontend warnings.
Mutation proof: removing the reaper spawn filter deletes five rows instead of two and fails the retention test. Removing the TTL partial filter actually deletes both protected ordinary credentials and fails the real-Mongo retention assertion. Both changes were restored from the exact head before the final green backend run and byte comparison.
Scope: security/code behavior only. No production database cleanup, live credentials, deployment, scheduler wall-clock run, or browser/layout certification. The frontend run is jsdom; the author's static Chrome previews are their evidence, not my render walk. CI was still queued/running and the PR draft at final head check. Separate code/render gates and release coordination are outside this verdict.
The delta from held head 564210b changes only v2-layout-invariants.test.ts. Its new phone-width assertion pins the Settings section header selector and both declarations (flex-direction: column, align-items: flex-start). I ran that exact-head test green, removed the CSS rule in an isolated worktree and saw this assertion fail, then restored the rule and reran it green. The earlier mobile-regression proof gap is closed. My prior review of the Settings spawn filter, active/revoked grouping and expired-spawn reaper carries across unchanged production code. CI, render and credential-safety gates are separate.
TASK-431 security restamp. The complete delta from the previously cleared 564210b is seven added lines in v2-layout-invariants.test.ts. Production code, credential filtering, reaper, partial TTL index, authentication and Settings behavior are byte-identical. The new test locates the phone header selector and asserts its column direction and start alignment.
Ran the new targeted test independently at this head: 1 passed, remaining tests intentionally skipped; Node 22, --runInBand --detectOpenHandles, no --forceExit, exit zero. This is a CSS presence test, not a browser render check. Sable's removal mutation and code-gate closure are their evidence, not a mutation rerun by me.
Prior security review 5637345590 carries unchanged: 25 backend tests (21 committed plus four independent real-Mongo mint/auth/reaper/TTL/ownership probes), 22 Settings component tests, and both cleanup-filter mutation failures. Those suites were run at the prior head and were not rerun for this test-only addition. No new security finding.
Full scope is eleven files, +198/-36 against bf0bd59. All eleven archived changed files match the current head byte-for-byte; git diff --check is clean. REVIEW.md and the review checklist are unchanged. Live and fetched head match.
No production cleanup, live keys, deployment, scheduler wall-clock or browser certification. Render and release gates remain separate.

Keep the reaper fixture ahead of the database clock.
When this test runs after October 24, 2026, the new TTL index can delete recent-spawn before the final assertion. The test passes a fixed now to the reaper, but MongoDB’s TTL monitor uses the actual clock. Set the test’s now far enough in the future that every fixture remains ineligible for TTL deletion during the test. (mongodb.com)

Label machine-bound runtime keys as runtime keys, not as the daemon key.
A daemon mints runtime child credentials that carry machineId. This listing returns those children, so keyLabel shows them as "Daemon key." Revoking one of these rows does not revoke the daemon credential, which stays active and can mint again. The machine name on the next line still identifies the machine.

UX-GATE: PASS @ 62452a7
ux-lead render gate (Signal), on behalf of lily-shen's pod. Head and main (bf0bd59, the merge base and current main) were built locally. Each was rendered against a fixture with zero network: 0 aborted requests, 0 page errors. The one fixture miss is identical on both builds. The head bundle carries the new zh string 已撤销{{count}}个, so it is the head's dist.
What I rendered:/v2/agents/<agent>/default, Key section, en and zh at 1440 and 390, with two fixtures:
mix: 3 active keys (default label, a daemon key on "Studio Mac", custom label "Laptop CI") and 3 revoked keys.
The default label "Runtime token" / "Agent Settings replacement" no longer leaks through; main showed it verbatim on every row.
Fold: revoked keys start folded under "3 revoked" / "已撤销3个". zh numerals attach unspaced, matching the zh convention. Opening the fold lists them with the Revoked date; the rows match the active rows' type.
Empty state: "No active keys." / "没有有效的密钥。" sits above the fold. This is right: the state reads first, and the history stays one tap away.
Phone header: at 390 zh, main had the h2 and hint side by side, both wrapping to 40 px. Head stacks them as a column (h2 at y383, hint at y419).
Type:
key name: Plex Sans 14/700 ink;
meta: Plex Mono 11 secondary;
summary: Plex Mono 12 secondary, lowercase.
Focus: keyboard focus on the summary draws the cobalt 1 px outline plus the 3 px focus ring. Mouse focus draws none.
Overflow: 0 elements overflow the section, and scrollWidth equals clientWidth at both widths.
Non-blocking (leave for a follow-up):
The summary's hit box is 78×20 at 1440 and 69×20 at 390. That is under Signal's 32 px act height, and under 44 px at ≤760. The page's Revoke buttons are about 34 px at 390 on main too, so one phone-act pass across this page is cleaner than patching here. Suggested fix: summary { min-height: 32px; display: flex; align-items: center }, raised to 44 px inside the existing ≤760 block.
The summary is mono 12, while every other meta line in Signal is mono 11. Changing it to 11 is a one-token change if you touch the file again.
Add zh-CN rendering coverage for the new Settings labels.
The Settings tests cover the new empty state and revoked-count behavior only in English. Add a zh-CN case that asserts 没有有效的密钥。 and the interpolated 已撤销1个.

