TASK-479

Tier 1. Reject extended-year chat timestamps on Mongo message creation/save, and refuse malformed or nonportable before cursors before querying either message store. Mongo/JS accept +078915 ISO years, but PG rejects that cursor syntax. Previously a request could fall back to Mongo for a cursor error rather than a database outage.

  • createdAt is required and bounded to years 0001–9999. Existing valid timestamps and default server time remain intact.
  • getMessages validates calendar days, four-digit years and ISO cursor syntax, then normalizes valid cursors to UTC. It returns 400 for invalid dates, extended years and repeated query parameters; it does not enter PG/Mongo fallback for them.

Test-first: six new negative cases fail on main (41 pass), then all 54 tests pass after the change. Includes leap-day, Z and offset cursor controls, impossible-calendar refusals, real-Mongo persistence rejection, both accepted year boundaries saved/reloaded, and controller checks that neither message query runs. Backend build passes; touched TS lint has zero errors and three existing warnings. No existing stored data is repaired, no live DB mutation performed, and raw collection writes can bypass Mongoose validation.

Walkthrough

The message controller validates supplied before cursors before database reads and normalizes valid cursors to UTC. The message schema requires createdAt and limits it to UTC years 0001–9999. Tests cover invalid cursors and timestamp boundaries.

Reject calendar-invalid cursors before querying PostgreSQL.

For before=2019-02-30, JavaScript can normalize the nonexistent day to March 2, so this guard accepts it. PostgreSQL rejects the original string passed to PGMessage.findByPodId. The catch then returns a Mongo-only page instead of the required 400; that page can omit PG messages. Validate the calendar date and timestamp syntax before either query, and add this cursor to the rejection cases. (tc39.es)

Otto, gate measured at 332014a913eb92bf948e31a52287013a8edf8d05.

CODE HOLD for #2645 / TASK-479.

Blocking findings:

  • backend/controllers/messageController.ts:92-94: the guard validates a parsed Date but passes the original string to PostgreSQL at :145. I verified CodeRabbit's calendar finding and extended it to an ISO extended-year spelling: 2019-02-30 normalizes to 2019-03-02T00:00:00.000Z; +002026-01-01T00:00:00.000Z normalizes to the legal year 2026. Both pass this guard. Local real PostgreSQL 17 rejects the original strings with SQLSTATE 22008 and 22009 respectively. Extending the author's controller fixture shows both reaching PG and then returning [] from Mongo after the simulated PG parse rejection, with no 400. This retains the malformed-cursor fallback the PR intends to prevent, and can omit PG-only messages. Validate the actual cursor syntax and calendar before querying, or otherwise ensure the original incompatible string never reaches PG; pair refusal checks with no query to either store. Three controls (leap-day ISO and both accepted year boundaries) pass.
  • CR thread unanswered: #2645 (comment) . The boundary test only calls validate(), despite using MongoMemoryServer. I independently changed it locally to save/reload and verify createdAt plus podId/userId/content/messageType; both boundaries round-trip unchanged. That confirms the production model side works, but the committed test and thread still need the author's answer. CodeRabbit's calendar observation is also unanswered in the review's “Other comments.”

Verification at this head (Node 22):

  • jest --runInBand --watchAll=false --runTestsByPath __tests__/unit/models/Message.test.js __tests__/unit/controllers/messageController.test.js: 47/47 pass.
  • Added controller controls: 2 refusal failures, 3 valid-cursor passes. The controller proof mocks the PG rejection; the SQLSTATE measurements above are separate literal casts on real local PG, not a deployed request.
  • Expanded model suite: 13/13 pass, including the Mongo persistence round-trips and additional rejections for year 10000, negative year, null and malformed date.
  • Temporary probes restored; worktree clean. Exact head unchanged, OPEN/non-draft. CI has no pending checks; Test & Coverage, Service Tests and E2E pass. coderabbit-threads fails for the unanswered thread.

No defect found in the new createdAt bounds/default behavior. Existing raw collection writes and unvalidated update operations remain outside Mongoose save validation; no legacy-data repair was requested.

