fix(byo): say what to do when npm -g hits EACCES (TASK-645 item 2) - #3016
TASK-645 item 2: npm -g EACCES hint on the listener page
Tier 1 (copy under the listener command on the Bring your own page; one UI gate, then Lily's BYO lane review and zh-CN two-pass, per row TASK-645).
On a stock Mac Node install, npm i -g @commonlyai/cli@latest fails with EACCES, and the page gave no hint. The listener box now says, under the command, what to do and that sudo is not the fix: reinstall Node with a version manager such as nvm, then run the four lines again.
Revised after lane HOLD (Lily, 2026-10-30): the earlier advice to install Node from nodejs.org was the cause of EACCES on macOS (root-owned /usr/local), and the npm config set prefix ~/.npm-global route leaves ~/.npm-global/bin off PATH, so commonly is not found. Both are dropped.
frontend/src/i18n/locales/en.json and zh-CN.json: new key agentByo.listen.npmPermission.
frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentBYO.tsx: the hint renders only when the listener is available, right after the command box.
frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2AgentBYOListenSnippet.test.tsx: asserts the hint text and that it follows the command. The item 1 zh-CN floor test is kept.
V2AgentBYOListenSnippet.test.tsx and src/i18n: 50/50 at the branch head. The ungated-hint mutant fails the Windows, Linux and Codex-on-Windows tests.
Review fixes (Vera HOLD on b98cab1): the hint is asserted absent where no listener runs. The Homebrew parenthetical is dropped in both locales (Lily's ruling): nvm works on Intel and Apple silicon.
Not in this PR: items 3 and 4, and the moved affordances (TASK-647). Walk at 1440 and 390 happens on staging after merge, per the row.

Add the npm global bin directory to PATH.
@commonlyai/cli declares the commonly executable. With the prefix set to ~/.npm-global, npm places it under ~/.npm-global/bin. The four displayed commands do not add that directory to PATH, so the final command can fail with command not found.
Apply this correction in both locales.

Do not present the nodejs.org installer as a reliable EACCES fix.
npm documents that Node installers can cause global-install permission errors and recommends a version manager instead. This message sends users with the reported error to an option that can reproduce the same failure. Replace nodejs.org with a version-manager option, or make Homebrew the supported reinstall path, in both locale strings. (docs.npmjs.com)

The test renders English only. Its separate Chinese assertion reads needs directly from JSON and does not render npmPermission. The English assertion also omits the published Node-install and npm-prefix guidance. Add assertions for those existing remedies and render the listener after switching to zh-CN.
Do not require a PATH-update assertion unless the translation is separately changed to publish that instruction. The current translation publishes only the npm prefix command.

BYO lane review for #3016 (TASK-645 item 2), at 370527c.
HOLD: the hint's advice is wrong in two places, and someone who hits EACCES will follow it literally.
"Install Node from nodejs.org" is the usual source of EACCES on macOS, not the fix. The nodejs.org .pkg installs Node into /usr/local owned by root, so a later npm install -g hits EACCES, which is exactly the case this hint is for. npm's own guide ("Resolving EACCES permissions errors when installing packages globally") recommends reinstalling Node with a version manager, or changing npm's prefix. Homebrew is a correct route on macOS, because it installs into a user-owned prefix. Suggested en: "If npm stops with EACCES (permission denied), don't add sudo. Reinstall Node with a version manager such as nvm (or with Homebrew on a Mac), then run the four lines again."
The prefix route is missing its PATH step. After npm config set prefix ~/.npm-global, the commonly binary lands in ~/.npm-global/bin, which isn't on PATH, so the next line fails with "command not found". Either add the step ("…then add ~/.npm-global/bin to your PATH") or drop this route and keep the version-manager one. Dropping it keeps the hint short; I'd drop it.
Also: the hint renders whenever the listener box is available, as standing advice, not only after an error (the page can't detect EACCES). That's fine, because the copy is conditional ("If npm stops…"). Keep it conditional.
zh-CN: re-translate whatever en you settle on. Keep 你, the half-width spaces and "不要加 sudo". A version manager is 版本管理工具 (nvm stays English). Put the before/after table in the PR body.
Layout: one short paragraph in the existing v2-byo__listen-note style, with no new layout rules. I'll walk it on staging after the merge.

Cover the complete English remediation in the test.
The current test checks EACCES, the sudo warning, and placement. It does not check the recommendation to reinstall Node with a version manager or Homebrew, or to rerun all four lines. The test can stay green if those actionable parts regress. Add assertions for each required action, and verify that removing each clause makes its assertion fail.
As per path instructions, every changed user-visible behavior needs a paired assertion that fails when the behavior is reverted.

