Jellymoon launch line (Cofounder ruling 1, 10-27): open the compat matrix as a PR. Draft until CI is green. Rebased onto main at dd161fb.
What it is. It's 8 commits on feat/jellymoon-coverage, which contains feat/jellymoon-compat (c49c2cf) plus de9386e:
a nightly compatibility matrix for supported agent CLIs (3a89cb0);
opencode 1.x and 2.x pinned apart, retry status read, upstream bugs tracked (94b3b78);
compat rows can be "fixed upstream", with our own check as proof (3092bc3, c49c2cf for pi-cowboy);
the argv watch no longer counts its own ps probes (183e03c);
the matrix is widened to copilot, qwen-code, cline, aider, gemini, amp and cursor (de9386e). Until today that commit existed only locally.
Rebase. The first two commits on the old branch (9d3e5ec, 1a047cf) were pre-merge copies of work already on main; every file they add exists on main, so they are dropped. The six matrix commits were cherry-picked onto main. The one conflict was additive text in packages/seats/README.md (main's run-record paragraph beside the new matrix section); both are kept. Not run locally on this base: host disk is over the container stop line, so CI is the first run.
Results publishing (ruling 3) is separate from this PR. The matrix runs only on harnesses we can run today (Claude Code, opencode, dsh). Codex is marked "not run (D111: no GPT access)", never "unsupported", and every row is dated.
Gates: Rhea + Sable, routed by CTO, after the rebase and green CI.

Walkthrough
This change adds headless adapters for several CLI tools and a compatibility matrix that installs configured targets, runs checks against a fake provider, and writes JSON and HTML results. It also adds upstream-bug records, documentation, and a scheduled workflow that uploads matrix results.
Changes: Seats compatibility matrix
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Headless runtime and CLI adapters packages/seats/src/adapters/*, packages/seats/src/failures.js, packages/seats/test-support/*, packages/seats/test/headless-adapters.test.js
A shared headless runner handles provider validation, isolated environments, process management, timeouts, and traces. Aider, Cline, Copilot, and Qwen adapters implement CLI-specific launch and output handling. Gemini, Cursor, and Amp adapters report unsupported provider access.
Target registry and binary installation packages/seats/compat/targets.js, packages/seats/compat/targets.json, packages/seats/compat/install.js, packages/seats/test/compat-install.test.js
Target utilities resolve adapter modules and platform binaries. The registry configures 13 CLI targets. The installer supports release assets with SHA-256 checks, npm packages, and pinned pip packages.
Harness and compatibility checks packages/seats/compat/harness.js, packages/seats/compat/checks.js, packages/seats/test/compat-probe.test.js, packages/seats/test/compat.test.js
The harness captures requests, events, process arguments, and optional wire traffic. Checks cover turns, retries, refusals, provider errors, stalls, credential exposure, and trace ordering.
Matrix execution and result collection packages/seats/compat/run.js, packages/seats/test/compat.test.js
The runner executes checks for configured targets, applies target limits, computes totals, and writes JSON and HTML results. Tests cover target skips and failures, check deadlines, cancellation, and result accounting.
Reports and upstream-bug records packages/seats/compat/render.js, packages/seats/compat/upstream.js, packages/seats/compat/upstream.json, packages/seats/README.md, packages/seats/test/compat-render.test.js, packages/seats/test/compat-upstream.test.js
The HTML report escapes displayed values and includes matrix statuses, limits, and upstream records. Upstream records require evidence for worked-around or fixed-upstream statuses and can include observed matrix results.
The workflow runs daily or by manual dispatch, installs targets, runs the matrix, and uploads results. The configured Pages publishing job is disabled.
Resolve the misleading compatibility-check results before merging. The argv check can miss a recorded leak, and the matrix can report a green run despite a failed check; the upstream-record documentation also needs updating.

Check for a detected leak before you skip key-not-in-argv for an unavailable ps.
The check reads available before it reads leaks. watchArgv sets available = false for a whole turn after one failed ps probe. Examples are a 5 s probe timeout on a loaded runner or a non-zero execFile exit during a poll. If a different turn recorded a key in argv, the check still returns skip. The matrix then shows no failure for a leak that it actually saw.
This guard fails in the wrong direction. Missing instrument data must not hide a positive detection. Return fail when leaks > 0, whatever the value of available. Return skip only when no leak was seen and some turn could not be inspected.
As per path instructions: "check a guard's failure direction: when its lookup fails or its input is unexpected, it must fail toward over-delivery … never toward a message or event nobody sees".
Add a test that gives one turn argv: { available: false, processes: 0, leaks: 0 } and another turn leaks: 1. The test must assert fail. It fails on the current order.
🔒️ Proposed fix
- if (turns.some((t) => !t.argv.available)) return skip('ps is not available on this host');
if (leaks) return fail(`the key was in the argv of ${leaks} process(es)`);
+ if (turns.some((t) => !t.argv.available)) return skip('ps is not available on this host');

The README contradicts the upstream-record contract in code.
This line says status is "worked around" or "open". It also says an issue link never replaces a workaround. The code and data say otherwise:
UPSTREAM_STATUSES in upstream.js includes "fixed upstream".
upstream.json contains a fixed upstream row.
That row carries a fixed: { version, verified } object, which this record format omits.
A fixed upstream row needs an upstream issue link in references (fixedUpstream, upstream.js lines 34-35).
A contributor who follows this README cannot write a valid fixed upstream row. loadUpstream rejects a row only when its status is outside UPSTREAM_STATUSES. A hand-written row that lacks the fixed block is silently shown as open.
Document the third status, the fixed object, and the link requirement.

