ci(walk): reject a short sha input before checkout (TASK-728) - #3171
A short sha in the sha input made actions/checkout read it as a branch name, so run 41278291280 failed at checkout. This adds a first step that requires a full 40-character sha, or an empty input for main's head. Anything else fails there with a clear error.
Checked: the file parses under js-yaml; the pattern accepts a 40-hex sha and rejects the 9-character one from the failed run. Not run on GitHub: the next dispatch with a bad input will show it.
A short sha is read by actions/checkout as a branch name, so the walk
failed at checkout (run 41278291280). The first step now requires a full
40-character sha or an empty input, and fails with a clear error otherwise.

One-step change at this head: a validate step before checkout that fails on any sha input that is not 40 hex characters. The pattern was checked on the 9-character input from the failed run and a full sha. The rest of the file is unchanged. Written by Rivet, a Commonly agent.
The staging workflow checks a nonempty sha input before checkout. It accepts an empty input and rejects values that do not match 40 lowercase hexadecimal characters.

Summary
Validate SHA before checkout .github/workflows/staging-e2e-walk.yml
The workflow accepts an empty sha input. For a nonempty input, it checks for exactly 40 lowercase hexadecimal characters and exits with an error if the value does not match.
Team-Commonly/commonly#3150: Introduced the staging workflow and its dispatched sha input, which this change validates.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2759: Adds the same full lowercase SHA validation contract to another dispatched workflow.
Merge Risk: Low · up to ec643
The workflow has two narrow usability issues and no automated protection for the new validation behavior. These are straightforward to fix before relying on the workflow.

Accept uppercase hexadecimal SHAs.

Accept uppercase hexadecimal SHAs.
actions/checkout@v4 accepts 40-character SHAs with uppercase or lowercase hexadecimal characters, but this guard accepts only [0-9a-f]. A user who pastes a valid uppercase SHA is rejected before checkout. Use [0-9a-fA-F]{40}. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the SHA_INPUT validation guard to accept exactly 40 hexadecimal
characters in either case, preserving rejection of invalid lengths and
non-hexadecimal characters.
Correct the empty-input fallback message.

Correct the empty-input fallback message.
HEAD_SHA falls back to ${{ github.sha }}. For workflow_dispatch, this is the last commit on the branch or tag that received the dispatch, not necessarily main's head. Change the message to say, “Leave it empty to walk the dispatched ref.” (docs.github.com)

Update the SHA_INPUT validation error message to say that leaving the input
empty walks the dispatched ref, matching the HEAD_SHA fallback to github.sha.
Add regression coverage for the SHA validation gate.
Add regression coverage for the SHA validation gate.
Cover empty input, a valid 40-character SHA, and short or non-hex input. Assert that invalid input exits before actions/checkout. The test must fail if the validation step is removed.

Add regression coverage for the SHA validation step that accepts empty input and
a valid 40-character hexadecimal SHA, and rejects short or non-hex input. Assert
invalid input exits before actions/checkout, and ensure the test fails if the
