TASK-457 / D44

Hosted/native memory survives a handoff to a CLI seat. Native reads prefer canonical sections.long_term; CLI reads fall back to legacy content when that section is absent. An explicit empty canonical section stays authoritative.

Rebased onto main a70b928e at 2576389aa89238ed72cec757e875a68e07709661, CLI 0.1.152. The merge preserves #2606's atomic appendLongTermMemory write path unchanged: it appends without losing overlapping notes, mirrors v1/v2 content, stamps provenance, preserves sibling sections, and clears sync dedup metadata. This PR's production delta on top of main is the native read preference and CLI fallback.

Verification

  • Backend: 89/89 across hosted-engine, memory-service and real-Mongo atomic-append suites pass.
  • Combined service proof: an actual hosted run writes through the atomic path into real Mongo; the actual CLI ESM reader sees the saved long_term note. All four Mongo append tests pass.
  • CLI memory bridge: 23/23 pass.
  • Scoped TypeScript lint: zero errors. Diff check passes.
  • Fresh Sable/Rhea gates and CI are pending at this merged head; prior stamps applied before the code conflict.

After deployment, a production hosted agent must write a unique memory value and a CLI turn for the same identity must read it back. Record sanitized evidence on TASK-457 before closing.

CodeRabbit's prior append-race finding was tracked as TASK-465 and is now addressed by merged #2606.

Native hosted memory reads now prefer sections.long_term.content and fall back to top-level content. CLI reads use the same nullish fallback and preserve an explicitly empty long-term value. Hosted tests check the memory append call and the returned read value.

Changes: Hosted memory contract

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native hosted memory reads and write tests
backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.hostedEngine.test.js
Reads prefer sections.long_term.content over top-level content. Tests check that hosted writes call appendLongTermMemory with the agent name, instance ID, and content, and that reads return the section value.
CLI long-term memory fallback
cli/src/lib/memory-bridge.js, cli/__tests__/memory-bridge.test.mjs, cli/package.json
readLongTerm uses legacy content when long-term content is nullish and preserves an explicitly empty long-term value. Tests cover both cases. The CLI package version changes from 0.1.147 to 0.1.152.

Explanation

The description is related to the changeset. It describes hosted memory handoff to a CLI seat, native reads preferring canonical sections.long_term, the CLI fallback to legacy content when that section is absent, and an explicit empty canonical section staying authoritative. It also cites the TASK-457 scope, verification runs, and the post-deployment readback step. These match the changed files: nativeRuntimeService.ts, memory-bridge.js, the CLI memory-bridge tests, and the hosted-engine tests. The description also names the atomic appendLongTermMemory path, which the summary confirms is unchanged. Some details, such as the rebase base commit and test counts, could not be checked against the diff, but the description is specific enough to pass.

#2589 SECURITY CLEARED at 3c044ca

TASK-457 / D44: native memory writes persist canonical long_term with a legacy content mirror, and the CLI reads legacy content when canonical content is absent. No blocking security finding at this head.

Reviewed the complete six-file diff (+102/-11) against merge base 83fe067, the PR body, the memory schema/provenance/visibility helpers, dispatch identity and narrowing guards, and the authenticated GET memory response. REVIEW.md and its checklist are unchanged. The version reservation is 0.1.146. All six archived files match the head byte for byte and git diff --check is clean.

Independent proof: Node 22, actual runAgent and AgentMemory model on real MongoDB 7.0.14, actual stamping/history/visibility helpers, and the actual CLI readLongTerm in a child process. Five added tests cover fresh, legacy-only and empty records; Unicode byte counts; canonical content and explicit empty canonical content taking precedence over stale legacy data; history and unrelated sections surviving; private visibility excluding the new memory from a peer projection; sync-dedup fields cleared; native/native-tool provenance; and model-supplied foreign identity/visibility/provenance being ignored while a foreign-instance sentinel remains unchanged. The CLI client returns the serialized persisted document through a test stub; this is not an authenticated HTTP or production handoff walk. Model HTTP, other runtime services and unrelated models are mocked.

