No description provided.

Staging signup needs a verified email the walk cannot receive, so the walk
signs in to SRE's pre-verified staging walk account when COMMONLY_WALK_EMAIL
is set. Credentials come from env only.

- chooseWalkMode: signin only on a staging host; COMMONLY_WALK_EMAIL aimed at
any other host is refused before the walk starts.
- Signin runs skip the signup and signup-workspace steps, so no pod that the
shared account already owns is recorded for cleanup.
- cleanupRun deleteAccount:false removes only the recorded pods and never
calls DELETE /api/users/me or the post-delete login check.
- Tests: 22 pass (cleanup, including sign-in account kept and only recorded
pods removed; mode selection, including refusal on prod).

Walkthrough

The first-user walk supports signup or sign-in with a configured shared account on the exact HTTPS staging host. It records the selected mode and can recover created pods for cleanup. Sign-in cleanup preserves the shared account and processes recorded resources.

Changes: Staging Shared-Account Walk

Select and run walk mode
scripts/first-user-walk-mode.mjs, scripts/first-user-walk-mode.test.mjs, scripts/first-user-walk.mjs, docs/runbooks/first-user-walk.md
The walk selects sign-in only when a shared email is configured for the exact HTTPS staging host. Sign-in skips signup steps and records the selected mode. The runbook describes staging setup.
Track and clean run-owned resources
scripts/first-user-walk.mjs, scripts/first-user-walk-cleanup.mjs, scripts/first-user-walk-cleanup.test.mjs
The walk attempts to recover a pod by matching its name and owner after creation fails or returns no pod ID. Shared-account cleanup removes and verifies recorded pods, skips account-wide pod discovery and account deletion, and excludes the account’s Scout bot. Tests cover mode handoff, pod recovery, and cleanup outcomes.

- Staging check is an exact https host allowlist. The old substring match
would have sent the shared password to any host containing "staging".
- A kept account's Scout bot is its own, not this run's, so it is never
  recorded for the admin purge.
- A pod create that lands without an id is recorded by its unique name
before the step fails, so cleanup still removes it.
- Login failures report status and error code only, not the body.

Self-review of 572667d is done (subagent pass, no edits). Fixed at 8d5d7fa:

  1. Blocking: host substring match. /staging/ matched any host containing the word, so the shared password could go to a look-alike host. Now an exact https allowlist (api-staging.commonly.me). Tests cover look-alike hosts and plain http.
  2. Blocking: Scout bot recorded in sign-in mode. The kept account's own scout-u… bot would have been written to the manifest for purge. A kept account's Scout is now never recorded. Test added.
  3. Orphaned pod on a create without an id. The pod is now recorded by its unique name before the step fails.
  4. Login error echo. Login failures report status and error code only.

Tests: 26/26 pass. Not covered by a test: main() is not exported, so the pass-through of deleteAccount from main to cleanup is checked by reading only. Orphan-pod recovery is also untested. CodeRabbit runs next at this head.

Make the staging command executable.

The unquoted <shared walk account> and <its password> placeholders are shell redirection syntax. Copying this command does not start the walk. Show the command using previously exported environment variables, or use quoted example values that cannot be mistaken for a runnable secret.

As per path instructions, check each documented tool claim against its behavior.

- Requests refuse redirects (redirect: 'error'), so the shared password is
  never replayed to another origin.
- Ambiguous pod creates (an error, or a reply without an id) are recovered by
unique name; if the list cannot be read, the name is reported as an
unresolved survivor and the run is needs-admin-purge.
- deleteAccount is decided once in chooseWalkMode and handed to cleanup; tests
run the staging handoff and assert the account is never deleted.

