chore(repo): clear dead files from the repo root - #2861
D123: the repo root carried files that look unprofessional on a public repo and that nothing loads. This removes 21 of them and keeps the two that are in use.
Removed, and why nothing loads them
Each name was grepped across Dockerfiles, .github/, k8s/, scripts/, dev.sh, install.sh, prod.sh, the compose files and package.json, then across the whole repo.
All 13 are empty files (blob e69de29), committed in bulk on 2026-02-01 and 2026-02-14. No reference anywhere.
LINT_SETUP_SUMMARY.md
Last touched 2025-05. docs/development/LINTING.md and lint-gate-state.md cover lint now. No reference.
UIUX_TASK_BOARD.md
A finished 2026-04-11 sprint board with a laptop path in it. No reference.
discord-logo.png, pod-chat-mobile.png
No reference.
run-cuz-provision.sh
Hardcodes one pod id and the dead api-dev host. No reference.
cloudbuild.backend.yaml, cloudbuild.frontend.yaml
gcloud builds submit is blocked by the dev project's org policy; Deploy Dev builds every image. Only a historical runbook mentions them.
download-ca.js
Fetched one provider's CA into the repo root, while .env.example points PG_SSL_CA_PATH at /app/certs/ca.pem. The two DEPLOYMENT.md steps that ran it now say to point PG_SSL_CA_PATH at your provider's certificate.
Kept
external/: deploy-dev.yml and deploy-staging.yml build external/commonly-agent-services, tests.yml runs its tests, and the compose files mount it.
.cursor/rules/commonly.mdc: un-ignored on purpose in .gitignore, and served by frontend/src/v2/utils/cursorProjectRule.ts.
So they don't come back
.gitignore now ignores the 11 placeholder names at the root (anchored with /), and .vscode/ / .idea/ lose their trailing slash: the dir-only form is why the empty .idea and .vscode files could be committed, the same trap the node_modules comment already records. git ls-files -ci --exclude-standard is empty, so no tracked file becomes ignored.
Not in scope: backend/docker-compose.dev.yml is also an empty file, and .codex/settings.local.json is a committed local permission file. Both sit outside the root and are left for their owners.
Removes 21 root files that nothing loads (checked against Dockerfiles,
.github/, k8s/, scripts/, dev.sh, install.sh, prod.sh, the compose files
and package.json, plus a whole-repo grep):
- 13 empty files committed in bulk in February: .bashrc,
.bash_profile, .zshrc, .zprofile, .profile, .gitconfig, .ripgreprc,
.idea, .vscode, config, hooks, objects, refs. .gitignore now ignores
them at the root, and .vscode/.idea lose their trailing slash so a
file of that name is ignored too.
- LINT_SETUP_SUMMARY.md (2025-05; docs/development/LINTING.md and
lint-gate-state.md cover it) and UIUX_TASK_BOARD.md (a finished
April sprint board).
- discord-logo.png and pod-chat-mobile.png, referenced nowhere.
- run-cuz-provision.sh: one pod id, the dead api-dev host.
- cloudbuild.backend.yaml / cloudbuild.frontend.yaml: gcloud builds is
blocked by org policy; Deploy Dev builds the images.
- download-ca.js fetched one provider's CA to the repo root; the
DEPLOYMENT.md steps now say to point PG_SSL_CA_PATH at your
provider's certificate.
Kept: external/ (deploy-dev and deploy-staging build
external/commonly-agent-services, tests.yml runs its tests) and
.cursor/rules/commonly.mdc (un-ignored on purpose, served by
frontend/src/v2/utils/cursorProjectRule.ts).

Walkthrough
The change updates repository ignore rules and PostgreSQL SSL setup instructions. It removes the CA download script, two Cloud Build configurations, a provisioning script, and two documentation files.
Changes: Repository and deployment cleanup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Ignore patterns .gitignore
The .vscode and .idea patterns now match files and directories at any level. New root-anchored rules ignore named configuration files and paths.
Local and production instructions now direct users to place the provider CA certificate at ./ca.pem and enable SSL for external PostgreSQL. They specify the Compose mount path and PG_SSL_CA_PATH. The CA download script is removed.
Both Cloud Build configurations are removed. The runbook records the frontend configuration’s removal and updates its note about the GCP project and Artifact Registry path.
Other removed artifacts LINT_SETUP_SUMMARY.md, UIUX_TASK_BOARD.md, run-cuz-provision.sh
The lint setup guide, UI/UX task board, and cuz provisioning script are removed.

Remove the deleted Cloud Build reference from the runbook.
The runbook's operator step invokes deploy-dev.yml, which builds the frontend directly with Docker. It does not use cloudbuild.frontend.yaml. Both references therefore point readers to a deleted, non-actionable file and line 94 asks them to review a nonexistent hard-coded configuration.
Suggested fix
-- `.github/workflows/deploy-dev.yml` + `cloudbuild.frontend.yaml` —+- `.github/workflows/deploy-dev.yml` — `docker build frontend` sets+ `REACT_APP_API_URL=https://api.commonly.me`.
`REACT_APP_API_URL=https://api.commonly.me` (frontend build arg).
...
-- **Pre-existing (not from this branch):** `cloudbuild.frontend.yaml` line 19- hard-codes a GCP project id + AR path in the public repo. Flagging per the- no-infra-leak-in-public-repo rule — worth moving to a substitution/secret in a- separate cleanup, independent of this migration.

Haiku gate on #2861 at 4be5e19. CI has no failing checks and the merge state is CLEAN.
Live references to deleted files: one missed reference. docs/runbooks/domain-migration-commonly-me.md points at cloudbuild.frontend.yaml at lines 41 and 94, and this PR deletes that file. The runbook is a doc the criterion covers, so the pointer should be fixed or marked as removed. A code search on main finds no other references to the 21 deleted names outside DEPLOYMENT.md, which this PR already fixes. I did not check dotfile names (.bashrc, .zshrc, etc.) for references.
.gitignore: the new root entries (/config, /hooks, /objects, /refs, the dotfiles) match no tracked path at the PR head. The .vscode and .idea lines drop their trailing slash, so they now match files as well as directories; nothing tracked is affected.
DEPLOYMENT.md: the ./ca.pem step matches docker-compose.yml at this head, which mounts ./ca.pem:/app/ca.pem:ro and sets PG_SSL_CA_PATH=/app/ca.pem.
Fix for 1: rewrite or drop the cloudbuild.frontend.yaml pointer in domain-migration-commonly-me.md (lines 41 and 94), then re-gate.

Haiku re-gate on #2861 at 3e0b6fe, against my HOLD at 4be5e19. The delta is one docs file, domain-migration-commonly-me.md, +7 -5.
The two cloudbuild.frontend.yaml pointers now read as history. Line 41 says the file was removed in #2861, and line 96 is a dated note that the file "now" uses a placeholder. Neither points at a live path. The gap I raised is closed.
Checks 2 and 3 are unchanged from my HOLD review and still hold: the .gitignore entries match no tracked path, and docker-compose.yml mounts ./ca.pem at /app/ca.pem as DEPLOYMENT.md describes. CI has no failing checks.
Not checked at this head: the dotfile names. The GitHub code-search API was rate-limited, so I could not confirm that only ~/ paths reference them.
