feat(v2): chat and the sidebar draw their keys and segment from the D223 primitives (TASK-734, TASK-735) - #3154
Chat and the sidebar now take their keys and segment from wisp's D223 primitives (#3144), as Launch asked for TASK-734 and TASK-735.
What changed
primitives.css now loads globally, right after v2.css. Before this it loaded only on the /v2/_primitives showcase.
Chat keys:
plus: ghost, 32px icon key
Send: primary, 32px icon key
back and panel toggle: ghost, 32px icon keys
Invite: secondary, small
the panel head's members, manage and Hide: ghost, 28px icon keys
Sidebar keys: new pod is a secondary 32px icon key, and search is a ghost 28px icon key.
V2Segmented renders v2p-seg. That covers the pod list's Recent · All · Pinned, the panel's Pod | Threads and Who can join, and Settings › Look.
Why the bespoke rules had to go
A .v2-root button.<class> rule outranks .v2p-b (0,2,1 against 0,1,0). So for each key, the look (size, border, fill, radius, colour, hover, focus) comes out of v2.css, and only these stay:
layout (flex)
the open-menu tint on plus and new pod
Send's disabled state and its mono glyph
the segment's hover, focus ring and disabled state
the phone rules: Invite turns into a ghost icon, back shows, Hide hides, and every phone key gets its 44px hit area
Checked in a browser (dev:live from this branch against staging, signed in as the seeded non-admin seat on the D215 sample pod):
At 1440 and 390, light and dark, the header, panel head, sidebar, composer and segments all draw as primitives.
Send with text measures 32×32 at r8, with the ink gradient in light and the light gradient in dark.
The phone hit areas still measure 44px on back, Invite, panel toggle and plus.
Tests
The layout invariants now pin each key's primitive classes in its component.
They pin that V2App imports primitives.css after v2.css.
They pin that v2.css no longer gives Send a background, which would outrank the primitive.
The segment keeps its focus-ring guard.
The v2 suite passes in a container (170 suites, 2016 tests), and tsc is clean for frontend/src.
…223 primitives
primitives.css now loads globally after v2.css. Chat's plus, Send, back, Invite
and panel toggle, the panel head's keys, and the sidebar's new-pod and search
keys carry v2p-b classes (ghost, primary, secondary; 32px icon, 28px small),
and V2Segmented renders v2p-seg. Their bespoke looks are gone from v2.css,
since a .v2-root button.<class> rule would outrank the primitive; what stays is
layout, open and disabled states, focus on the segment, and the phone hit areas.

V2 controls now use shared primitive classes and styles. The app imports the primitives stylesheet, component-specific appearance rules are reduced, and layout-invariant tests check the updated styling contracts.
Component-specific appearance rules are removed or reduced. The mobile Invite button retains a focus-visible ring, and the mobile hide selector targets its button class directly.
Team-Commonly/commonly#1400: The PR standardizes chat, panel-header, and sidebar controls with shared primitives, matching the issue’s objective of making task-panel controls more consistent.
Merge Risk: Low · up to f2b22
The uploading Plus feedback is only partially covered by tests, so a later regression could remove its cursor or color behavior without failing the suite.

The phone rule's box-shadow: none outranks .v2p-b:focus-visible, so keyboard
focus drew nothing. The ring is restated for that key.

