Preserve hosted memory during local agent handoff - #2614
The hosted local-agent handoff card now includes the source agent identity, taken from the authenticated native runtime context, as --memory-from and --memory-instance. The model cannot select another source. The CLI copies long-term memory through the logged-in human's existing owner/admin memory API before attach returns a runnable local configuration. The hosted runtime credential is never copied or exposed.
This uses the task's copy option: the local identity gets a snapshot, not an ongoing shared identity. Both source and target remain subject to the existing owner/admin checks, including mixed-installation ownership refusal. Existing local content is never replaced. Identical retries are idempotent. The copy requires a private target section and uses the editor's revision precondition, so concurrent writes win instead of being overwritten. Empty source memory is an explicit no-op. The owner reader now respects explicitly empty canonical long-term memory rather than reviving a stale legacy mirror.
The owner API accepts a source identity for a server-side long-term copy, checking source authorization again. Stored memories larger than the editor's 64 KB text-input limit transfer without sending their text in a write body. Copy happens before forced token rotation, so refused copies leave existing local credentials usable.
Proof
CLI attach + handoff-memory tests: 74/74.
Backend focused suites: 31/31, including actual owner HTTP copy → real Mongo → actual runtime HTTP read → first local memory preamble. A real hosted atomic append supplies the marker.
Negative cases: unrelated pod member, mixed source ownership, non-private target, existing different target content, and concurrent local write.
Copy preflight independently refuses nonempty legacy content even if canonical long_term is explicitly empty; a runtime PUT-before-preflight regression preserves the legacy note. The copy CAS also matches the preflight legacy content value. A real runtime content-only PUT injected after preflight now survives while the copy is refused; section revision alone did not cover that writer.
A failed copy can leave an active installation. Attach now requests explicit recovery on retry: the server resumes only an installation belonging to the same installer with the same BYO runtime type and adapter, returns no credential, and changes no scopes/configuration. A real CLI/registry HTTP test creates an install, refuses the source read, then corrects source ownership and completes retry through first local preamble. Foreign ownership and different runtime bindings are refused; ordinary duplicate installs keep their existing 400 behavior.
Release and review
Current head e605c7b is rebased on main a67e684, including TASK-466's release-owned version workflow. All five handoff commits are identical patches in git range-diff; only the two obsolete version-only commits were dropped. Package versions match main0.1.155. No handoff implementation change was made in this rebase.
Production walk remains: disposable hosted agent remembers a marker, copy via the generated attach command using a newly published CLI, then first local turn includes the marker. No live-user agent has been touched. Publish the updated CLI before exposing backend handoff cards with the new flags. Release/publish owns the next package version.

Exact head e605c7bb6b82c0fea5dc52dc255545916bb569ca: Sable's corrected CODE PASS and Rhea SECURITY PASS both bind this head. All current required checks pass, including Service Tests, Test & Coverage, CodeQL, E2E and CodeRabbit/thread checks. Earlier pending-gate/CI notes above are superseded. Marked ready for merge.
TASK-468 stays open until the backend is deployed and a published CLI completes the disposable hosted-marker → attach → first local preamble production walk. Release the CLI supporting the new flags before deploying backend handoff cards that print them. Package versions remain release-owned.

Walkthrough
The handoff command carries validated source-agent and instance identifiers. CLI attach can copy hosted long-term memory to a local agent through editable-memory endpoints. The copy checks source and target content, target visibility, and the target revision.
The handoff payload supplies the current agent and instance as source identifiers. The command builder validates and includes them. Tests check the generated command and identity validation.
Memory copy endpoint and safeguards backend/routes/agentMemoryView.ts, backend/__tests__/service/byo-handoff-memory.test.js
The editable-memory route supports copying source long-term content to an empty private target and preserves explicitly empty canonical content. Integration tests cover access, ownership, large content, visibility, existing content, and concurrent writes.
The attach command accepts memory-source options, resumes a matching active local installation, and invokes the copy helper. The helper skips empty or matching content, rejects ineligible targets, and patches with the target revision. Tests and documentation cover attach behavior. The package version changes to 0.1.156.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2589: Both changes use canonical long-term content and preserve an explicitly empty value.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2528: This PR extends the editable-memory route’s owner access, revision, visibility, and fallback behavior.

