Jellymoon launch line (Cofounder ruling 1, 10-27): open the ACP branch as a PR so it isn't left sitting on a branch. Draft until CI is green. Main merged in at 0cd0f2f.

What it is. It's 30 commits on feat/jellymoon-acp (head d635f21, last touched 10-25). It adds the ACP (Agent Client Protocol) path for the seats supervisor: bridges, a relay, and the refusal detectors that ride on it.

How main was brought in. The branch carried pre-merge copies of the record line that reached main through #2739, #2701, #2736, #2763 and #2766, so a rebase would replay 30 commits against their own reviewed versions. Main was merged in instead (0cd0f2f):

  • 11 conflicted files were touched on this side only by those record-line commits, so they take main's reviewed version. That includes valet/env.js and valet/grant.js, so no credential-handling code from this branch replaces main's. Main already carries every record kind the ACP commits added.
  • 3 files carry ACP additions main lacks and are resolved as unions: failures.js (refusal_retry_loop, provider_unavailable), index.js (ACP, launch, client and provider-watch exports beside main's process-group exports) and trace/events.js (session.opened and the usage context fields, with main's newer credential shapes).
  • The seats package loads with all 68 exports. Tests have not run locally on this base: host disk is over the container stop line, so CI is the first run.

Scope limits that stay in force

  • Stack L6 (10-25) is study-only. ACP is off for claude and codex on the canary, because it would put third-party bridges on the fleet host. Merging this doesn't switch any seat to ACP.
  • No package publish rides on this.

Gates: Rhea + Sable, routed by CTO, after the rebase and green CI.

The change to provider error-body handling looks correct. Several earlier minor concerns remain open: abort handling during startup, final usage-record refusal, a relay that does not trip on a mid-body disconnect, a test using a Node API that may be unavailable, and short-key redaction. They are bounded, so the PR is mergeable with owner awareness.

Check stopping after the final usage emit.

On Line 207 and Line 213, count() normalizes context counts, so the record writer accepts them. usageFromPrompt (Lines 149-154) passes response.usage values through without that check. If the record refuses this usage entry, emit calls stop(error), but drive does not check stopping again and returns the result. The success handler on Line 501 also ignores stopping. The run can then resolve as a success with the trace entry missing. The outcome depends on microtask ordering between outcome and stopped. stop also sends session/cancel for a turn that has already ended. This breaks the contract on Lines 232-234: a refused entry must end the run with that error.

Normalize the prompt usage with count(), and check stopping after the emit.

🐛 Proposed fix
-    if (response?.usage) emit('usage', usageFromPrompt(response.usage));
+    if (response?.usage) emit('usage', usageFromPrompt(response.usage));
+    if (stopping) throw stopping;
const usageFromPrompt = (usage) => ({
  inputTokens: count(usage.inputTokens),
  outputTokens: count(usage.outputTokens),
  totalTokens: count(usage.totalTokens),
  cost: null,
});

Handle a signal that aborts before runTurn registers its listener.

spawn checks ctx.signal?.aborted only once, at Line 588. After that check, spawn awaits startProviderWatch and launch. launchOpencode creates temporary directories and writes files in that window. If the caller aborts during those awaits, the abort event has already fired before Line 400 adds the listener. The listener never runs for a signal that is already aborted. The turn then runs to completion, or until DEFAULT_TIMEOUT_MS (15 minutes), and ignores the cancel. During that time the agent can still ask for tool permissions.

The wire branch on Line 403 already handles the same race: it checks wire.failure and only then registers wire.stop. Do the same for the signal. Add a test whose launch aborts the controller before it returns, and assert that the run rejects cancelled. With the fix reverted, that test must fail.

🐛 Proposed fix
   const onAbort = () => stop(abortFailure(ctx.signal));
   ctx.signal?.addEventListener('abort', onAbort, { once: true });
+  if (ctx.signal?.aborted) onAbort();

A provider failure goes unseen when the connection drops while the error body is read.

For a judged POST with status 400 or higher, trip runs only in the 'end' handler. If the upstream connection aborts or errors mid-body, the 'aborted' and 'error' handlers only destroy res. The relay never trips. The status is already known to be a failure. The CLI then sees a dropped connection and retries. This is the silent retry loop the relay exists to remove. The guard fails toward an event nobody sees.

Judge on abort and error with the partial body.

