Summary

TASK-017: Python SDK replies refused with 409 unseen_messages (D94 walk, prod 10-26).

  • run() never read the pod, so the send guard refused every reply. _post_reply now calls GET .../pods/:podId/context first, then posts, and retries once if a message lands in between.
  • Any 4xx raises CommonlyError with the server's message in its text. Before, the text was only the status.
  • Docs: WEBHOOK_SDK.md (gotcha) and CAP.md (verb 3) state the read-before-post rule.

Tests

examples/sdk/python/test_commonly.py (6 tests, stdlib unittest): python3 -I -m unittest discover -s examples/sdk/python -p 'test_*.py'. Against the old SDK the file gives 1 failure and 5 errors; against the new one, 6 pass.

Limit, stated plainly: the tests run the real SDK against a local server that copies the guard's contract (read clears the hold; the 409 body shape from agentSendFreshness). They do not call the backend's agentSendFreshness module. Lily's ticket asked for a test against the real guard; that is not done here and needs a backend-side harness.

cli/__tests__/agent-init.test.mjs passes 4/4 (it reads the SDK file).

Tier 1, one gate.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…xx (TASK-017)

The Python SDK posted replies without reading the pod, so the send guard
refused every one with 409 unseen_messages, and the error text kept only
the status. run() now reads GET .../pods/:podId/context before each reply
and retries once if a message lands between the read and the post. Any 4xx
raises a CommonlyError whose text includes the server's message.

Docs (WEBHOOK_SDK.md, CAP.md) state the read-before-post rule.

Walkthrough

The documentation and Python SDK example now describe and implement reading pod context before posting replies. The SDK retries once after a 409 refusal and includes available server reasons in HTTP error messages.

Gate review of #2800 (TASK-017) at 2ad096b. Run in a detached worktree at that head.

Commands run:

  • python3 -I -m unittest discover -s examples/sdk/python -p 'test_*.py': 6 of 6 passed

Read-review findings:

  • The freshness contract matches the real backend, which I read rather than ran. GET /api/agents/runtime/pods/:podId/context (routes/agentsRuntime.ts:1736) calls AgentSendFreshness.recordRead (1801–1818). POST /api/agents/runtime/pods/:podId/messages (2261) checks unseenMessages at 2286 and returns 409 with the hold object, which carries message. _describe_http_error reads message, so the server's reason reaches the caller.
  • _post_reply reads, posts, and retries once after a 409 with another read. A second 409 propagates with its reason, and the stock loop logs it and continues.
  • The 4xx message handling covers dict payloads, string payloads, and bare status.

Non-blocking:

  • The test fake copies the guard's contract rather than calling agentSendFreshness, as sprint-review noted. The backend tests for the guard itself exist (agentSendFreshness.test.js, agentSendFreshnessCommitFence.test.js), but nothing runs the SDK against them end to end. A small service-tier run would close that gap.
  • The example reads the pod after handle() returns, so the reply is composed from context read before the read the guard checks. The guard still holds the post if anything new arrived, so this is correct but not obvious to a reader.

Qualify when a manual reply is refused.

A manual loop does not have every reply refused when it omits a read on that iteration. The guard refuses only when newer messages remain unread. Replace “or every reply is refused” with a condition about unread messages.

Add a run() test for the reply path.

The reply-path tests call _post_reply() or post_message() directly. None of them calls run(). Reverting the loop from self._post_reply(pod_id, reply) to self.post_message(pod_id, reply) would therefore leave all six tests passing. That revert restores the unread-message refusal in the stock loop.

Per the repository's review checklist, a test that still passes with the fix reverted does not cover the change. Add a bounded test that drives run() through the fake server:

  • Serve GET /api/agents/runtime/events with one event that has _id, podId, and payload.content. Accept the POST /api/agents/runtime/events/<id>/ack request. Without this handler, poll_events() receives a 404, and run() keeps retrying.
  • Return 401 on the next poll, and call run(..., interval_s=0.01, max_auth_errors=1) so the loop exits.
  • Record the request order. Assert a context read, then a message post, then the ack.

The test must fail when run() calls post_message directly.

Make the second-refusal test prove the retry.

_post_reply performs a second context read and POST after a 409. However, always_held raises before the fake server sees either POST, and the test checks only the final status and message. Removing the retry would still satisfy the test.

Configure the fake server to refuse both attempts. Count attempted POSTs separately from accepted posts. Assert two context reads, two POST attempts, and no accepted post. The neighboring retry test covers only a refusal followed by a successful retry.

Drive run() through the fake server: one event, one reply, one ack, then a
401 that exits the loop. Asserts read -> post -> ack and fails if run() posts
directly. Second-refusal test now refuses both POSTs at the server and asserts
2 reads, 2 attempts, 0 accepted posts instead of monkeypatching post_message.

CodeRabbit threads answered, both fixed in b8d57c5:

  • discussion_r4374853722 (test_commonly.py): fixed. run() is driven through the fake server with one event, one reply, one ack, then a 401 that exits the loop. The test asserts read -> post -> ack and fails if run() posts directly (checked by mutating run() to call post_message, which reddens the suite).
  • discussion_r4374853727 (test_commonly.py): fixed. The fake server refuses both POSTs itself. The test asserts 2 context reads, 2 attempts, 0 accepted posts, and keeps the final 409 reason assertion.

Haiku gate on #2800 at b8d57c5. CI is green (merge state CLEAN, no failing checks).

Checked:

  • Every reply path reads the pod before posting. run() now calls _post_reply, which does get_pod_context, then post_message, and retries once on 409. A second 409 propagates with its reason.
  • _describe_http_error keeps the server's message, error or code on every 4xx. A missing or non-dict payload keeps the bare status line.
  • Ran test_commonly.py at this head in isolation (python3 -I): 7/7 pass. This includes the retry-once case, the second-refusal case and the run-reads-then-posts-then-acks case.

Non-blocking: the manual-loop example in the module docstring (commonly.py, around line 22) calls bot.get_pod_context and then bot.post_message directly, not _post_reply. It skips the 409 retry, so a stock bot that copies it can still hit the race. Switching that example to _post_reply or noting the retry would close it.

Not verified: a live run against a server that issues a 409 unseen_messages. The tests use a stub.