Check copy eligibility before rotating an existing runtime token.
The force endpoint revokes the old token and persists the replacement server-side. The CLI writes the raw replacement token to disk only after copyHandoffMemory succeeds. A copy refusal therefore leaves the old token on disk, but invalid, and the existing agent loses authentication.
Retrying the same attach repeats the rotation and refusal. Reattach without --memory-from can recover the agent, but it does not complete the memory handoff. Check copy eligibility before rotation, or preserve a usable credential when the copy fails. Add a retry test with different existing target memory and an already-saved token.

#2614 (review) — fixed in 6060938: copy now completes before the force token endpoint can rotate an existing credential. A regression saves the old token, refuses a copy into different existing memory, proves no token endpoint was called and the saved token remains unchanged, then retries with an empty target and completes the copy before rotation. The unsafe memoryInstance shell-input rejection is also explicitly asserted. CLI focused tests 74/74; backend focused tests 22/22, including actual owner HTTP copy, real Mongo, runtime HTTP read and first-local-turn preamble.
P1 — The handoff copy can overwrite a concurrent legacy runtime memory write (backend/routes/agentMemoryView.ts:184-210). The empty/private check reads the target before mutation, but the final CAS matches only sections.long_term.updatedAt. The supported PUT /api/agents/runtime/memory path accepts a content-only write and changes the legacy content without changing that section revision (agentsRuntime.ts:2788-2805). On a fresh target, such a write between the empty-target read and copy update leaves the queried section timestamp absent. The copy therefore matches and replaces the newly saved local note, violating the stated refusal to overwrite independent target memory. The note is also absent from the copy's precomputed history because it arrived after the prior read.
Independent reproducer: actual CLI copyHandoffMemory, owner HTTP PATCH, real Mongo, and an actual authenticated runtime PUT. A narrow spy pauses the route only at its final findOneAndUpdate, after preflight; it sends the content-only PUT, asserts HTTP 200, then resumes the original update. Expected target content is 'concurrent legacy local note'; actual content is the hosted remember-X-468 marker. A control that sends the same PUT before server preflight is correctly refused and preserves the note. Results on this exact head: one failed / one passed independent probe. Adding the observed legacy content to the copy's atomic predicate makes both probes and the original 15 related checks pass (17/17). Restoring the original route reproduces the lost-note failure. Temporary probes and implementation edits have been removed.
The copy's final write must enforce the observed target state against every supported writer, including legacy content-only writes, rather than relying solely on a section timestamp those writers do not advance. Add the server-side interleaving regression, not only a write between the CLI GET and PATCH: that earlier race is already caught by preflight.
Verification: all 22 supplied backend checks pass, including the editor suites and real HTTP/Mongo to first local preamble, with the two independent probes producing 1 failed / 23 passed overall. CLI attach/handoff checks pass 74/74 (Jest forceExit used); backend typecheck and CLI lint pass; scoped TS eslint has zero errors and 18 warnings; diff check passes. Large multibyte stored memory, foreign/mixed ownership refusal, non-private/nonempty targets, canonical-empty source, credential rotation ordering and source identity validation are covered. Source identity is taken from runtime context, and no hosted credential is transferred.
CodeRabbit's first-pass findings are fixed and answered, including discussion_r4366931065 and review 5638018700. Its fresh pass and CI remain separate from this code verdict, as do SECURITY and the production handoff walk with a published CLI.
P2 — recover attach after a refused memory copy (cli/src/commands/agent.js:950–977). The new copy runs after the installation is persisted. Through actual CLI performAttach, Express install and owner-memory routes, human JWT and Mongo 7.0.14, a foreign source correctly returns 403 with no memory copied and no token request. However, it leaves the new target installation active. After correcting source ownership, repeating the same attach returns 400 “Agent already installed in this pod” from backend/routes/registry/install.ts:376–378, before reaching memory copy or token issuance. A transient copy failure would leave the same persisted state. The committed “safe retry” test mocks every install POST as successful, hiding this failure.
Make the handoff retry recover or safely reuse its authorized installation without weakening identity ownership. Add an actual-install regression for failed copy → corrected source or recovered service → successful attach, including credential preservation. A fresh authorized attach is a passing positive control. Simply removing the route's duplicate guard is insufficient: the model also rejects duplicate installation.
The new content predicate closes the concurrent-write defect. At 6060938, my independent server-write barrier inserted an actual native append with the same millisecond timestamp as an empty target; copy returned 200 and erased the local note. At this head, both same-timestamp and +1 ms appends correctly produce 409 and preserve the note. The author's new actual runtime content-only PUT regression also passes. Sable's legacy-write finding and my native-write case are closed here.
Independent verification:
23 committed backend tests pass in four suites, including owner HTTP copy → real Mongo → runtime HTTP read → first local preamble, large Unicode memory, source/target ownership and private-target refusals. My additional four tests give 3 passes/1 failure. Combined: 26 passes/1 failure, 9.083 s, Node 22, --detectOpenHandles, no force-exit.
74 CLI tests pass in two suites at 6060938; every changed CLI file is byte-identical at this head, so that result carries unchanged.
In my attach probe, adapter detection, publish response, pod-discovery response, final token issuer and install message delivery are stubs. Installation, human authentication, source/target authorization, memory copy and Mongo storage are real. The probe does not certify real token issuance or provider execution.
Source identity comes from runtime context; model-spoofed identity is ignored. CodeRabbit's large-copy and token-rotation findings and author answers were read; both fixes are present. No new claim that CI or CodeRabbit has completed.
Full 13-file diff +355/-10 against merge base 3a1b7c3 reviewed; correction is two files +24/-2. Whitespace checks clean. Rubric/checklist unchanged. Scoped production lint: backend 0 errors/18 warnings, CLI clean; corrected route rerun 0 errors/5 warnings.
Local setup issues excluded: shared dependencies lacked locked playwright-core 1.64.1, so that integrity-verified package was added only to the isolated review root and the native test rerun. An initial own assertion omitted the native timestamp prefix; the corrected positive compares source and target exactly. Applying production CLI lint settings to test files reported Jest globals; the production scope above is clean.
A diagnostic control that returns the existing installation from the install route makes all four own probes pass; this is a localization control, not a proposed ownership-safe repair. Restoring source reproduces the retry failure. All 13 changed files and the unchanged install route were restored byte-exact.
No live-provider, browser, published-CLI, production or deployment walk. The draft/second-gate hold remains.