This HOLD binds only this head; an amended head needs a fresh gate.

Otto review 5638920480 addressed: the cursor guard now validates a four-digit ISO date/timestamp and calendar day before Date parsing, then sends canonical UTC to PG. February 30, nonleap-century February 29, April 31 and +002026 are rejected before either store is queried. Leap-day, Z timestamp and offset timestamp controls stay on PG. Boundary save/reload is already fixed and answered in discussion_r4367683093. Full focused controller/model suites: 54/54; backend build passes. Fresh CI/CodeRabbit pending before Otto re-gate.

Cover UTC-year rollover in the invalid cursor table.

Add 0001-01-01T00:00:00+01:00 and 9999-12-31T23:30:00-01:00. Assert HTTP 400 and no query to either message store.

+ it.each(['2019-02-30', '+002026-01-01T00:00:00.000Z', '1900-02-29', '2026-04-31', '+078915-01-01T00:00:00.000Z', '0000-01-01T00:00:00Z', '0001-01-01T00:00:00+01:00', '9999-12-31T23:30:00-01:00', 'garbage', ['2026-01-01', '2026-01-02']])(

These inputs have valid four-digit local years, but convert to UTC years 0000 and 10000. They exercise the controller's UTC-year guard. The existing invalid cases do not cover this branch, and the valid offset case remains within UTC year 2026.

Otto, gate measured at 750281c1b4f414e4384cef3a10874cfa84fd5a54.

This supersedes HOLD review 5638920480, which is void for the amended head and remains pinned to dead 332014a913eb92bf948e31a52287013a8edf8d05.

CODE PASS for #2645 / TASK-479. Both prior blockers are closed; no remaining defect found in the requested timestamp and cursor properties.

Remedy measured with the original instrument (Node 22):

  • jest --runInBand --watchAll=false --runTestsByPath __tests__/unit/models/Message.test.js __tests__/unit/controllers/messageController.test.js: 54/54 pass at the exact amended head.
  • Replayed the same two old-head counterexamples through the real controller fixture. 2019-02-30 and +002026-01-01T00:00:00.000Z now return 400 with zero PG queries and zero Mongo queries; the three valid leap-day/year-boundary controls still pass. The previous real local PG measurements were 22008/22009 for those raw strings; the amended guard rejects them before either store.
  • The new calendar check is independently exercised: removing its month/day bounds turns three committed refusal cases red (February 30, nonleap-century February 29, April 31). Removing canonicalization turns two committed positive cases red (date-only and timezone offset). All temporary edits restored; worktree clean.
  • The committed boundary test now saves and reloads both accepted endpoints through MongoMemoryServer and verifies createdAt, podId, userId, content and messageType. The model's original bounds/default code is unchanged by the amendment.
  • Source eslint: 0 errors, 4 warnings. Diff check clean. Fetched current main 08dcab9: merge-tree clean; no intervening main commit touches the four changed files.
  • Final paginated exact-head CI: every check complete with success/skip, zero pending/failing, including Test & Coverage, real-DB Service Tests and E2E. CodeRabbit Review completed at this head; coderabbit-threads green, prior boundary thread answered by 4367701438 and calendar finding addressed in 6386582111. GitHub OPEN/non-draft/MERGEABLE/CLEAN; full head rechecked before filing.

Limits: no legacy-data repair or deployed mutation was performed. Direct collection writes and update operations without validators remain outside Mongoose save validation, as before. The controller intentionally accepts its declared ISO date/timestamp grammar and sends canonical UTC to PG, rather than accepting every string JavaScript can parse.

This PASS dies with the head.

CodeRabbit nit in review 5638951717 (#2645 (review)), UTC-year rollover coverage: not fixing in this gate because the production UTC-year guard already refuses both values. I verified the suggestion by extending the controller fixture locally with 0001-01-01T00:00:00+01:00 and 9999-12-31T23:30:00-01:00: both return 400 with neither store queried; invalid-cursor table 10/10 passes. The extra rows are reviewer probes, not committed coverage. This is a nonblocking test-coverage suggestion; no production defect found. Temporary changes restored.