HOLD. The gate that keeps the hint inside the listener box has no test, and the Homebrew half of the advice is wrong on Intel Macs.
What holds:
Placement: the hint sits inside the listener box, after the command's copy box and before the waiting line. It's behind the same listenerAvailable flag as the command. It uses v2-byo__listen-note, the plain class the waiting, note and reach lines already use, with no error class and no role="alert". It's standing copy, not an error state.
Tests: the probe merge onto main is tree-identical to this head. The 11 V2AgentBYO* suites pass, 126/126, and CI is green.
Mutants: removing the hint fails the new test. Moving it above the command box also fails it, on the ordering assertion.
"The four lines" is accurate. The listener snippet is exactly the npm i -g install, two exports and the run line, and the install is the line that hits EACCES.
nvm is right on macOS and Linux. It puts Node and the npm global prefix under the user's home, so npm i -g no longer needs root. The Node 20+ floor test is still there.
The zh-CN says the same as the en, clause for clause: EACCES (permission denied), no sudo, a version manager such as nvm, Homebrew on a Mac, then the four lines again.
Defects:
The listenerAvailable gate on the hint is untested. With the hint made unconditional ({true && (), all 126 tests stay green. In that state Windows and Linux show "then run the four lines again" right under the notice that no listener runs there, so there are no four lines to run. The fix is one line in each of the existing Windows and Linux tests: expect(screen.queryByTestId('byo-listen-npm-hint')).toBeNull();. I ran both lines. They're green at this head, and both tests go red under the ungated mutant, with the hint as the received node.
"(or with Homebrew on a Mac)" only holds on Apple silicon. Homebrew's current installer refuses Intel Macs: lines 169–173 of https://github.com/Homebrew/install/blob/HEAD/install.sh run abort "Homebrew on macOS is only supported on Apple Silicon processors!". An Intel Mac user without Homebrew who takes the parenthetical hits that abort. Either scope it to Apple silicon in both locales ("or with Homebrew on an Apple silicon Mac" / "在 Apple 芯片的 Mac 上也可以用 Homebrew"), or drop it and keep nvm, which works on both.
Not blocking: this head and #3019's current head (f106bf4) conflict in V2AgentBYOListenSnippet.test.tsx, so whichever merges second needs a rebase.

… advice is Apple silicon only (TASK-645 item 2)
Vera HOLD on #3016: the hint sits behind listenerAvailable but no test
pinned it, so Windows and Linux would show four lines to run that do not
exist. Assert the hint is absent in those tests; the ungated mutant fails
three of them. Homebrew's installer refuses Intel Macs, so the parenthetical
now says Apple silicon in en and zh-CN.

The advice is right on every platform it shows on. nvm puts Node and the npm global prefix under the user's home, so npm i -g stops needing root on both Intel and Apple silicon Macs and on Linux. The Homebrew parenthetical is gone, so nothing points an Intel Mac at an installer that aborts (Vera's finding). No sudo, and no nodejs.org .pkg, which was the cause on macOS.
It shows only where it applies. The hint is asserted absent in the Windows, Linux and Codex-on-Windows tests, so "run the four lines again" never appears under the notice that no listener runs there.
zh-CN. Terminology: 智能体 isn't in this string, and npm, EACCES, sudo, nvm and Node stay English, with half-width spacing around Latin. Voice: no 您, no calque; it reads as a direct instruction. Adjudicated: "如果 npm 报 EACCES(权限被拒绝),不要加 sudo。请用版本管理工具(如 nvm)重新安装 Node,然后重新运行这四行。" ships as is. en and zh say the same thing clause for clause.

PASS. This supersedes my HOLD at b98cab1, and both defects from that review are fixed.
The gate is now pinned. The Windows, Linux and Codex-on-Windows tests each assert byo-listen-npm-hint is absent. I made the hint unconditional ({true && () and exactly those three tests fail. Removing the hint fails the hint test, and so does moving it above the command box. The suites ran on a probe merge onto main 834fd28: the 11 V2AgentBYO* suites pass 128/128.
Neither locale gives Homebrew advice. en now reads "Reinstall Node with a version manager such as nvm, then run the four lines again." zh-CN reads "请用版本管理工具(如 nvm)重新安装 Node,然后重新运行这四行。" They match clause for clause, and the word Homebrew no longer appears anywhere in either locale file. nvm is correct on macOS and Linux.
Nothing else changed. Since b98cab1 the diff is the one string in each of the two locales plus four test lines. V2AgentBYO.tsx is byte-identical, and the branch base is still 84f2680.
Not blocking:
CodeRabbit's quiet item at this head is right. The hint test checks EACCES, sudo and placement, but not "nvm" or "run the four lines again". A copy edit that drops either still passes, and nothing tests the zh-CN hint.
This head still conflicts with #3019's current head (55d91ae) in V2AgentBYOListenSnippet.test.tsx. Whichever PR merges second needs a rebase.
Triage of CodeRabbit's outside-diff note ("Assert the complete npm guidance", V2AgentBYOListenSnippet.test.tsx:162-170): skipped, not a defect. The test pins the hint's presence, placement and listener gate, which are the behaviours that can regress. The copy itself is checked at review time, by Vera's gate and the Launch lane plus zh-CN two-pass at this head. A full-string assertion would mostly duplicate the locale file.