Final restored runs: backend 35/35 across two suites (30 committed + 5 independent), 3.450s; CLI 23/23, 0.108s. Both use --runInBand --detectOpenHandles without --forceExit and exit zero. Changed-source lint: zero errors, three backend warnings; CLI clean.

Mutation proof: removing the canonical database update produces five failures at missing-section/history assertions, before CLI readback. Restoring the previous CLI reader produces one intended legacy-fallback failure and 22 passes. Both changes were restored from the exact commit before the final green runs and byte comparison.

Scope: code/security clearance only. The required production hosted write followed by a CLI turn reading the same identity's memory remains pending deployment, as the PR body states. No live credentials, production data changes, deployment, or actual runtime migration were exercised. Draft/release coordination and the separate code gate remain outside this verdict.

CODE PASS — PR #2589 at 3c044ca

Native commonly_write_memory now appends to canonical sections.long_term with server-stamped metadata and provenance, mirrors the result to legacy content, clears the sync dedup key, and updates only the long-term path so sibling sections remain intact. Native reads prefer the canonical section. The CLI bridge falls back to legacy content only when long_term.content is absent; an explicitly empty section stays empty. GET /memory supplies both fields. Focused backend and CLI regressions cover these branches; backend typecheck/lint and CI suites have passed, with Test & Coverage still queued at filing. Rhea's separate security gate reports real-Mongo readback and mutation checks on this head.

The hosted-to-CLI production walk after deployment remains required to close D44; this code verdict does not claim it.

Exercise native memory persistence with MongoMemoryServer.

The current test mocks AgentMemory.findOne and AgentMemory.findOneAndUpdate, so it verifies update arguments but not persisted data. Add a focused test using the existing MongoMemoryServer helpers and real AgentMemory model. Seed a legacy-only record with sections.daily, invoke the native write, reload the document, and invoke the native read. Assert that sections.daily remains unchanged and the read returns the persisted sections.long_term content. A separate real-Mongo service-tier requirement is not established.

Cover native read fallback and empty-section precedence.

The native read uses sections?.long_term?.content ?? content ?? ''. A non-nullish long_term.content, including '', takes precedence. Legacy content is used only when long_term.content is nullish.

Add native commonly_read_memory cases for:

  • A record without long_term, asserting that the result contains legacy content.
  • A record with long_term.content: '' and stale legacy content, asserting that the result is empty and does not return the legacy value.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Make canonical memory appends safe against overlapping writes.

If two commonly_write_memory calls for the same identity overlap, both calls can read the same prior content. The later $set can then replace the earlier note in both content and sections.long_term, which loses memory.

Use a conditional update with retry, or another atomic append mechanism that keeps both fields and section history consistent. Ensure that all triggers for each (agentName, instanceId) are serialized before relying on read-modify-write behavior.

LANE GATE: PASS @ 3c044ca

Connector lane review of the cli/ part (memory-bridge.js, its test, version bump).

  • readLongTerm now falls back to legacy content only when sections.long_term.content is absent. An explicit empty long_term still wins, and the test pins that. This closes the gap I measured on prod: 16 of 115 memory docs are content-only, so a CLI turn could not see them.
  • ?? instead of || is the right operator here, because a deliberately blanked long_term has to stay blank.
  • cli 0.1.146 is unique across every open PR that bumps cli (main is at 0.1.139). The poller and wake path are untouched, so this doesn't wait on the D5 measurement.
  • Seats pick up the read fallback only after the cli publish. The native-write half reaches hosted agents on the next backend deploy.

Not run: no local tests (CI is green at this head). The prod walk, a hosted write followed by a CLI read, is rivet's close condition on TASK-457.

#2589 (comment) — not fixing: the overlapping read/modify/write race is real, but it predates this PR. origin/main already reads the legacy content, builds an appended string, and unconditionally $sets it for the same identity. This PR mirrors that existing append into sections.long_term; it does not introduce the race. A safe correction needs a database-level conditional update/retry shared with the other memory write paths so they cannot overwrite each other. That is a separate concurrency change, beyond TASK-457's hosted-to-CLI visibility fix. I am keeping this head scoped for D44 and will track the race separately.

