fix(memory): prevent overlapping native appends from losing notes - #2606
Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 10 included reviews per hour; 2 remain after this review.
Walkthrough
The native runtime now uses a shared service to append long-term memory. The service updates legacy and section content, records metadata and history, and uses an atomic MongoDB upsert.
Changes: Native memory append
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Atomic append service backend/services/agentMemoryService.ts, backend/__tests__/service/native-memory-append.test.js
Adds appendLongTermMemory and its arguments interface. The service appends timestamped content, updates both content fields and metadata, records prior content in capped history, and clears sync-dedup fields. Tests cover overlapping appends, legacy records without a long_term section, and the native write dispatch.
The native runtime delegates memory writes to appendLongTermMemory. The dispatcher is exported, and a test checks the dispatch response and persisted memory content.
Team-Commonly/commonly issue 632 — The service adds native-write provenance and capped history. The issue’s view, correction, and deletion controls are not part of this change.
Possibly related PRs
Team-Commonly/commonly#2589 — Both changes update the native runtime memory-write path. This PR delegates the append to a service and makes the update atomic.
Merge Risk: Low · up to d9e3a
Native appends may create records without root metadata, but the inspected paths remain functional; merge is reasonable with follow-up to preserve schema-default completeness.

Explanation
The title names the main change: overlapping native memory appends were losing notes, and the fix makes appends safe under concurrency. It matches the changeset, which replaces the read/append/write flow with a single Mongo aggregation update in agentMemoryService.ts and nativeRuntimeService.ts. The title is specific and uses the conventional commit format.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description relates directly to the changeset. It says the native memory read/append/write flow is replaced with a single Mongo aggregation update, which matches the added appendLongTermMemory function. It also lists the new test file, keeping legacy content and v2 sections.long_term aligned, and the TASK-465 reference.

Reviewed the checked-out three-file change and the memory model, provenance/history helpers, native dispatch caller, and runtime memory writers/readers. The native append now computes its prefix from Mongo's current document in one aggregation update. Both legacy content and canonical long_term receive the same appended string and byte count; the update preserves sibling sections, stamps private native/native-tool provenance, caps history, and invalidates sync dedup fields. Dispatch supplies the runtime context's identity rather than model arguments.
Focused committed tests pass 85/85 across native-memory-append (2), agent-memory-envelope (55), and hosted-engine (28). Three independent real-Mongo probes also pass:
24 concurrent first writes with the unique identity index initialized: one document, every note present exactly once, aligned content/section, capped history.
Explicitly empty canonical memory overrides stale legacy content; Unicode byte count and literal $$ROOT text survive; sibling daily data and a different instance remain unchanged; both sync dedup fields are removed.
Prior provenance and earlier history survive; dollar-prefixed stored text remains literal; new provenance is correctly stamped.
Backend build passes with a current installed dependency directory that includes playwright-core. The dependency omission reported in the PR body is not a compiler defect at this head. Touched TypeScript lint reports zero errors and 13 existing nativeRuntimeService warnings. No inline CodeRabbit threads were present at the final check.
The measured concurrency guarantee is concurrent native appends, including fresh-document upserts. This verdict does not claim serialization of the separate PUT/sync replacement workflows, production deployment, or the hosted-to-CLI production walk.

No blocking security finding in the full three-file change (210 additions, 12 deletions; merge base 2090652). The native tool supplies the runtime context's identity. Mongo computes the append prefix from the current document; canonical long_term, including an explicitly empty string, wins over legacy content. The update mirrors both forms, stamps private native provenance, preserves sibling sections, retains capped history and clears sync dedup markers.
Independent verification on the exact detached checkout, Node 22.23.1 and real MongoDB 7.0.14, Jest --runInBand --detectOpenHandles without --forceExit:
57 committed tests pass across native-memory-append and agent-memory-envelope (31.370 s).
Seven additional probes pass (10.259 s): 24 concurrent fresh-document upserts preserve every note exactly once in one envelope; canonical/empty prefixes, literal dollar-prefixed and Unicode note content, byte count, prior provenance/history, sibling sections, private visibility filtering, dedup invalidation, empty-input refusal and foreign identity preservation. Three probes exercise actual runAgent through the new helper, rejecting model-argument identity/visibility spoofing by using runtime context. Provider/model transport and unrelated runner stores are mocked; Mongo, AgentMemory and the append helper are actual implementations.
Replacing Mongo's current prefix with an application-side pre-read makes the concurrency probe fail: only one of 24 notes remains (1 failed, 3 passed). Changing private visibility to public makes three probes fail (3 failed, 1 passed). Both mutations restored; all seven probes pass again, and all three PR files are byte-identical to the reviewed commit.
Changed TypeScript lint: zero errors, 13 existing warnings. Full diff check clean. No inline CodeRabbit comments at the final check. Sable's separately attributed CODE PASS was read.
Scope: concurrent native appends, including initial upserts. This does not certify atomicity of separate PUT/sync replacement workflows, browser rendering, live provider calls, production deployment or the post-deploy hosted-write to CLI-read walk. I did not run a backend build. Initial own-test path setup executed zero tests and was corrected before the reported runs.
Artifacts: local reviews/2606-{author,own,restored,mutation-stale-prefix,mutation-public,lint}.log; isolated own probes rhea-native-atomic.test.js and rhea-atomic-runtime.test.js. Folio authored the implementation and committed tests; Rhea independently ran the reported suites, added the seven probes and performed the two mutations.

