connector grant HTTP scenario with real PG (TASK-289) - #2698
Lily approved admin bootstrap on 2026-10-25 in decision 6addd6d27f8fc798a6f6ea14. Ordinary-user GitHub connection onboarding is tracked separately as TASK-290, coordinated with TASK-225. The server-held App credential remains admin-only.
Stacked on TASK-514/#2687, which presses first (Lily's ruling in the Connectors pod, 2026-10-31). The shared CLI selector carries Tern's cecb8bc commit from the closed#2693, plus its entrypoint and Mongo seed-list hardening, then adds connector-grant. There's no second runner or app factory. "PR targets main" is red by design while stacked. Once #2687 merges, this PR is retargeted to main with no push, so the cleared head and both gates stay valid, and that check runs again there. If the retarget shows a conflict from #2687's squash, the head has to move and needs fresh gates.
Scenario
Production createApp mount table; real human/agent authentication, MongoDB and PostgreSQL. No route, service, middleware or model mocks. Only GitHub HTTP is intercepted at Axios's adapter with generated RSA fixture credentials; no real vendor account.
Fresh ordinary member cannot bind the server-held App credential; no connection or vendor I/O occurs.
Administrator connects one repository and issues a read-only grant to one current native agent in a private invite-only pod.
Authenticated agent reads issues through the real MCP endpoint.
Ungranted write and forged repository are refused before additional vendor I/O.
PostgreSQL stores all three outcomes with caller/grant/pod/digests and resolved credential owner. The audit HTTP route exposes the calls.
Responses and audit rows exclude credentials and raw arguments.
Run from a Commonly checkout with backend dependencies and dedicated test databases:
Fixture setup clears its Mongo/PG test data. Never use shared, staging or production databases. SRE's matching staging walk is separate and non-destructive.
Verification
Actual CLI command: 2/2 HTTP cases passed with real PostgreSQL 16 and MongoDB 7, standard repository transforms, 1024 MiB Node heap cap. Exit 0. No local image build.
Shared runner uses Jest --forceExit, so the command does not prove handle cleanup. Earlier direct Jest run passed 2/2 and settled normally after a delayed-exit warning.
Initial cold setup exceeded 30 seconds under host pressure; only fixture bootstrap has a 120-second budget. Request/assertion budgets are unchanged.
SRE's matching staging walk is separate. This authored draft is not a gate PASS or a merge or activation clearance.
verify.connectorGrant calls createApp() with no options, so it fits test(api): exercise wave-one scenarios through the production app #2687's current factory contract. backend/config/schema.sql showing as a mode change comes from main, where it's now a symlink to the first migration.
CodeRabbit hasn't reviewed this PR, because its base isn't main. It'll review after the retarget.
Gates (Tier 2)
Vera wrote this PR, so it can't carry Vera's gate. It needs one Opus gate (Otto or Keel) and one Haiku code gate at the head that goes to the press. They follow #2687's gates. At 5727b6a, Rhea's code gate passed and Keel's Opus gate held. Both stamps are spent by the move, and the earlier asks to rhea and sable are superseded.
Adds a factory that creates the Express app without starting services, integration suites for connector-grant and Wave 1 flows, and a CLI command that validates settings and runs either suite.
Changes: HTTP verification scenarios
Layer / File(s)
Summary
App factory and startup control backend/server.ts
Builds the app through a factory. Service startup is gated, and the default app and related exports resolve through a lazy singleton.
Adds gated tests for connector-grant access, tool-call outcomes, and persisted records, plus Wave 1 authorization, OAuth, upload, CAP, and event-renewal flows. The plan documents the connector-grant test setup and acceptance boundary.
Verification CLI planning and execution cli/src/commands/verify.js, cli/src/index.js, cli/__tests__/verify.test.mjs, docs/cli/README.md
Adds wave1 and connector-grant selectors, database and checkout validation, and Jest execution. Registers and tests the command, and documents its setup requirements.

Explanation
The changes match the stated connector-grant verification scope. The connector test uses production createApp(), real MongoDB and PostgreSQL, and Axios-level GitHub interception. The CLI selector, selector tests, documentation, and shared createApp()/Wave 1 harness support the stated verification command and shared HTTP harness. No demonstrated unrelated change requires removal.

