TASK-645 item 5: the runner is picked before the install, not after

Tier 1 (flow and copy on the Bring your own page; one UI gate, then Vera and Lily's BYO lane review, per row TASK-645).

Ruled by Lily in pod 6a692a1be833c668acdb84cf (decision 6ae507ca688eff4d3ab61b55, "Hide the switch after issue; start over to use Codex"), with the way back requested in msg 116556.

After issue, the listener's runner switch kept the issued name. The page said "Connect your Codex" while the command ran commonly agent run <user>-claude --adapter codex. The name follows the runner, so the switch is gone after issue.

  • After issue, the only control is "Use a different adapter". It returns to the start. It does not call the API, and it does not delete or rename the install, which stays listed.
  • A card (?from=card) shows no runner picker: the card's name and adapter are settled, and the approval already installed under the name. From a card, "Use a different adapter" opens the plain Bring your own page with the card's name not carried over, so the name follows the runner.
  • The BYO start had no runner choice, only ?adapter=. It now has a Claude Code / Codex pair in the compact start and the full form. The default name follows the pick, so a Codex pick names <user>-codex.

zh-CN strings (key, before, after)

key before after
agentByo.listen.useDifferentRunner (new) 换一种适配器
agentByo.listen.switchToCodex 我用的是 Codex (removed: no runner switch after issue)
agentByo.listen.switchToClaude 我用的是 Claude Code (removed)

The English string is "Use a different adapter" (new; changed from "Use a different runner" after Vera's review to match the picker's "Adapter" label). The zh-CN value is unchanged. The runner pair reuses the existing agentByo.form.adapterLabel, adapterClaude and adapterCodex keys, so it adds no zh-CN text. 换一种适配器 matches the 适配器 label already used for "Adapter"; I could not find the glossary term in this repo, so the two-pass should confirm it.

Checks

  • V2AgentBYOListenSnippet.test.tsx, V2AgentBYOFromCard.test.tsx, V2AgentBYOPodPicker.test.tsx, plus src/i18n: 74/74 at f106bf4.
  • Tests cover: a card shows no picker, before or after issue; back from a card lands on the plain page with the name following the runner; issue as Claude, back, Codex issues a second install named <user>-codex with --adapter codex; a Codex pick names <user>-codex and passes --adapter codex; after issue no switch renders and the way back does; the way back calls no API and no delete; the title follows the pick; a Codex install shows no Claude-only lines.

Not in this PR: the moved affordances (TASK-647). Walk at 1440 and 390 happens on staging after merge, per the row.

Review fix (CodeRabbit r4428846350)

  • The next-free-name lookup used the card name as its base after "Use a different adapter", so the server answer overwrote the Codex name. The lookup now uses the card name only while the card is on screen. Test: card, back, Codex, issue again names sam-codex with --adapter codex; fails without the fix.

BYO setup now lets users select Claude Code or Codex before issuing an agent. After issuance, the runner switch is unavailable. The return action clears the issued agent and restores setup. Updated locale strings and tests cover runner-specific commands, platform handling, and card-based setup.

Reset the mock implementation before queuing the second issue responses.

afterEach uses jest.clearAllMocks(), which does not remove queued mockResolvedValueOnce implementations. Earlier tests leave responses in the queue, so the second issue can consume stale responses instead of the responses added here.

The current assertions already fail if the runner-reset behavior is reverted. This change is still needed to isolate the second issue's responses.

Opus code gate for #3019 (TASK-645 item 5). Head: 235541a. I ran everything below on a clean merge of this head with current main.

The code does what the ruling asks. HOLD because two of the four properties have no test that can fail.

1. "No runner switch after issue" is true, but untested. In code, setListenAdapter has one caller, the picker. runnerPicker is mode === 'byo' && !issued, and both of its placements sit inside !issued blocks. The old switch is gone. The tests, though, assert queryByTestId('byo-listen-adapter-switch') is null, and nothing in the component renders that testid any more, so the assertion passes whatever the page shows. Mutant: render {runnerPicker} on the command page, next to "Use a different runner", with the !issued guard dropped. All 11 BYO suites stay green, 129 of 129.
Fix: after issue, assert queryByTestId('byo-runner') is null, which is the picker's own testid.

2. "A Codex pick from there names <user>-codex" is true off the card path, but untested. With a Claude issue, going back, then Codex, I measured the name field becoming sam-codex, the second install POST carrying agentName: 'sam-codex', and the command reading commonly agent run sam-codex --adapter codex. The only test that goes back and picks Codex is the card test, and on a card the name never follows the runner (see below). Mutant: going back also sets nameTouched, so a Codex pick keeps the issued sam-claude. That stays green, 129 of 129.
Fix: a non-card test. Issue as Claude, go back, pick Codex, issue again, then assert the install body's agentName and the command line.

