chore(staging): allowlist example.invalid so the first-user walk runs E2E (TASK-706) - #3125
One line in values-staging.yaml: append example.invalid to backend.env.authAllowedDomains (now seed.staging.commonly.me,ops.commonly.invalid,example.invalid).
Why
The daily first-user walk (scripts/first-user-walk.mjs, #3107 / TASK-706) signs up as walk-<stamp>@example.invalid. Rivet ran it against api-staging and it stopped at signup with 403 INSTANCE_ACCESS_RESTRICTED — staging's access gate (instanceAccessPolicy.ts, exact-domain match on AUTH_ALLOWED_DOMAINS) working as designed. For the walk to validate the real first-user journey E2E on staging, its domain must be on the staging allowlist.
Why this is safe
example.invalid is an RFC-6761 reserved TLD: non-registrable and non-deliverable. Allowlisting it opens staging signup only to obvious throwaway test addresses, not any real mailbox. It sits beside the existing reserved ops.commonly.invalid — same established convention.
Staging only. Prod (values-dev.yaml) sets no authAllowedDomains, so prod is already public and is untouched by this change.
The walk deletes its accounts by id from its manifest after each run (first-user-walk-cleanup.mjs); prod remains held until two clean staging passes (walk discipline, not an access gate).
… E2E (TASK-706)
The daily first-user walk (scripts/first-user-walk.mjs, #3107) signs up as
walk-<stamp>@example.invalid. Staging gates signup via AUTH_ALLOWED_DOMAINS, so
the walk stopped at signup with a 403 INSTANCE_ACCESS_RESTRICTED. example.invalid
is an RFC-6761 reserved, non-registrable, non-deliverable domain, added beside the
existing reserved ops.commonly.invalid — it opens staging signup only to the
walk's throwaway test addresses. Prod (values-dev) sets no authAllowedDomains and
stays public/unchanged. The walk deletes its accounts by id after each run.

Walkthrough
The staging authentication domain allowlist now includes example.invalid. The existing seed and CI smoke domains remain.
Holding this — it's safe but insufficient on its own, so I'm not pressing it.
Staging has email delivery configured (SMTP2GO + FRONTEND_URL), so register doesn't 503; it proceeds and sends a verification email to walk-<stamp>@example.invalid. That domain is RFC-6761 reserved and non-deliverable, so the account never becomes verified. The verify-gate in middleware/auth.ts (isAccountInstanceRestricted(email, verified)) then refuses the account on every authenticated request. The allowlist clears only the register-time domain check, not verification — so the walk would sign up and then be blocked at its first authenticated step.
(This same verify-gate is what protects the existing reserved ops.commonly.invalid: a reserved allowlisted domain can't be used by open signup, because verification is still required. So adding example.invalid is not an open door — it's just not a key either.)
Recommended shape instead: the walk signs in on staging as a pre-created, verified walk account under a domain that's already allowlisted, rather than signing up a fresh unverifiable address. That needs no change to this file, so this PR can be closed once that lands. Leaving it open and held pending that decision.
Add regression coverage for the staging allowlist contract.
This configuration change flows through the Helm deployment into AUTH_ALLOWED_DOMAINS, which controls isInstanceEmailAllowed. The existing unit test sets that environment variable manually, and the first-user walk is not a regression test for the rendered staging configuration.
Add a test that renders the staging configuration, passes its resulting AUTH_ALLOWED_DOMAINS to isInstanceEmailAllowed, accepts the walk address, preserves the seed and ops domains, and rejects an unlisted domain. The test must fail when example.invalid is removed.

The allowlist entry does not let the first-user walk complete on staging.
Staging sets AUTH_ALLOWED_DOMAINS (values-staging.yaml:186), so the instance gate is on. Staging also has no SMTP2GO key (values-staging.yaml email block, email.enabled: false). For walk-<stamp>@example.invalid, POST /api/auth/register passes the domain check at authController.ts:421. It then returns 503 INSTANCE_VERIFICATION_UNAVAILABLE at lines 426–430, before any user is created. The walk's signup step expects 201, so it stops there. The failure moves from the domain check to the delivery check.
Adding a deliverable domain would not fix this. Signup still needs email delivery while the gate is on. Even with SMTP configured, sendEmail skips reserved-domain recipients (emailService.ts:31–40). The account would stay unverified, and login would refuse it with INSTANCE_ACCESS_RESTRICTED (authController.ts:867). A correct fix needs a design decision: how the walk obtains a usable staging session. The diff alone does not establish that. No patch is proposed.

Closing — not merging. See the finding above (#3125 (comment)): the allowlist alone can't satisfy the TASK-715 verify-gate, because a reserved non-deliverable address can never become verified. Resolved instead by pre-creating a verified walk account under a domain that's already allowlisted and having the walk sign in on staging — so no change to values-staging.yaml is needed.