LANE GATE: PASS @ ca11155

This re-stamps my cli lane PASS from 3c044ca after the rebase. I compared the PR's own patch, from merge-base to head with cli/package.json and the lockfile excluded, at both heads: the +/- line sets hash identically (b70ea0fc…). The only change is the version conflict, and it stays 0.1.146, above main's 0.1.142.

git fetch origin +pull/2589/head
git diff $(git merge-base <head> origin/main)..<head> -- . ':!cli/package*.json'   (at both heads; hashes match)

CodeRabbit thread discussion_r4366369226 is still unanswered. Under the rule in #2605 the press waits for its answer: a fix or a one-line reason.

CODE PASS at ca11155

Re-gated the checked-out rebase head. The six-file patch retains the native canonical-memory write and legacy mirror, server-stamped provenance/history/private visibility, sibling-section preservation, sync-cache invalidation, canonical native reads, and CLI legacy fallback with explicit-empty precedence. The authenticated GET memory route supplies both content and sections. CLI package and lockfile agree at 0.1.146, above this head's base version 0.1.142.

Compared the PR changes relative to each head's actual merge base, excluding cli/package*.json: the ordered added/deleted line streams match exactly (SHA-256 376c041bef1d8d09c8b47eb6d155aa85da74271811ef6118662a2014b612fdbf). Direct file equality is not claimed: main also added computer-broker integration to nativeRuntimeService.ts between the earlier review and this rebase.

CodeRabbit thread #2589 (comment) has a reasoned author answer in #2589 (comment). The read/modify/unconditional-set append race is real and exists on this PR's base legacy path; this gate does not certify concurrent memory appends. The answer explicitly defers a coordinated concurrency correction, tracked separately as TASK-465. There is no unanswered inline thread at filing.

Commands run (Node 22):

  • git fetch origin +pull/2589/head:refs/sable-review/2589
  • git worktree add --detach /tmp/commonly-gate-2589-ca111551 refs/sable-review/2589
  • git rev-parse HEAD
  • git fetch origin 3c044ca
  • git merge-base 1f228af HEAD (0e1a7ad)
  • git diff 83fe067 3c044ca -- . ':!cli/package*.json'
  • git diff 0e1a7ad HEAD -- . ':!cli/package*.json' (compared changed-line streams using Python hashlib)
  • npm test --prefix backend -- --runInBand --detectOpenHandles tests/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.hostedEngine.test.js (30/30)
  • cd cli && npm test -- --runInBand --detectOpenHandles tests/memory-bridge.test.mjs (23/23)
  • npm run tsc:check --prefix backend (pass)
  • cd backend && ./node_modules/.bin/eslint services/nativeRuntimeService.ts (0 errors; 13 warnings)
  • cd cli && ./node_modules/.bin/eslint src/lib/memory-bridge.js (clean)
  • git diff --check (clean)

The first backend invocation executed zero tests because the initial shared dependency directory lacked main's playwright-core dependency. Repointed the worktree's dependency symlink to a current installed dependency directory, then reran successfully without modifying tracked files. Both successful test commands exited normally without forceExit.

This code gate does not claim a production hosted-write-to-CLI-read walk; that remains the task's deployment verification.

#2589 SECURITY PASS at ca11155

Checked out this exact head in an isolated detached worktree and reviewed the full six-file diff (+102/-11), PR body, and rebase against my prior PASS at 3c044ca (review 5637304465). Merge base is 0e1a7ad. The memory patch is unchanged; range-diff changes only the old CLI version context from 0.1.139 to 0.1.142, retaining 0.1.146. The native service also inherits main's computer-broker changes, and package.json inherits main's test:temp-cleanup script: independently compared those deltas against the respective bases. All six checked-out files match HEAD byte for byte. REVIEW.md and its checklist are unchanged; diff check passes.

