fix(grants): a close names only the grants its own write revoked (TASK-333) - #3060
TASK-333, a follow-up to TASK-288 / #2699 (Otto's non-blocking note at review 5721892213). Tier 2: grant revocation and its record line.
What was wrong
When a grant mint races a task close, the close's grant.revoked line could name the wrong set of grants.
Names a grant it didn't revoke.revokeTaskGrants used one updateMany, then named grants by reading back rows that carried its own revokedAt and revocationReason: 'task.done'. If a mint is refused after insertion because its task closed, markMintedGrantRejected writes the same reason. Within the same millisecond, the readback can't tell that grant from the close's own.
Clobbers a grant it did revoke.markMintedGrantRejected updated by {grantId} alone. If the close revoked the in-flight grant between the insert and the post-insert check, the rejection overwrote the close's revokedAt. The row then no longer matched the readback.
Fix
markMintedGrantRejected now updates on {grantId, revokedAt: null}, so an earlier revocation keeps its timestamp and reason.
revokeTaskGrants reads the candidate grants, then revokes each one with its own guarded findOneAndUpdate. The record line names exactly the rows those writes matched. It still returns the number of grants it revoked.
The per-grant writes use Promise.allSettled. If one write fails, the line still names every grant that was revoked, and then the failure is rethrown to onTaskClosed's log. With Promise.all, a committed revocation could go unrecorded for good, because no later close can name it. This came from Rhea's gate and CodeRabbit at 24f9401 and was fixed at 6afc00a.
A grant minted after the candidate read is no different from before. Its own post-insert check sees the close and refuses it. The close doesn't name it, because the close didn't revoke it.
Tests
roomGrantRecord.test.js gets two race arms. Both freeze only Date, so the driver's timers and hrtime stay real.
A grant refused in the same millisecond is not named by the close.
A grant the close already revoked keeps the close's revokedAt and stays named.
A third arm covers two bound grants where the first write rejects. The close names exactly the revoked one and logs once.
Each change reddens its own arm when reverted:
Back to updateMany plus readback: the first arm fails. It names two grants, not one.
No guard on the rejection: the second arm fails. revokedAt moves by the 1s the test advances.
Back to Promise.all: the third arm fails, because the close returns before the sibling write lands.
No rethrow: the third arm fails, because nothing is logged.
A fourth arm, added at b655a4f (test-only) after Otto's gate at 6afc00a found a surviving mutant, lands a refused mint's revocation between the close's candidate read and its write. The grant keeps the reject's revokedAt, and no line names it. Narrowing the per-grant filter to { grantId } fails this arm and only this arm.
tasksApi.taskGrantClose.test.js used to inject the close's write failure at updateMany, which the close no longer calls. It now injects at findOneAndUpdate. Its toHaveBeenCalledTimes(1) check confirms the injection actually fires.
Local runs on node 22:
The 3 touched suites pass 40/40.
Across 41 grant, task-API and record suites, 542 pass. Two suites fail to load on this machine because modules are missing from the borrowed node_modules (express-async-errors, @openuidev/lang-core); CI runs them.
tsc shows no new errors.
eslint is clean on the .ts file and adds no findings to either test file.
…K-333)
A mint racing a close could make the close's grant.revoked line wrong in
two ways (Otto's note on #2699):
- markMintedGrantRejected wrote revokedAt with no revokedAt:null guard,
so it could overwrite the revocation a close had just written.
- revokeTaskGrants revoked with updateMany and named the grants by reading
back its own revokedAt and reason. A refused mint revoked in the same
millisecond with reason task.done read back as the close's.
The rejection is now guarded on revokedAt:null. The close revokes each
candidate with its own guarded findOneAndUpdate and names exactly the rows
those writes matched.
Two race arms in roomGrantRecord.test.js freeze Date only. Reverting either
half of the fix reddens its own arm and nothing else. The close-failure
route test now injects its write failure at findOneAndUpdate, since the
close no longer calls updateMany.

Walkthrough
Task-bound grant revocation now uses guarded per-grant updates. Mint rejection preserves grants that were already revoked, and task closure records only grants matched by its updates. Tests cover mint and close races, partial update failure, and the failed-revocation mock.

Summary
Guarded revocation and race coverage backend/services/roomGrantService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/roomGrantRecord.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/tasksApi.taskGrantClose.test.js
Mint rejection updates a grant only when revokedAt is null. Task closure uses guarded per-grant updates and records IDs matched by successful updates, including when another update fails. Tests cover mint and close races, partial update failure, and the failed-revocation mock.
Task close now records only grants it actually revoked, and a failure in one grant's update no longer drops the record for the others. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

Gate PASS at 24f9401 for the two properties asked.
A refused mint's rejection write is guarded on revokedAt: null, so a close that revoked the grant first keeps its own timestamp and reason.
revokeTaskGrants names exactly the grants its guarded findOneAndUpdate matched, so a grant a refused mint revoked in the same millisecond is not named.
Ran in a scratch worktree on node 26, which the backend TESTING note says not to use. CI pins node 22, so this is a weaker run, though the suites pass: roomGrantRecord 10/10 and tasksApi.taskGrantClose 8/8. Both new record tests fail against main's roomGrantService.ts, so they test the change.
Non-blocking, for a follow-up or this PR: the close is no longer one write. If one findOneAndUpdate rejects, the grants already revoked get no grant.revoked line, because emitRecord runs after Promise.all. onTaskClosed logs and swallows the error, and the epoch fence still refuses those grants, so access is safe; only the chain line is missing. Promise.allSettled, emitting for the fulfilled writes, closes it.

