fix(inspector): attention line and roster stop showing agentName (TASK-551) - #2992
TASK-551 items (a) and (b), split from #2990. Both let an agent's raw identifier reach the inspector when the agent has no curated name. Branched from main (base 8660da989). It touches no resolver code, so it does not depend on #2990.
Attention line (frontend/src/v2/components/V2Inspector.tsx): labelForAttentionActor matched the actor on profile.displayName, then returned the raw actorName on a miss. AgentProfile declares no displayName field (backend/models/AgentProfile.ts), so that match does not succeed. It now matches the actor with matchesAgent, the same matcher agentState uses, and names that agent through labelForAgent. An unmatched actor gets the generic label.
Roster fallback (backend/routes/registry/helpers.ts:485-488): with no User row, the listing returned profile.name || installation.displayName || agentName, so an install with no curated name carried its agentName. A scoped name equal to the agentName is now dropped. With no curated name the listing carries an empty name, and the inspector shows its generic label. The User-row path is unchanged.
Profile branch (labelForAgent): a profile name equal to the agentName is skipped.
Tests
Red on the base (8660da989): V2Inspector.test.tsx 3 failed, 18 passed of 21, all three new tests failing. registry.roster-display-label.test.js 4 failed, 1 passed of 5. The curated-name test passes on both, by design.
Green on this head (cfe5c88ab): full frontend Jest, 190 of 190 suites and 1,923 of 1,923 tests. registry.roster-display-label.test.js passes in the full backend run.
Full backend Jest on this head: 8,417 passed, 10 failed, 85 skipped, in 4 suites.
byo-runtime-configuration (5) and byo-handoff-memory (2) fail with Cannot find package 'commander' and '@commonlyai/seats' from cli/src. The cli dependencies are not installed in this worktree. Not related to this change.
hostedMcpConnect.rateLimit (1) and discord.webhook.hardening (2) are flaky. hostedMcpConnect failed once alone on this branch and passed 6 of 6 reruns (3 here, 3 on the base). discord failed 3 tests alone on the base and passed alone on this branch. Neither imports the registry helpers. Cause not established.
Lint and types
Frontend npm run typecheck and backend npm run tsc:check: no errors. Backend npm run lint:ts: 0 errors (1,963 warnings, repo-wide).
ESLint on the changed files has the same findings as the base. Frontend: the two i18next/no-literal-string errors in V2Inspector.tsx (lines 243–244 here, 236–237 on the base) and two react/jsx-filename-extension warnings. Backend helpers.ts: 6 warnings on both.
Not in this PR
resolveAgentDisplayLabel still returns instanceId when a User row has no botMetadata.displayName (backend/utils/agentDisplayLabel.ts, step 2). A seat in that state still shows its instance id in the inspector. Not changed here.
labelForAgent's profile branch reads profile.displayName, which AgentProfile does not declare, so it likely never fires on real payloads. Not traced further.
getOrCreateAgentUser names a seat with no displayName after its type's officialDisplayName (agentIdentityService.ts 518, 580, 617), for example 'Codex' for codex. Limiting that to the default instance is a separate change.
V2YourTeamPage (399, 596) falls back to the roster name, which is the agentName, when displayName is empty. Untouched here.
Other agentName fallbacks, not traced: V2Thread.tsx 194, V2ConnectorTools.tsx 337 and 944, ChatRoom.tsx 326 and 332, AgentsHub.tsx 708–709 and 1162, V2AgentSettingsPage.tsx 228 and 249.
Two seats with the same agentName: the attention label names the first roster match, as agentState does.
An attention item named its actor by the raw actorName when no profile
name matched it. A profile name equal to the agentName also passed
through as the label, and the backend roster's scoped-name fallback
ended in the agentName, so a seat with no User row could show it.
- labelForAttentionActor matches the actor the way agentState does, then
names that agent. An unmatched actor gets the generic label.
- labelForAgent skips a profile name equal to the agentName. The roster
payload sends profile.displayName, so this covers that path too.
- buildAgentInstallationPayload uses a scoped name only when it differs
from the agentName. The User-row path is unchanged.

