TASK-503 slice 2. This puts the pod-message reads behind one repository, following Otto's TASK-504 contract: repositories return plain values, and the first one was agentPodReadCursorRepository.

What changes

  • New backend/repositories/messageRepository.ts with listPodMessages(podId, { limit, before }). It reads PostgreSQL first and falls back to MongoDB in this one place. Either store returns the row shape of models/pg/Message findByPodId, oldest first. Mongo reads use .lean().
  • The three read sites that each had their own PG-then-Mongo branch and their own Mongo row mapping now call it: messageController.getMessages, the showcase feed (readRawMessages), and nativeRuntimeService.fetchRecentPodMessages.
  • Once SRE's 30-day trigger check clears, removing the read fallback is a change to this one file.

What stays

  • The write fallback (pgFallback rows), get-by-id and delete paths are unchanged. They belong to the later fallback-removal slice, which is still blocked on the 30-day count.

Behaviour changes, fallback path only

  • GET /api/messages/:podId on a PG failure now returns the Mongo page oldest first, the same order as the PG page. It used to come back newest first.
  • The fallback now uses the PG read's 1..200 limit clamp.
  • The native runtime reads is_bot for either store. The repository carries a Mongo author's populated isBot into it, so the result is unchanged.

Tests

  • New __tests__/unit/repositories/messageRepository.test.js (5 cases): the PG pass-through never touches Mongo, the limit is clamped for both stores, the fallback query/sort/populate is correct and comes back oldest first, and the Mongo row maps onto the PG shape, both populated and unpopulated. Dropping the reverse fails the order case.
  • Existing mocks are updated for the shared call shape: the controller's Mongo chain ends in .lean(), and the recent-messages test expects findByPodId(pod, n, null).
  • Locally: controllers, routes, repositories and the native runtime suites pass, apart from three route suites (registry.agent-config-kernel-run, pods.context-memory, agentsRuntime.rateLimitTiers). Those fail with a different count on each run, and they fail on main too on this host, so CI is the reference for them. lint:ts shows 0 errors. The showcase service suite injects a PG failure into the real fallback, so it runs in CI.

Tier 2: the message read path.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

backend/repositories/messageRepository.ts owns listPodMessages: PostgreSQL
first, and the MongoDB fallback in one place, returning the PG row shape
oldest first from either store. messageController.getMessages, the showcase
feed and the native runtime's recent messages now call it instead of each
carrying its own fallback branch and its own Mongo row mapping.

Two fallback-only behaviours change: the message list's Mongo page now comes
back oldest first like the PG page (it was newest first), and the fallback
honours the same 1..200 limit clamp as the PG read.

Walkthrough

A shared repository now reads pod messages from PostgreSQL and falls back to MongoDB when the PostgreSQL read throws. The message controller, showcase route, and native runtime use this repository. MongoDB documents map to a shared message shape.

Changes: Pod message reads

Layer / File(s) Summary
Repository contract and store reads
backend/repositories/messageRepository.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/repositories/messageRepository.test.js
Adds shared message types, MongoDB document mapping, limit handling, and PostgreSQL-first reads with MongoDB fallback. Tests cover limits, fallback filtering and ordering, and mapped fields.
Message read consumers
backend/controllers/messageController.ts, backend/routes/showcase.ts, backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/controllers/messageController.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.recentMessages.test.js, backend/__tests__/service/messages.test.js
Routes three message reads through the repository. The controller retains reaction enrichment and welcome-action gating. The showcase route maps repository rows and sets hasMore when the row count equals the requested limit. The native runtime recognizes bot status only when is_bot is boolean.

Code gate for #2836 at head b89cd74.

Result: HOLD. CI is red on a test that this PR broke.

What fails

  • __tests__/service/messages.test.js:69-72 asserts PGMessage.findByPodId was called with (podId, 50, undefined).
  • The new listPodMessages passes before || null (backend/repositories/messageRepository.ts:105), so the call is (podId, 50, null).
  • The same failure appears in Backend tests (2/3) and Service Tests (1/2). Run 40325960408.
  • The fix is test-only: change the expected third argument to null, or assert on the cursor's meaning rather than the exact value. PG treats null and undefined the same here, so behaviour does not change.