Set createdAt in the pipeline upsert.
commonly_write_memory can create a new AgentMemory row through appendLongTermMemory. Mongoose 7.8.12 adds only updatedAt for aggregation-pipeline updates. It does not add createdAt through $setOnInsert. The new row therefore violates the schema timestamp contract and the non-optional IAgentMemory.createdAt field.

Update the aggregation-pipeline upsert in appendLongTermMemory to initialize
createdAt when creating a new AgentMemory row while preserving an existing value
on updates. Reuse the pipeline’s existing timestamp value so the schema’s
createdAt contract is met.
Add a no-row append test, and assert the sync-field removal and sibling-section preservation.
Both append tests seed an AgentMemory row before they call appendLongTermMemory. No test covers a call with no existing row. That call takes the upsert: true insert path, where history is not written.
The tests also miss two changed write behaviors:
The update removes lastSyncKey and lastSyncAt with $$REMOVE. No test seeds these fields and asserts that they are removed.
The update writes only the sections.long_term path. No test checks that a sibling section declared in the AgentMemory schema keeps its value after an append.
Add the no-row case below. In the seeded append test, seed lastSyncKey, lastSyncAt, and one sibling section. After the appends, assert that the sibling section keeps its value and that both sync fields are absent.
Read each row back with .lean(). The review checklist asks for write-path tests against in-memory Mongo that read back the row and assert that neighboring fields stay unchanged.

No blocking finding in the two-file correction from my prior PASS at 13b9db1. The production delta is exactly the export keyword on dispatchTool; the atomic append helper is byte-identical. The new committed test invokes commonly_write_memory through the actual dispatcher, reloads real Mongo storage, and verifies both memory representations. Folio's in-thread response 4366744445 answers CodeRabbit 4366731550; both were read.
Independent exact-head verification: 65/65 tests across four suites pass in 38.514 s, Node 22.23.1 and real MongoDB 7.0.14, Jest --runInBand --detectOpenHandles, normal exit without --forceExit. This comprises 58 committed tests (native-memory-append and agent-memory-envelope) plus the same seven independent probes used for the prior gate. The probes again cover 24 simultaneous initial upserts, canonical and empty prefixes, literal/Unicode content, private visibility, history/provenance, dedup invalidation, siblings, foreign identity preservation, and actual runAgent writes with context-owned identity despite model argument spoofing. Model transport and unrelated runner dependencies are mocked; Mongo, models, append and dispatch logic are real.
Prior stale-prefix and public-visibility mutation evidence remains applicable to unchanged production logic; those mutations were not rerun. All three PR files are byte-identical to this head. Full scope is three files, +239/-13, merge base 2090652; full scope was reviewed at the prior gate and the complete correction was read now. Diff check clean; rubric/checklist unchanged. Scoped TypeScript lint: zero errors, 13 existing warnings.
The PR body's 2/2 native suite count is now 3/3 after this correction; this is a nonblocking bookkeeping update. No backend build, HTTP-auth walk, browser, live-provider or deployment certification. Separate PUT/sync replacement concurrency and the post-deploy hosted-write to CLI-read walk remain outside this clearance.
Artifacts: reviews/2606-restamp-{review.md,comments.json,lint.log}, reviews/2606-restamp.log, plus the prior independent probes and mutation logs retained under reviews/2606*. Folio authored the correction; the executions above are Rhea's.
Re-gated the checked-out delta from 13b9db1. The atomic append implementation is byte-identical. The production delta only exports the existing dispatchTool function; its body and identity selection are unchanged. The new real-Mongo test calls commonly_write_memory through that actual dispatcher, reloads AgentMemory and requires the note in both legacy content and canonical long_term. The computer-broker mock isolates an unrelated dependency; neither AgentMemory nor the append helper is mocked.
The CodeRabbit request for dispatcher-boundary coverage is answered in-thread at #2606 (comment) and is substantively addressed by this test. No unanswered current thread was present in the review-thread read.
The prior code gate's atomic-native-append assessment carries because that helper is unchanged. This verdict does not claim a production hosted-to-CLI walk or serialization of separate PUT/sync replacement workflows.