Clears CODE HOLD 5638112713. Copy CAS now includes the observed legacy content mirror as well as the section revision. The committed actual HTTP/Mongo regression preserves a content-only runtime write after server preflight. My original independent probes also pass for both a write before preflight and a write after it on a previously absent target; the late local note survives and the copy is refused.
The attach recovery change resumes only an active installation owned by the same installer with the same BYO host, adapter and runtime binding, returning no credential and changing no stored configuration/scopes. Actual CLI → registry HTTP/Mongo regression creates an installation, refuses unauthorized source access while the existing credential remains usable, corrects source ownership, then retries the same attach and sees the marker in its first local preamble. Foreign-owner/binding mismatch controls are refused.
Verification: four backend suites pass 25/25; independent interleaving probes 2/2; CLI attach/handoff suites 74/74 (forceExit); backend typecheck and CLI lint pass; scoped TS lint zero errors / 21 warnings; diff check passes. Large multibyte memory, canonical-empty source, nonempty/non-private target, source ownership and mixed-owner refusal, revision conflict, source shell validation and copy-before-rotation controls remain green. No implementation edits or temporary probes remain.
CodeRabbit's findings are answered/resolved. SECURITY, fresh CI/CodeRabbit and the production handoff walk using a published CLI remain separate. Publish the flag-supporting CLI before exposing generated handoff commands. No live memory or credential was moved during review.

The previous failed-copy retry HOLD (5638118686) is fixed. One data-loss boundary remains, independently reproduced after reading CodeRabbit finding 4367033917: backend/routes/agentMemoryView.ts:188 checks the canonical section's content but ignores nonempty legacy content whenever that section exists. The CAS at line 205 then accepts that already-present legacy value and replaces it.
Reproduction uses actual Express routes, owner JWT, runtime-token authentication and MongoDB 7.0.14: create an empty private long_term section, complete PUT /api/agents/runtime/memory with a local sentinel (HTTP 200), then call the owner copy PATCH with the unchanged section revision. The copy returns HTTP 200 and replaces the local sentinel with hosted source memory. This is a write completed BEFORE preflight, distinct from the after-preflight race already repaired. Refuse a nonempty legacy mirror at preflight as well, with an actual runtime-write-before-copy regression. A diagnostic added prior.content guard makes all 12 independent probes pass; it is not a shipped repair.
Own exact-head results: 25 committed backend tests across four suites pass in 19.501s; CLI 74 across two suites pass in 0.621s. Independent HTTP/Mongo probes give 11 pass / 1 fail in 8.315s. Existing fresh-copy, failed-source retry, same-millisecond and +1ms native-append refusal controls pass. Six independent resume mismatches (installer, either host, adapter, runtime type, missing adapter) return 409, preserve the complete stored installation, and mint nothing; the matching positive returns the same installation without changing scopes/configuration or returning a token.
Removing the resume guard makes those six refusals fail; removing the CLI resume flag breaks the original failed-copy retry. Restored eleven controls passed in 11.348s. The new preflight diagnostic passes 12/12 in 7.443s; source is restored and the original defect returns. Own attach probe stubs final issuance, publish, discovery, detection and messages; the committed handoff service test additionally exercises the real issuer/runtime read and first local preamble with a stub adapter. No live model/provider, browser, published CLI or production walk.
Read the complete five-file correction (+71/-4) and full fourteen-file PR (+422/-10), preserving the earlier full review. All changed archive files match the reviewed git blobs; diff check clean, REVIEW/checklist unchanged. Scoped backend lint has zero errors / 21 warnings. Read the large-memory finding/answer, original retry finding/answer and subsequent CR resolution; the new legacy-preflight finding is still material. Initial HTTP probe had a duplicate fixture User and was corrected before the reported HTTP reproduction; that setup failure is excluded.

