Count the Run-it-here offer when it renders and when it is picked - #3001
TASK-644. Growth's activation script reads hosted-offer-shown and hosted-offer-clicked from byo_telemetry. Both steps were already allowlisted on the server (#2664), but the client only emitted them for the post-issue fallback. The "Run it here" offer on first paint was never counted.
Changes
V2AgentBYO.tsx: hosted-offer-shown recorded once per page view when the hosted chooser or compact hosted form renders on a hosting instance.
V2AgentBYO.tsx: hosted-offer-clicked recorded when the person picks "Run it here" in the chooser, and when the compact hosted submit is pressed.
Tests in V2AgentBYOHostedOffer.test.tsx: first-paint exposure and pick each recorded once per load. Existing expectations now count the first-paint exposure alongside the fallback exposure.
Root-cause answers for the row
(a) Lily's walk found the hosted offer rendering; the gap was the missing emit, not a render condition.
(b) The "connect-agent" choice sends the start message from V2Thread.tsx (CONNECT_START_LABEL). The open-byo link is added at V2Thread.tsx:~451-461, only for the pod creator and only when the message text matches exactly. That link goes to /v2/agents/byo?pod=…, where V2AgentBYO.tsx records page-viewed on mount. A stuck user with no page view means either the link never rendered or the person never clicked it. Prod data is needed to tell which.
Not done here
The headless Playwright check with before/after screenshots is not in this PR. It needs a running v2 stack.

The pick emit is correct, and so is the first-paint emit on the full chooser. Three things block.
1. Five existing suites break.V2AgentBYOFromCard, V2AgentBYOFootnote, V2AgentBYOMachine, V2AgentBYOHosted and V2AgentBYOName mock ../utils/byoTelemetry as { recordByoStep: jest.fn() }.
Inside those suites recordByoStepOnce is undefined. The new effect throws ("recordByoStepOnce is not a function") and the page never renders.
Locally at this head: 5 suites and 49 tests fail.
With the base component (2c53798) the same five suites pass, 68/68.
Frontend tests were still pending in CI when I checked.
Fix: add recordByoStepOnce: jest.fn() to those mocks, or use a partial mock built on jest.requireActual.
2. hosted-offer-shown also fires where "Run it here" isn't on screen.
hostedChooserOnScreen is hosting?.configured && !issued && !hosted && !placed && !reconnectRequest, which doesn't exclude showCompactByo.
From an approved connect card (?name=… from a card) on an instance that hosts, the page renders byo-card-compact. That form has no hosted option, and V2AgentBYOFromCard asserts byo-mode-hosted is absent. The effect still records an exposure; the crash in item 1 is that effect running on this page.
The full chooser renders under !showCompactHosted && !showCompactByo && …, and the compact hosted form under showCompactHosted && …. Deriving the flag from those two render conditions would keep the count tied to what's on screen.
3. The compact-submit click has no test.
With the hosted-offer-clicked emit removed from the byo-hosted-compact button, all 20 V2AgentBYOHostedOffer tests still pass.
V2AgentBYOHosted renders that form but doesn't assert the step.
The other two emits are pinned:
without the first-paint emit, 6 tests fail;
without the pick emit, the new test fails.
Notes that don't block:
recordByoStepOnce dedupes on a module-level set, so it fires once per document load per viewer, not once per mount. page-viewed is once per mount, so a client-side revisit counts a page view but not a second exposure. The PR body says "once per page view", so state whichever is meant.
chooseMode('hosted') records a click on every press of the hosted card, and the server inserts a row for each one. If Growth counts rows rather than distinct users, re-picks inflate clicks.

It now requires that the compact BYO form is not showing.

Otto re-gate (Tier 1) at ca1b887. This replaces my HOLD at a472c58.
All three HOLD items are fixed:
The suites load again. The exposure now goes through recordByoStep behind a per-mount ref, and recordByoStepOnce isn't imported anymore. Locally, all 14 suites that touch BYO telemetry pass (173/173), the five that failed at a472c58 included.
The exposure follows what's on screen.hostedOfferOnScreen now also requires !showCompactByo. It's true exactly when the full chooser renders with hosting configured, or when the compact hosted form renders. One edge: the compact hosted form doesn't check reconnectRequest, so a reconnect in flight under it is skipped. That can only under-count.
The compact submit is pinned. The new test clicks the byo-hosted-compact submit and expects hosted-offer-clicked.
I re-ran the requested checks by removing each emit (results across V2AgentBYOHostedOffer and V2AgentBYOFromCard, 36 tests):
without the first-paint hosted-offer-shown, 7 fail;
without the pick's hosted-offer-clicked, 1 fails;
without the compact submit's hosted-offer-clicked, 1 fails.
hosted-offer-shown fires once per mount, and the StrictMode test still expects one exposure. A new mount counts again (the updated timer/exit case). That now matches page-viewed.
Notes that don't block:
The new test is titled "…and the compact BYO form counts no offer", but it never renders the compact BYO form. Removing && !showCompactByo leaves all 36 tests passing.
V2AgentBYOFromCard already renders that form with hosting configured and mocks recordByoStep. One assertion there would pin it: expect(recordByoStep).not.toHaveBeenCalledWith(expect.anything(), 'hosted-offer-shown').
Alternatively, trim the title.
Removing the per-mount ref fails no test either. It only matters when the offer leaves the screen and comes back within one mount.
Every press of the hosted card still records its own click row (unchanged from a472c58).
CI's Frontend tests were still pending at review time.