Roster payloads and the V2 inspector now avoid displaying an agent’s runtime name as a fallback label. Attention actors use agent matching to resolve labels, with a generic label for unmatched actors.
When no user is available, the roster payload selects a nonempty profile or installation name that differs from agentName. If neither qualifies, it returns an empty label. Tests cover these selection cases.
Inspector labels and attention actors frontend/src/v2/components/V2Inspector.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2Inspector.test.tsx
The inspector skips profile names equal to agentName. Attention actors are matched with matchesAgent; unmatched actors use the generic Agent label. Tests cover matched, unmatched, and fallback labels.
Team-Commonly/commonly#741 — This change filters some raw agent-name fallbacks, but does not implement the issue’s broader per-pod name disambiguation.
The change stops raw agent names from appearing as labels, but the single-agent settings view can show an empty name where the roster shows the curated one. The inspector can also mislabel some attention actors, including human mention authors, who may now appear as "Agent". These are small display issues, so the PR is mergeable once the owner is aware or follows up.

Preserve the User label in the single-agent endpoint.

Preserve the User label in the single-agent endpoint.
pod-agents.ts:491-500 does not pass a User row to this builder. If the profile name equals agentName and the User row has a curated label, the single-agent response now has an empty displayName, while the roster returns the curated label. Load and pass the User row in the single-agent endpoint, and test both responses. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the single-agent endpoint that builds the response with scopedDisplayName
so it loads and passes the User row to the builder, preserving a curated User
label when the profile name matches agentName. Add coverage confirming the
single-agent response and roster both return that curated label.

recordMentionedUsers also creates attention items for human authors. An unmatched human mention now displays Agent instead of the author's name. Use the actor identity to distinguish humans from agents before applying the agent fallback. Add a human-mention test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the label selection around labelForAgent so unmatched human mentions
retain the human actor’s name and only agent mentions use the agent fallback.

Normalize the profile name before selecting it.
59-60: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Normalize the profile name before selecting it.
The roster trims profile.name before rejecting an agent-name fallback, but also returns the original profile name. A profile name of scout therefore bypasses this check and renders scout. A whitespace-only name renders a blank label instead of the generic fallback. Trim the profile name before comparing and selecting it. Add tests for both cases. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

In the profile-label logic, trim `agent.profile?.displayName` before comparing
it with `agent.agentName` and selecting `profileLabel`; whitespace-only names
should produce the generic fallback, and names that match after trimming should
not be displayed. Add tests covering both cases.
Match attention actors by actorUserId before using names.
83-83: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Match attention actors by actorUserId before using names.
labelForAttentionActor currently passes only item.actorName to matchesAgent. If two roster entries share that name, find can select the first entry and show the wrong label. The frontend type must expose actorUserId, then the helper should match userId first and use the generic label when a name-only match is ambiguous.

Update V2AttentionItem and labelForAttentionActor to expose and use actorUserId,
matching agents by userId before considering names; when no user ID is
available, return the generic fallback unless exactly one agent matches the
actor name.

Tier 1 gate at cfe5c88 (TASK-551 (a) attention line and (b) roster, from main 8660da9).
Ran in scratch installs at the head. Backend roster test: 5 of 5 pass. Frontend V2Inspector.test.tsx: 21 of 21 pass.
Reverts, each in a scratch copy:
Roster (helpers.ts), old profile || installation || identityFallback chain restored: 4 of 5 roster tests fail. The kept-curated-name test passes, as it should.
Attention line (labelForAttentionActor), legacy profile-only match restored: 2 tests fail, "names an attention item by the agent it matches…" and "names an unmatched attention actor generically…".
Inspector profile skip (labelForAgent), agentName-equal skip removed: "labels an agent whose profile name is only its agentName generically" fails.
Checked:
Attention line: a matched actor is labelled through labelForAgent, and an unmatched one gets the generic t('common.agent'). Neither reads agentName or instanceId as text.
Roster, no User row: the label is the curated name or ''. It is never the agentName, and the client falls back to its generic label.
Roster, User row: it still goes through resolveAgentDisplayLabel, and the resolver never reads botMetadata.agentName as output.
Non-blocking, outside this diff:
With a User row and no curated name, the resolver's step 3 returns username. For a default-instance seat that is the agent type (buildAgentUsername returns the normalized agentType when instanceId is default). So the roster can still show a runtime name such as openclaw through that path. Pre-existing, and the PR says resolver change is out of scope. The test header claims only the no-User case, which is accurate. Worth a follow-up ticket, not a blocker.