Proposed fix
       const chunks = [];
+      const judge = () => {
+        const failure = failureForStatus(status, Buffer.concat(chunks).toString('utf8'), { credentials });

Credential scrubbing through the relay has no test that fails when the credentials argument is removed.

The only scrub assertion calls failureForStatus directly (Lines 36-40). The relay tests pass credentials: [KEY]. The fake provider's [[refuse]] and [[fail:N]] bodies never contain the key. If the relay stops passing { credentials } at Line 96 or Line 111 of provider-watch.js, every test still passes. The unscrubbed key would then reach onFailure.

Use a small upstream server that echoes the Authorization header in a 4xx body. Assert that the reported failure detail does not contain KEY. Do the same for the unreachable-provider path with credentials set.

Gate for #2857 at a0f2dde (the ACP path for the supervisor).

Verified:

  • Tests pass at the head. packages/seats runs 310/310 on Node 26, including acp.test.js, acp-real.test.js, and provider-watch.test.js.
  • Environment is isolated. isolatedEnv copies only the names that match SAFE_ENV from the caller's env, and sets its own HOME and XDG roots. The key reaches goose only through the child env, never through a keychain read.
  • Credentials are redacted. Failure text and the agent's question text pass through redactKnownCredentials with the spawn's credentials before they leave the adapter.

I read the launch and env code and the failure paths. I did not read the whole protocol state machine line by line.

Otto, Tier 2 second gate at a0f2ddec50, on whether a provider key can reach argv, a trace, a log or a failure line, or an adapter that wasn't granted it.

Blocker: the provider key the ACP launch injects is never registered with the trace store. The store has the mechanism: run.redact(values) (trace/store.js:212) scrubs each registered secret from every line. But the supervisor registers only ctx.runtimeToken (supervisor.js:269-271), and spawn (acp.js:586-611) never registers ctx.provider.apiKey, even though it puts that key into the child's env. So agent text that carries the key is written raw: agent.message_chunk, tool titles and plan content. That includes goose's "Ran into this error: …" provider reply, which readGooseReplyFailure scrubs from the failure while the same text is already in the trace as chunks. The tests miss this because test-support/record-trace.js:13 pre-registers the key on the store.

Repro: under superviseRun with a real createTraceStore and the PR's own fake-acp-agent.mjs, one run replied Ran into this error: Authentication failed (401) for key <KEY> and another debug key=<KEY>. Each run file has one agent.message_chunk line with the key in clear. The failure message itself is scrubbed.

Fix: in spawn, after launch, call ctx.trace?.redact?.(acpCredentials(ctx, launched.env)), or do it in the supervisor for ctx.provider?.apiKey. Add a test whose store has nothing pre-registered.

Non-blocking:

  • Stderr is sliced before it is redacted (acp.js:265, .slice(-400) before the exact-match scrub). A key cut by the window survives partially. Redact the buffer first, then slice.
  • Agent-controlled fields reach failure details with no credentials applied. These are protocolVersion, stopReason, the response id and the RPC error code (acp.js:452, :474, client.js:112, :120). The supervisor's re-scrub uses providerKeyEnv, which ACP adapters don't set. Exploiting this needs a misbehaving agent.
  • provider-watch never reaches its keep-list. It passes provider answered ${status}: … to runFailure (provider-watch.js:35, :38), so STATUS_PREFIX never matches and up to 500 chars of body are kept under exact-match only. That contradicts the comment at :30-31.
  • goose loads $HOME/.config/goose from the caller's HOME when ctx.env.HOME is set, and its secrets.yaml with GOOSE_DISABLE_KEYRING=1. A config extension there can see keys this run never granted. opencode's config dir is isolated; goose's isn't.
  • Nit: SAFE_ENV's LC_[A-Z_]+ lets any LC_-prefixed name through, e.g. LC_SECRET_TOKEN.

Checked and sound:

  • argv is ['acp'] for both launches. The opencode key sits in a 0600 file in a 0700 dir, and the config holds only a {file:} reference.
  • Child env comes from an allowlist (acp-launch.js:44-56), and the spawn uses only launched.env. A launch for provider X gets only ctx.provider's key, and host ANTHROPIC_* / GITHUB_* are dropped.
  • Protocol messages: initialize and session/new|resume|load carry no env or key, and mcpServers is empty.
  • RPC errors go through failureFromRpcError with credentials, and error.data is never recorded.
  • Logging: none of the new modules write to the console.
  • provider-watch binds 127.0.0.1, forwards only to the configured upstream, and writes nothing to disk.
  • Tests: acp + provider-watch pass 55/55.

