feat(litellm): log every model fallback and count it (TASK-029) - #2831
Tier 2 (lily-shen, 10-27): the callback runs inside the live LiteLLM proxy on every model call. Gates: Sable (Haiku) and lumen (non-Haiku), both PASS at c78b6b7, re-stamp asked at e3a10c8. Hand press, since it touches k8s/.
TASK-029, slice B of TASK-003. When router_settings.fallbacks answers a request from another model group, the caller still gets the name of the group it asked for. A community agent whose openrouter/nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b:free route fails looks healthy while deepseek-v4-flash does the work, and nothing records it.
What changes
k8s/helm/commonly/files/litellm/model_fallback_signal.py: a third LiteLLM callback. At every fallback hop the v1.106.2 router calls log_success_fallback_event or log_failure_fallback_event on each CustomLogger. Each call prints one stdout line: {"alarm":"model_fallback","outcome":"served"|"passed"|"failed","requested","from","fallback","attempt","reason"}
requested is the caller's group and from is the group that failed at this hop.
On a two-hop chain (gpt-5.4 → nemotron → deepseek) the hop that answered is served and the outer hop is passed.
reason is the error's class and status only, because a provider can echo the request into its message.
The line has no prompt, key or key alias, and the callback never raises.
ConfigMap key, callbacks entry and /app mount, matching the DeepSeek shim.
model_fallback log metric in k8s/monitoring/log-metrics.json (litellm container, jsonPayload.alarm="model_fallback"). There is no alert policy yet; that one is SRE's to wire.
docs/development/LITELLM.md paragraph.
Who it counts: native hosted turns send disable_fallbacks (D81), so every line comes from another caller: the moltbot gateway, commonly-bot, or platform features through llmService.
Not in this slice: recording the served model on the run (TASK-028, native AgentRun turns) and showing it in Agent Settings (TASK-030).
Proof
Python suite (14 tests), run by backend/__tests__/unit/helm/litellmModelFallbackSignal.test.js, which also pins the ConfigMap key, the callbacks entry, the mount and the metric filter. Helm suites on Node 22: 8/8.
python3 -I scripts/monitoring/apply-alerting.py --check reports 9 log metrics and no errors.
Real router: LiteLLM 1.106.2, the pinned image's version, with the callback loaded and a local upstream that returns OpenRouter's 404 for Nemotron.
Fallback served: the response comes from deepseek-v4-flash (x-litellm-attempted-fallbacks: 1), with one line: outcome: served, requested and from both openrouter/nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b:free, fallback: deepseek-v4-flash, attempt: 1, reason: NotFoundError 404.
Two hops (gpt-5.4 500s, nemotron 404s, deepseek answers): the inner hop is served (from nemotron) and the outer hop is passed (from gpt-5.4). Before 27edced both logged as served (CodeRabbit).
DeepSeek also down: one outcome: failed line, and the caller gets the error.
The prompt text appears in neither line.
Metadata bucket, 10-27 at e3a10c8: the callback reads the bucket the router stamped the hop into, using LiteLLM's own get_router_metadata_variable_name(original_function.__name__) (fallback_event_handlers.py:717). A chat completion stamps metadata, and /v1/messages and the batch/file paths stamp litellm_metadata. On a real 1.106.2 Router, a chat completion that carried a litellm_metadata and fell back logged attempt: null at c78b6b7, which read the unstamped bucket, and attempt: 1 at e3a10c8 (CodeRabbit review 5663471360).
Real proxy boot, 10-27 at c78b6b7: litellm --config (1.106.2) loaded the production callbacks line, all three modules, from the config directory, as /app does in the pod. It came up with no traceback.
A nemotron request that 404s, with an upstream that echoes the prompt into its error, came back 200 from deepseek-v4-flash (x-litellm-attempted-fallbacks: 1) and printed exactly one served line. The prompt canary does not appear anywhere in the proxy log.
A direct deepseek-v4-flash call printed no line.
A nemotron request with disable_fallbacks: true returned its 404 and printed no line.
The litellmDeepseekToolShim callbacks pin moved from an exact string to a regex that checks its own entry, so adding a callback doesn't break it.
When router_settings.fallbacks answers a request from another group, the
caller still sees the group it asked for. A community agent whose Nemotron
route fails looks healthy while DeepSeek does the work (TASK-003).
model_fallback_signal.py is a third LiteLLM callback. The v1.106.2 router
calls log_success_fallback_event / log_failure_fallback_event on every
CustomLogger at each fallback hop; each call prints one JSON line naming the
requested group, the fallback group, the depth, the requested group's error
and the key alias. No prompt, response or key hash. It never raises.
The model_fallback log metric counts those lines from the litellm container
so SRE can alert on it. Native hosted turns send disable_fallbacks (D81), so
every count comes from the gateway, commonly-bot or llmService features.
Verified against the real 1.106.2 Router with a local upstream returning
OpenRouter's 404 for Nemotron: one served line when DeepSeek answers, one
failed line when it does not, and the prompt in neither.

