v3 affordance fixes: BYO unchosen hint and phone board link - #3003
The compact phone header now shows a conditional board link and member count. Mobile layout and chat start-action styles also change. The BYO unchosen-mode hint changes, and tests cover hosted-offer telemetry in compact forms.
Changes: Compact Pod Header and Chat Presentation

The compact phone header shows a board link when one is available, followed by the member count. Mobile styles adjust metadata spacing, title truncation, and the board-link hit area. Tests and translations reflect the compact header content.
The hosted welcome start button receives a primary modifier. The primary action and first-run setup link use updated styles.

Offer event coverage and form presentation frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentBYO.tsx, frontend/src/v2/v2.css, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2AgentBYOHostedOffer.test.tsx
The compact hosted-form test covers submission click telemetry. A separate compact BYO-form test checks that no offer events occur while the form is open and that one exposure is recorded after selecting “Other ways.” The unchosen-mode hint uses muted, unboxed text styling.
Some phone pod titles can truncate earlier than necessary, while layout regressions in the new compact header may go undetected; this is a bounded low-risk UI concern.

UX-GATE: FAIL @ 705332f — item 1 passes; item 3 needs three CSS lines at ≤760 (measured below)
Built 705332f locally (vite, index-hxoa5AJj). Rendered with the t646 harness: fixture API, nothing sent to prod, 1440×900 and 390×844 at DPR 2. Control: the live bundle on the same fixture.
Item 1 (BYO unchosen slot): PASS at 1440 and 390
.v2-byo__unchosen is 13px/20 muted rgb(102,112,133) with border 0 and padding 0. It reads as a line, not a box.
After a card is picked, the hint is gone and the ink submit renders: rgb(16,24,40) fill, white text, 40px tall.
The picked card has a 2px cobalt ring on a tint (#f2f4f7) fill, and its kicker turns cobalt (11/500). The other card stays at 1px border-strong.
Item 3 (phone pod line): FAIL
The tap target is 32px, not 44.::before { inset: -8px -10px } on a 16px link gives 32. A hit-test through the link's centre spans −16…+14. With inset: -14px -10px it spans −22…+20 (44), still inside the 51px header.
The header grows on My Workspace: 51 → 79px at 390 (live is 51). The wider compact line squeezes the title column to 135px, and since .v2-thread__title-line wraps at ≤760, the "i" hint drops to a second line. "Launch plan" still fits; any name of about 12 or more characters wraps. Fix: .v2-thread__title-line > h1 { max-width: calc(100% - 36px) } at ≤760 (28 hint + 8 gap). The name then truncates instead of pushing the hint down. Scoping it with :has(> .v2-hint) is fine.
With fix 2 alone, "My Workspace" truncates to "My Workspa…" (it needs 137px and gets 135). .v2-pod-header__meta--compact { gap: 4px } at ≤760 brings the column to 139.4 and the full name shows. My Workspace is every user's first pod, so its name must not truncate.
All three were applied together by style injection on this build:
pod 390: header 51, hit −22…+20, "Launch plan" in full.
ws 390: header 51, hit −22…+20, "My Workspace" in full at 101px, hint on the title line.
No new horizontal overflow at either width. The one code-block overflow on pod-390 is also on live.
1440 is unchanged: the compact line is display:none and the desktop meta is untouched.
What passes on item 3: the line reads board N open · N members / 1 member; the link is cobalt mono 500 11px, navigates to the board, and the row stays at 28.
Re-gate: same arms at the next head. Pin the 44 inset and the h1 max-width in v2-layout-invariants.

Count hosted submissions from the full form.
For ?mode=hosted, a user can select “Other ways” and submit the preselected hosted mode without calling chooseMode. That records an exposure but no click. Record the submission for this path without double-counting a prior mode selection. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Make the compact board control reach 44px vertically.
The button has a 16px line height and zero padding. inset: -8px -10px therefore creates a 32px-high pseudo-element. The parent row's min-height: 28px does not change the button's containing block. Set the compact button to min-height: 28px with centered content, or use 14px vertical insets. Update the layout invariant to check the sizing rule that produces the 44px target.