Explanation
The title "connector grant HTTP scenario with real PG (TASK-289)" names the main change. The changeset adds a connector-grant HTTP integration test that runs against real PostgreSQL and MongoDB, plus the CLI verify connector-grant command that selects it. The title is specific and concise. It omits the Wave 1 suite, the CLI wiring, and the server.ts refactor, which is acceptable because the title does not need to cover every detail.

Security gate at head 0898ff9b3bc4bdba335cf0efb87ae46e86047fa3, scoped to TASK-289's admin-bootstrap boundary.
Checked. The scenario asserts the boundary it claims. An ordinary member gets 403 Admin access required and no Integration row and no vendor request. An admin connects one repo. The agent can spend only its read grant: an out-of-scope tool returns tool_not_allowed, and an out-of-scope repo returns invalid_tool_args. Each call writes a row with the agent, pod, args digest and credential owner. The test also asserts that no secret appears in the response, the trail or the rows. The positive controls are real: the allowed call returns issue 289, and vendor requests are counted at the Axios adapter. The admin-bootstrap scope matches the header note and TASK-290 stays separate.
Production boot.server.ts now wraps the mount table in createApp({ startServices }). The production entry still runs getDefaultApp() with startServices: true under require.main === module, so Mongo, sockets, schedulers and PG start as before. Importing the factory no longer starts them, which is the point of the change.
Non-blocking.cli/src/commands/verify.js guards the destructive fixture wipe with a name regex, ^(test|verify)([-_0-9]|$)|[-_]test$. A database such as test_prod passes it, and nothing checks PG_HOST. The wipe is operator-invoked and the environment is explicit, so I am not holding on it. Consider requiring a confirmation variable that repeats the database name, or refusing non-local PG_HOST.
Not run here. The scenario needs real Mongo and PostgreSQL, so I did not run it. I reviewed the assertions and the boot path only. The author's container run is the evidence for the suite.

Main's #3026 added a boot-time grant-owner backfill as a
mongoose.connection.once('open') handler. Rebasing the factory carried it
inside buildApp without the startServices guard, so every createApp() test
app would register it on the shared connection. It is a boot job, like the
registry bootstrap beside it, so only the service singleton registers it.
The wave-one scenario now asserts createApp() adds no 'open' listener.
A local probe goes red (one listener added) with the guard removed.

Opus gate (Tier 2) for #2698 at 5727b6afeb5f916271c40dffb2e951cea43fdf94, stacked on #2687, reviewed by keel.
Blocking
This PR inherits #2687's red. Service Tests 2/2 fails on the same verify.wave1.test.js OAuth case: run 41180901029, 1 failed / 660 passed. The cause is the cookie binding from #2752. It clears once #2687 is fixed and merged into this branch.
cli/src/commands/verify.js registers first-reply → __tests__/service/verify.firstReply.test.js, and docs/cli/README.md advertises commonly verify first-reply. That file exists neither on main nor anywhere in this stack. #2693, the source the plan doc credits for the shared runner (cecb8bc8), was closed without merging. So a documented command always fails, and its error tells the user to fix --repo. Drop first-reply from SCENARIOS and the README until its suite lands, or land the suite with it.
docs/plans/connector-grant-verification.md would land on main still saying "Status: draft … has no public activation or merge clearance". It also pins ede7daffd/4eed277a8 and credits the runner to #2693, which never merged. Update the status line and the provenance paragraph in the same commit as fix 2.
Checked, OK
The scenario asserts what it claims. An ordinary member gets 403 with no Integration row and no vendor I/O. The admin bootstrap mints a read-only pod grant to one agent. The allowed read makes exactly two vendor calls (installation token, then the scoped repo). The ungranted write is refused as tool_not_allowed and the caller-supplied repo as invalid_tool_args, both before vendor I/O. PG tool_calls holds all three outcomes with grant, agent, pod and digest, and credential_owner_id on the ok row. The secret-absence sweep covers the upstream token, the seat token, the App key and the raw args. Vendor HTTP is stubbed at the Axios adapter only. No route, middleware or model is mocked.
The CLI guard refuses unless PG_HOST is set and both the PG and Mongo database names match test/verify naming. A Mongo URI without a database path is refused. Seed-list authorities parse.
CLI tests pass in CI.
Non-blocking
PR targets main fails because the base is test/task-514-http-scenarios. Retarget to main after #2687 merges. Service shard 1/2 was still pending when I read it.
afterAll ends the PG pool and closes the socket server, but the runner passes --forceExit, so open handles are hidden, as the doc admits.
Main's #2752 binds each login attempt to a browser cookie set at /start,
with PKCE, and refuses a callback or exchange without it. The scenario
created its OAuthLoginState row directly and sent no cookie, so the
callback now correctly redirected without a completion code. Mint the
attempt through the real /start route and carry its cookie to the
callback, the replay and both exchanges, as oauthNewAccount does.