Writer's review (subagent), with what I did about each finding:
Fixed: phone Invite had no focus ring. The phone ghost override sets box-shadow: none, which outranks .v2p-b:focus-visible, so keyboard focus drew nothing. The ring is now restated for that key, and a test pins it. In a browser at 390, Tab to Invite now reads 0 0 0 3px rgb(233,237,251), 0 0 0 1px rgb(29,63,209) once the 140ms transition settles.
Kept as is: no hover on the primary and secondary keys. Send, Invite and new pod used to darken on hover. The artboard's primitives give hover only to ghost keys (.b-g:hover), and feat(v2): D223 shared primitives and /v2/_primitives (TASK-730 PR2) #3144 lifted them as they are. That follows the artboard under the Cofounder's standing rule, and hover isn't a measured standard. The ghost keys in the panel head and search now hover to the surface tint, not surface-hover, same as the artboard.
Also fixed a stale comment on the Hide rule: it still named .v2-icon-button.
Confirmed with no change needed: the back key stays hidden on desktop. The segment keeps its focus ring and disabled state. V2Segmented is the only user of v2-seg. No .on rule collides with the segment's on.
Add a no-wrap assertion for the segment options in the layout test.
The segment no-wrap rule moved from v2.css to primitives.css, and the test no longer checks it. Removing white-space: nowrap from .v2p-seg button would leave the suite green. The rule is still in effect today, so this is a test gap, not a current layout failure.

Add an assertion in the segment layout invariants test that ruleBody(primitives,
'.v2p-seg button') contains the white-space: nowrap declaration, preserving
coverage of the segment options’ no-wrap rule in primitives.css.

Add disabled-state rules for the Plus key so it does not look enabled during upload.
While uploading is true, the Plus key is disabled, but the head styles can still show it as enabled. The primitive .v2p-b-g:hover applies a surface tint with no :disabled guard, and .v2p-b sets cursor: pointer. The base rule used :hover:not(:disabled), which excluded the disabled state. The head removed that guard and added no replacement for .v2-composer__plus. Send keeps its own :disabled cursor rule, but Plus has none.

.v2-root button.v2-composer__plus::before { content: '+'; font: 500 18px/1 var(--v2-font); }
/* Look from the D223 primitives (primitives.css): v2p-b v2p-b-g v2p-ib; the open menu keeps the hover tint. */
.v2-root button.v2-composer__plus[aria-expanded="true"] { background: var(--v2-surface-tint); color: var(--v2-text-primary); }

CodeRabbit (outside the diff, V2Composer plus): this one is real. The plus is disabled while a file uploads, and .v2p-b-g:hover has no :disabled guard, though the old bespoke hover had one. A disabled plus now gets a progress cursor and keeps its resting look on hover, and a layout test pins it. The v2 suite passes (171 suites, 2042 tests).
Extend this assertion to cover the full disabled-plus contract.
frontend/src/v2/v2.css adds cursor: progress and color: var(--v2-text-secondary) for :disabled:hover, but this test checks only the background. A regression in either declaration would still pass. Assert both declarations and verify by mutation that reverting either declaration makes the test fail.
As per path instructions, a test that still passes after reverting changed behavior is not a valid test.

Extend the disabled-plus hover assertion in the layout invariants test to check
the computed cursor and color alongside the existing background, using the
expected progress cursor and secondary text color. Ensure the assertion fails if
either corresponding :disabled:hover declaration is reverted.

Chat and the sidebar's keys and segment now draw from primitives.css, which loads globally after v2.css. No .v2-root button.<class> rule restates a look that would outrank a primitive.
Browser, dev:live from this branch against staging, at 1440 and 390, light and dark. The header, panel head, sidebar, composer and segments render as primitives. Send measures 32×32 at r8 with the ink gradient in light and the light gradient in dark. Phone hit areas are still 44px. Tab to the phone Invite draws the focus ring.
frame-diff, sidebar 390, same staging data: 0.520 on main, 0.521 here. The pod rows don't move (row 1 is 12,106 366x44 on both). Only the segment changes, 180.2 → 176.4px, because the artboard's 12.5px replaces the old 13px. Launch ruled to keep 12.5.
Writer's subagent review found the phone Invite focus ring missing. Fixed and tested.
CodeRabbit found the disabled plus taking the ghost hover. Fixed and tested.
Hover on primary and secondary keys is dropped on purpose, matching the artboard's primitives. Noted on the PR.
The v2 suite passes in a container (171 suites, 2042 tests), tsc is clean for frontend/src, and CI is green at this head.
