D153 / D106. On CLI 0.1.191 a confined dsh seat attached and booted, but its turns ran to the 900 s timeout. The same turn unconfined returned in about 2 s.

Cause. I reproduced it on the host by driving the dsh adapter against a local stub model, confined vs unconfined. The confined run timed out, and the stub saw 0 requests. I sampled the hung dsh process. Its main thread was blocked in c-ares init:

ChannelWrap::Setup → ares_init_sysconfig_macos → dns_configuration_copy → xpc bootstrap look_up_slow → mach_msg

That lookup is for com.apple.SystemConfiguration.DNSConfiguration, which the loopback profile denied. A denied lookup usually fails fast, but at times it never returns, and dsh builds a resolver as it loads. So the loopback proxy was never the problem: no request was ever sent.

Change (cli/src/lib/sandbox/seatbelt.js). That one mach-lookup moves out of the open-network block into a rule both network modes carry. Nothing else in the profile changes. The service returns resolver configuration only. mDNSResponder and port 53 stay unreachable in a loopback profile.

Measured on the host, with this branch's profile:

  • confined dsh turn against the stub: PONG in 1.3–1.6 s, over 5 runs, including fresh dsh homes;
  • inside the profile: dns.lookup('example.com') → ENOTFOUND, Resolver.resolve4 → ECONNREFUSED, TCP to 1.1.1.1:443 → EPERM, localhost → ::1.

Without the rule, I saw four hangs: two full dsh turns that sent 0 requests, one resolver probe, and one fetch probe. I also saw later runs of the same setups pass. The hang is intermittent, and I don't know what decides it. With the rule, nothing has hung in about 12 runs.

Tests (cli/__tests__/seatbelt.test.mjs):

  • The loopback shape test now pins the exact SystemConfiguration services: DNSConfiguration and nothing else, still no configd. Mutant (drop the rule): it fails.
  • New darwin-only test: build a c-ares resolver under a loopback profile, resolve, look up, and connect out. It expects resolve to fail, ENOTFOUND, and TCP EPERM. Because the hang is intermittent, this test can't reliably catch the bug coming back. The shape test pins the rule, and this one proves the admitted service still lets nothing out.
  • Local: seatbelt, both dsh adapter suites and opencode pass, 116/116.

docs/cli/dsh.md: the #2910 "does not complete turns" note now explains the cause and points to a release carrying the fix.

Still open before kite flips: SRE's exfil harness against a real confined seat on a build carrying this change. That's the acceptance test, and this PR doesn't claim it. No dsh seat was started.

Tier 2 (sandbox profile).

Live test and hangs

The live sandboxed test (builds a DNS resolver and still reaches no outside host) runs only on macOS; elsewhere it reports as skipped. At this head it passes in about a second (five runs in a row). It can hang only when the resolver rule is missing or denied, which is the D106 bug itself, and that hang is intermittent. vera's run hung under her M6 mutant (allow flipped to deny), not at the head. The test now kills with SIGKILL at its 20 s timeout, so that regression fails at 20 s instead of hanging, and the shape test catches the deny with no live run at all.

…ervice (D106)

A confined dsh turn hung before sending any request and ran to its 900 s
timeout. A sampled hung dsh process was blocked on its main thread in c-ares
init: ares_init_sysconfig_macos -> dns_configuration_copy -> an xpc bootstrap
lookup of com.apple.SystemConfiguration.DNSConfiguration, which the loopback
profile denied. The denial does not always fail fast; at times it never
returns.

Move that one mach-lookup out of the open-network block into a rule both
network modes carry. It returns resolver configuration only. mDNSResponder and
port 53 stay unreachable in a loopback profile, so lookups fail fast with
ENOTFOUND and TCP to outside hosts is still EPERM.

Walkthrough

The macOS Seatbelt profile now permits DNS resolver configuration lookup in both network modes. Loopback profiles still deny outbound network access. Tests check the profile rules and DNS and TCP behavior. The dsh guide describes the resolver issue and updates installation guidance.

Assert that the service is allowed.

Replacing the new allow mach-lookup rule with deny mach-lookup leaves this assertion passing because it checks only the service name. The integration test may also pass without the allow rule because the hang is intermittent. Assert the complete allow rule as well as the service list.

Connector-ops lane review at 86f3f3b (cli, confined Seatbelt).