Checked and correct

  • Both placements are mutually exclusive. Line 1151 is inside showCompactByo && !issued && …, and line 1312 is inside !showCompactHosted && !showCompactByo && !issued && …. I measured one byo-runner on screen in the compact card form, in the full form, and after going back on each.
  • Going back makes no call. Across the click and 400 ms after it, I counted GET, POST, PATCH and DELETE: no new call of any verb. The 4 s listener poll and the post-issue offer timer both stop with issued, and the once-per-view hosted-offer-shown count doesn't fire again. These mutants redden: going back deleting the install (3 tests), going back doing nothing (2), no picker on the compact card form (1), no picker on the full form (6).
  • Keys. switchToCodex and switchToClaude have no reader left anywhere in frontend/src, and nothing builds a switchTo… key dynamically. en and zh-CN are the only locales, and both carry listen.useDifferentRunner. The picker reuses the existing form.adapterLabel, adapterClaude and adapterCodex keys.
  • CI is green. CodeRabbit's mock-exhaustion thread is answered.

The card path, for the ruling rather than this diff. A card prefills name, which sets nameTouched, so a runner pick there keeps the card's name. That is the page's standing rule for a chosen name, and the approval has already installed under it. Two consequences follow. First, the new compact picker lets a sam-claude card issue commonly agent run sam-claude --adapter codex before issue, the mismatch this PR's comment says it prevents. Second, going back on a card and issuing again sends the same name. The real server answers "already installed" and existing: true, so the page shows the replace-key confirmation, and confirming it rotates the first key. The card test's second issue mocks a fresh install and a fresh token, so it asserts a "Connect your Codex" screen a real card never reaches directly. Either mock what the server returns there and assert the confirmation, or rule whether a card should offer the picker at all.

Non-blocking

  • In English the picker is labelled "Adapter", and the link reads "Use a different runner". zh-CN uses 适配器 for both.

Assert the final installed name.

The synchronous getByDisplayValue('sam-codex') check does not prove the value used by the install request after the asynchronous lookup completes. Assert that the second /api/registry/install call contains agentName: 'sam-codex'.

The install request does not contain adapter; that value appears in the generated command instead.

Clear the pending key replacement when the runner changes.

If token issuance returns existing: true, the replacement confirmation remains visible after the user selects another runner. Confirming it can revoke the key for the previous agent rather than issue the newly selected agent. Clear pendingReplacement on runner changes, as the name and pod controls do. Head: 55d91ae.

HOLD. The delta does what it says. But the new runner picker still has two ways to issue a claude-named install under a Codex command, and ruling that out is the point of this PR. CodeRabbit raised both as quiet items at this head, and I reproduced both.

What I verified in the delta. I ran the 11 V2AgentBYO* suites on a probe merge onto main 275e8ad: 134/134 pass.

  • My two earlier mutants now fail tests:
    • Putting the picker back on the command page fails "picking Codex before the install … and no runner".
    • Pinning the name on the way back (setNameTouched(true) in backToStart) fails the card-back test's sam-codex assertion.
  • Going back from a card leaves nothing acting as a card. Each mutant below makes at least one test fail:
    • Back keeps onCardStart: 2 tests fail. Back keeps compactByo: 2 fail. Back keeps nameTouched: 1 fails.
    • The picker shows on a card: the new card test fails.
    • The way back deletes the install: 5 fail. The way back does nothing: 4 fail.
    • The full-form picker is removed: 9 fail.
  • Reverting namePrefill either way fails a test:
    • Back to prefill.name fails the card-back-Codex test.
    • Back to onCardStart ? prefill.name : '' fails the V2AgentBYOMemory deep-link test ("picking the pod that holds the unkeyed install takes back the suggested suffix").
  • The en label "Use a different adapter" and the zh-CN "换一种适配器" agree.

Defects. I reproduced both with a throwaway test at this head.

  1. The replace-key prompt survives a runner switch.
    • Issue as Claude when sam-claude already holds a key, and the page asks whether to replace sam-claude's key.
    • Pick Codex. The name field changes to sam-codex, but the prompt stays and still names sam-claude.
    • Click Replace. It force-rotates sam-claude's key (POST …/agents/sam-claude/runtime-tokens with force: true) and renders commonly agent run sam-claude --adapter codex.
    • The name and pod controls clear pendingReplacement when they change. The runner buttons don't. Clear it in the runner onClick too, and add a test for this path.
  2. The runner can change while the issue is in flight.
    • Hold the token response, click Get my connect command, then pick Codex before it resolves. The picker is present and enabled during the submit.
    • The install goes out as sam-claude, and the run line is commonly agent run sam-claude --adapter codex.
    • Either disable the runner buttons while submitting, or record the runner in issued and build the snippet from it. A test with a deferred token response pins either fix.