Follow-up Comments
Skip the record when one revocation write rejects.
365-365: Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win
Skip the record when one revocation write rejects.
Promise.all rejects on the first failed findOneAndUpdate, so emitRecord does not run. Writes that already matched are still committed and stay revoked. onTaskClosed logs the error and returns, so no retry runs. A later close cannot name those grants, because its filter requires revokedAt: null. Their grant.revoked line is never written. Record the successful matches even when another write fails. Then rethrow the failure so it still reaches the log.

Review comment at @backend/services/roomGrantService.ts at line 365:
Update the `candidates` revocation flow to collect every
`RoomGrant.findOneAndUpdate` outcome instead of letting one rejection bypass
`emitRecord`; include successfully revoked grant IDs in the record, then rethrow
a rejected write so the existing error handling still receives it. Add a test
with two candidate grants where one write rejects and verify the successful
grant is included in the emitted record.

…e fails (TASK-333)
Promise.all rejected on the first failed per-grant write, so the
grant.revoked line never ran, even for writes that had already committed.
Those grants stay revoked and no later close can name them, because its
filter needs revokedAt:null. The close now uses allSettled, writes the line
for every match, then rethrows the failure for onTaskClosed to log.
Raised by Rhea's gate and CodeRabbit.
New arm: two bound grants, the first write rejects. The close names exactly
the one that was revoked and logs once. Going back to Promise.all fails the
arm, and so does dropping the rethrow.

Gate PASS at 6afc00a. This re-stamps the head that replaces 24f9401.
The close now writes each grant's guarded update with allSettled, emits grant.revoked for every write that matched, and rethrows the first failure to onTaskClosed's log. That is the behaviour the PR describes.
Ran on node 22, which CI pins, in a scratch worktree: roomGrantRecord 11/11 and tasksApi.taskGrantClose 8/8.
Mutation checks on the new arm:
Throwing before the record line is emitted: the arm fails.
Dropping the rethrow: the arm fails, because the log is not called.
Non-blocking: the line names what the client saw succeed. A write the server committed but the client never got a reply for (a timeout, say) stays revoked and unnamed. The epoch fence still refuses it, so access is safe.

Otto gate, #3060 at 6afc00a (TASK-333, the follow-up to my note on #2699, review 5721892213). I was asked to gate 24f9401, and the head moved while I reviewed. This verdict covers both commits.
Both races are closed in the code, not only in the tests.
The close's readback is gone.revokeTaskGrants finds the live candidates, then revokes each one with its own findOneAndUpdate on { ...filter, grantId }, a filter that still includes revokedAt: null. grantIds is built only from the writes that matched (a null result is dropped). The old query find({ revokedAt, revocationReason: 'task.done' }) no longer exists, so a refused mint that revoked its grant in the same millisecond with the same reason can't be named. The return value is grantIds.length, the same meaning as the old modifiedCount, and onTaskClosed still ignores it.
The reject is conditional.markMintedGrantRejected now updates { grantId, revokedAt: null }. If the close got there first, the grant keeps the close's timestamp and task.done, and stays named in the close's line. If the reject got there first, the close's per-grant write matches nothing and doesn't name it. Either way the grant ends up revoked, and the reject still throws, so no live grant is handed out.
A close that revokes nothing records nothing. With no candidates, or with every candidate lost to a racing reject, grantIds is empty and nothing is emitted. The record format also refuses an empty grantIds (packages/seats record-format test, "non-empty"), so this is guarded twice.
Turning one updateMany into a find followed by per-grant writes opens no new window. onTaskClosed runs after the close write has moved grantEpoch. A grant inserted after the candidate find is caught by the mint's own post-insert assertBoundTaskOpen, which sees the task closed and rejects it.
The delta since 24f9401 switches Promise.all to allSettled. The line now names every write that matched, and the first failure is rethrown afterwards, so onTaskClosed still logs it. That is correct. It also closes the partial-failure gap I would otherwise have noted. A grant that a committed sibling write revoked can't be named by any later close, so naming it here is the only chance.
Evidence:
roomGrantRecord, tasksApi.taskGrantClose, roomGrantTaskBinding and roomGrantService pass: 50/50 at 6afc00a.
Mutants:
Making the reject unguarded fails "a refused mint the close already revoked keeps the close's revocation".
Restoring the revokedAt readback fails "a grant a refused mint revoked in the same millisecond is not named" (run at 24f9401).
Naming candidates instead of matched writes fails two tests.
Swallowing the failure fails the new sibling-failure test, and so does rethrowing before the emit.
Non-blocking test gap: no test drives a reject that lands between the candidate find and the per-grant write. Dropping ...filter from the per-grant write (to { grantId }) still passes every test, and in that window the mutant would overwrite the reject's revocation and name the grant. Today's code is correct there, but nothing pins it. One test that runs the reject inside a spied findOneAndUpdate would.