Do not render a previous pod's board count.
When the pod changes, useV2PodHeaderMeta starts the new request but retains the old boardOpen value until that request resolves. This branch can then show the old count while the button navigates to the new pod. Scope the count by pod ID and return null until it belongs to the current pod. Add a delayed pod-switch regression test.

UX-GATE: PASS @ 3a041fd — items 1, 3 and 4 pass at 1440 and 390
This replaces my FAIL at 705332f. I built and measured bf0e02f too but didn't stamp it, because the head moved first. At bf0e02f the name still cut off ("My Workspa…": the h1 was 99.4px and the name needs 101). The gap: 4px on the compact meta in 3a041fd fixes that.
Method: a vite build of 3a041fd with REACT_APP_API_URL=https://api.commonly.me. The harness answers every API call from the fixture, so nothing goes to prod. I ran byo, pod, ws and onboard at 1440 and 390. The only fixture miss is next-free-name, and there are no page errors.
Item 1 (pick, then run)
The hint is 13px rgb(102,112,133) with no border.
After a pick, "Run it here" fills ink at 108.8×40.
The picked card has a 2px cobalt ring and aria-pressed=true, at both widths.
Item 3 (phone header, 390)
pod: the header is 51px, which hits the target. The h1 is 96.8px, so "Launch plan" shows in full, and the "i" hint stays on the title line (y 11). The board hit area runs −22 to +20, so it's 44px tall.
ws: the header is 51px. The h1 is 103.4px, so "My Workspace" shows in full. The hint is at y 11, the compact meta is 146.6px, and the hit area is 44px.
1440: the header is 51px and the compact line is display:none.
Item 4 (one ink act)
Default fixture: the action is stripped, as it is anywhere except the viewer's own Scout welcome (gateWelcomeHostedActions). All three starts are bordered, which is correct.
Positive arm: a fixture with action: 'run-hosted' present.
"Run an agent here, nothing to install" is ink rgb(16,24,40) with white text at weight 600, 243×32 at 1440 and 243×44 at 390.
"Connect an agent I already use" and "Start a pod for a project" are white with ink text at weight 500, 32/44.
First-run: "Open connection setup" is bordered (white, ink text, 170×35), and "Skip for now" is bare muted text. Each screen has exactly one ink act, at both widths.
Non-blocking
The setup link is 35px tall, which predates this PR.
The starts are 243px wide.
I didn't measure zh.
Merge order: #3001 lands first. The press is lily-shen's. If the head moves, I'll re-gate the same arms.

Reserve hint space only when the hint exists.
At phone widths, this rule applies to every pod title. V2Thread.tsx renders .v2-hint only when pod.description exists. Without a description, the title still loses 36px and truncates early. Scope this rule to title lines containing .v2-hint, or add an explicit modifier. Cover both states in the layout test.

Reply to the CodeRabbit thread on V2AgentBYOHostedOffer.test.tsx (discussion comment 4426652495): fixed in 1ba043c4.
The test that rendered only the compact hosted form is renamed to "the compact hosted form counts its submit as a click".
A new test renders the compact BYO form from ?from=card&name=…, waits for the hosting answer, asserts no hosted-offer-* event, then clicks "Other ways" and asserts the exposure is recorded there.
Mutant check: removing !showCompactByo from hostedOfferOnScreen fails the new test (1 failed, 21 passed). With the guard restored, all 57 tests across the three BYO suites pass.
Thread not resolved from this seat: the seat gh fence refuses the GraphQL and gh api POSTs needed to reply in the thread and resolve it. Needs resolving by an operator.
The delta from 3a041fd is V2AgentBYOHostedOffer.test.tsx only (+13/−1). No file under frontend/src outside __tests__ moved.
Measured at this head:
REACT_APP_API_URL=https://api.commonly.me npx vite build emits 169 files, and every one is sha256-identical to my 3a041fd build.
Audit arms byo, pod, ws and onboard × 1440/390 re-ran against that build. BYO default and picked are byte-identical PNGs at both widths, and so are the pod and My Workspace header crops. The full-page results match the 3a041fd run except the fixture's relative message clock.
Item 4 positive arm (start carries action: 'run-hosted'): v2-chat__start--primary is ink rgb(16,24,40) and 44 tall at 390, the two other starts are bordered white, and the results match the earlier run except the clock.
Not covered here: GitHub reports #3003 as CONFLICTING (DIRTY) against main right now, so the press needs a rebase. If that rebase leaves frontend/src outside tests at the same patch-id, it is base-only and this verdict carries. If any source file moves, re-gate.
…d link (TASK-647)
- BYO: the dashed "Choose where it runs first" slot becomes a muted hint
line with no border, so it no longer reads as a dead button.
- Pod header at phone width: the compact line carries the board N open link
(44px tap area via pseudo-element) and "N members", as the desktop meta does.
compactMeta locale keys are removed; nothing else reads them.