Not blocking:

  • setName(defaultNameFor('byo', listenAdapter)) in backToStart is redundant. Removing it keeps 134/134, because clearing nameTouched re-runs the effect that sets the default name.
  • The {runnerPicker} in the compact card block can never render now. The compact view needs the card state, and backToStart clears both together. Removing it keeps 134/134.
  • This head still conflicts with #3016's current head (7aa5bb6) in V2AgentBYOListenSnippet.test.tsx.

CI has no failing or pending check.

After issue, the listener's switch kept the issued name, so "Connect your Codex"
ran `commonly agent run sam-claude --adapter codex`. The name follows the
runner, so the runner is now picked before the install, and after issue the
only control is "Use a different runner". That returns to the start without
changing or deleting the install, which stays listed.

The BYO start had no runner choice, only ?adapter=. It now has a Claude Code /
Codex pair, shown in the compact start and the full form.

Tests: a Codex pick names the install sam-codex; after issue no switch renders
and the way back does; the way back calls no API; Codex listeners show no
Claude-only lines.

Both defects from the hold at 55d91ae are fixed. Ran on a probe merge of this head onto main 48ce204, with the same tree as the PR merge.

  1. Stale replace prompt. Reproduction: the install is rejected as already installed, the token comes back existing: true, then Codex is picked. It no longer reproduces. The prompt is gone after the pick, and re-issuing gives commonly agent run sam-codex --adapter codex with no force-rotate call. Reverting the setPendingReplacement(null) in the runner click turns "switching runner clears the replace-key prompt" red, and nothing else.
  2. Picker during submit. With the token response held open, both runner buttons render disabled, and the install goes out as sam-claude / --adapter claude. Removing disabled={submitting} turns "the runner picker is disabled while an issue is in flight" red, and nothing else.
  3. Rebase. In every file the PR already touched, the changed lines match 55d91ae against its base. The only new code is the four-line runner button change and the new test file.
  4. Dropped "I use Codex instead" test. The post-issue switch it clicked is gone from the component. Its Codex run-line and needs-line assertions now live in "picking Codex before the install gives a Codex command named for Codex", and the old switch-click tests became separate Codex-first issues. None of the dropped coverage points at code that still exists.
  5. The EACCES change survives the merge. Its hint test is intact. Making the hint render outside listenerAvailable on the merged tree turns 4 tests red: Windows, Codex on Windows, Linux with Claude Code, Linux with Codex.
  6. Earlier mutants still hold. The 12-file baseline passes 137/137. Back-to-start keeping the card, compact mode, nameTouched or the old prefill each go red, and so do the picker on a card, the picker after issue, and both namePrefill reverts.

Non-blocking:

  • Leaving the name alone on back-to-start (M10) changes nothing visible, because the defaultNameFor effect resets it once nameTouched is false.
  • The {runnerPicker} in the compact branch can't render (runnerPicker is null whenever onCardStart holds), so removing it changes nothing.
  • On its own, the rekey test's "no force call" assert proves nothing, because Replace is never clicked. The prompt-absence assert is the one that catches the revert.

CI: 27 checks, none failing or pending. CodeRabbit skipped this head, and its one reply here resolves the earlier namePrefill thread.

BYO lane and zh-CN two-pass review for #3019 (TASK-645 item 5) at 859a883, rebased onto 48ce204 after #3016.

  • Card ruling holds. A card owns its runner: with from=card there's no picker. "Use a different adapter" (backToStart) leaves the card for the plain flow, clearing the card state, the compact view and the name prefill. Only a card's ?name= drops after leaving it. Plain ?name= deep links keep their lookup (V2AgentBYOMemory is green).
  • Vera's two defects are closed and pinned. A runner click clears pendingReplacement, and the runner buttons are disabled while submitting. V2AgentBYORunnerSwitchRekey covers both, and Vera's PASS is at this head.
  • The rebase kept #3016's work. The EACCES hint test and its listener-gate asserts are in V2AgentBYOListenSnippet. The dropped "I use Codex instead" test clicked a switch this PR removes.
  • Strings. en useDifferentRunner reads "Use a different adapter". zh-CN useDifferentRunner reads "换一种适配器": adapter is 适配器 per the glossary, it's verb-first and short, and it has no 您 and no calque. Adjudicated: ships. switchToCodex and switchToClaude are removed in both locales, and nothing reads them.
key before after reason
en useDifferentRunner (new) Use a different adapter one control replaces the two per-runner switches
zh-CN useDifferentRunner (new) 换一种适配器 glossary 适配器; verb-first
switchToCodex / switchToClaude 我用的是 Codex / 我用的是 Claude Code removed the switch is gone
