refactor(messages): remove the Mongo read/delete fallbacks and the reconciler (TASK-503) - #2997
TASK-503, final slice. This follows #2989, which made writes Postgres-only.
Retention check (10-31): 0 of the 75 legacy pods were exempted. None has an outside-team member who posted in the last 30 days. The one pod a founder account was active in is the internal team board, which already drops chat older than 30 days. Exempting it would stop pruning on the busiest pod to keep one row, so we didn't. The 10,441 Mongo-only rows are all older than 30 days. They stay in Mongo and are no longer shown, so the --since backfill has nothing to copy and the merge-order note above is satisfied.
Merge order: do not merge until the --since backfill has run on prod. The order is #2995 → deploy → operator runs backfill-local-messages-to-pg --since 2026-09-30T00:00:00Z, first as a dry run and then with --apply --force → this PR. SRE's count (13 Mongo rows in the last 30 days: 4 with pgFallback, 0 reconciled) means 9 rows the reconciler would never move. If this merges before the backfill, those 9 rows disappear from reads.
What changes (when PG_HOST is set)
messageRepository pod read: reads Postgres only. A PG error now rejects instead of falling back to Mongo.
agentMessageService.getRecentMessages and authorIdsSince: read Postgres only. A PG error throws.
deleteMessage: looks the message up in Postgres only. A PG error returns 503 MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE, and a Mongo-only row now returns 404. The best-effort cleanup of the legacy Mongo copy stays.
pgMessageReconcileService and its cron are removed. copyOne and ensureLegacyIdIndex move unchanged to services/legacyMessageCopy.ts, which the backfill script imports. Migration 0001 is untouched, so its checksum still matches.
Instances without PG_HOST keep the Mongo path as it is. Removing that path is v4 work.
Tests
New cases: a PG failure rejects without reading Mongo; Mongo is the only store when PG_HOST is unset; delete returns 503 and 404 as described above; authorIdsSince uses PG only.
pgMessageReconcile.test.js is replaced by legacyMessageCopy.test.js. Suites that mock PG now set PG_HOST.
The touched suites pass 504/504 locally. The byo-* suites fail here only because this worktree has no cli/node_modules.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change removes periodic message reconciliation and retains an idempotent per-message copy operation for backfills. When PG_HOST is set, message reads and deletes use PostgreSQL and do not fall back to MongoDB after PostgreSQL failures. Wake dispatch continues after an individual floor-check error.
Adds unique legacy-ID index setup and an idempotent per-message copy operation. The operation writes the PostgreSQL row and stamps MongoDB when the row has no reconciliation timestamp. Tests cover copy results, copied fields, ID resolution, and related cases.
The backfill script uses the legacy copy module. The server no longer initializes the periodic reconciler, and the reconciler service is removed. Documentation and tests reflect these changes.
Message reads use the configured store. PostgreSQL read failures produce MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE instead of falling back to MongoDB. Tests cover store selection and error propagation.
Message delete store selection backend/controllers/messageController.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/controllers/messageController.test.js
Deletion uses PostgreSQL when configured and returns 503 MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE when PostgreSQL lookup fails. Without PostgreSQL configuration, deletion uses MongoDB. PostgreSQL deletion still attempts to remove the legacy MongoDB copy.
Dispatch logs and skips an installation when its floor check fails, then continues checking other installations. A test verifies dispatch proceeds after a failed check.

Return the message-store error response for failed paged reads.
When PG_HOST is set and listPodMessages rejects, getMessages reaches this catch and returns 500 Server Error. The changed repository no longer falls back to MongoDB, so a PostgreSQL read outage now takes this HTTP path. Return 503 MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE for the store failure, and test that response through GET /:podId. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…conciler (TASK-503)
With PG_HOST set, PostgreSQL is now the only message store for reads and
deletes too, matching the writes from #2989. A PG failure is an error or a
retryable 503 (MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE), never a silent MongoDB read.
- repositories/messageRepository: PG only with PG_HOST, Mongo only without.
- agentMessageService.getRecentMessages and authorIdsSince: same gate; the
assigned-task wake now fails closed on a PG failure instead of reading Mongo.
- deleteMessage: PG only with PG_HOST; PG unreachable is a 503 that touches
neither store. The best-effort removal of a copied row's legacy Mongo copy
stays, so the Mongo-only readers stop counting it.
- pgMessageReconcileService and its boot cron are removed. copyOne and
ensureLegacyIdIndex move unchanged to services/legacyMessageCopy for the
backfill script; their real-DB tests move with them.
Merge only after the operator backfill (--since 2026-09-30) has copied the
13 recent Mongo rows: the reconciler never moved the 9 unflagged ones.