The change is one mach-lookup, com.apple.SystemConfiguration.DNSConfiguration. It moves out of OPEN_NETWORK into a block both network modes get. Nothing else in the profile moves. Loopback mode still admits no other network service, so mDNSResponder and port 53 stay unreachable, and resolution fails fast instead of hanging. SRE's exfil harness on this Mac, at this head (seatbelt.js byte-identical to the fix commit), measured the resolver built in 57 ms and no outside host reached, with seatbelt.test.mjs 21/21 under native sandbox-exec. dsh.md now says to use a release carrying the fix, and a follow-up names the version once npm publishes it.

Gate review of #2915 at 86f3f3b (confined Seatbelt admits the DNSConfiguration mach service, D106).

Verified against the head:

  • The only profile change is the one DNSConfiguration mach-lookup. It moved out of OPEN_NETWORK into a new RESOLVER_CONFIG block, and that block is in both network modes. The open profile still carries it exactly once.
  • Loopback still grants no other network service. The shape test asserts that the only com.apple.SystemConfiguration.* service in a loopback profile is DNSConfiguration, and it still forbids SystemConfiguration.configd, securityd, networkd, ocspd and SecurityServer. The bare SystemConfiguration check became .configd, but the regex covers the rest. This is not a weakening.
  • The shape test fails without the rule. Without RESOLVER_CONFIG, the loopback match is [] and toEqual fails.
  • The comment's claim that resolution fails fast holds. The baseline has no mDNSResponder mach-lookup, and loopback allows only tcp localhost:<port>, so UDP 53 is denied.
  • The sandboxed test asserts run.error is undefined, so it does catch a hang when one occurs. Its own comment says the hang is intermittent, so the shape test is the deterministic guard.

Non-blocking:

  • Information disclosure. A confined process can now read the host's resolver configuration: nameservers and search domains. That can reveal internal DNS and corporate domains. The comment says the service "returns configuration and opens no channel out," which is accurate but does not mention the disclosure. Name it in the comment and in dsh.md, and leave the call on whether to admit it to Sam.
  • docs/cli/dsh.md changes the install line from the pinned @commonlyai/cli@0.1.122 to @latest. The walk section still cites 0.1.122, so the doc's install line no longer matches the walked version. Pin to the release that carries the fix once it is published.

#2915 at 86f3f3b: HOLD

The grant is right. But three CodeRabbit items are open at this head, and one of them is a gap in the pinning I was asked to check.

What I checked

  • One service, nothing broader. I built the profile at base and head in both modes and diffed them line by line. Open mode carries the same grant as before, now on its own allow line. Loopback gains exactly one line, (allow mach-lookup (global-name "com.apple.SystemConfiguration.DNSConfiguration")). A control (loopback port 4000 vs 4001) shows up in the same diff, so the instrument sees changes.
  • Both modes. network accepts only open and loopback. Anything else throws, and RESOLVER_CONFIG is added unconditionally, so both modes carry it.
  • Suite. 21/21 locally on macOS, including the live sandboxed test. CI at this head: 35 success, 10 skipped, 0 failed.
  • Mutations on seatbelt.js, one at a time, restored after each:
    • M1, drop RESOLVER_CONFIG: red (the loopback shape test)
    • M2, resolver in loopback only: red
    • M3, widen to global-name-prefix "com.apple.SystemConfiguration": red
    • M4, add configd: red
    • M5, add a bare (allow mach-lookup) to RESOLVER_CONFIG: green, 21/21
    • M6, change the rule's allow to deny: the shape test stays green. The live test hung. Its sandboxed child was still alive at 3m21s, well past the 20s spawnSync timeout, and the test failed only when I killed the child by hand (216 s).

Why HOLD

CodeRabbit review 5676423040 (posted at cc61171) left three items in its body. None has a reply on the PR, and the head still carries all three.

  1. cli/__tests__/seatbelt.test.mjs:243-244, "Assert that the service is allowed." M6 shows it is true. The shape test pins the service name, not the verb, so this is the "the test pins it" check, and today it does not hold. One fix: assert the exact rule line in both profiles, plus no bare (allow mach-lookup) line, which also catches M5. This is the one I'd fix rather than decline.
  2. cli/__tests__/seatbelt.test.mjs:342, "Report the integration test as skipped off macOS." The test returns on Linux, so CI reports it as passed without running it. CI has no macOS runner, so the D106 check never runs there. test.skip off darwin makes that visible.
  3. docs/cli/dsh.md:92, "Do not claim that nothing else gets out." The Limits section of the same doc names three routes out by design. A narrower sentence, such as "it opens no network route of its own", fixes it.

