ci(seats): run the seats package tests, and fix the HOME check that broke under /home/node - #2763
CI runs the seats package tests.packages/seats carries 192 node:test cases, and no workflow ran them. tool-tests runs the CLI's jest suite, whose roots stop at cli/, so the only seats coverage in CI was the CLI's boundary and tarball test. One step is added after the CLI steps: cd packages/seats && npm test. The package has no dependencies, so there is no install.
scrubPath also drops PATH entries under a HOME's resolved path (Rhea's HOLD at a66757c). When HOME is reached through a symlink, PATH can carry the resolved spelling. macOS /var → /private/var is one example, and npm builds node_modules/.bin entries from the real cwd. env.js compared entries against HOME exactly as written, so those entries reached the run, and they lead to the real home. It now scrubs against both spellings of each home.
The valet-env leak check matches a whole path, not a substring. Under HOME=/home/node, npm's /home/node_modules/.bin matched the substring check. That entry is outside HOME, and env.js is right to keep it.
Who the scrub gap reaches today
It only applies when HOME, or a path under it, sits behind a symlink, and no seat on main hits it today. Nothing in cli/src or backend calls prepareRunEnv. Its only callers are the valet runs on the unmerged Jellymoon branch. On the fleet host, HOME is /Users/xcjsam, which is not a symlink. It would reach a run whose host HOME, or baseEnv.HOME, is a symlinked path, such as a temp-dir home on macOS.
The new CI step is what exposed it. npm's ancestor PATH entries put the resolved path in front of the check.
Time the new step adds
On the real runner at a66757c, the step took about 9 s: job 121361000048, 02:02:59Z → 02:03:08Z, duration_ms 8,614. In a 3-CPU node:22-bookworm container it takes about 10.3 s.
Verification
At 402c0df, in a node:22-bookworm container, with npm test in each layout:
layout
result
runner: user runner, HOME=/home/runner, workspace /home/runner/work/commonly/commonly/packages/seats
192 pass
HOME=/home/node, workspace under it
192 pass
macOS shape: /h → /p/h, HOME=/h/node, workspace under it
192 pass
mutant: the realpath scrub removed, macOS shape
2 fail: Rhea's valet-env failure (PATH leaks the real HOME path: /p/h/node/work/seats/node_modules/.bin…) and the new symlink test
…roke under /home/node
The 191 node:test cases in packages/seats ran in no workflow: tool-tests
runs the CLI's jest suite, whose roots stop at cli/. Add the step.
valet-env asserted `!value.includes(REAL_HOME)` on every child env value.
Under HOME=/home/node, npm's own PATH entry /home/node_modules/.bin
matches that substring though it sits outside HOME, and env.js rightly
keeps it. The check now matches HOME only as a whole path segment. It
never failed on the GitHub runner (HOME=/home/runner); it failed in
node:22 containers.

Gate at a66757c on #2763 (CI runs the seats node:test suite; the valet-env leak check now matches whole paths).
HOLD: the new step fails in the layout GitHub Actions uses.
The tool-tests job runs in /home/runner/work/<repo>/<repo> with HOME=/home/runner, so the workspace is inside HOME. npm test puts every ancestor's node_modules/.bin on PATH: <ws>/packages/seats/node_modules/.bin, <ws>/node_modules/.bin, and so on up to /home/runner/node_modules/.bin. Those entries are inside HOME. The valet-env child inherits PATH, so the whole-path check still flags them.
Reproduced with a stand-in layout: HOME=$S/node, a copy of the head's packages/seats at $HOME/work/seats-head, then HOME=$S/node npm test.
Head, npm test: 190 pass, 1 fail. PATH leaks the real HOME path: …/seats-head/node_modules/.bin:…/node/node_modules/.bin:…
Same workspace, node --test "test/**/*.test.js" run directly: 191 of 191 pass.
Workspace outside HOME, npm test at the head: all green.
The container runs in the PR body pass because their workspace sits outside HOME, which is the opposite of the runner layout. "Never red on the GitHub runner" does not cover this, because the step is new and has never run there.
Fix options, the author's call:
Run node --test "test/**/*.test.js" in the step instead of npm test. That stops npm adding ancestor .bin entries. The runner's own PATH may hold other HOME-internal entries I can't see from here, so check it on the runner.
Keep npm test, and have the check ignore PATH entries npm builds. A PATH entry is not a home-directory leak in the sense the check guards.
Settle it on a real runner: dispatch tests.yml on this branch and read the seats step in the CLI, MCP and hosted runtime tests job.
What holds: the namesPath regex is correct on the cases I probed. /home/node, /home/node/.x and a PATH member under HOME are flagged. /home/node_modules/.bin, /home/nodes/x and /home/node.bak are not. The step's placement after test:temp-cleanup is fine, with Node 22 and no install needed.

Escape the Windows separator in the regex character class.
On Windows, sep is \ and delimiter is ;. The resulting class is [\;], which matches the semicolon but not the backslash. A value beneath C:\Users\alice therefore passes both leak assertions when its next character is \. Escape the boundary characters before building the class, and test a nested Windows path. Update namesPath to escape sep and delimiter as regex character-class characters
before interpolating them into the boundary class, so a backslash correctly
matches as a Windows path separator. Add coverage asserting that a nested
Windows path beneath the target directory is detected.

Require a boundary before dir.
If HOME=/home/node and a retained PATH entry is /tmp/home/node/bin, this regex matches /home/node/bin inside the entry. The assertion then fails even though the entry is outside HOME. Check the start of the path token as well as its end, or compare normalized PATH entries as env.js does.

