refactor(v2): delete 364 v2.css selectors nothing can match (TASK-758) - #3222
Sharpen TASK-758. This deletes the v2.css selectors that docs/design/v2css-surface-map/unreferenced.md (#3189) lists, after checking each one against current main. Nothing visible should change.
Regenerated 11-01 on main d44dd6e7, after the Connect (#3211), Your team (#3218) and pod-chat (#3210) lifts and the comment fix (#3221). Nothing was resolved by hand: the list was re-checked and the deletion re-run by the same tooling, and the proofs below were re-run on the new result.
What goes
The list has 377 lines and 346 distinct selectors. On current main:
335 distinct selectors are deleted, 364 occurrences in all (237 classes): 310 whole rules, plus one selector each trimmed from 12 comma lists. 65 comments that only headed deleted rules go with them. v2.css drops from 7,967 lines to 5,518. The diff is +10/−2,459 under --minimal; the default diff shows moved-block noise.
1 stays:.v2-pods-aside--open. V2PodsSidebar builds it as v2-pods-aside${…}.
10 were already gone from main.
How "nothing can match" was checked
Source. Each class a selector needs (outside :not()/:is()/:where()/:has()) was word-boundary matched against every non-test .ts, .tsx, .js, .jsx and .html file under frontend/src and frontend/public, plus frontend/index.html. A selector is deleted only when one of its classes is named nowhere.
Dynamic class names. I collected all 83 v2-…${ and 'v2-…' + prefixes in source, and no deleted class starts with one. There are no suffix builds on a variable base (${x}__y, ${x}--y).
Prod DOM. Every deleted selector was run through querySelectorAll on prod, signed in and read-only (non-GET API calls and the socket were aborted). That covered 10 routes (pod chat, board, settings, connectors, activity, Your team, bring your own, artifacts, connect, profile) at 1440 and 390, light and dark: 0 matches in all 40 contexts. Two selectors couldn't be queried once their states were stripped (.v2-chat__older-btn:hover:not(:disabled) and .v2-root .v2-activity__updates button:hover:not(:disabled)). Neither class is named anywhere in source. Prod runs 87518301, which predates the three lifts, so this check covers the old surfaces, and the source check covers what deploys next.
Proof that nothing visible moves
Chromium parsed v2.css before and after (CSSStyleSheet.replaceSync). Each sheet was flattened to (at-rule context | one selector | declarations), and the two multisets were diffed:
count
entries before → after
1,473 → 1,109
removed
364, every one listed
removed but not listed
0
added or changed
0
The diff runs on the browser's own parse, so it also catches what a text diff can't see:
a rule revived because an invalid selector left its comma list;
error recovery shifting around a broken comment;
hover, focus and other states no page walk reaches.
Reverse check on the instrument (first generation):
corrupted "after" sheet
result
a live selector dropped from a list
removedButNotListed: 1
one live declaration changed (gap: 6px → 7px)
addedOrChanged: 2, one per selector in that rule
Tests
v2-layout-invariants.test.ts and v2-type-floors.test.ts lose only assertions on rules that are gone:
the composer's send/mode buttons, composer-input-wrap and composer-hint;
Activity's agent grid and board rows;
23 type-floor allowlist entries.
The queue-actions pin now matches its trimmed comma list. Frontend: 2,286/2,286 under Jest, 32/32 under node --test.
The second commit carries CodeRabbit's point from #3221. The comment scan in signalTokens.test.ts gets a positive control, so a scan that dropped its whole input can't pass as clean.
Review
One round, Tier 1, by a fresh reviewer on the first generation: PASS. It parsed both sheets, took every removed occurrence, and grepped every class across non-test source; the only hit was the v2-root ancestor. It also re-derived the dynamic prefixes, and confirmed that every trimmed list keeps its live selectors unchanged and that braces balance. The regeneration ran the same tooling, and its own CSSOM diff and live match are the figures above.
frame-diff
The row asks for 28 before/after pairs: 7 surfaces × 1440/390 × light/dark. The before set predates the lifts' deploy, so the lifts will move pairs on their own. The CSSOM diff above is what proves this PR changes nothing.
frame-diff before set, prod at 11:10Z (backend 8751830), artboard pinned at main da7b9203, signed in as Lily (read-only: frame-diff aborts every non-GET API call). Each pair is live vs the artboard frame; F22 needs every row unchanged after the deploy.

