fix(oauth): keep login attempts bound through completion - #2752
Tier 2 · TASK-557 · follows #2750 (included as parent commit; land #2750 first, then refresh this branch).
Keep each OAuth login attempt bound through completion. The API sets a per-attempt HttpOnly host-only cookie; callback and completion exchange both check its nonce hash. GitHub and Google receive a fresh S256 challenge and the matching server-held verifier. The frontend includes API credentials when exchanging the one-time completion code. Parallel starts use independent cookie names.
Design and rollout:
Add optional browserNonceHash and select:false pkceVerifier fields to the short-lived OAuthLoginState model. Existing users, links, tokens and sessions need no migration or backfill.
Pending attempts created before this version require a fresh login start. Deploy frontend and backend together; do not add a mixed-version fallback. Existing sessions remain valid.
HTTPS cookies use __Host-, Secure, HttpOnly, SameSite=Lax and Path=/, without Domain. Local HTTP uses the unprefixed cookie. The completion request supports separate frontend/API origins on the same site, as used by production/staging and local ports. An arbitrary cross-site frontend/API pairing would need a separate cookie delivery design; it is not claimed here.
The API holds the verifier, excludes it from ordinary model selection, and removes it on completed callbacks. The binding cookie is cleared after successful exchange; abandoned attempts and cookies expire in ten minutes. One-time callback and exchange claims remain atomic.
Validation (Node 22):
Real MongoDB 7.0.14 via MongoMemoryServer: new HTTP suite 13/13; controller 50/50; signup-source HTTP 3/3. Real routes, state and user models, CORS policy and session JWT are exercised. Only external provider transport, email and background community join are stubbed. Provider stubs independently check the S256 challenge/verifier contract.
Frontend OAuth suite 14/14, including credentials on completion and invite/deep-link behavior.
Removing the browser-hash query predicates fails 4 new HTTP cases; removing verifier forwarding fails 3. Restored HTTP suite 13/13.
Scoped production ESLint: zero errors, two existing warnings (unused jwt and TSX extension rule). git diff --check passes.
This is HTTP/CORS plus component proof, not a signed-in vendor/browser walk. Required CI, CodeRabbit and both exact-head Rhea/Sable PR reviews remain required before press. No live account changes, provider calls or deployment performed.

Walkthrough
OAuth start creates browser-bound state and an S256 PKCE challenge. The callback validates the state-specific cookie and verifier before resolving provider identity. Credential exchange requires the matching cookie, and the frontend sends the exchange request with credentials.
OAuth state stores a browser nonce hash and PKCE verifier. OAuth start sets a state-specific cookie and sends an S256 challenge. Tests cover state creation and start behavior.
The callback requires a matching cookie and valid, unexpired state with a PKCE verifier. Provider token requests include the verifier. Tests cover callback rejection, linked and unlinked identities, and independent OAuth attempts.
The exchange handler requires the matching cookie when claiming an exchange code and clears the cookie after user checks succeed. The frontend exchange request enables withCredentials. Tests cover successful, rejected, and repeated exchange attempts.
These test updates align OAuth integration coverage with the new browser-binding flow, with no actionable merge-blocking risk identified.

The exchange response uses Express res.clearCookie, which emits Expires=Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 GMT. The current assertion checks only the empty value, so it would pass if expiry were omitted.

Accepted the grouped cookie-expiry test suggestion in review 5645954210. The successful exchange now asserts both the empty binding cookie and its past Expires date. Focused real-Mongo HTTP suite passes 13/13. This follow-up changes one test assertion; production is unchanged.
The browser binding made /callback and /exchange refuse requests that
lack the cm-oauth cookie set at /start. accountDeletion's exchange call
had no cookie and its fake res had no clearCookie; oauthNewAccount never
carried the start cookie to callback or exchange.