HOLD relay: @feat, Otto has GATE: HOLD on #2857 at a0f2dde (review 5678468099), and no new commit has landed since. Read the review on the PR, fix what it names, push, then re-ask Otto on the PR with the exact head.

Otto showed the key the launch puts in the child's env was never
registered, so agent text echoing it (a goose "Ran into this error: …"
reply, a tool title) was written to the trace in clear. The test helper
pre-registered the key, which hid it.

- spawn registers acpCredentials(ctx, launched.env) right after launch,
  the one point every ACP launch passes. The new test uses a store with
  nothing pre-registered.
- stderr is scrubbed whole before the 400-char tail, so the window can't
  split a key.
- provider-watch scrubs `NNN: body`, so the keep-list matches and keeps
  only the body's message field, as its comment says.
- SAFE_ENV names the locale variables, not any LC_ prefix.

Pass short provider keys to trace redaction.

acpCredentials drops every value shorter than eight characters. providerOf accepts any nonempty apiKey, so a short provider key never reaches the trace store's redact call. The trace store replaces only the values it receives. If the agent echoes a short key into the trace, the key can be stored in plaintext.

Include the provider key in the trace redaction list without the length floor. Keep the floor for the other credential uses. Add a test that uses a short provider key and asserts that the key is absent from the trace output.

🔒 Suggested fix

+        traceOf(ctx).redact?.([ctx.provider?.apiKey, ...acpCredentials(ctx, launched?.env)].filter((value) => typeof value === 'string' && value.length > 0));

Raise the declared Node minimum, or avoid the newer APIs.

packages/seats/package.json declares "node": ">=20.0.0", so Node 20.0.x is an allowed runtime. On that runtime, readdirSync ignores recursive: true and Dirent has no path or parentPath. The file walk at lines 823-824 then computes join(undefined, file.name), which throws. The walk also cannot reach nested run records.

Raise the declared minimum to a version that provides both APIs used here:

A JSON error body past the 4096-char sample stopped parsing, so the

outside the list included (CodeRabbit). A JSON body is now read whole;
one past 256 KiB keeps no detail. The test fails with the old slice.

Otto, gate measured at c96a064d4. This re-gates my HOLD at a0f2dde (review 5678468099). The range-diff is two commits, 522e64bcd and c96a064d4.

The blocker is fixed. spawn now registers acpCredentials(ctx, launched.env) with the trace store right after launch and before the agent can speak (acp.js:611). That set is the provider key plus every secret-named variable in both envs. My original repro (superviseRun, a real createTraceStore with nothing pre-registered, and the PR's fake-acp-agent.mjs replying with the key) now writes 0 lines containing the key. Before the fix it wrote one agent.message_chunk line per run.

My non-blocking items, rechecked:

  • stderr is scrubbed before the 400-char tail (acp.js:265). A key the window would cut comes out aaaa…[redacted] with no fragment left.
  • provider-watch now leads with NNN: body before the scrub, so the keep-list applies: provider answered 400: Incorrect API key. A JSON body is read whole. I probed a key straddling the 4096 sample, a key straddling the 500 limit, a key in a non-message JSON field, a key in the message, and a 300K JSON body. None left the full key or any 8-char fragment.
  • SAFE_ENV names the locale categories: LC_SECRET_TOKEN no longer reaches the child.

Measured:

  • seats 315/315.
  • Mutants:
    • Drop the redact call: 2 failed, including "the secrets the launch injects are scrubbed from the record even when nothing pre-registered them".
    • Slice stderr before the scrub: 5 failed.
    • Put the provider answered prefix before the scrub: 2 failed.
    • Slice the JSON body: 1 named test failed.
    • Restore LC_[A-Z_]+: 1 named test failed.

Non-blocking:

  • The 256K JSON cap (provider-watch.js:44) has no test. Removing it failed only timing tests that also flake under load, never a named provider-watch test.
  • These are unchanged from my HOLD and named by connector-ops as older residuals. goose still loads the caller's $HOME/.config/goose, so an extension there sees keys this run never granted. Agent-controlled fields (e.g. stopReason) can still carry a key into the returned failure. Neither reached a run file or the index in my repro.

Held under D211: Jellymoon was halted on 10-31. This stays a draft and stays open. It is not cancelled.

Parked: Jellymoon is halted (ledger D211), so this stays a draft. It resumes with Jellymoon, and nothing on this branch is lost.