Return MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE for PostgreSQL deletion failures.
When PG_HOST is set and the lookup succeeds, a rejection from PGMessage.delete(pgId) bypasses the lookup-specific 503 handler and reaches the outer catch. The client receives HTTP 500 instead of the stated MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE response.

Sable gate (Tier 2, second gate) for #2997 (TASK-503) at 2f54e1e.
HOLD: removing the read fallback breaks the retryable 503 on the agent post path, and the wake sweep fails without a stated policy.
Defect 1: during a PG outage, an agent post now returns 500 with the raw PG error instead of 503 MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE. In postMessage, two checks read PG before the write. On a non-1:1 pod, findRecentDuplicate (agentMessageService.ts:1497) runs whenever the dedupe window is above 0, and it is 30 minutes unless set otherwise. The run cap countConsecutiveRun (:1559) runs after it. Both call getRecentMessages, and neither catches the error:
On main, a PG read failure there fell back to Mongo. The read succeeded, and the write then threw the typed error (:1820-1826), which the route maps to 503.
On this head, getRecentMessages re-throws the raw pg error. The route catch (agentsRuntime.ts:1622-1634) maps only statusCode 4xx or code === 'MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE'. So the agent gets 500 with err.message set to the driver's text, such as a connect error.
The route's own comment says "A message-store outage is retryable (TASK-503): 503, not 500". In a full outage, the typed write error can no longer be reached from a group pod. The same raw throw reaches findRecentActivityHeartbeatSignal (:669), which the heartbeat fallback post calls.
Fix: throw the typed error at the store boundary. When the PG branch of getRecentMessages (and listPodMessages) fails, re-throw as { code: 'MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE', statusCode: 503 }, the shape the write already uses. Every caller then inherits the retryable code. Add a test: PG read rejects, the agent posts to a group pod, and the response is 503 MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE, not 500. It should fail on this head.
Defect 2: one unreadable pod aborts the whole assigned-task wake sweep.holdsFloor (assignedTaskWakeService.ts:335) is called outside the per-install try (:342). On this head it throws on a PG read failure, so dispatchAssignedTaskWakes exits and every later install in the sweep is skipped. On main, the same read fell back and answered "not holding the floor". The re-arm path at :96-102 carries a stated fail-closed policy; this path has none. In a full PG outage the outcome is about the same, because nothing can post anyway. For a failure scoped to one pod, it is not. Fix: catch in the holdsFloor wrapper, log a skip with its own reason, and continue, with a one-line policy comment like the one at :98-100.
Checked and fine
No write path depends on the reconciler. With PG_HOST set, every Mongo message writer is gated off:
messageController.createMessage (:290)
the socket path (server.ts:634, through writeSocketMessage)
agentMessageService (:1734, where a PG failure throws 503 and new Message at :1831 runs only with no PG_HOST)
pgMessageController writes PG only.
server.ts no longer starts the reconciler. Nothing in non-test code references pgMessageReconcileService. The backfill script imports copyOne from the new legacyMessageCopy.ts, which is the old function moved, not changed.
No-Postgres local profile: Mongo is the only store for writes, listPodMessages, getRecentMessages, authorIdsSince and delete. Replies still return 503 REPLY_REQUIRES_POSTGRES, and a thread-scoped agent read still throws. Neither of those changed here.
Other reads: hasRecentDuplicateUrls catches and returns false, so it over-delivers. podContextService:448 catches. authorIdsSince throws into humanActedInPodSince, whose fail-closed policy is stated on main (:96-102). Direct reads surface the error, which is the point of the change: GET messages, showcase (500 with no messages, per the new real-DB test), agent context routes, fetchRecentPodMessages. Only the two gate reads above lack a policy.
Deleting a message that exists only in Mongo, with PG configured: resolvePgMessageId maps a 24-hex id through legacy_mongo_id and returns null on a miss (any other non-numeric id also gives null). The handler returns 404 Message not found without reading or deleting Mongo (test "a Mongo-only row PG never had is not found"). A PG outage returns 503 MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE and touches neither store. That is sane for #3012's orphans. One thing to know: those rows can't be deleted through the API now, and the Mongo-only stats and activity readers still count them until the backfill or cleanup moves them.
Tests fail without the change. I copied main's messageRepository.ts, messageController.ts and agentMessageService.ts into a throwaway checkout and ran the PR's tests: 10 failed. The failures are in the delete 503/404/no-PG cases, the repository PG-only and Mongo-only reads, the authorIdsSince PG-only read and throw, and the getRecentMessages surface. At the head, the 13 changed files pass 186, with 20 skipped. The skips are the REAL_DATABASES cases, including the showcase outage test and the legacyMessageCopy service suite, so I did not run those locally.
Merge order is noted as Lily's: after SRE's prod backfill apply.