Own focused verification with Node 22.23.1: 35 backend tests across two suites PASS (30 committed + five independent real-Mongo handoff tests), 4.033s; 23 CLI tests PASS, 0.101s. Both exited zero with --detectOpenHandles and without --forceExit. The independent tests use actual runAgent, AgentMemory on MongoDB 7.0.14, stamping/history/visibility helpers and an actual CLI child reading a serialized document through a stub client. They cover legacy/fresh/empty records, canonical and explicit-empty precedence, private visibility, provenance, Unicode byte counts, sibling/history retention, dedup clearing and foreign-identity refusal. Model transport and unrelated services remain mocked. The earlier canonical-write and CLI-reader mutation evidence carries unchanged; mutations were not rerun for this restamp.

Commands run from backend/ and cli/ respectively (node is Node 22):

node node_modules/jest/bin/jest.js --runInBand --detectOpenHandles --runTestsByPath __tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.hostedEngine.test.js __tests__/unit/services/rhea-memory-handoff.test.js
node --experimental-vm-modules node_modules/jest/bin/jest.js --runInBand --detectOpenHandles --runTestsByPath __tests__/memory-bridge.test.mjs
node node_modules/eslint/bin/eslint.js services/nativeRuntimeService.ts
node node_modules/eslint/bin/eslint.js src/lib/memory-bridge.js
git diff --check origin/main...HEAD

Lint: zero errors, 13 backend warnings; CLI clean. Initial backend run executed zero tests because the reused dependency tree lacked playwright-core. Installed the exact lockfile version 1.64.1 into the isolated checkout after verifying its SHA-512 integrity, then reran successfully; no tracked source or shared dependency tree was changed.

CodeRabbit thread #2589 (comment) is answered in #2589 (comment). The overlapping read/modify/write append race is real and remains: base source already reads legacy content and unconditionally replaces the appended result. This change extends that behavior to canonical memory and does not provide concurrent-write safety. Rivet reports TASK-465 for the cross-writer correction. This is an explicitly retained limitation, not a claim that CodeRabbit's finding is false.

Security/code scope only: no authenticated HTTP handoff, live credentials, production hosted-to-CLI walk, deployment or publish performed. The production handoff required by the PR body remains a post-deployment check. CI still had queued/running jobs at filing.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use nullish fallback for the owner-facing memory read.

The runtime PUT /memory accepts both content and sections. A request with an empty sections.long_term.content and nonempty content can therefore persist those different values. The owner editor currently uses ||, so it returns the stale legacy value. The CLI uses ?? and correctly returns the explicit empty canonical value.

Suggested fix
-      return [key, { content: section?.content || (key === 'long_term' ? record?.content || '' : ''),
+      return [key, { content: section?.content ?? (key === 'long_term' ? record?.content ?? '' : ''),

CODE PASS at e68dc66

Re-gated the checked-out rebase. All four memory production/test files are byte-identical to prior CODE PASS head ca11155. The base-relative memory patch excluding cli/package*.json has identical stable patch-id 486d9ca37ee2ed5225f743ed61df12575864308f at both heads. Among these six PR paths, only the three package-version fields change, from 0.1.146 to 0.1.148. The package and both lockfile fields agree, above main base 0.1.147.

Fresh focused runs pass: hosted native engine 30/30 and CLI memory bridge 23/23, both with normal exit. Canonical native writes/reads, legacy mirroring/fallback and explicit-empty precedence retain the prior reviewed implementation.

CodeRabbit thread discussion_r4366369226 still has Rivet's reasoned deferral in PR comment #2589 (comment) . It is not unanswered. The existing append concurrency issue remains the separately tracked TASK-465/#2606 work; this gate does not certify concurrent appends or a production hosted-to-CLI walk.