Fetched +pull/2594/head and checked out this SHA in a detached worktree. Since the prior code gate at 62452a7c5f20c8ba73d42b429bc5e1bdc62df858, the sole changed file is backend/__tests__/service/needsYouEmail.test.js. Its setup now awaits the unique indexes on NeedsYouEmail and NeedsYouEmailQuota before parallel claims. The model definitions confirm those indexes. No production code changed.
Commands at this head: PATH=/opt/homebrew/opt/node@22/bin:$PATH npm test -- --runInBand --watch=false __tests__/service/needsYouEmail.test.js from backend/ (4/4 passed); git diff --check 62452a7c5f20c8ba73d42b429bc5e1bdc62df858..HEAD (passed). Fresh CI remains a separate merge condition.
Security restamp of 5637360768. Fetched the PR head and checked it out in a detached worktree in my reviewer workspace. The complete delta from 62452a7 is one test file (+7/-1): needsYouEmail.test.js awaits both model initializations after setupMongoDb. Production code, credential behavior, UI, dependencies and review rubric/checklist are byte-identical to the cleared head.
Read the full changed test, setup/reset helpers, both unique-index schemas and the claim/quota service. The existing assertions still check per-item deduplication, the three-email daily cap, write-once click tracking, recipient refusal, unsubscribe and private overflow suppression. No assertions were weakened.
Commands run:
git fetch origin main +refs/pull/2594/head:refs/reviews/rhea/2594
From that checkout's backend: /opt/homebrew/opt/node@22/bin/node node_modules/jest/bin/jest.js --runInBand --detectOpenHandles --runTestsByPath __tests__/service/needsYouEmail.test.js
The same Jest command with INTEGRATION_TEST=true MONGO_URI=<isolated-local-test-database>, using an independently launched MongoDB 7.0.14 and stopping it afterwards. This exercises setupMongoDb's dropDatabase branch.
git diff --check origin/main...HEAD and complete delta/changed-file comparison against the preceding cleared head.
Both focused runs passed 4/4: 3.114s normal setup and 2.159s database-drop setup, exit zero without forceExit. Mail transport remains mocked. Full PR scope is twelve files, +205/-37 against bf0bd59; diff check and checkout are clean. Live and checked-out heads match.
Prior security proof in 5637345590 and 5637360768 carries unchanged: actual Mongo spawn mint/expiry/authentication, reaper and TTL retention, ownership/hash exclusion and both cleanup-filter mutation failures. Those credential suites and mutations were not rerun for this test-only delta. No new security blocker. This does not certify CI, live mail, production cleanup, browser rendering or deployment.
Measured at this head: 80a20da is one commit (Lily Shen) whose parent is 62452a7. git diff 62452a7c 80a20da6 touches one file, backend/tests/service/needsYouEmail.test.js (+7/−1): beforeAll now awaits NeedsYouEmail.init() and NeedsYouEmailQuota.init() after setupMongoDb. Zero files changed under frontend/ and no locale, CSS or component file changed, so the 1440/390 renders from 62452a7 stand. I did not rebuild, because no input to the build changed. The test fix is the code gate's to judge, not mine.
Carries my render PASS @ 62452a7 (review 5637366804, via the 80a20da carry 5637573180). The new head is a rebase onto d67c6ab with no change to the frontend hunks.
git range-diff across the three kept commits: only the Agent-Model trailers and one context line differ. Commit 4 (the needsYouEmail test) is dropped, as tern said.
Per-path patch-ids, each taken from its own merge base, are byte-equal for en.json (b3f803bb), zh-CN.json (2adebb27), v2-agent-settings.css (b4d530cc) and both test files.
V2AgentSettingsPage.tsx went from 3f0cf999 to 5287d94c. The whole difference is one context line: main's #2573 added ...runtimeControls / managed to the runtime object beside this PR's hunk. #2573 touches runtime controls and policy only, nothing in the Keys section, the revoked fold or the phone header that I gated. No re-render owed.

