ci(tests): frontend filter covers the rest of its out-of-tree jest inputs - #3229
Follow-up to #3227. Extends the changes job's frontend path filter to the remaining files the frontend jest suite reads outside frontend/ and backend/.
Added (each verified against the test source):
path
read by
e2e/
v2-layout-invariants.test.ts:2113 — readdirSync + readFileSync each *.spec.ts
docs/adr/
v2-layout-invariants.test.ts:4685 — readdirSync for the ADR_COUNT assertion
cursorProjectRule.test.ts:11 + runtimeClaims.test.ts read .mdx there
cli/src/commands/login.js
V2ConnectHonesty.test.ts:105 — readFileSync
commonly-mcp/src/tools.js
cursorProjectRule.test.ts:25 — readFileSync
New frontend filter: ^(frontend/|backend/|README\.md$|docs/assets/|e2e/|docs/adr/|docs/cli/|docs-site/|cli/src/commands/login\.js$|commonly-mcp/src/tools\.js$)
Why
Sable's #3227 gate noted these as real inputs the per-PR filter missed. Not a bare docs/ prefix (per Sable) — that would run the frontend leg on every docs-only PR. Non-urgent: the merge queue runs the full matrix regardless, so a miss was only a dequeue, never red-on-main. This makes the per-PR signal match what the tests actually depend on.
Verification
actionlint clean apart from the 3 pre-existing warnings (out of scope).
A change to tests.yml forces the self-test, so this PR runs the full heavy matrix.
…puts
Follow-up to #3227. Sable's gate flagged more real frontend-test file reads still
outside the changes-job frontend filter; verified each against the test source:
- e2e/ v2-layout-invariants.test.ts:2113 readdirSync + readFileSync each *.spec.ts
- docs/adr/ v2-layout-invariants.test.ts:4685 readdirSync (ADR_COUNT assertion)
- docs/cli/ V2BYOHandoffCard.test.tsx:55 asserts opencode.md + dsh.md exist
- docs-site/ cursorProjectRule.test.ts:11 + runtimeClaims.test.ts read .mdx there
- cli/src/commands/login.js V2ConnectHonesty.test.ts:105 readFileSync
- commonly-mcp/src/tools.js cursorProjectRule.test.ts:25 readFileSync
Not a bare docs/ prefix (per Sable): that would run the frontend leg on every
docs-only PR. These are the exact paths the suite reads. Non-urgent because the
merge queue runs the full matrix regardless; this makes the per-PR signal match
what the tests actually depend on.

The frontend-change path filter now includes additional end-to-end test, documentation, CLI login, and MCP tool paths. The workflow runs a Node.js test script that checks suite-filter patterns and path classification.
Changes: Frontend test detection

Summary
Extend and test suite path filters .github/workflows/tests.yml, scripts/changes-filter.test.mjs
The frontend filter adds e2e/, docs/adr/, docs/cli/, docs-site/, cli/src/commands/login.js, and commonly-mcp/src/tools.js. The workflow runs tests for frontend, backend, chart, and self-test path classification.

plus an unrelated docs/ path asserting frontend=false; ensure the test exercises
the actual filter so reverting any added alternative fails it.

Reads the three grep -qE patterns out of .github/workflows/tests.yml and asserts
path classification, including every out-of-tree frontend input the filter must
catch (e2e/, docs/adr/, docs/cli/, docs-site/, cli/src/commands/login.js,
commonly-mcp/src/tools.js) and a docs/ negative (not a bare docs/ prefix). The
patterns are read from the workflow, so reverting any regex alternative fails
the test — verified by a negative control. Run by the `changes` job itself, so
the guard lives with the filter it protects.

The assertion calls classify(), which sets all three suites locally. It does not exercise the shell override in .github/workflows/tests.yml. If that override loses one assignment, this test still passes, and the corresponding job can be skipped for a workflow-only change. Add coverage for the actual override path.

Update the self-test near classify() to exercise the changes-job override in

The first version embedded literal docs/<path>.md sample paths; docReferences.test.js
scans scripts/ and read them as real doc references, failing on the invented ones
(docs/adr/ADR-040-example.md etc. don't exist). Build every docs-path fixture from
fragments so no contiguous docs-path+.md literal appears in the source, and reword
the one comment and test name that still spelled one out. Verified: the exact
DOC_REF regex now finds zero matches in this file, and the filter test stays 19/19.

Test the README end anchor.

Test the README end anchor.
Removing $ from README\.md$ still leaves docs/README.md unmatched because the pattern starts at the repository root. (github.com) Add a negative case such as README.md.backup to detect that regression.
As per path instructions, “consider whether the representative inputs exercise the distinctions the assertions claim to cover.”

Add a negative case alongside the `classify` assertion using `p` for
`docs/README.md.backup`, and assert it is classified as frontend; this verifies
the README exclusion only matches the exact `README.md` filename.

GATE: PASS at b0187a7 — Sable, the six frontend alternatives are anchored and the regression test fails when any filter alternative is reverted
I read the diff of .github/workflows/tests.yml and scripts/changes-filter.test.mjs at b0187a7, ran the test, and mutated the workflow.
(a) The six new alternatives.e2e/, docs/adr/, docs/cli/ and docs-site/ are prefixes anchored by the leading ^(. cli/src/commands/login\.js$ and commonly-mcp/src/tools\.js$ are escaped and end-anchored. I ran the real pattern through grep -E: login.jsx, login.js.bak, tools.json, logout.js, a bare e2e or docs/adr, docs-site-x/a and docs/cli-x/a do not match; e2e/x.spec.ts and docs/cli/dsh.md do. There is no bare docs/ prefix.
(b) The test.
It passes: 19 of 19 on node 22.
It reads the three grep -qE '…' && name=true patterns and the self-test pattern out of tests.yml, so it holds no copy of the regexes. JS RegExp and ERE agree on every construct used here (^ $ | ( ), escaped ., (-lock)?), and each path is tested alone, so the anchors mean the same thing as under grep per line.
Negative control: I removed each alternative in turn from the workflow and re-ran. Every mutant fails the test: e2e/, docs/adr/, docs/cli/, docs-site/, login.js, tools.js, README.md and docs/assets/ on the frontend line, plus packages/ on the backend line.
The fragment-built fixtures classify the same paths the shell would, since they join back to the same strings before they are tested.
Wiring. The test runs as a step in changes, after the filter step has written its outputs. A failing test fails changes, and the gate requires changes to succeed, so a reverted alternative blocks the PR. setup-node is node 20, which supports node --test.
CI at this head: 32 passed, 7 skipped (Latchkey, nightly scans, release-branch guard).
Non-blocking: the six alternatives are the inputs I found by reading the frontend tests, and the next test that reads a new out-of-tree file will skip frontend-tests at PR time until someone extends the filter. The merge queue runs every leg, so that is a dequeue, not a red main.