Routes: sidebar and chat on the Sharpen pod, its board, /v2/settings, /v2/connectors, /v2/agents/otto/default and its memory page. The full report.json sets are kept with the CTO builder state, and the after set will be posted here beside these.
One review round (D218), Tier 1, by a fresh subagent with no prior context. It ran its own checks on the worktree:
Liveness, all 367 removed occurrences (239 classes): grepped across non-test source in frontend/src, public and index.html. The only hit was the v2-root ancestor, and every selector that names it also needs a dead class.
Dynamic prefixes: re-derived (94 lines). No removed class starts with one.
Comma lists: every trimmed list keeps its live selectors unchanged. 0 selectors were added.
Parse hazards: braces balance at 1,592/1,592. There are no empty blocks. The pre-existing stray */ (fixed in #3221) is identical before and after and sits above every deletion.
Tests: every removed or changed assertion names a class gone from both the CSS and non-test source. No live guard is weakened. 307/307 in the two pin suites.
One minor note, not a defect: a removed mobile pods-drawer comment described rules that are gone too.
The author's CSSOM diff (367 removed, 0 added or changed, two positive controls caught) agrees with this independent result.
The V2 stylesheet removes legacy rules, adds first-run and message styling, and revises Activity, mobile, and Chinese typography rules. The stylesheet invariant tests update selector checks and allowlists, and add an assertion for comment stripping.
Changes: V2 stylesheet and invariant updates

Summary
First-run and message styling frontend/src/v2/v2.css
The stylesheet adds first-run dialog and message-row styles, adjusts empty-state and inspector styling, and removes legacy pods, filter-bar, and related rules.
The tests revise selector checks and allowlists. The signal-token test checks that comment stripping preserves a stray */ and that the processed stylesheet contains --v2-ink-2.
The identified gap would allow a future selector reintroduction to escape this test suite, but it does not block this deletion from merging after normal checks.

The title names the main change: deleting v2.css selectors that nothing can match, with the ticket reference TASK-758. The changeset removes about 364 selector occurrences from frontend/src/v2/v2.css, and the title's count and scope match the description. It uses a conventional refactor prefix and is one sentence.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description states the purpose (deleting v2.css selectors listed in the unreferenced surface map), explains how each selector was checked (source grep, dynamic class prefixes, production DOM queries, and a Chromium CSSOM diff), and lists the test assertions and allowlist entries removed. This matches the changeset, which trims v2.css and the two v2 test files.

Regenerated on main after the Connect, Your team and pod-chat lifts and
the comment fix (#3221), from docs/design/v2css-surface-map/unreferenced.md.
A selector goes when one of its classes is named nowhere in non-test source
and no dynamic class build can produce it.
Chromium's CSSOM of v2.css before and after differs by exactly the 364
listed selectors: none added, none changed, none removed off the list.
Tests that pinned a deleted rule drop that pin, and the type-floor
allowlist drops the 23 entries whose rules are gone.

A scan that dropped its whole input would also find no stray `*/`. The
test now shows the scan keeps one it is handed and keeps v2.css's
declarations.

Add one structural guard for the TASK-758 deletions.
The existing retired-chat test covers three unrelated selectors. The current tests do not detect reintroduction of the deleted Activity or old-composer selectors. Add one grouped CSS/source absence test. It does not need a separate assertion for every removed occurrence.
The CSS comment containing .v2-chat__composer-hint must not count as a selector, so strip comments before the CSS search.

I'm declining the nitpick in CodeRabbit's review body at 079c6ea (a grouped test asserting the TASK-758 selectors stay absent from CSS and source).
If one comes back, it's dead CSS, not a regression. A rule for a class no source names renders nothing. The invariants suite pins rules that are load-bearing, and these no longer are.
The pin would block legitimate reuse. An absence assertion on a name like .v2-chat__send or .v2-activity__board-row would fail the next PR that rebuilds a send button or board row under the same BEM name, even though that rule would then be live.