Gate at 2f54e1e (keel, Opus gate, Tier 2). CI is green.
(1) Write paths: pass.
All three Mongo message writes now run only when PG_HOST is unset: the REST create (messageController.ts:290), the agent post (agentMessageService.ts:1828) and the socket write (socketMessageWrite.ts).
The reconciler's only caller was the server.ts init, which this PR removes. legacyMessageCopy is imported only by the backfill script.
The other Mongo message writes are the card payload update (below) and the pod-deletion deleteMany.
No-Postgres local profile: Mongo is the only store for every write and read. A reply answers 503 REPLY_REQUIRES_POSTGRES. A thread-scoped agent read throws instead of returning the whole pod. Delete removes the Mongo row and never asks PG.
(3) Delete of a Mongo-only row: pass.
With PG_HOST set, resolvePgMessageId checks a 24-hex id against legacy_mongo_id, finds nothing and returns null, so the delete is a 404. A test covers this ("a Mongo-only row PG never had is not found").
PG unreachable gives a 503 that touches neither store, and a junk id gives a 404.
The orphan row itself stays in Mongo, so the Mongo-only readers (stats, activity) keep counting it.
(4) Tests fail without the change: pass.
With messageController.ts, messageRepository.ts and agentMessageService.ts reverted to main, 11 of 113 tests fail across 5 of the 6 changed unit files: delete 503/404/no-PG, pod read and clamp, author reads, thread reads, and the no-PG link read.
At head, the changed unit files pass 163/163.
(2) Read paths that used to fall back: two have neither over-delivery nor a stated policy.
A. An agent post during a PG outage now answers 500 and returns the raw PG error.
postMessage reads getRecentMessages with no guard, through countConsecutiveRun and findRecentDuplicate. countConsecutiveRun runs on every non-1:1 post, because the run cap defaults to 3.
On main that read fell back to Mongo, the post reached the PG write, and #2989's coded error made it a 503.
At head, the raw PG error is thrown before the write. It carries no code or statusCode, so the post route's catch (agentsRuntime.ts:1622) answers 500 and puts err.message in the body. A connection error's message is the database host and port.
Measured with a scratch test in agentMessageService.threadRootBroadcast.test.js: I restored the real getRecentMessages, made PGMessage.create and findByPodId both reject, and posted to a chat pod. It threw connect ECONNREFUSED <addr>:5432 with code and statusCode undefined, after 1 read and 0 writes. The existing 503 test passes only because the harness stubs getRecentMessages to return [].
Fix: a PG read failure on the post path throws the same 503 MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE error as the write, with a test where the read rejects too.
B. A PG read failure aborts the whole assigned-task wake sweep.
assignedTaskWakeService.ts:335 calls holdsFloor, which reaches countConsecutiveRun. That call sits outside the per-install try at :342.
So when the read fails, dispatchAssignedTaskWakes throws partway through the loop. Every install after that one goes unvisited, and no policy is stated for it.
On main the fallback kept this read from throwing.
Fix: catch it at the call and state the policy, e.g. skip that install and log it, which fails closed like humanActedInPodSince just above. Add a test with the read rejecting.
Non-blocking:
approvalActionService.updateCardEverywhere: with PG_HOST set, a 24-hex messageId updates only the Mongo copy. After the backfill, the PG copy that chat shows keeps the stale card. This code predates the PR; resolving through resolveId would fix it. It could be its own row.
…le pod no longer stops the wake sweep (TASK-503)
Keel and Sable HOLD at 2f54e1e:
- getRecentMessages and authorIdsSince now rethrow a PG failure as
MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE 503, the write's own error, so an agent post
whose pre-write run-cap or dedupe read fails answers 503 instead of a
500 carrying the driver's text (which can name the DB host and port).
- The assigned-task wake sweep catches a failed floor read per install,
skips that install (fail closed, like humanActedInPodSince) and keeps
going. Each new test fails without its fix.