Walkthrough
The change adds a LiteLLM callback that emits JSON lines for model fallback events. Helm mounts and registers the callback, and a log-based metric matches its alarm field. Tests and documentation cover the callback and its integration.
Changes: LiteLLM model fallback signals
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Fallback signal callback and tests k8s/helm/commonly/files/litellm/model_fallback_signal.py, backend/__tests__/unit/helm/litellm_model_fallback_signal_test.py
The callback distinguishes served, passed, and failed fallback outcomes. It limits tracked answered requests and omits error messages and key aliases from records. Python tests cover outcome fields, tracking behavior, metadata, omitted data, and error handling.
Helm mounts and registers the callback. The log metric matches LiteLLM logs with alarm="model_fallback". Jest tests check the integration and allow additional callbacks in the DeepSeek shim assertion. The development guide describes the signal and metric.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2615: Both PRs register a callback in LiteLLM’s callback list. This PR also updates the related callback-list test.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2718: That PR disables fallbacks for native runtime requests. This PR documents that native hosted turns do not emit the new fallback signals.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2835: Both PRs cover the LiteLLM fallback observability path. This PR adds the callback and metric; that PR records served-model and fallback-count data for native turns.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to e3a10
The fallback signal reads router-owned metadata rather than caller-supplied model-group text. No issue identified here needs to delay merging.

- Line 47: Update the fallback logging logic that sets `text` so it records only
a bounded, structured error category and status, never `str(error)` or other
exception-message content. Add a test using an exception message containing
prompt text and verify that the prompt is absent from the fallback log.
- Line 80: Update the success-hook handling around emit so only the model that
actually answered is recorded as served; do not emit served for an outer
fallback hop after a nested fallback succeeds. Add a test for the configured
Codex → Nemotron → DeepSeek route that verifies only DeepSeek is recorded as
served.

Three review findings on #2831.
The reason carried the provider's error message, which can echo the
request. It is now the error's class and status only.
The key alias came out too. CodeQL traced user_api_key_alias into the
print as sensitive data, and the line is useful without it.
A two-hop chain (gpt-5.4 -> nemotron -> deepseek, as the chart has it)
logged both hops as served, though nemotron failed. The router runs the
inner hop inside the outer one, so the hop whose fallback answered logs
first. The request's shared AttemptedFallbackTargets object is
remembered by identity, in a bounded map, since the slots dataclass
can be neither hashed nor weak-referenced. A later success hop of the
same request now logs as passed. Each line also carries `from`, the
group that failed at that hop, beside `requested`, the caller's group.
Checked on the real 1.106.2 Router: the inner hop logs served and the
outer passed; one hop and both-down are unchanged.

feat(litellm): log every model fallback and count it (TASK-029) #2831 (comment) (intermediate hop reported as served): confirmed and fixed. With the chart's gpt-5.4 → nemotron → deepseek chain, the real router logged both hops as served. The router awaits the inner hop inside the outer one, so the hop whose fallback answered always logs first. The callback now remembers the request's shared AttemptedFallbackTargets object by identity, in a bounded map, because v1.106.2 makes it a slots dataclass that can be neither hashed nor weak-referenced. A later success hop of the same request logs passed. Each line now also carries from (the group that failed at that hop) beside requested (the caller's group). Real router output: the inner hop is served with from nemotron and fallback deepseek, the outer hop is passed with from gpt-5.4 and fallback nemotron, and both have requested gpt-5.4.
CodeQL py/clear-text-logging-sensitive-data: the SARIF flow traced meta.get('user_api_key_alias') into the print. keyAlias is gone from the line.

Remember which model a pre-routing hook picked, so fallback lookup can key off it.
Fallback resolution runs on an outer kwargs dict that ``**kwargs`` already copied, so
writing the model there is invisible by the time routing picks a tier. The metadata
buckets are nested dicts shared by reference across those copies, which is how the
router already carries values back up.
The write goes through the proxy-internal bucket resolver, never into both buckets:
on /v1/messages the top-level ``metadata`` dict is the provider's own request field,
so a blanket write would forward the tier stamp upstream.

Use LiteLLM’s selected router metadata bucket.
LiteLLM selects litellm_metadata whenever that key exists. The callback instead selects the first bucket containing model-group fields. A caller-controlled metadata.original_model_group can therefore reach requested and place arbitrary text in the log.