CodeRabbit on 8d5d7fa (3 major). Fixed at 1f5fd80:

  1. Mode-to-cleanup handoff test (first-user-walk.mjs:140). Fixed. chooseWalkMode now returns deleteAccount, and main hands exactly that value to cleanup. Tests run the staging handoff and assert DELETE /api/users/me is never called, and that a signup run still deletes. This tests the handoff through the same field, not main() itself, which is not exported.
  2. Redirect carries the shared password (first-user-walk.mjs:165). Fixed. Every request uses redirect: 'error'. Checked locally: a 307 to another origin is refused.
  3. Ambiguous pod create (first-user-walk.mjs:221). Fixed. An error or a reply without an id runs recoverRunPods, matching by the unique run name. If the list can't be read, the name goes into the manifest as an unresolved survivor, and the run is needs-admin-purge. Tests cover the owner match and the failed-list case.

Tests: 30/30 pass. CodeRabbit re-runs on the new head.

- Pod create recovery runs on any reply that does not carry a created pod,
including 4xx and 5xx, since a failed-looking reply may still have committed.
- recoverRunPods returns false when a 200 body is not a pod list, so an
unreadable list is reported as unresolved rather than as "no pod".
- The cleanup error path keeps the unresolved pod names in the survivors.

Tests: 31 pass. main() is still not exported, so the wiring is checked by
reading, not by test.

Review of the delta 8d5d7fa..1f5fd80, round two, found four issues. Fixed at 2eca900:

  1. Blocking: a 4xx or 5xx that committed a pod was not recovered. Recovery now runs on any reply without a created pod, so the outcome is checked by name.
  2. A 200 whose body is not a pod list counted as "no pod". recoverRunPods now returns false for it, so the name is reported as unresolved.
  3. The cleanup error path dropped the unresolved names. They are kept in the survivors.
  4. Not fixed: main() is not exported, so the wiring from deleteAccount into cleanup, and from recovery into the manifest, is checked by reading, not by test. The fix would mean exporting or extracting main, which I'd rather make as its own change.

Also noted, not changed: cleanupRun's deleteAccount defaults to true. main() always passes it, and the tests pass it explicitly where it matters.

Tests: 31/31 pass.

Second review of the delta 8d5d7fa..2eca900 (round two, plus a check on the full feature).

Findings and status:

  1. Blocking, fixed: a 4xx or 5xx reply that had already created the pod was not recovered. Recovery now runs on any reply without a created pod. Checked.
  2. Fixed: a 200 whose body is not a pod list counted as "no pod". recoverRunPods returns false for it. Test added.
  3. Fixed: the cleanup error path dropped the unresolved pod names. They are kept.
  4. Not fixed, named as a gap: main() is not exported, so the wiring from chooseWalkMode through deleteAccount into cleanup, and from recovery into the manifest, is checked by reading, not by test. A revert of that wiring would still pass all 31 tests. Making it testable is its own change.

Also checked and fine: ownerOf matching in recovery (another account's same-name pod is excluded and tested); redirect: 'error' is the only fetch path; the no-session and session paths both include the unresolved names; the status logic; and sign-in mode yields deleteAccount false.

Tests: node --test scripts/first-user-walk-cleanup.test.mjs scripts/first-user-walk-mode.test.mjs, 31 pass, 0 fail.

Not verified: a live staging run (SRE, after press). Bring-your-own stays NOT COVERED (exit 2).

GATE: PASS

A valid pod list with no match for this run returned true, so cleanup
could mark the run clean and leave a walk pod behind. Return true only
when a matching owned pod is found. Adds the no-match test.

Outside diff Exercise the production cleanup handoff.

240-252: Major · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift

Exercise the production cleanup handoff.

The handoff tests call chooseWalkMode and run directly. They do not execute scripts/first-user-walk.mjs, where production passes deleteAccount into cleanupRun. If that argument is omitted or bypassed, cleanupRun defaults it to true, so staging cleanup may delete the shared account while both tests still pass.

Add a seam around the production handoff, or invoke an exported production entry point, and assert that staging sign-in passes deleteAccount: false while signup passes true.