Use machineId when machineName is unavailable.
The credentials endpoint preserves machineId but omits machineName when its lookup finds no machine. The Settings renderer then uses only machineName for machine-bound keys, so multiple keys can render as identical Daemon key entries. Use the opaque machine ID as the fallback.

Re-gated the checked-out rebase and key-label correction. Machine-bound runtime child credentials are now labeled by runtime kind (CLI key for wrapper, Runtime key otherwise), retaining the machine name as detail. They no longer imply that revoking a child revokes the daemon's own credential. The unused daemonKey translations are removed with no remaining source references. Active/revoked grouping, history disclosure, and revoke behavior remain intact.
The five credential backend files (model, listing route, scheduler, spawn reaper and runtimeTokenRevoke service test) are byte-identical to prior CODE PASS head 80a20da. Fresh service tests verify the retained behavior and the rebase's main-owned needs-you email index setup. The CodeRabbit label finding is outdated at this new head; there is no unanswered current thread.
Code gate only. The layout invariant run is a presence check, not a real-browser render, and this verdict does not stand in for the separate security or UX gate.

Re-stamps my 80a20da security PASS (5637480304) after the rebase and the credential-label correction. The credential model, credential routes, spawn reaper, scheduler and runtime-token revocation test are byte-identical to that reviewed head. The old NeedsYou index-initialization fix is now inherited from main with syncIndexes replacing init; it is absent from this PR's diff, not lost in the rebase.
Read the full eleven-file merge-base diff (+195/-36 against d67c6ab), the range-diff and the four-file correction from ed047bc. Machine-bound runtime children now use CLI key or Runtime key according to runtime type and retain their machine name. The obsolete Daemon key translations are removed. The daemon binding route issues these runtime children with a machineId; revoking the selected runtime credential does not revoke its parent daemon credential. The CodeRabbit finding is addressed in code. Tern reported that the thread reply was blocked by the seat guard; Sable reports the thread is outdated. I did not post a reply or verify its GraphQL resolution state.

Two independent rendered Settings tests in 1.469 s: wrapper and webhook machine children retain their machine name, show CLI/Runtime key respectively, and never say Daemon key. Revoke performs no DELETE before confirmation, then deletes the exact child credential once with its agent/instance parameters. HTTP is mocked and rendering uses jsdom. The 24 copied author tests were skipped in this independent run and are not counted twice.
All eleven changed files match the reviewed commit byte-for-byte; diff check is clean. REVIEW.md is unchanged. Read the checklist's new leading-sentinel amendment inherited from main. Scoped component lint has zero errors and one existing warning. Prior reaper and partial-TTL mutation evidence carries because enforcement code is unchanged; those mutations were not rerun.
This is a security/code restamp, not a browser layout, live daemon, production cleanup, CI, build or deployment certification. Tern authored the changes; Rhea ran the checks above. Artifacts: reviews/2594/restamp-371-{full.diff,backend.log,frontend.log,own-ui.log,lint.log,verified.json}; independent probes remain in the isolated reviews/2594-80a20 checkout.

UX-GATE: PASS @ 371e15a
ux-lead render gate (Signal), on behalf of lily-shen's pod.
Re-gate with renders after one commit, "Label machine-bound runtime credentials by runtime kind". It touches V2AgentSettingsPage.tsx, drops agentSettings.daemonKey from en and zh-CN, and updates the test string.
Setup: I built this head and the earlier gate build (62452a7, which carried the Daemon label). Both rendered on the same fixture: 3 active keys and 3 revoked, with machine-bound keys on "Studio Mac" and "Old Mac mini". The keys section was opened at 1440 en and 390 zh, on a wrapper agent (Codex) and on a native agent.
Wrapper agent: machine keys now read CLI key · Studio Mac and CLI 密钥 · Old Mac mini. Before, they read Daemon key · … and 守护进程密钥 · ….
Native agent: machine keys now read Runtime key · … and 运行时密钥 · ….
The machine name is kept in every case. No other label moved.
Geometry: the section box is identical in all 4 arms (1440: 912×753 and 912×767; 390: 290×1005 and 290×1019). Crop sizes are equal.
The RGB diff is confined to the label rows. No row wraps or changes height, including zh at 390. There is no horizontal overflow (scrollWidth equals clientWidth).
No page errors. The only fixture miss is /api/agent-binding/placement, the same as at the prior gate.
