fix(v2): a comment that quoted */ ended early and dropped light --v2-ink-2 - #3221
Found while proving the v2.css dead-selector delete (Sharpen TASK-758): postcss refused v2.css at line 179, and the reason is a real bug in production CSS.
The bug
The light Signal set's comment said "the old --v2-radius-*/--v2-shadow-* values above stay…". CSS comments don't nest, so the */ inside that glob closed the comment there. The browser read the comment's leftover text as a declaration it couldn't parse, and threw it away up to the next ;. That ; was the end of --v2-ink-2: #1d2433;, so the token went with it.
Measured in headless Chromium against main's v2.css: light --v2-ink-2 computes to "". --v2-fill-a, the next token, computes fine (#333c4e). The dark sets are unaffected.
So in light mode, these lost the artboard's #1d2433 and inherited their parent's colour instead:
V2AgentMemory.css: memory nav items and journal days
primitives.css: list-row values and tile names
V2SettingsPage.css: settings disclosure labels
V2AgentBYO.css: the BYO live line
V2PodBoard.css: the board focus strip
One more rule in v2.css reads var(--v2-ink-2, var(--v2-text-primary)) and took its fallback.
The fix
Reword the comment ("the old --v2-radius and --v2-shadow values"). After the fix, Chromium computes light --v2-ink-2 as #1d2433.
This is a visible change, in light mode only: the eight rules above take #1d2433, the colour the artboard specifies.
Why the tests didn't catch it
signalTokens.test.ts pins every token by regex on the raw text, which still read --v2-ink-2: #1d2433;. Two new tests read comments the way CSS does (non-nesting strip):
no comment in v2.css ends early: no */ survives the strip.
each Signal token opens its own declaration in every set: across the light, dark and prefers-color-scheme sets, each token must follow a ; or { once comments are stripped.
Reverse check: on main's v2.css both tests are red. The second names exactly light --v2-ink-2. With the fix, both are green (signalTokens 11/11; the ten suites that read v2.css, 393/393). Every other .css file under frontend/src and frontend/design-system was scanned the same way, and none has the bug.
Review
One round, Tier 1. A fresh reviewer independently confirmed four things: the error-recovery reading, that the fix is complete, that both tests are red on main and green on the branch, and the visible effect. It found the eighth consumer, the fallback rule, which this description and the commit message now include. Verdict: PASS.

Walkthrough
The change updates a comment about legacy Signal tokens and adds tests for CSS comment integrity and artboard token declarations in light, dark-selector, and prefers-color-scheme sets.
Changes: Signal token checks
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Comment and regression checks frontend/src/v2/v2.css, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/signalTokens.test.ts
The comment now names --v2-radius and --v2-shadow as legacy values. Tests check that CSS comments do not end early and that artboard tokens begin declarations in the light, dark-selector, and prefers-color-scheme sets.

Update the negative-scan test using asCssReadsIt to include a known stray `*/`

scan ran while retaining the existing check that v2.css contains no stray

…2-ink-2
The light Signal set's comment read "the old --v2-radius-*/--v2-shadow-* values".
CSS comments don't nest, so the `*/` in that glob ended the comment there, and
the browser threw away the rest of the comment's text up to the next `;`, which
was the end of `--v2-ink-2: #1d2433;`. Chromium computed light --v2-ink-2 as
empty, so the seven rules that read it (memory nav items, memory journal days,
settings disclosure labels, list-row values, tile names, the BYO live line,
the board focus strip) inherited their parent's colour instead of the
artboard's #1d2433. An eighth rule, v2.css's own
`var(--v2-ink-2, var(--v2-text-primary))`, took its fallback. Dark was
unaffected.
The token pins read the raw text, which still said #1d2433, so they passed. Two
new tests read comments the way CSS does: no `*/` may survive stripping, and
every Signal token must open its own declaration in all three sets.

On CodeRabbit's body-only point at 87d4ac6 (signalTokens.test.ts:109-110, a positive control for the negative */ scan): it's right. A scan that dropped its whole input would also pass that assertion. The fix is two lines: the scan has to keep a stray */ it's handed, and it has to keep --v2-ink-2: from v2.css. This PR was already in the merge queue when I got to it, and the point is Minor, so the control will land with #3222, which reworks the same v2.css tests.
Regenerated on main after the Connect, Your team and pod-chat lifts and
the comment fix (#3221), from docs/design/v2css-surface-map/unreferenced.md.
A selector goes when one of its classes is named nowhere in non-test source
and no dynamic class build can produce it.
Chromium's CSSOM of v2.css before and after differs by exactly the 364
listed selectors: none added, none changed, none removed off the list.
Tests that pinned a deleted rule drop that pin, and the type-floor
allowlist drops the 23 entries whose rules are gone.