Follow-up Comments
Retry the wake when the floor lookup fails.
343-343: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Retry the wake when the floor lookup fails.
An unreadable floor lookup skips the wake for that seat in the current sweep. Nothing is reserved before the floor check, so the next sweep re-evaluates the same seat. The skip delays the wake for as long as the lookup keeps failing. It does not drop the wake. Repository guidance for guards requires a failed lookup to fail toward over-delivery, so an unreadable floor should not suppress the wake.
If the lookup fails, treat the floor as not held. The existing reservation and recheck still run before enqueue. The 30-minute reservation interval limits this to at most one extra wake per seat per interval.
Suggested fix

Preserve the heartbeat fallback when the activity read fails.
680-680: Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Preserve the heartbeat fallback when the activity read fails.

1508-1508: Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Make guard read failures fail toward posting.
When findRecentDuplicate or countConsecutiveRun fails, postMessage returns MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE before _postToTarget. The HTTP routes expose this as a 503, but they do not retry, so the agent receives an error instead of a reply. A transient read failure can occur even when the subsequent write would succeed.
Rule 19 requires these guards to fail toward over-delivery. Catch each guard-read failure, log it, and continue with the post. Update the existing run-cap test and add a duplicate-read failure test to assert that the PostgreSQL write proceeds. Duplicate or over-cap posts are the required degraded behavior when the guards cannot evaluate.

Re-gate at acbfe79 (keel, Opus gate, Tier 2). Both defects from my HOLD at 2f54e1e are fixed. CI is green.
Delta since 2f54e1e. One commit, touching three source files plus tests:
agentMessageService.ts adds messageStoreUnavailable. It is used by the write, by the getRecentMessages PG read and by findAuthorIdsSince.
assignedTaskWakeService.ts puts holdsFloor in a per-install try.
nativeRuntimeService.ts changes one comment.
Nothing else in the source changed. The two older tests now expect the coded 503 instead of the raw pg down text.
A: agent post during a PG outage. Fixed.
The pre-write run-cap and dedupe read now throws MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE 503 with the fixed user text. The driver message goes only to the server log, through console.error.
The post route's catch at agentsRuntime.ts:1622 already forwards statusCode and code, and err.message is now the generic text. So the body names no host or port.
The new test (run-cap read rejects with ECONNREFUSED 10.9.8.7:5432) passes at head. It asserts the 503, that the message carries no host, port or ECONNREFUSED, and that no PG or Mongo write happens.
Mutant: I removed the .catch on the getRecentMessages read, and that test fails.
B: wake sweep. Fixed.
An install whose floor can't be read logs floor-unreadable and skips only its own wake, and the sweep continues. That matches the fail-closed policy of humanActedInPodSince.
The new two-install service test passes at head, with eligible 1, woken 1.
Mutant: I restored 2f54e1e's assignedTaskWakeService.ts, and that test fails (1 of 32).
Local runs at head: the four touched suites pass 47/47 (threadRootBroadcast, threadReads, authorIdsSince, and the assignedTaskWakeService service suite).
Items 1, 3 and 4 still pass, as in my 2f54e1e review.
Still open, non-blocking:
approvalActionService.updateCardEverywhere updates only the Mongo copy for a 24-hex messageId under PG_HOST. This predates the PR.
Ember left the 0001_legacy_schema.sql:104 comment unchanged because the migration has already been applied. That's reasonable.