What I checked and found sound

  • Unit suites on Node 22: messageRepository, messageController, and nativeRuntimeService.recentMessages, 55/55.
  • Repository mutants, each restored and hash-checked: no upper clamp fails 1 test; no reverse() on the fallback fails 1; dropping the before cursor fails 1; ascending sort in the fallback fails 1.
  • Fallback shape: the Mongo path now returns the PG row shape. PG's formatMessage has no user key, so dropping the old user key from the fallback makes the fallback match the normal path.
  • Order: the fallback now returns oldest first, like PG. The old fallback returned newest first.
  • Showcase: readRawMessages caps at 100, under the repository's 200 clamp, so hasMore is unchanged.
  • Not compilable as mutants: a PG failure rethrown, or one returning empty. Both fail type-checking because of how before narrows after the try. The fallback wiring is covered by the repository test that rejects PG and expects the Mongo rows.

Passing: Backend tests (1/3) and (3/3), Frontend tests, CLI/MCP, E2E, Service Tests (2/2, which includes showcase fallback fault injection), backend typecheck and lint.

Code gate for #2836 at head dc5e838.

Scope since b89cd74: one test line. __tests__/service/messages.test.js now expects null for the before argument, matching listPodMessages (before || null). The production code is unchanged from b89cd74, where I filed HOLD (5652316454) on that exact assertion.

Checks

  • CI, all green at this head: Backend tests 1/3, 2/3, 3/3; Backend typecheck and lint; Service Tests 1/2 (messages.test.js PASS, 509/509) and 2/2 (showcase.test.js PASS, 604/604, including the Mongo fallback fault injection); CLI/MCP; Frontend; E2E.
  • Earlier at b89cd74, the affected unit suites passed 55/55 and the repository mutants were killed as recorded in that review.

Preserve the reconciled PostgreSQL ID in the Mongo fallback.

When PostgreSQL fails, a reconciled Mongo document can reach toPodMessage, but the mapper sets pgId to ''. messageController.getMessages filters that value out before calling MessageReaction.listForMessages, so the API omits reactions for the message.

Use doc.reconciledPgId for reconciled documents.

Suggested fix
-    pgId: '',
+    pgId: doc.reconciledPgId != null ? String(doc.reconciledPgId) : '',

Minor · Validate the showcase before cursor before it reaches the message repository. · showcase.ts:213

backend/routes/showcase.ts:213
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Validate the showcase before cursor before it reaches the message repository.

The showcase feed forwards any nonempty before query value to listPodMessages. The repository documents before as an ISO timestamp, but it does not validate the value. A malformed cursor fails in PostgreSQL. The Mongo fallback then fails on the same value, and the repository error reaches the route's generic error handler, so the client receives a server error for bad input.

Suggested fix
-    const before = req.query?.before ? String(req.query.before) : undefined;
+    const rawBefore = req.query?.before ? String(req.query.before) : undefined;
+    const beforeDate = rawBefore === undefined ? undefined : new Date(rawBefore);
+    if (beforeDate && Number.isNaN(beforeDate.getTime())) {
+      res.status(400).json({ error: 'Invalid before cursor' });
+      return;
+    }
+    const before = beforeDate?.toISOString();

The 400 status follows the message controller's invalid-cursor behavior. The showcase route has no documented status contract for this input, so confirm that choice with the API owner.

Reactions are keyed by the PG row id, so a reconciled message served
from the MongoDB fallback now carries reconciledPgId as pgId instead
of '' and keeps its reactions.

Replies to CodeRabbit review #2836 (review) (two findings outside the diff):

  1. messageRepository.ts:69, "Preserve the reconciled PostgreSQL ID in the Mongo fallback": fixed in bbdb42e. toPodMessage now sets pgId from reconciledPgId when present and keeps '' otherwise. Added a unit test; with the old pgId: '' restored it fails.

  2. showcase.ts:213, "Validate the showcase before cursor": not fixing in this PR, pre-existing. On main, readRawMessages already forwards any non-empty before to PGMessage.findByPodId and then to new Date(before) in the Mongo branch, so a malformed cursor already ends in the same error. This PR only moves those reads into the repository and is meant to keep behaviour the same. Cursor validation is a separate input-handling change.

Code gate for #2836 at head bbdb42e.

Scope since dc5e838: toPodMessage now sets pgId from doc.reconciledPgId when present, so a reconciled Mongo-fallback message keeps the PG id that reactions are keyed by. The field is real: backend/models/Message.ts:32 and the schema at line 71, set by the reconciler.

Checks

  • Unit: messageRepository and messageController suites pass (51/51 across the two files in my run).
  • Mutant: pgId reverted to '' for reconciled rows. The new test "carries a reconciled row's PG id" fails (1 failed, 5 passed). Restored and hash-checked.
  • CI, all green at this head: Backend tests 1/3, 2/3, 3/3; Backend typecheck and lint; Service Tests 1/2 and 2/2; CLI/MCP; Frontend; E2E.
