feat(runtime): record the model that answered each native turn (TASK-028) - #2835
Tier 1. Gate: Sable (Haiku), PASS at 72fcda9. No k8s/ changes.
TASK-028 is slice A of TASK-003. Until now an AgentRun turn recorded only the model group it requested. Each native turn now also records the group that answered it.
What changes
AgentRun turns gain two fields:
servedModel: the group LiteLLM names in x-litellm-model-group, or the body's model when the header is absent.
fallbacks: x-litellm-attempted-fallbacks, stored only when it is above zero. It says that a fallback happened, not how many hops: on the real router a two-hop chain returns 1, the outermost hop's depth. servedModelOf in nativeRuntimeService.ts reads both values.
boundAgentRun and GET /api/pods/:podId/runs/:runId carry both fields. Older turns have neither.
The spend alarm prices a turn by servedModel ?? model. A fallback is billed at the price of the group that served it.
The run trace shows "Asked X, answered by Y" when the two differ, and one model when they're the same (en + zh-CN). requested and served are declared as opaque in the zh spacing guard.
What it does and doesn't catch
Native calls send disable_fallbacks: true (D81). I checked that the real 1.106.2 Router honours it: with OpenRouter's 404 for Nemotron, the call raises NotFoundError and makes no fallback hop. So today servedModel == model on every native turn.
The record shows a fallback if the flag is ever overridden. The proxy lets a key's metadata do that: litellm_pre_call_utils.py:1842 replaces the request's disable_fallbacks with the key's value. Nothing in this repo sets that metadata, but I haven't checked the live keys.
The row also asked for a backend {alarm: 'model_fallback', source: 'native'} log line. I left it out. #2831's LiteLLM callback already logs every fallback hop at the source, including native ones, and the model_fallback metric counts lines from the litellm container. A second line from the backend would add nothing the alert can see.
Proof
nativeRuntimeService.servedModel.test.js drives runAgent with real axios against a local HTTP server that answers with the proxy's headers:
A fallback turn (requested openrouter/nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b:free, group header deepseek-v4-flash, one attempted fallback) records requested and served separately with fallbacks: 1, and the request still carries disable_fallbacks: true.
A normal turn records the two equal.
The header-less cases fall back to the body's model, then to the requested model.
runTraces.test.js: both fields survive save (the pre-validate bound) and come back from the route, and an older turn returns neither.
spendAlarmService.test.js: a DeepSeek-requested, Sonnet-served turn is priced at Sonnet's rate. An older turn is still priced by model.
V2RunTrace.test.tsx: en and zh-CN show both models on a fallback turn and one model otherwise.
Mutants:
dropping the field from the bound fails the route test;
pricing by $turns.model fails the spend test;
ignoring the group header fails 1 of the 3 native tests;
storing raw hops fails 2 of them.
Node 22: the 47 unit suites that touch AgentRun, the native runtime, the spend alarm or the run trace pass, 637/637. Frontend trace + i18n: 45/45. tsc -p tsconfig.build.json is clean.
Next: TASK-030, the gateway per-turn record and the Agent Settings display.
…028)
An AgentRun turn kept only the model group it requested. Each turn now
also records servedModel, the group LiteLLM names in x-litellm-model-group
(the body's model when the header is absent), and fallbacks, the hop count
from x-litellm-attempted-fallbacks when it is above zero.
Native calls send disable_fallbacks (D81), and the 1.106.2 router honours
it, so servedModel equals model today. The record is what shows it if
something overrides the flag; the proxy lets a key's metadata set
disable_fallbacks for every request on that key.
The trace bound and the run-trace route carry both fields. The spend
alarm prices a turn by servedModel, falling back to model for older
turns. The run trace shows "Asked X, answered by Y" when they differ.
Tested against a local HTTP server that answers with the proxy's
headers, so the header names are read as they arrive.

Run turns now record the responding model and positive fallback-hop count. The run-trace API and frontend expose the model metadata. Daily spend aggregation uses the responding model when available.
Turns gain optional servedModel and fallbacks fields. The runtime selects the served model from the model-group header, response body, or requested model, in that order. It records a fallback count only when the header contains a positive integer. Tests cover these response sources and the outgoing request.
Bounded turns and run-trace responses include the optional fields. A route test checks saved turns with and without optional values.

Daily spend aggregation uses servedModel when present and falls back to model otherwise. Tests cover both cases.
Display requested and served models frontend/src/v2/components/V2RunTrace.tsx, frontend/src/i18n/locales/en.json, frontend/src/i18n/locales/zh-CN.json, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2RunTrace.test.tsx, frontend/src/i18n/__tests__/zhNumberUnitSpacing.test.ts
The run-trace view displays both model names when they differ. It displays one name when they match or no served model is provided. English and Chinese translations and tests cover this display.

When neither x-litellm-model-group nor the body named a model, the turn
recorded the requested group as served. That was an inference, not a
measurement. Leave the field unset instead. The spend grouping, the trace
route and the run trace already fall back to the requested model when it
is absent, so pricing and display don't change.

Re-gate of #2835 at 72fcda9 (TASK-028), after the unset-served note.
No inferred served model. When neither the header nor the body names a model, servedModel stays unset; servedModelOf no longer takes the requested model. The test now asserts servedModel: undefined for that case.
Readers checked at 72fcda9: spend grouping uses $ifNull to turns.model; the trace route passes an absent value through as undefined; V2RunTrace shows "served" only when the field is set and differs from model; agentRunLimitstext() maps a missing value to undefined. Older turns without the field read and price as before.
Suites:nativeRuntimeService.servedModel, runTraces, and spendAlarmService pass 33/33 on a fresh npm ci in a scratch worktree at 72fcda9.
Not run: the frontend V2RunTrace and i18n tests (no frontend node_modules here).

Add a real AgentRun persistence round-trip test.
turnOf reads savedRun.turns from the mocked run result. It does not verify that Mongoose stores and restores servedModel and fallbacks in nested turns. Save an AgentRun through the real model and read it back with both fields populated.
As per path instructions: “For changed fields crossing persistence and read layers, verify that the writing schema declares the exact paths and that tests round-trip through the real model.”

Add a persistence round-trip test alongside the `turnOf` test that creates and
saves an `AgentRun` using the real Mongoose model, then reads it back and
verifies `servedModel` and `fallbacks` in a nested `turns` entry. Confirm the
schema declares both exact nested paths so the test exercises actual storage and
restoration rather than the mocked `savedRun.turns` result.