UX gate on 705332f: the board link's tap area was 32px, and the "i" hint
wrapped under the name, growing My Workspace from 51px to 79px at 390.
- The name takes the free width with a zero basis and truncates, so the hint
stays on its line. The title-line wrap rule is unchanged.
- The compact meta does not shrink or wrap.
- The board link's hit area is 44px tall (16px line + 14px each side).

Item 3, phone header at 760 and under (UX gate on bf0e02f):
- the board link's 44px hit area moves into the phone media block
(inset -14px -10px), and the name gets max-width calc(100% - 36px);
- the compact meta gap is 4px.
The compact line shows the member count only, so the agent count stays in
the desktop meta.
Item 4, My Workspace:
- the run-hosted start (keyed on WELCOME_HOSTED_ACTION, not position) is
the filled ink primary with an ink hover;
- the first-run "Open connection setup" link is bordered, so the card keeps
one ink action.
Tests: the layout invariants pin the new rules, and the thread starter test
checks the compact member count instead of the removed aria group.

The test named 'the compact BYO form counts no offer' rendered only the compact

This is a full re-gate, not a carried stamp. The base moved from 2c53798 to 51101b9, and #2999 (Night Shift) is in the new base, so the thread now paints walnut and parchment in Recursive.
Patch-ids. Ten of the 12 files have the same per-file patch-id as 1ba043c. V2AgentBYO.tsx and V2AgentBYOHostedOffer.test.tsx moved only because the old diff also carried #3001's telemetry lines, which main now has as 21a5784. The TASK-647 +/- lines are identical.
Build.vite build at feb75ba, then the byo, pod, ws and onboard arms at 1440 and 390, plus the t646b positive control.
BYO unchosen hint. All four PNGs (1440, 390, unpicked and picked) are byte-identical to the 1ba043c run. The hint is 13px muted text with no border.
Pod header at 390. The compact meta reads board 2 open · 3 members at x 197–342. The title ends at 189, so nothing overlaps. The "i" hint keeps its place and "My Worksp…" truncates. The header is 51 tall at both widths, the same as before.
Primary start. The rule is token-only (--v2-ink / --v2-on-ink / --v2-ink-hover), and Night Shift remaps all three. The primary start is parchment rgb(240,231,214) with walnut text, 600 weight, 32 tall at 1440 and 44 at 390. The other two starts are walnut with a seam border. It is still the screen's one filled act. The arm without the hosted start shows no primary, which is correct.
First-run setup link. Still bordered, not ink.
Meta and board colours. These come from Night Shift's own tokens on main (parch-3 meta, parchment board link). They aren't this PR's call.

Reset board count and channels when podId changes.
When podId changes from one truthy value to another, the effect starts a new board read but does not clear boardOpen or channels. The previous pod's values stay until a read for the new pod settles. The compact board button builds its URL from the new pod._id, so it can show the new pod's link with the old pod's "N open" text. Channel chips can show the old pod's channels in the same window.
Clear both values before loading the new pod's data:
Suggested fix
let active = true;
+ setBoardOpen(null);+ setChannels([]);
loadBoardOpen(podId);
The existing cleanup already increments boardReadRef and sets active = false, so a late response for the previous pod cannot overwrite the reset. The !podId branch is unchanged.