The callback picked the first bucket holding model-group fields, so on an
endpoint with litellm_metadata, a caller's own metadata.original_model_group
could reach `requested`. Choose the bucket the way LiteLLM does
(get_metadata_variable_name_from_kwargs, core_helpers.py:319 in 1.106.2):
litellm_metadata whenever the request has one, else metadata.
The new test fails on the old selector and passes here.

_metadata now picks the bucket the way LiteLLM does: litellm_metadata whenever the request has one, else metadata. That matches get_metadata_variable_name_from_kwargs (litellm_core_utils/core_helpers.py:319 in 1.106.2). It no longer picks a bucket by what's in it. A new test puts caller text in metadata beside a router-stamped litellm_metadata and asserts the text never reaches the line. That test fails on the old selector and passes at c78b6b7, and the Python suite passes 12/12.
The proxy also strips a caller's original_model_group and attempted_fallbacks from both buckets before routing (_strip_router_reserved_metadata, proxy/litellm_pre_call_utils.py:664). So on the proxy path, the fix is a second layer behind that strip.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Re-gate of #2831 at c78b6b7 (TASK-029), after CodeRabbit's last thread.
Bucket selector now follows LiteLLM._metadata picks litellm_metadata whenever the request has that key, else metadata, so a caller's own metadata can't stand in for the router's stamp. The new test fails on the 0ef97c9 selector and passes here.
Suite:litellm_model_fallback_signal_test.py passes 12/12 at c78b6b7 (run against the signal file at that head).
Closes my last caveat:reason is class and status only (_reason), and the LITELLM.md paragraph now says the same. The provider-echo gap I flagged at 27c5c20 is gone.
Not run: the jest helm wiring test (no backend node_modules in this checkout). This delta touches only the signal file and its test, so the ConfigMap key and mount are unchanged.
Select the metadata bucket by LiteLLM’s original_function.
For ordinary /chat/completions, LiteLLM uses _acompletion and stamps metadata, while preserving litellm_metadata. When both buckets exist, this callback selects the untouched litellm_metadata, so attempt can be null or stale and requested can identify the current hop instead of the original request.

Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 10 included reviews per hour; 3 remain after this review.
1. A callback exception can't fail or delay the model call. Both hooks are async on a CustomLogger, which LiteLLM calls after the hop has already resolved. log_success_fallback_event wraps _first_answer in try/except. emit wraps json.dumps (with default=str) and falls back to a minimal {alarm, outcome, signalError} line, and wraps print in its own try/except. fallback_line only does .get on dicts it has type-checked (_metadata returns {} for a non-dict bucket, and kwargs is coerced to {}). I found no raising path. The one cost is that print(..., flush=True) is a synchronous stdout write on the event loop. It runs once per fallback hop, not per request, so I'm not counting it against the gate.
2. No prompt, response or key material is logged. The line has exactly seven keys: alarm, outcome, requested, from, fallback, attempt and reason. reason is the exception class plus status_code, never the message. requested and attempt come from the bucket LiteLLM itself selects (litellm_metadata if present, else metadata), so caller-supplied metadata can't reach the line when the router stamped litellm_metadata. The new conflicting-bucket test covers that, and the proxy's reserved-key strip sits in front of it. No messages, no api_key, no headers.
3. The metric name matches.log-metrics.json defines model_fallback with filter jsonPayload.alarm="model_fallback", which is the literal alarm value on every emitted line, including the signalError fallback line.
CodeRabbit. The Major thread r4377290997 is answered and fixed at this head. Review 5663471360 at this head carries one Minor note in its body, with no inline thread: on /chat/completions the router stamps metadata, so a request that also carries an untouched litellm_metadata would read requested and attempt from the wrong bucket. That is label accuracy only. alarm is always emitted and requested/from fall back to original_model_group, so the counter still fires. The suggested fix, choosing by original_function, would reintroduce the caller-bucket exposure from the Major thread. It is unanswered, though, and it needs a reply (not fixing: <reason> or a fix) before the press.
…M stamps it (TASK-029)
run_async_fallback stamps a hop into the bucket get_router_metadata_variable_name
names for the router function (fallback_event_handlers.py:717, v1.106.2), not
the one get_metadata_variable_name_from_kwargs picks. A chat completion that
carried a litellm_metadata had its hop stamped into `metadata`, and the callback
read the unstamped bucket: on a real 1.106.2 Router the line logged
attempt: null. It now calls LiteLLM's own helper, with a mirror of the 1.106.2
rule when that isn't importable (the stubbed test harness), and logs attempt: 1.
The new chat-completion test fails on the previous head.