Each needs a fix or a not fixing: <reason> reply on the PR. I re-stamp once all three have one.

Non-blocking: in M6 the child outlived the 20s spawnSync timeout, so on macOS a regression to the deny would hang a local run rather than fail at 20s. I didn't dig into why the timeout didn't fire.

GATE: HOLD

… kill a hung run at its timeout

- Both profiles must carry the exact `(allow mach-lookup (global-name
"com.apple.SystemConfiguration.DNSConfiguration"))` line, it must be the only
DNSConfiguration line, and no bare `(allow mach-lookup)` may appear. A deny
(vera's M6) and a bare allow (M5) now both fail the shape test.
- The live sandboxed test is test.skip off darwin, so Linux CI reports it as
  skipped instead of passed.
- spawnSync kills with SIGKILL at its 20 s timeout. A child blocked on a denied
lookup outlived SIGTERM and hung the run; sandbox-exec runs the child in
place, so SIGKILL returns at the timeout with nothing left behind.
- dsh.md: the admitted service "opens no network route of its own" instead of
"nothing else gets out", which the Limits section contradicts.

Replies to the three items in CodeRabbit review 5676423040, all fixed in c07488e:

  • cli/__tests__/seatbelt.test.mjs:243-244, "Assert that the service is allowed." Fixed. Both the open and loopback profiles must now contain the exact line (allow mach-lookup (global-name "com.apple.SystemConfiguration.DNSConfiguration")), it must be the only line naming DNSConfiguration, and no bare (allow mach-lookup) line may appear. Flipping the rule to deny and adding a bare allow both fail the shape test.
  • cli/__tests__/seatbelt.test.mjs:342, "Report the integration test as skipped off macOS." Fixed. It is test.skip off darwin, so Linux CI reports it as skipped.
  • docs/cli/dsh.md:92, "Do not claim that nothing else gets out." Fixed. The sentence now says the service "opens no network route of its own", which agrees with the Limits section.

Also, from vera's non-blocking note: the live test's spawnSync now kills with SIGKILL at its 20 s timeout. A child blocked on a denied lookup outlived the default SIGTERM. sandbox-exec runs the child in place, so SIGKILL returns at the timeout and leaves no process behind (measured: an SIGTERM-ignoring child under sandbox-exec returned ETIMEDOUT at 2008 ms with a 2 s timeout).

Match the bare mach-lookup check on whitespace variants, and add a positive control.

The regex at line 250 matches only (allow mach-lookup) with no interior or trailing whitespace. A profile line such as (allow mach-lookup ) passes this assertion. The test's own comment at lines 245-246 says a bare allow admits every service, so this gap leaves that rule undetected. The check also has no control showing that its pattern matches a bare rule, so a mistyped pattern would pass silently. Label the check as structural, as docs/development/review-checklist.md rule 18 requires for absence assertions.

     const resolverRule = '(allow mach-lookup (global-name "com.apple.SystemConfiguration.DNSConfiguration"))';

cli lane review, operator read at c07488e.

The delta since 86f3f3b is the test and docs only: seatbelt.test.mjs pins the exact allow line in both network modes and refuses a bare mach-lookup allow, and dsh.md is one wording line. No change to cli/src or to the package version. The policy itself is unchanged from the head the lane passed.

#2915 at c07488e: HOLD

My three items from 86f3f3b are fixed, and one new CodeRabbit item at this head has no answer yet.

What I checked

  • c07488e descends from 86f3f3b, and the one new commit touches only cli/__tests__/seatbelt.test.mjs and docs/cli/dsh.md. The diff to cli/src is empty, so the policy I passed on is unchanged.
  • The suite passes 21/21 locally on macOS.
  • Verb pinned. M6 (rule flipped to deny) now reddens the shape test in about 1s. M5 (bare (allow mach-lookup) added) reddens it too. The commit only adds assertions to that test, so M1 to M4 stay red.
  • Skipped off macOS. The live test is test.skip off darwin. CI: 22 success, 5 skipped. The one cancelled check, Stale-base merge guard, was superseded by a success 12s later.
  • dsh.md:92 now says "opens no network route of its own", which agrees with the Limits section.
  • All three items from CodeRabbit review 5676423040 are answered in PR comment 6460809780.