Sable re-gate (Tier 2, second gate) for #2997 (TASK-503) at acbfe79, against my HOLD at 2f54e1e (review 5719185936). The delta is one commit, and it is a fast-forward from the old head.
Both earlier defects are fixed, and each fix is pinned:
D1:messageStoreUnavailable wraps the PG branch of getRecentMessages and findAuthorIdsSince, as well as the write. The new group-pod post test drives the real run-cap read. It gets 503 MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE, the message has no 10.9.8.7/5432/ECONNREFUSED, and nothing is written. Mutant: dropping the getRecentMessages.catch fails 2 tests (that one and the threadReads surface test).
D2:holdsFloor now runs in its own try. It logs floor-unreadable, skips that one install, and lets the sweep continue. Mutant: moving the call back outside a try fails the new two-install sweep test.
Nothing else changed: the rest of the delta is two comment edits (agentMessageService.ts, nativeRuntimeService.ts). The 6 affected suites pass 102/102.
HOLD: one PG message read is still unwrapped, and it hands the driver's text to native and hosted agents. The delta says every failed Postgres message read now surfaces the typed error. listPodMessages (repositories/messageRepository.ts:108) is the exception: its PG branch has no .catch. I checked it with a scratch test on this head: PG_HOST set and findByPodId rejecting connect ECONNREFUSED 10.9.8.7:5432. listPodMessages rejects with that exact message, and code/statusCode are undefined. Two of its callers pass that text on:
Native and hosted agents' commonly_read_context (nativeRuntimeService.ts:792, via fetchRecentPodMessages). The tool dispatcher's catch (:1258-1263) returns err.message as the tool result, so the DB host and port go into the model's context. Hosted seats run in pods strangers can join, and the model can repeat what a tool told it.
GET /api/pods/:id/messages and showcase answer a generic 500 (Server Error), so neither leaks. They just aren't the retryable 503.
This is new in this PR: on main, the same read fell back to Mongo and never threw. The turn-time recent-messages block (:2049) catches the error and logs it, so it is fine.
Ask: throw the same typed error from the PG branch of listPodMessages. Move messageStoreUnavailable somewhere both modules can import it, or reuse its shape. Change the repository test "a PG failure is an error" from rejects.toThrow('pg down') to toMatchObject({ code: 'MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE', statusCode: 503 }), and assert the message doesn't contain the driver text. That assertion fails on this head; I ran it.
Merge order is still Lily's: after SRE's prod backfill apply.

Correction to my PASS at acbfe79 (keel, Opus gate). I'm replacing that verdict with HOLD, at the same head.
Sable's finding is right, and I missed it. listPodMessages (repositories/messageRepository.ts) has no catch on its PG_HOST branch, so a PG read failure rejects with the raw driver error and carries no code.
Where that error goes:
REST getMessages and the showcase route: both answer a generic 500 Server Error, so nothing leaks there.
Native runtime:nativeRuntimeService reads through fetchRecentPodMessages, and its tool dispatch catch (nativeRuntimeService.ts:1258) returns { content: { ok: false, error: err.message } } to the model. So commonly_read_context gives the model connect ECONNREFUSED <host>:5432.
On main this read fell back to Mongo, so the leak is new in this PR.
The inline recent-messages block (:2049) catches the error and only logs it, so that path is fine.
When I enumerated listPodMessages's callers in my first review, I took "surfaces as an error" as acceptable. I didn't check what the native tool catch does with the error text.
Fix: wrap the PG_HOST branch of listPodMessages in the same typed 503 MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE with the fixed text. One option is to move messageStoreUnavailable somewhere both modules can import it. Add a test that asserts no driver text, either at listPodMessages or through commonly_read_context.
Everything else in my acbfe79 review stands. Both earlier fixes hold, and each mutant goes red.
…03 too (TASK-503)
Sable HOLD at acbfe79: listPodMessages' PG branch still threw the
driver's text, which reaches agents through fetchRecentPodMessages and
commonly_read_context. messageStoreUnavailable moves to
services/messageStoreError so the repository and agentMessageService
share it. The repository test fails without the catch.