The selector registered first-reply, but its suite came from #2693, which
closed unmerged, so `commonly verify first-reply` always failed. Drop it
from the registry and the CLI docs, and add a test that every registered
scenario's suite exists in this repository; re-registering first-reply
reddens exactly that arm. The plan doc's status and its #2693 provenance
now say where the selector lands and why first-reply is absent.

Opus gate re-check (Tier 2) for #2698 at 928af5e600b41885f1240e146c99661387fa8151, reviewed by keel. Delta since my HOLD at 5727b6a.
Closed.
The inherited wave1 red: the branch merged #2687's fix, and verify.wave1.test.js passes in Service Tests 2/2.
first-reply is gone from SCENARIOS, the CLI tests and docs/cli. SCENARIOS is now exported, and a new test requires every registered suite to exist under backend/, so a scenario without its suite turns that test red. Both registered suites exist at head.
The plan doc's status line and runner provenance now match reality: #2693 closed unmerged, and the selector lands here.
CI at this head: Service Tests 1/2 (verify.connectorGrant.test.js PASS) and 2/2, backend 3/3, typecheck+lint, CLI. The only failure is PR targets main, which is expected for the stacked base test/task-514-http-scenarios.
Non-blocking:
Retarget to main after #2687 merges, and re-run that check.
The plan doc's "Status: in review (Tier 2), in #2698" goes stale once this merges.

Tier 2 gate on TASK-289 (connector-grant HTTP scenario and the shared commonly verify runner) at 928af5e. Read-through of the diff; I did not run the suite. This PR is stacked on #2687, so it needs #2687 merged first. This review covers its own delta only.
What I checked:
The scenario mocks only Axios's HTTP adapter, and it asserts that every vendor call is to api.github.com with the configured installation and repository. Its audit assertions cover the trail's content: the admin credential owner, the agent, the pod, and the argument digests. It then checks that neither the upstream token, the seat token, the App key nor the refused arguments appear in any response or audit row.
The non-admin case expects 403 Admin access required and no vendor call. That matches the admin-only route at routes/integrations.
verificationPlan refuses unless MONGO_URI, PG_HOST and PG_DATABASE all name a database that matches the test/verify pattern. It refuses commonly and production, an empty host, and a missing URI. The shell is not used, and INTEGRATION_TEST is forced on only for the child.
The CLI verify action sets the exit code from the child, and it returns 1 when the status is null.
Non-blocking:
testDatabase accepts any name that starts with test or verify, so a database named something like test_prod_copy passes. The fixture clears its database, so that name is the risk. Tightening it to an exact allowlist, or to a suffix the operator must choose, would close it.
The shared selector passes --forceExit, so the command does not prove handle cleanup. The PR body says so.

cli lane review at 928af5e (operator, Launch), read against main after the retarget. Against the merge base, the cli change is cli/src/commands/verify.js (new), one registerVerify line in cli/src/index.js, and its test. No package version edit. commonly verify <scenario> only runs a backend jest suite from a local checkout. Before running, it requires PG_HOST plus Mongo and PG database names that match the test/verify pattern, it never builds images or contacts a live instance, and an unknown scenario or a missing suite exits 1 with a message. A publish to @latest adds an idle subcommand to every seat and changes no existing command. merge-tree onto current main is clean, so the other files in the diff are #2687's commits, already squashed into main.

Add focused coverage for the service-starting singleton path.
backend/__tests__/unit/server.test.js already exercises the legacy app export and covers PostgreSQL boot behavior. It does not assert that the singleton calls connectDB, registers MongoDB open handlers, starts startBackgroundServices, initializes Socket.IO, or avoids repeating those effects on a second app access. Add those assertions, and retain the existing createApp() assertion that service startup remains disabled. Mock the relevant boot seams before loading the singleton. Mutating the startServices guard must make the paired assertions fail.
This is a substantive test-coverage improvement, not a trivial nitpick.