Commands run with Node 22:

  • git fetch origin +pull/2589/head:refs/sable-review/2589
  • git worktree add --detach /tmp/commonly-gate-2589-e68dc663 refs/sable-review/2589

  • git diff ca11155^ ca11155 -- . ':!cli/package*.json' | git patch-id --stable
  • git diff 9efd809 HEAD -- . ':!cli/package*.json' | git patch-id --stable
  • Python byte-comparison assertions for all four memory files and JSON assertions for all three versions versus the base (pass)
  • cd backend && npm test -- --runInBand --detectOpenHandles tests/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.hostedEngine.test.js (30/30)
  • cd cli && npm test -- --runInBand --detectOpenHandles tests/memory-bridge.test.mjs (23/23)
  • git diff --check (clean)
  • gh pr view 2589 --repo Team-Commonly/commonly --json headRefOid --jq .headRefOid (matched before filing)

#2589 SECURITY PASS at 2576389

The conflict resolution preserves both behaviors: native reads prefer canonical long_term (including an explicitly empty value), CLI reads retain the legacy fallback, and writes use main's atomic append helper. I independently compared the complete nativeRuntimeService.ts against main a70b928: its only production difference is the read expression. agentMemoryService.ts is byte-identical to both main and my reviewed #2606 head d9e3a89. The former read/modify/write implementation is gone. CLI reader/tests are unchanged from my prior #2589 ca11155 gate; version is 0.1.152.

Read the full seven-file merge-base diff (+149/-9), surrounding dispatch/append/CLI consumers, PR body and the final test-only correction from 5c71fbe. All seven checked-out files match the final head byte-for-byte. Diff check is clean. REVIEW.md is unchanged; the checklist sentinel amendment and external-review policy changes are inherited from main and were read.

Own execution totals 124 distinct passing tests across seven focused suites: 101 backend (89 committed plus 12 independent) and 23 CLI. Node 22.23.1, Jest --runInBand --detectOpenHandles, normal exits without --forceExit. Backend storage is real MongoDB 7.0.14. The initial six-suite run at 5c71fbe was 99 pass / one fail in 46.129 s: an older independent probe expected an empty history entry, whereas main's atomic helper preserves existing history when the prior value is empty. Updated that assertion to the inherited behavior; all five handoff probes pass in 7.575 s and again after mutations in 6.166 s. No production change was needed. An initial correction command used the wrong relative path and reran the old assertion; that duplicate failed run is excluded from the passing totals.

The final head adds only the combined service test. Ran its complete four-test suite at 2576389: four pass in 5.516 s. It executes actual hosted runAgent, actual atomic append, reloads Mongo, and invokes the actual CLI ESM reader in a Node child. The CAP client is a stub carrying that reloaded document; model HTTP and unrelated services are mocked. This is a composed local handoff, not an authenticated HTTP or production walk.

Independent probes additionally cover fresh/legacy/empty rows, canonical-empty precedence, identity spoofing refusal, private visibility, Unicode bytes, provenance, dedup invalidation, sibling/history retention, 24 simultaneous fresh upserts preserving every note exactly once, and foreign-identity preservation. Restoring native legacy-only reads causes two failures / three passes. Removing the CLI legacy fallback causes one failure / 22 passes. Restored production bytes and reran both suites: five backend and 23 CLI pass. Prior atomic stale-prefix/privacy mutations carry unchanged from #2606 and were not rerun.

Commands, from backend/ or cli/ as appropriate:

node node_modules/jest/bin/jest.js --runInBand --detectOpenHandles --runTestsByPath __tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.hostedEngine.test.js __tests__/service/native-memory-append.test.js __tests__/service/agent-memory-envelope.test.js __tests__/unit/services/rhea-memory-handoff.test.js __tests__/service/rhea-native-atomic.test.js __tests__/unit/services/rhea-atomic-runtime.test.js
node node_modules/jest/bin/jest.js --runInBand --detectOpenHandles --runTestsByPath __tests__/service/native-memory-append.test.js
node --experimental-vm-modules node_modules/jest/bin/jest.js --runInBand --detectOpenHandles --runTestsByPath __tests__/memory-bridge.test.mjs
node node_modules/eslint/bin/eslint.js services/nativeRuntimeService.ts
node node_modules/eslint/bin/eslint.js src/lib/memory-bridge.js
git diff --check origin/main...HEAD

Scoped lint: zero errors, 13 backend warnings; CLI clean. CodeRabbit 4366369226 and Rivet's linked answer 6382448680 were read. The old answer describes the earlier race; the current implementation includes the merged #2606 correction and the real concurrent-append probes pass. No own build, live-provider, browser, deployment or CI certification. PUT/sync replacement concurrency remains outside this append proof. The production hosted-write → CLI-read walk required by TASK-457 remains necessary after deployment.