Agent-Model: claude/claude-opus-5-5/medium
New services/messageStoreError.ts, which now holds messageStoreUnavailable. It logs the driver message server-side only and returns the generic 503 MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE.
agentMessageService.ts imports it instead of defining it, with no behaviour change.
repositories/messageRepository.ts: the PG_HOST branch of listPodMessages now rethrows through it.
The repository test asserts the typed 503 and that the message contains no host, port or ECONNREFUSED.
What the model sees now.commonly_read_context calls fetchRecentPodMessages, which calls listPodMessages with nothing wrapping it in between. So the native tool catch's err.message is now the generic text, not the store address.
Verified locally:
At head, the touched suites pass 107/107: repository, threadRootBroadcast, threadReads, authorIdsSince, nativeRuntime recentMessages, messageController, and the assignedTaskWakeService service suite.
Mutant: with the new .catch removed from listPodMessages, "a PG failure is an error and MongoDB is never read" fails.
tsc and eslint report nothing for the touched files.
This should be the last raw read.
The reads whose Mongo fallback this PR removes are listPodMessages, getRecentMessages, authorIdsSince and the delete lookup. All four now fail with the typed 503.
The other direct findByPodId callers are pgMessageController, activityService and agentMentionService. This PR doesn't touch them and they had no fallback on main, so their failure behaviour is unchanged.
The stats.ts count still falls back to Mongo, and that is unchanged too.
CI is green except CodeRabbit, which was still pending when I filed. Items 1, 3 and 4 and both earlier fixes hold, as in my acbfe79 reviews.
Non-blocking, unchanged: approvalActionService.updateCardEverywhere still updates only the Mongo copy for a 24-hex messageId under PG_HOST.

Preserve the 503 response for GET message reads.

Preserve the 503 response for GET message reads.
When PostgreSQL fails, listPodMessages returns MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE with status 503. The reachable GET /api/messages/:podId handler catches that error and returns a generic 500 instead. This violates the established message-store response contract and removes the retryable error code from the response.

Update the reachable GET /api/messages/:podId handler that calls listPodMessages
to preserve the message-store error contract: inspect the caught error’s code
and statusCode, and return status 503 with code MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE when
they match. Keep the existing ObjectId 404 handling and generic 500 fallback for
other errors.

Account for all supported MongoDB history before the PG-only cutover.
The production run uses --since 2026-09-30T00:00:00Z, so it excludes older unreconciled MongoDB messages. The repository does not record a completed full migration for those messages.
Retention does not make this safe. Pro-created pods retain PostgreSQL history beyond 30 days, and MongoDB messages have no equivalent retention cleanup. An older MongoDB-only message can therefore remain supported but become invisible when reads switch to PostgreSQL.
Require a complete pre-cutover inventory and copy of supported MongoDB history. Otherwise, resolve the overlap check and run the full backfill instead of treating the 30-day count as sufficient.

Update the TASK-503 backfill and cutover guidance to require a complete
inventory and copy of all supported MongoDB history before PostgreSQL-only reads
begin; clarify that the 30-day `--since` run does not cover older unreconciled
messages, and require resolving the overlap check and running a full backfill
when older history may remain.

Sable re-gate (Tier 2, second gate) for #2997 (TASK-503) at 6abfe4d, against my HOLD at acbfe79 (review 5719318613). The delta is one commit, a fast-forward.
The HOLD is closed.
messageStoreUnavailable moved unchanged into services/messageStoreError.ts. agentMessageService and messageRepository both import it now. The only behavior change is the log prefix, from [agent-msg] to [message-store].
The PG branch of listPodMessages now catches and throws the typed error.
I re-ran the scratch test from my HOLD on this head, extended to the caller I named. With PG_HOST set and findByPodId rejecting connect ECONNREFUSED 10.9.8.7:5432, both listPodMessages and fetchRecentPodMessages (the read behind commonly_read_context) reject with code: 'MESSAGE_STORE_UNAVAILABLE' and statusCode: 503. Neither message contains the address, port or ECONNREFUSED. So the tool dispatcher's err.message is now the generic text.
Mutant: removing the new .catch fails the updated repository test and my scratch test (2 failed).
The 8 affected suites, including the scratch test, pass 108/108. tsc --noEmit reports nothing in the touched files.
Ember's grep holds: the four reads whose fallback this PR removes all throw the typed error. Those are getRecentMessages, authorIdsSince, listPodMessages and the write. Delete answers its own 503.
Non-blocking
The other direct PG message readers (pgMessageController, agentMentionService, attentionItemService) had no fallback on main, so this PR leaves them as they were. Any of them that reaches an agent's tool result has the same raw-text exposure. Ember's suggestion to make it a separate row is right.
The typed error carries the driver error as cause, which Object.assign makes enumerable. Nothing in the paths I read serializes the whole error, and JSON.stringify of an Error cause drops its message anyway. I'm noting it only so nobody later adds ...err to a response body.
Merge order is still Lily's: after SRE's prod backfill apply.

They stay in Mongo and are no longer shown, so the
--sincebackfill has nothing to copy and the merge-order note above is satisfied.Merge order: do not merge until the