#2831 (review) (Minor, select the bucket by original_function): valid, fixed in e3a10c8.
In 1.106.2, run_async_fallback stamps the hop into the bucket that get_router_metadata_variable_name(original_function.__name__) names (fallback_event_handlers.py:717, batch_utils.py:155). It does not use get_metadata_variable_name_from_kwargs, the helper I mirrored in c78b6b7. _metadata now calls LiteLLM's own helper. It falls back to a mirror of the 1.106.2 rule only when that helper can't be imported, which is the case in the stubbed test harness.
Proof on a real 1.106.2 Router: a chat completion with a request-carried litellm_metadata, falling back from an unreachable primary to a mock backup. At c78b6b7 the line logged attempt: null. At e3a10c8 it logs attempt: 1, and the module uses litellm.router_utils.batch_utils.get_router_metadata_variable_name.
This doesn't undo the Major fix. /v1/messages takes the generic path (_ageneric_api_call_with_fallbacks_anthropic_messages_attempt), so it still reads litellm_metadata, and the caller-metadata test still passes. Python suite 14/14, helm jest 4/4. The new chat-completion test fails on c78b6b7.

Non-Haiku Tier 2 re-gate at e3a10c8, delta from my PASS at c78b6b7.
_metadata now picks the hop's bucket the way the router stamps it: LiteLLM's own get_router_metadata_variable_name(original_function.__name__). When that helper can't be imported, a local copy of the 1.106.2 rule stands in, inside a try. A chat completion reads metadata even when the request also carries a litellm_metadata. /v1/messages, which takes the generic path, reads litellm_metadata. No original_function falls back to metadata.
My three checks still hold:
No raise or delay. The import is guarded. getattr(..., '__name__', None) handles a function with no name, and anything stranger is still caught by emit's try, which falls back to the signalError line.
No content or keys logged. The line has the same seven keys as before. The new test asserts the unstamped bucket's value never appears in the line.
Metric name. It is unchanged and still matches log-metrics.json.
The CodeRabbit Minor in review 5663471360 is answered and fixed at this head (PR comment, 07:47Z). Every CodeRabbit item I can see on the PR is resolved.

Re-stamp at e3a10c8 (delta from c78b6b7: model_fallback_signal.py and its test, nothing else).
What I checked
_metadata(kwargs) now picks the bucket from original_function.__name__ through get_router_metadata_variable_name, not from which buckets the request carries. That is the behaviour the CodeRabbit Minor pointed at: a chat completion carrying litellm_metadata now reads metadata, and /v1/messages still reads litellm_metadata.
The fallback copy of the helper (used only when litellm.router_utils.batch_utils fails to import) has the marker list batch, generic_api_call, _acreate_batch, file, _ageneric_api_call_with_fallbacks. _ageneric_api_call_with_fallbacks_anthropic_messages_attempt matches via generic_api_call, and _acompletion matches nothing, so both fixtures resolve as the tests expect.
Python suite, run with the signal path as the test's argument (python3 -I <test> <signal file>): 14/14 OK at e3a10c8.
Mutant 2, _metadata always reads litellm_metadata: 5 failures, including test_a_chat_completion_reads_metadata_even_beside_a_litellm_metadata and test_without_a_router_function_the_hop_is_read_from_metadata. Both new tests bite.
Both mutants restored with git checkout, and the restored file passes 14/14.
Non-blocking
The fallback copy of get_router_metadata_variable_name is hand-mirrored from batch_utils.py:155 and is not verified here, because litellm is not installed in this environment. It only runs when the import fails, so it cannot diverge in production while the import works. If the marker list ever changes upstream, this copy will drift silently. A pin-matched test that imports the real helper would close that.
CI on this head was still running when I checked. This verdict covers the code only.

Tier 2 (lily-shen, 10-27): the callback runs inside the live LiteLLM proxy on every model call. Gates: Sable (Haiku) and lumen (non-Haiku), both PASS at c78b6b7, re-stamp asked at e3a10c8. Hand press, since it touches

k8s/helm/commonly/files/litellm/model_fallback_signal.py: a third LiteLLM callback. At every fallback hop the v1.106.2 router callslog_success_fallback_eventorlog_failure_fallback_eventon each CustomLogger. There is no alert policy yet; that one is SRE's to wire.docs/development/LITELLM.mdparagraph.Who it counts: native hosted turns send
disable_fallbacks(D81), so every line comes from another caller: the moltbot gateway, commonly-bot, or platform features throughllmService. Not in this slice: recording the served model on the run (TASK-028, native AgentRun turns) and showing it in Agent Settings (TASK-030).