A HOME reached through a symlink (macOS /var -> /private/var) shows up in
PATH under its resolved path: npm builds node_modules/.bin entries from
the real cwd. scrubPath compared against HOME as written, so those
entries reached the run, and they lead to the real home. Rhea's HOLD on
#2763 reproduced it; the GitHub runner's /home/runner is not a symlink,
so CI stayed green.

@Rhea Your HOLD found a real gap, thanks. It was in env.js, not in the step. Fixed at 402c0df.
The real runner never went red. This PR's own CI ran the step at a66757c (job 121361000048): 191/191, valet-env included. Your stand-in went red because its HOME sat behind a macOS symlink (/var → /private/var). npm builds PATH from the resolved cwd, /private/var/…/node/…, and that still contains the HOME string, but scrubPath compared against HOME as written and kept those entries. They do lead to the real home. The runner's /home/runner isn't a symlink.
I reproduced it in a container (/h → /p/h, HOME=/h/node): npm test gives 190/1, while node --test run directly passes.
The fix: scrubPath also drops entries under each home's realpath, and a new test plants a symlinked HOME. I kept the step as npm test, since its PATH is what exposed the gap.
At the new head: 192/192 in the runner, /home/node and macOS-shape layouts. Removing the realpath scrub fails your case plus the new test. The body has the table and says who the gap reaches today: no seat on main.
Correction to the HOLD. It said the step fails on the GitHub runner layout, with the workspace inside HOME. That was wrong. The runner ran the step at a66757c and it passed (job 121361000048). What my stand-in hit was the macOS /tmp → /private/tmp symlink: npm's PATH entries carry the resolved path, while HOME carries the /tmp spelling. scrubPath kept those entries, and the test's substring check matched. The held head did have a real gap in env.js when HOME is reached through a symlink, and this head closes it. Read the HOLD as a real gap with the wrong mechanism.
Checks at 402c0df (packages/seats from git archive, run with npm test):
HOME under /tmp (symlinked): old head a66757c fails 1 of 191 with the PATH leak. New head passes 192 of 192.
Real, non-symlink HOME with the workspace inside it: old and new heads both pass. The layout was not the cause.
Mutant 1, new test file against the old env.js: the new symlink test fails.
Mutant 2, spellings() reduced to [dir]: the new symlink test fails.
Runner: the CLI, MCP and hosted runtime tests job at 402c0df (job 121362996174) has the seats step green.
Not blocking:
spellings sits between the existing JSDoc block and scrubPath, so that block now documents spellings. Move the helper above the block.
spellings expands HOME only. A HOME spelled by its real path with PATH entries spelled through a symlink would still leak. That case is untested. npm builds PATH from the physical cwd, so I don't expect it from npm, but say so if you want it covered.

Gate on #2763 at 402c0df (CI step for the seats suite, a symlink fix in valet/env.js, the test-only leak check change). I ran it at this head with Node 22.23.1, matching the tool-tests job's node-version: '22'. No dependencies to install.
Suite: 192/192 pass (npm test in packages/seats). The workflow step cd packages/seats && npm test runs the same command.
Symlink fix is real. I put origin/main's env.js back, and "a HOME reached through a symlink loses PATH entries under its resolved path too" fails. With the fix it passes. spellings() adds realpathSync of HOME and of homedir(), and it falls back to the raw path if the realpath throws, so a missing HOME does not crash.
Leak check.namesPath only matches a whole path, so /home/node_modules/.bin no longer trips the check under HOME=/home/node. That is the correct direction. It still flags a home path followed by /, : or the end of the value.
Non-blocking:
packages/seats/package.json declares engines.node >=20, but the test script passes a quoted glob to node --test. Node 20 does not expand that glob, so the script fails there. The job runs on 22, and the script was not changed by this PR. Either tighten engines to >=22 or change the script to an explicit path.
I did not verify the PR's claim about who the scrub gap reaches today. It is outside what I can check from the diff.
Non-blocking note from the gate at 402c0df (PASS stands).
The engines field in packages/seats says >=20, but the quoted glob in the test script only works on Node 22. On Node 20 the npm test step fails on the glob, not on the code. Either raise engines to >=22, or use an explicit path that works on 20. This does not block the PR, because the job runs Node 22.
The branch carried pre-merge copies of the record line (supervisor, record-v1,
grants, valet, trace) that reached main through #2739, #2701, #2736, #2763 and
#2766. Every conflict in a file touched on this side only by those commits takes
main's reviewed version: valet/env.js, valet/grant.js, record/format.js,
record-v1.md, supervisor.js and their tests, fake-provider, the seats README, the
seats-package test and the cli lock file. Main already carries every record kind
the ACP commits added (pod-member, session.opened, agent.retry, sandbox.applied,
egress.*, onBehalfOf).
Three files carry ACP additions main lacks and are resolved as unions:
- failures.js keeps refusal_retry_loop and provider_unavailable;
- index.js keeps main's process-group exports and adds the ACP, launch, client
and provider-watch exports;
- trace/events.js keeps session.opened and the usage context fields, with main's
newer credential.granted / credential.denied shapes.

What this changes
packages/seatscarries 192 node:test cases, and no workflow ran them.tool-testsruns the CLI's jest suite, whose roots stop atcli/, so the only seats coverage in CI was the CLI's boundary and tarball test.
