What

  • npm run dev:live runs the Vite dev server on localhost:3000 and proxies /api and /socket.io to a real backend.
  • Default target is staging (api-staging.commonly.me), where writes are safe.
  • DEV_LIVE_TARGET=prod points at prod, read-only: HTTP writes are refused at the proxy, and the socket is not proxied.
  • The proxy drops the browser Origin header, because prod refuses http://localhost:3000. Prod CORS is unchanged.
  • Plain npm start is unchanged and has no proxy.

Verified

  • Proxied /api/health returns the backend JSON. An Origin-bearing request reaches the backend without the Origin (staging 403s a localhost Origin when called direct).
  • The branch renders at localhost. Headless check: the page loads from the branch and reaches the app shell.

Not yet

Test plan

  • npm run dev:live on a clean checkout loads a pod from staging after sign-in.
  • DEV_LIVE_TARGET=prod npm run dev:live: a GET-only page renders; a POST returns the proxy 404.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…kend (TASK-686)

Vite dev server proxies /api and /socket.io to staging by default, or to prod
with DEV_LIVE_TARGET=prod. Prod is read-only for the browser: HTTP writes are
refused at the proxy and the socket is not proxied. The proxy drops the
browser Origin header, since prod refuses http://localhost:3000. Prod CORS is
unchanged. Plain npm start has no proxy.

Verified: proxied /api/health returns the backend JSON with no Origin, and
an Origin-bearing request reaches the backend without it (staging 403s a
localhost Origin when called direct). The branch renders at localhost.

Walkthrough

The frontend adds a dev:live command and an opt-in Vite proxy for staging or production. Production mode blocks API requests other than GET and HEAD and does not proxy /socket.io. Tests cover production restrictions and invalid targets. Guides document setup and production sign-in.

Changes: Live backend proxy

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and use the live proxy
frontend/package.json, frontend/vite.config.ts, frontend/scripts/dev-live-proxy.test.mjs, frontend/TESTING.md, docs/development/ui-validation.md
The dev:live script enables the proxy. Vite selects staging by default or production when configured, and rejects an invalid target. Production mode blocks API writes and omits the socket proxy. Tests cover these behaviors. The guides describe setup, staging authentication, and production sign-in.

Clarify that GET requests can change production data.

The proxy blocks write methods, but it does not make the backend read-only. For example, loading messages from a user-created pod can set onboarding.podOpenedAt through backend/controllers/messageController.ts and backend/services/onboardingMarks.ts. Describe this as a method restriction and warn about GET side effects, or prevent those effects. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Added frontend/scripts/dev-live-proxy.test.mjs (commit fad5d48) for the CodeRabbit thread on vite.config.ts:40. It runs the real vite.config.ts in prod read-only mode and checks, offline:

  • POST, PUT, PATCH and DELETE to /api/* return a Vite 404 from the local server, so nothing leaves for api.commonly.me. The 404 is what TESTING.md documents.
  • /socket.io answers with Vite's HTML fallback, not an engine.io handshake (no "sid").
  • An unknown DEV_LIVE_TARGET fails the config load.

Added to the npm test node list. node --test scripts/dev-live-proxy.test.mjs is 3/3 locally.

Minor follow-up Verify that each write stays local.

45-46: Minor · Security & Privacy · Quick win

Verify that each write stays local.

A forwarded request can also receive a non-JSON 404, so these assertions do not prove that the proxy refused it. Route the test to a local backend fixture and assert that it receives no write requests. Include a positive control that reaches the fixture.

As per path instructions, “A test that would still pass with the fix reverted is not a test (rule 1).”

Update the test around the status and content-type assertions to verify write
requests stay local: route requests through a local backend fixture and assert
it receives no write requests. Add a positive control that reaches the fixture,
so the test distinguishes proxy refusal from a forwarded request returning a
non-JSON 404.

Avoid a fixed port for the test server.

If another process or test run uses port 3199, strictPort makes npm test fail. Let Vite select an available port and use the actual listening address for requests. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

51-58: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Test successful proxy traffic.

If the proxy is disabled entirely, Vite can still return 404 for the write requests and HTML for this polling request. The current tests can therefore pass while dev:live cannot reach either backend. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add fixture-backed tests for forwarded API requests, staging socket traffic, and removal of Origin.

As per coding guidelines, “New code path ≠ test: flag it.”

Extend the tests using withDevLive to verify fixture-backed API requests are
forwarded, staging socket traffic reaches its backend, and proxied requests have
their Origin header removed; retain the existing prod read-only socket test.

Do not reference an unavailable seed command.

At revision d3dccd37581d583c0177a5d088ea7002a60fc924, the TASK-697 seed script and docs/development/ui-validation.md are absent, and backend/package.json does not define seed:staging. A clean checkout cannot perform the setup described here. Land this documentation with the seed change, or document a command and path available in this revision. ()

As per path instructions, this is a correctness issue in the documented workflow, not a style comment.

Review of the dev:live branch at 3669368 (flint's one review round).

  • Diff: 5 files. The proxy, the refusal and socket checks, the unknown-target guard, the package script and the docs were read against the TASK-686 notes.
  • node --test scripts/dev-live-proxy.test.mjs: 3/3 pass on this head.
  • No blocking defects. The token-isolation point is answered by the doc note, not by code, since the proxy cannot isolate browser storage.

Staging and prod now serve on separate origins (3102 / 3101), so a prod
token saved on one cannot reach a staging run. The config sets the API
base to the same origin. Proxy tests run the real config against a stub
upstream (DEV_LIVE_UPSTREAM) and assert refused prod writes never reach
it, GET reads and staging writes are proxied with Origin dropped, the
socket path is not proxied in prod, and each target binds its own port.

Re-review of the dev:live branch at this head (flint's one review round, after the two CodeRabbit threads).

  • Token isolation: staging and prod now bind separate ports (3102 and 3101), so their origins and localStorage differ. The test asserts the port follows the target.
  • Proxy tests: 6/6 pass on this head, run against the real config with a stub upstream (DEV_LIVE_UPSTREAM). They cover refused prod writes with no upstream call, prod GET proxying, the prod socket refusal, staging writes with Origin dropped, the per-target port, and the unknown-target guard.
  • No blocking defects found in the diff.
