fix(byo): the connect card proposes the name the connect page lands on (TASK-329) - #2901
The connect page suggests a free BYO name through GET /api/registry/agents/next-free-name, but the connect card's proposal only checked foreign-owner collisions. The card could propose x-claude-2 and the page would silently re-suffix it to x-claude-2-2 (observed by Lumen on the 8e0b7ae walk).
Ruled A by Lily (decision 6ae126a1a815dc09cde0efa5): the card checks first. The suffix rule now lives in one place, backend/services/byoNameAllocator.ts, and both the route and proposeAction call it.
A seat this owner already holds in this pod is a reconnect and keeps its name.
Known gap
An approval-time race remains: executeConnectLocalAgent still re-checks only the foreign owner. If a name is taken between proposal and approval, the connect page can still re-suffix. Accepted under Lily's ruling.
Tests
__tests__/service/byo-next-free-name.test.js: an existing install takes the base name and -2, and the card proposes -3, which the connect page keeps. Reconnect keeps the name.
__tests__/unit/services/approvalActionService.decider.test.js: the Pod mock gains find, because the allocator lists the caller's pods.
Ran on Node 22: byo-next-free-name, approvalActionService and proposerWake suites, 64/64 passing. ESLint: 0 errors.
Ships in the first deploy after launch, per Lily. Merges any time.

The registry route and local-agent proposal flow now use a shared BYO name allocator. Proposal handling preserves an existing owner installation name or stores an allocated name in the card parameters and summary.
Changes: BYO Name Allocation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared name allocation backend/services/byoNameAllocator.ts, backend/routes/registry/catalog.ts
The allocator checks active installation names in eligible private pods, compares names without case sensitivity, and adds suffixes when needed. The registry route now uses this helper.
Proposal handling keeps the name when the owner already has an active installation in the target pod. Otherwise, it allocates a name and stores the resulting parameters and summary. Tests cover allocation and reconnect behavior.

Use the local-agent length limit when allocating a card name.
If a valid 40-character requested name is taken, this line appends -2 without shortening it. proposeAction then rejects the 42-character result, although a shorter suffixed name is available. Make the allocation limit explicit for each caller, and test a collision at 40 characters. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Check ownership of the allocated name before posting the card.
If the owner holds sam-claude and another user owns sam-claude-2 outside the owner's member pods, the requested-name check passes and the allocator selects sam-claude-2. The card is posted, but executeConnectLocalAgent rejects that name after approval. Skip foreign-owned candidates before persisting the proposal. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Send the revised summary as the message fallback.
When allocation changes a name, the saved summary and card payload use cardSummary, but postMessage still uses trimmedSummary for plain-text content. Legacy views and notifications can therefore show the name the card did not propose. Pass cardSummary to postMessage and assert the delivered content in the proposal test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

CodeQL flagged a regular expression built from user input on the new
connect-card rewrite. The name is validated to [a-z0-9-], but escape it
anyway so the rule is local.

Use cardSummary for the plain-text card content.
When allocation changes the name, the payload uses cardSummary, but content still uses trimmedSummary. The documented fallback surfaces can therefore show the requested name while approval executes the allocated name. Pass cardSummary to content.

Ensure the summary uses the allocated name.
requestedName is lowercased, but summary is not. If the request uses Sam-Claude and allocation returns sam-claude-2, this regex does not match. The stored parameters then use sam-claude-2 while the card summary shows Sam-Claude. The same occurs when the summary omits the requested name. Use case-insensitive replacement and reject or rebuild the summary when no replacement occurs. Add tests for both cases.

Gate at 8f3617a (TASK-329, BYO connect card name).
The card now proposes the name the connect page lands on, through the shared nextFreeByoName in backend/services/byoNameAllocator.ts. The route and proposeAction call the same function, so they cannot disagree.
The foreign-owner check still runs on the requested name before the rewrite. executeConnectLocalAgent re-checks at approval time, so a foreign owner cannot be bound through the rewritten name.
Reconnects of a same-owner install in this pod keep their name.
Tests cover the free-name proposal and the reconnect case.
Non-blocking, a follow-up rather than a hold: nextFreeByoName only checks the owner's private pods. A suffixed name that another owner holds instance-wide therefore passes the proposal and is refused at approval. The old route on main used the same private-pod scope, so this PR does not introduce the gap. A card that shows a name refused at approval is a UX defect, not a security one.
…arrived (#2917)
Rebuilt on main after #2901 (TASK-329) moved the name rule into
byoNameAllocator. The keyless-own-install exemption now lives in the
allocator, behind an optional podId, so the connect page and the connect
card propose the same name:
- nextFreeByoName(userId, base, { podId }): the caller's own webhook
install in that pod whose agent holds no key does not take its name.
No pod, no exemption.
- GET next-free-name passes ?podId; proposeAction passes the card's pod.
- issueRuntimeTokenForAgent counts a legacy key on any installation of
the identity, uninstalled included, as existing.
- V2AgentBYO: on "already installed" try the ordinary (non-rotating)
issue; send podId with BYO lookups only.
- Tests: the seven page cases now run through the allocator, plus a card
case that lands on the same exempted name.