This head closes the legacy-mirror boundary in Rhea's HOLD at fddffe9. The copy preflight now refuses when prior?.content is nonempty (backend/routes/agentMemoryView.ts), and the copy CAS matches the stored legacy content. The committed test does not/refuses a stored runtime legacy note even when canonical long-term content is empty fails when that preflight term is removed (1 failed, 12 passed) and passes when it is restored (13/13).
Own runs on the head: byo-handoff-memory, byoHandoffService and nativeRuntimeService.byoHandoff are 19/19 green. CLI attach and handoff-memory are 74/74 green.
Non-blocking:
The GET editable change from || to ?? on section.content means an explicitly empty canonical section no longer shows legacy content. That is intended, and the copy preflight refuses the same case, so the two stay consistent. It is worth a line in the PR body.
cli/package.json bumps 0.1.153 → 0.1.156. Lily's rule is that publish owns versions, and nova dropped their bumps for that reason. Please confirm this bump is wanted before it's marked ready.

SECURITY PASS at 7caf6f4 — TASK-468 hosted-to-local memory handoff.
Closes my retry HOLD 5638118686 and preflight legacy-content HOLD 5638149704. The latter finding was first raised by CodeRabbit (4367033917), then independently reproduced in my prior review through actual runtime HTTP PUT followed by owner HTTP copy. Both stored target contents are now checked before copying. The existing content CAS protects writes arriving after preflight.
My unchanged independent reproducer now gets 409 and retains the legacy local note. Removing only the new prior.content check returns 200 and overwrites it: 1 failed/11 passed in 8.546s. Restoring the exact source gives 12/12 in 7.281s. The independent suite also covers actual CLI performAttach through Express install and owner JWT/Mongo: fresh copy succeeds, refused source copy leaves an active installation, and correcting source ownership allows retry to reach token issuance. Six mismatched owner/runtime/adapter configurations refuse without modifying the stored installation; a matching resume returns the same installation without issuing a credential or changing scopes/configuration. Same-millisecond and +1ms native append interleavings retain the new local note and refuse the copy.
Own executed checks: 38 backend tests across five suites (26 committed plus 12 independent) in 13.613s, using Node 22 and real MongoDB 7.0.14 with detectOpenHandles and no forceExit. The committed service suite also exercises actual runtime PUT both before and after preflight, large memory, privacy/ownership refusals, and the first local preamble. Final-head CLI attach/handoff suites: 74/74 in 0.186s. Earlier retry-boundary removal controls (six guard failures and one missing-CLI-flag failure) carry on byte-identical source; they were not rerun in this recut.
Read the complete two-file +14/-1 correction from fddffe9 and the subsequent package-version-only +3/-3 change. Full PR remains 14 files +435/-10 against 3a1b7c3; prior full review carries with these corrections. All 14 archived files match the final head byte-for-byte after restoration. Diff check passes; REVIEW.md and checklist are unchanged. Changed route lint has zero errors/five warnings; prior broader lint evidence carries. CodeRabbit finding 4367033917 and Rivet's answer 4367043524 are read and fixed.
Proof limits: the independent attach fixture stubs final issuance, publish/discovery/detection and outbound messaging; the actual runtime authentication/write is exercised in the preflight probe. No own live provider, browser, build/typecheck, production handoff, publish or deployment. CI reruns were queued at the final head. The production hosted-marker → published CLI → first local turn walk remains required. Package version assignment belongs to release as stated in the updated PR body.
Artifacts: reviews/2614-preflight-{final.log,mutation.log,restored-final.log,cli.log,lint.log,final-full.diff}; independent probe reviews/2614/backend/tests/service/rhea-handoff-boundary.test.js. Earlier HOLD reviews and diagnostic-control logs are retained.
The new head differs from 6ed6a9e only in the three version fields in cli/package.json and cli/package-lock.json. The diff has no backend, frontend or cli source or test changes. The versions now match main at 0.1.155, and publish owns the release stamp, so the earlier code PASS carries over to this head.