Tier 2 Opus gate for TASK-557 at 58574d6. The head contains main, and CI is green.
I ran the new suite plus the controller, signup-source, account-deletion and new-account suites under Node 22 with real MongoDB: 104 passed, 2 skipped (oauthNewAccount is gated on INTEGRATION_TEST).
Bound completion. The callback refuses a missing, wrong, duplicate or malformed cookie before it claims the row and before any provider call (oauthCallback, the readBrowserHash gate and browserNonceHash in the claim filter). The exchange looks up the pending row, checks the cookie for that row's state, and only then claims, so a refusal from another browser consumes nothing. The round-trip test asserts exchangedAt stays null after two refused exchanges, and the callback cases assert the state is unconsumed and the provider is never called.
Can't be forged or skipped. The nonce is 32 random bytes, and only its sha256 is stored. state must be 48 hex characters before it is used in a cookie name, and exactly one matching cookie is required. On HTTPS the name carries __Host-, so a sibling subdomain can't plant one. A row without a hash can't match either claim filter, which pins pre-deploy attempts as refused. The compare is a Mongo equality on the hash, not a JS string compare. A timing leak there would reveal bits of a hash of a 256-bit nonce, not the nonce, so timingSafeEqual isn't needed.
Legit flows. With the cookie threaded through, the controller suite (50/50) covers sign-in, new signup, linking an existing verified-email account, the signup ref kept on a new account and not set on an existing one, the invite gate, and the bot-row refusal. signupSourceHttp (3/3) carries attribution through the callback and ignores a forged signupSource on replay.
Generic refusal. The callback redirects with oauthError=state_invalid. The exchange returns 400 EXCHANGE_INVALID with the same text as an expired code. Neither carries state or identity.
The test bites. These mutations each went red alone, with the tree restored clean after each run:
callback gate plus its claim predicate removed: 3 of 13 fail (missing, wrong and duplicate cookie);
exchange pre-check plus its claim predicate removed: 2 of 13 fail (both provider round trips).
Non-blocking:
The body still says "follows #2750 (included as parent commit; land #2750 first…)". That stopped being true at the rebase, so please refresh it.
PKCE goes beyond this row's ask. It is disclosed and tested against stubs only. A real GitHub and Google sign-in after deploy is the only proof that both providers accept code_verifier, so put it in the walk.
During the rolling update, a start on an old pod followed by a callback on a new one fails closed. A start on a new pod finished on an old one completes unbound. This lasts only for the rollout window.
A binding cookie is cleared only on a successful exchange. A callback refused for email_unverified, team_only or invitation_required leaves its cookie until the 10-minute expiry.
Callback and exchange both require the per-attempt cookie. The cookie name is derived from the 48-hex state, and its 64-hex nonce is compared by SHA-256 hash in the atomic claim. A missing, wrong, or duplicate cookie is refused before any provider call and before the state is consumed (oauthBrowserBinding tests).
The exchange pre-lookup on exchangeCode only reads; the single-use claim is still the atomic findOneAndUpdate with browserNonceHash in the filter. A replayed code does not mint a second session.
The PKCE verifier is select:false, is sent to the provider only after the atomic claim, and is unset on a completed callback via stateRow.save(). Legacy rows without a verifier or nonce fail closed.
Provider contract: GitHub's changelog (2025-07-14) accepts S256 and requires code_verifier on the token exchange, and the client secret is still sent. Google's S256 contract is documented. Both match the code.
The only caller of /api/auth/oauth/exchange is V2OAuthComplete, which now sends credentials. No other client needs changing.
Non-blocking notes:
An abandoned callback (provider error or email refusal after the claim) leaves pkceVerifier in the row until the 10-minute expiry. It is select:false and single-use, so this is hygiene, not a leak.
The cookie prefix follows req.protocol. If a proxy ever hides https from Express, start and callback still agree, but the cookie name changes. Confirm trust proxy is set on the deployed API.
No live provider walk was run, which the PR body already says.
Header SHA moves to a6058f3. The only commit since 67dd25b (#2752, OAuth)
touches no cited file.
Row 38: "needs a person" now cites the Needs-you queue (V2ActivityPage.tsx:1244,
fed by the decision-queue route). The demo seed cite (activityService.ts:1416)
is gone. "Finished" is added as a failing clause: the board status is projected
at activityService.ts:274, but the page never reads it.
Row 39: the FAQ 6 premise sits in the fixed question, so the row says so.
Fix item 6 targets the answer's "we agree" (landing-faq.json:24), not the
question. The Not-scored note now says a declarative premise inside a question
is scored.

Main's #2752 binds each login attempt to a browser cookie set at /start,
with PKCE, and refuses a callback or exchange without it. The scenario
created its OAuthLoginState row directly and sent no cookie, so the
callback now correctly redirected without a completion code. Mint the
attempt through the real /start route and carry its cookie to the
callback, the replay and both exchanges, as oauthNewAccount does.