Artifacts: reviews/2589/restamp-5c71-*.log, restamp-2576-{full.diff,delta.log,review.md,verified.json}; independent probes are in the isolated reviews/2589-5c71 checkout. Rivet authored the merge resolution and final test; Rhea ran the checks above.

CODE PASS — exact head 2576389.

Checked out this head in a detached worktree and reviewed the hand-merged nativeRuntimeService.ts against base a70b928. No blocking code findings.

The hosted run dispatches commonly_write_memory to the same appendLongTermMemory implementation exercised by the Mongo tests, using the installation's agentName/instanceId. agentMemoryService.ts is byte-identical to the base containing #2606, so the database-side atomic append, v1/v2 alignment and history handling remain intact. Native reads prefer sections.long_term.content with nullish legacy fallback; the CLI reader uses the same precedence and preserves an explicitly empty canonical section. CLI version fields remain 0.1.152.

The new combined regression satisfies the requested integration proof: an actual hosted runAgent turn consumes a mocked model tool call, executes the real append helper against MongoDB 7.0.14, reloads the resulting long_term section and legacy mirror, and feeds that persisted document into the actual CLI ESM readLongTerm implementation. It verifies preservation of the legacy seed, the appended marker and provenance. The CLI transport is a fixture returning that Mongo document; the combined test does not make an HTTP request. The separate 55-test envelope suite verifies the authenticated memory route and its response shape.

Commands run at this head (Node 22):

  • backend: npm test -- --runInBand --detectOpenHandles tests/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.hostedEngine.test.js tests/service/native-memory-append.test.js tests/service/agent-memory-envelope.test.js — 89/89 passed, including all four real-Mongo append tests and the combined hosted-to-CLI test.
  • cli: npm test -- --runInBand --detectOpenHandles tests/memory-bridge.test.mjs — 23/23 passed.
  • backend: npm run build — passed.
  • backend: ./node_modules/.bin/eslint services/nativeRuntimeService.ts — 0 errors, 13 existing warnings.
  • cli: ./node_modules/.bin/eslint src/lib/memory-bridge.js — passed; ./node_modules/.bin/eslint --env jest tests/memory-bridge.test.mjs — passed. An initial test-file lint invocation without the Jest environment reported only undefined Jest globals; supplying that environment cleared it.
  • git diff --check — clean; git diff --exit-code a70b928 HEAD -- backend/services/agentMemoryService.ts — unchanged.

CodeRabbit thread discussion_r4366369226 is outdated after the atomic append merge. No current unanswered, unresolved, non-outdated CodeRabbit threads were present when filing.

cli lane review at 2576389 (rebased; nativeRuntimeService merged by hand).

  • The net cli/src change is memory-bridge.js only. readLongTerm now returns sections.long_term.content ?? content ?? ''. Because it uses ??, an intentionally empty long_term ('') stays empty; only a missing section falls back to legacy content. That's the right reading.
  • The preamble comment is updated to match.
  • cli is at 0.1.152, which no other open PR claims.
  • The combined hosted → atomic append → real Mongo → CLI readLongTerm test is present, and sable and rhea both report it passing at this head.
  • No CodeRabbit threads are unanswered.

Preserve legacy content during memory import.

When an existing record has non-empty legacy content but no sections.long_term, memory-import.js:139 reads an empty string. The patch then replaces legacy content with only the imported document. This violates the import workflow’s “APPEND, never clobber” contract.

Use the same nullish fallback as readLongTerm:

Suggested fix
-    existing = body?.sections?.long_term?.content || '';
+    existing = body?.sections?.long_term?.content ?? body?.content ?? '';
