fix(agents): suggest an unused local handoff name - #2735
TASK-541: before posting a default BYO handoff card, check global AgentRegistry names, including the owner's existing agents, other publishers, and retained uninstalled names. Use the original default when free, otherwise try -2, -3, etc. The selected name is used in every OS attach and run command. Explicit names are unchanged.
Lookups use the registry agentName index and stop after 100 candidates. Lookup failure or exhaustion refuses the offer rather than posting a known occupied name. Suffixes preserve the 40-character limit.
Boundary
This is a suggestion at card creation time, not a reservation. A concurrent registration after the card is posted can still take that name. Install continues to enforce ownership and memory refusal; this change creates no registry rows, installs, or memory. This fixes the returning-user default collision observed in the production walk; it does not automatically choose names for explicit user requests.
Evidence
19/19 focused service-builder/runtime tests pass on Node 22. Returning-user fixture occupies sam-xu-claude and sam-xu-claude-2 and verifies -3 in every OS command. Explicit-name, length, bounded-exhaustion and lookup-failure cases covered.
Disabling the selection branch makes the returning-user assertion fail: expected sam-xu-claude-3, got sam-xu-claude. Source restored.
Backend production tsconfig.build.json typecheck and diff check pass. Targeted source lint has 0 errors, 16 existing warnings in nativeRuntimeService.ts.
The broader tsconfig.json invocation fails in existing cleanup/test-discord utility files, with no changed-source diagnostics; production build config passes.
CI and exact-head code/security review pending. No deployed returning-user walk yet.
The BYO handoff flow checks generated names against AgentRegistry and selects an available base name or suffix. Explicitly supplied names bypass this check. Lookup failures and timeouts retain the default name.

Summary
Bounded name selection backend/services/byoHandoffService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/byoHandoffService.test.ts
availableByoHandoffName checks up to 100 candidates, including suffixed names that fit the length limit. Tests cover available names, exhausted candidates, and lookup errors.
Runtime collision checks and payload rebuild backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.byoHandoff.test.js
When the caller omits a name, the runtime checks AgentRegistry and rebuilds the payload with an available name. Lookup failures and timeouts retain the default name. Explicit names bypass registry lookups.

Post a visible fallback when name selection fails.
If AgentRegistry.exists rejects, or all 100 names are taken, availableByoHandoffName throws before the card is posted. The outer catch returns a tool error, but no pod message is guaranteed. Handle these failures at this call site: post an unverified-name handoff when lookup fails, or a visible request for an explicit name when candidates are exhausted. Add a runtime test that asserts a message is posted on lookup failure. As per path instructions, a failed lookup must “fail toward over-delivery,” not toward “a message or event nobody sees.”

Check global registry names before posting a default BYO handoff card.
Try numeric suffixes within the 40-character limit, preserving explicit names.
Suggestions do not reserve identity; attach retains all ownership checks.

A registry lookup error or an exhausted candidate list threw before the
card was posted, so the pod saw nothing. Keep the default name in that
case; attach still enforces ownership on it. Adds a test that a lookup
rejection still posts the card.

Assert that the failed lookup ran.
If the selection branch is removed, this test still passes: the original payload uses the same default name. Assert that mockRegistryExists was called so the test proves the fallback handled a rejection.
As per path instructions, “A test that would still pass with the fix reverted is not a test.”

At backend/__tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.byoHandoff.test.js:142-145, an empty commands object makes the loop perform no assertions. A payload with only one OS command can also pass. Assert mac, linux, and windows before checking the command contents.
Suggested test assertion
expect(posted.payload.agentName).toBe('sam-xu-claude-3');
+ expect(posted.payload.commands).toEqual({+ mac: expect.any(String),+ linux: expect.any(String),+ windows: expect.any(String),+ });
for (const command of Object.values(posted.payload.commands)) {
This improves coverage of the changed returning-user behavior. It does not indicate a current production defect.

The fallback only caught rejections. A registry read that never settles
kept availableByoHandoffName pending, so the handoff card never posted.

Reviewed the two-file diff against 062b694. The 3s deadline wraps the whole availableByoHandoffName walk; a timeout or rejection takes the existing catch and posts the default-name card. The timer is cleared in finally, and the losing promise is handled by Promise.race, so there is no unhandled rejection. The hung-lookup test runs against real timers and passes. The timed-out walk keeps running in the background, which is acceptable for an advisory lookup. Lint has 0 errors and the BYO suites pass 21/21.

Preserve confirmed collisions across the timeout fallback.
If the base lookup finds a foreign ephemeral agent and the suffix lookup remains pending until the deadline, the catch retains the occupied base name. The attach route then rejects the handoff with agent_name_taken.
The fallback is intentional for unknown lookup failures, but it should not discard a confirmed base collision. Preserve that state and provide visible guidance instead. Community-published names follow a different contract and are not rejected by this path.

Update the `availableName` lookup’s timeout fallback so a confirmed collision
with a foreign ephemeral agent remains recorded when the suffix lookup times
out, and provide visible guidance for resolving that collision rather than
rejecting the handoff with `agent_name_taken`. Keep the fallback for unknown
lookup failures and preserve the separate contract for community-published
names.