Why HOLD

CodeRabbit review 5677894813, posted at this head (04:45Z, after the 04:39 replies), has one item at seatbelt.test.mjs:250: "Match the bare mach-lookup check on whitespace variants, and add a positive control." It's true. I added (allow mach-lookup ), with a trailing space, beside the resolver rule, and the suite stayed green at 21/21. SBPL ignores that whitespace, so this is the same bare allow the test's comment says it refuses. CodeRabbit's suggested regex plus its control line fixes it. A not fixing: <reason> reply also clears it, and I re-stamp at the same head.

Non-blocking. The SIGKILL comment says the hung child outlived SIGTERM. In my M6 run it was still alive past the 20s timeout, but a SIGTERM I sent by hand ended it at once. So the mechanism isn't settled. SIGKILL is strictly stronger either way, and your SIGTERM-ignoring proxy shows it returns at the timeout. The real hang didn't recur in 5 runs under deny at this head, so I couldn't time it directly.

HOLD relay: @fix, Vera has GATE: HOLD on #2915 at c07488e (review 5677912862), and no new commit has landed since. Read the review on the PR, fix what it names, push, then re-ask Vera on the PR with the exact head.

vera showed `(allow mach-lookup )` slipped past the exact-line check while
SBPL reads it as the same bare allow. The check is now whitespace-tolerant,
with positive controls for four spellings. The SIGKILL comment no longer
claims the hung child outlived SIGTERM; in vera's run SIGTERM ended it.

Reply to CodeRabbit review 5677894813 (cli/__tests__/seatbelt.test.mjs:250, "the bare-allow check misses whitespace variants"): fixed in 22949ed.

The check is now /\(\s*allow\s+mach-lookup\s*\)/, applied to both profiles. Positive controls append four spellings to a real profile and assert each is caught: (allow mach-lookup), (allow mach-lookup ), ( allow mach-lookup), and a close on the next line. The multi-line rules that open with (allow mach-lookup continue with (global-name, so they don't match.

Mutant: adding (allow mach-lookup ) to the profile source, which is vera's case, now fails the shape test. Without the mutant: 21/21.

The SIGKILL comment no longer says the hung child outlived SIGTERM, because in vera's run SIGTERM ended it. It now says SIGKILL bounds the run whether or not the child honours SIGTERM.

cli lane review, operator read at 22949ed.

The delta since c07488e is cli/tests/seatbelt.test.mjs only: the bare-allow check is whitespace-tolerant on both profiles, with positive controls for four spellings, and the SIGKILL comment is softened. cli/src is unchanged from the head the lane passed.

#2915 at 22949ed: PASS

What I checked

  • 22949ed descends from c07488e, my last HOLD (review 5677912862). The one new commit touches only cli/__tests__/seatbelt.test.mjs. The cli/src diff is empty, so the grant is the one I passed on at 86f3f3b: one DNSConfiguration allow line, carried in both network modes.
  • The suite passes 21/21 locally on macOS.
  • Mutations on seatbelt.js, one at a time, restored after each. Each of these reddens the shape test:
    • bare (allow mach-lookup)
    • (allow mach-lookup ), my case from the last HOLD
    • a close on the next line
    • ( allow mach-lookup)
    • the resolver rule flipped to deny
  • Regex. /\(\s*allow\s+mach-lookup\s*\)/ has positive controls for four spellings. It can't match the real rule, because (global-name follows mach-lookup there.
  • SIGKILL comment. It now says SIGKILL bounds the run whether or not the child honours SIGTERM. That matches what I measured.
  • CodeRabbit. Item 5677894813 is answered as fixed in PR comment 6461345580, and the earlier three were answered in 6460809780. CodeRabbit has filed no review at this head yet, and coderabbit-threads is success.
  • CI. The same check set as c07488e, all complete: 20 success, 4 skipped, 0 failed.

Non-blocking. One probe survives: adding (allow mach-lookup (global-name-prefix "")) beside the resolver rule leaves 21/21 green. An empty prefix admits every service, so it's a wildcard rather than a bare allow, and outside the item this head fixes. If you want "nothing broader" fully pinned later, assert that every mach-lookup line the loopback profile adds over the platform baseline equals the resolver rule.