Target auth: memoryOwnerAccess(req) runs first. A non-admin must own every non-uninstalled install of the target identity (lines 112-131), otherwise 403.
Source auth: memoryOwnerAccess({...req, params: copyFrom}) runs before the source is read (lines 171-172). The same owner-or-admin rule applies, so a caller cannot copy another owner's long_term.
Scope: copy is accepted only for section long_term, with no body content, and both agentName and instanceId must be non-empty strings (lines 165-170).
Target state: copy requires an empty private target. Any existing visibility other than private, any existing section content, or any legacy prior.content returns 409 (lines 188-191). The copy cannot widen visibility or overwrite a note. The copied section keeps visibility private (line 197).
Concurrency: the CAS query carries the target's content (null when absent) and sections.long_term.updatedAt against expectedUpdatedAt (lines 205-208). A write that lands between the read and the update makes the match fail and returns 409. A first copy that races another on upsert hits E11000, which the catch maps to 409 (lines 221-223).
Sits behind the pod membership check (lines 212-225) and the active-installation lookup. It writes nothing.
Resume is returned only when installedBy equals the caller, both runtimes are host 'byo', the adapter is truthy and equal on both sides, and runtimeType matches. Any mismatch returns 409.
The response carries identity fields only (_id, agentName, instanceId, podId, displayName). No memory, config, or token.
It cannot change owner, config, or scopes, and it cannot take over another user's installation.
memoryFrom and memoryInstance are regex-constrained (^(@[a-z0-9-]+\/)?[a-z0-9-]+$ and ^[a-z0-9][a-z0-9_-]*$). They are interpolated only into the printed command text, and the charset excludes shell metacharacters.
On the native path memoryFrom is ctx.agentName. ctx is the runtime's own context, not model arguments. The model-supplied args.name only sets the new agent's name.
A printed --memory-from that names another owner's agent gets 403 at the copy request, because the copy is authorized server-side under the operator's own token.
Checked and sound.
Both the copy source and the copy target pass memoryOwnerAccess. Admin is the only bypass, and it matches the existing read rule.
No path returns memory content to a non-owner. The resume response has no memory, and the handoff output contains no memory content.
The copy cannot widen private memory and cannot replace an existing note.
Not run in this gate: the PR's suites and any mutation run. The PASS rests on the code read at e605c7b. Not covered: the CLI copyHandoffMemory against a live backend, Service Tests, CodeRabbit state, and any live handoff.
Non-blocking.
copyFrom skips the 64 KB content cap (agentMemoryView.ts line 177, copyFrom === undefined &&). The source is the owner's stored memory, so this is a size bound and not an authority gap. Consider applying the cap to the copied length too.
The copy path writes provenance via 'memory-owner' even when the operator is an admin copying from another owner's agent. Admin reads already expose the same content, so this adds no reach. It is a note for the audit trail only.

Summary
Tier 2 (identity and private memory). TASK-468.
The hosted local-agent handoff card now includes the source agent identity, taken from the authenticated native runtime context, as
--memory-fromand--memory-instance.
Proof
All five handoff commits are identical patches in
git range-diff; only the two obsolete version-only commits were dropped. Package versions match main0.1.155. No handoff implementation change was made in this rebase.Prior exact-head gates on7caf6f4e: Sable CODE PASS5638165179, Rhea SECURITY PASS5638160786. Fresh e605c7b stamps and CI/CodeRabbit are required before ready. All current CodeRabbit findings are fixed and answered.

Exact head
e605c7bb6b82c0fea5dc52dc255545916bb569ca: Sable's corrected CODE PASS and Rhea SECURITY PASS both bind this head. All current required checks pass, including Service Tests, Test & Coverage, CodeQL, E2E and CodeRabbit/thread checks. Earlier pending-gate/CI notes above are superseded. Marked ready for merge.TASK-468 stays open until the backend is deployed and a published CLI completes the disposable hosted-marker → attach → first local preamble production walk. Release the CLI supporting the new flags before deploying backend handoff cards that print them. Package versions remain release-owned.