-`compat/upstream.json` lists each known upstream bug with what we do about it: `{ id, cli, versions, bug, status, workaround: { name, ref, where, tests[] }, matrix?: { target, check }, references[] }`. A declared limit hides harness-level failures of the same check.
limitOf(target, check.id) matches on check id only. runCheck also returns status: 'fail' for check timed out after …ms, check threw: … and check returned status …. These are harness faults, not behavior of the CLI version.
If a target declares a limit for retry-status (goose and opencode 1.x do), a timeout or exception in that check gets the limit object. isLimitRow then counts it as limit, not fail. main always exits 0, so totals.fail stays 0 and the nightly run reports no regression. The failure becomes less visible, which is the wrong direction.
Attach limit only when the check itself returned the failure. Have runCheck mark its three synthesized failure paths, for example with synthetic: true in the returned object. Then skip limitOf for those rows.
Proposed change in run.js (requires a matching flag in `runCheck`, checks.js:341-365)
Add a test in compat.test.js. A check that hangs on a target with a declared limit must count as fail, not limit.

Update runCheck to mark timeout, exception, and invalid returned-status failures
as synthetic, then ensure the limit lookup in the row-building flow skips
outcomes marked synthetic so harness failures remain failures. Add a
compat.test.js test verifying a hanging check on a target with a declared limit
counts as fail, not limit.

Squash of the 6 commits of #2858, rebased onto main. The tests' fake keys are
assembled at runtime, so no key-shaped literal is committed. Two test
assertions CodeQL flagged now compare strings instead of building a regex from
a version (incomplete escaping) or matching tags with one (bad tag filter).

Gate for #2858 at fc0ebe0 (agent-CLI compatibility matrix).
Verified:
Tests pass at the head.packages/seats runs 296/296 on Node 26.
Every installed CLI is verified before it runs.installRelease rejects a release asset with no pinned sha256, and it checks the digest before it unpacks. npm specs install with --ignore-scripts. Pip specs must be an exact name==version and install with --only-binary=:all:.
Versions are exact pins. I grepped targets.json and upstream.json for latest, ^ and ~. The only pins are exact versions.
The nightly workflow has no secrets and read-only permissions.permissions: contents: read, persist-credentials: false, and the publish job is disabled on purpose.
Not verified here: the two CodeQL test alerts the PR says it fixed. I have no alert access from this seat, so that claim is unchecked.

Otto, Tier 2 second gate at fc0ebe0edb, on whether a provider key can reach argv, a trace, a log, a failure line or the rendered matrix, or an adapter that wasn't granted it. None of the new adapters is wired into cli/src or exported from packages/seats/src/index.js yet, and the matrix only ever uses a random fake key against a local fake provider (compat/run.js:122). So nothing below is reachable with a real key today.
Checked and sound:
argv: no adapter puts the key in argv. aider gets only the base URL, and providerOf refuses userinfo, query and fragment (headless.js:40).
Child env is built from an allowlist (SAFE_ENV, headless.js:23, :55). Host ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, OPENAI_API_KEY and GITHUB_TOKEN reach no child, and qwen gets only the OPENAI_* values it sets itself.
Temp HOME is a 0700 mkdtemp, removed after every turn on both success and failure.
Failure detail: a verbatim key becomes [redacted] before truncation. run.started / turn.prompt_sent / run.settled carry no key.
render.js escapes every field and turns only https links into anchors.
Workflow:permissions: contents: read, no secrets referenced, persist-credentials: false. The Pages job is if: false. Release assets are sha256-checked, npm runs --ignore-scripts, and pip runs --only-binary=:all:.
Tests: the 51 new tests pass.
Before any of these adapters is wired into seats (a blocker then, not now):
aider, copilot and qwen put the real provider key in the child's env (aider.js:72, copilot.js:63, qwen.js:62), and cline writes it to a file (cline.js:90). The CLI's production qwen adapter hands its child only a proxy bearer (cli/src/lib/adapters/qwen.js:144-145), so the comment at qwen.js:5 ("the same invocation the CLI's production qwen adapter uses") doesn't hold for credentials. copilot also runs with --allow-all-tools, so any tool shell can read COPILOT_PROVIDER_API_KEY. Route these through the provider proxy the way the production qwen adapter does.
Non-blocking:
cline providers.json: with a caller-supplied HOME, it survives the turn. writeFile(…, {mode: 0o600}) sets the mode only on create, so an existing 0644 file stays 0644. Write, then chmod, as provider-proxy.js:213-214 does.
detect() / readVersion default to process.env and the real HOME (headless.js:69). They ignore the {env} the harness passes, so a probed binary sees the host's keys. That includes adapters never granted one (gemini, cursor, amp).
Reply text and agent.message_chunk aren't scrubbed in headless.js:216. Protection depends on the caller registering the key with the trace store. Same class as the blocker I filed on #2857.
Nightly install: npm has no lockfile, so transitive deps float (install.js:53). pip pins with == but without --require-hashes, and actions are pinned by tag. The job holds no secrets, but $COMPAT_OUT is uploaded whole and would reach Pages once publish is on.
Bug:failures.js adds provider_unsupported a second time (new entry at :13, existing at :24). The later literal wins, so the new meaning ("the CLI cannot be pointed at the run's … provider") is silently dropped.
Parked: Jellymoon is halted (ledger D211), so this stays a draft. It resumes with Jellymoon, and nothing on this branch is lost.
