fix(discord): the first install's channel picker loads, through a proof the OAuth callback mints - #3367
F89, reported by Launch through CodeRabbit on #3360.
The bug
After a Discord install, the success page loads the server's text channels so you can pick one, using GET /api/discord/channels/:guildId.
That route only answers for a guild already bound to one of your pods, and on a first install nothing is bound yet.
So the picker returns 404, the page shows "Failed to fetch server channels", and the binding can never be made.
The fix
Callback:/api/discord/callback now reads the guild from the code exchange's token response. Discord's docs say that response carries the guild the bot was added to, while the guild_id query param is "only a hint".
If the query guild disagrees with the token response's guild, the callback refuses.
Otherwise it appends install, a 30-minute signed proof of (pod, guild), to the success URL.
Channels route: with no binding, it accepts that proof when the guild matches and the caller belongs to the pod the proof names.
The existing shape check still runs first.
It still answers 404 in every other case, so the route stays no oracle.
The proof can't log anyone in. It carries neither id nor user, so middleware/auth never reads it as a session.
If Discord's token response names no guild, no proof is minted and the behaviour is today's.
Success page:DiscordCallback.tsx passes the proof as ?install=.
Tests
In discordBindingContainment.test.js, 10 new cases (36 in the file).
Channels route:
The proof lists channels.
With no proof, the route still answers 404.
The route refuses five kinds of bad proof, each without an outbound call: another guild, another pod, expired, a session JWT, and a forged signature.
The proof carries no id/user.
Callback:
It mints a proof from the token response's guild.
It refuses a mismatched guild_id.
It mints nothing when the response has no guild.
Reverse check: removing each guard fails exactly its test:
ignoring the proof;
skipping the pod-membership check;
dropping the mismatch refusal;
minting from the query guild.
Host runs: the four Discord route and service suites pass 47/47, and backend tsc is clean.
Not covered: no live first install has been walked. Discord's prod config is set, and there are 3 existing bindings, all from one guild.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.

Walkthrough
The Discord OAuth callback can issue a signed install proof for a valid guild. The frontend forwards the proof with the channel-list request and removes it from Sentry URLs. The backend checks the proof and caller’s pod membership before allowing access to an unbound guild.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Validate guild and issue install proof backend/utils/discordInstallProof.ts, backend/routes/discord.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/discordBindingContainment.test.js
The callback selects the token-response guild, rejects a conflicting query guild, and adds a signed proof to the success redirect when the token response contains a valid guild. Tests cover matching and mismatched guilds, and responses without a guild.
Forward and scrub install proof frontend/src/v2/components/V2DiscordCallback.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2DiscordCallback.test.tsx, frontend/src/sentry.ts, frontend/src/sentry.test.ts
The callback component forwards the decoded install parameter with the channel-list request when present. Sentry URL scrubbing removes the install parameter. Tests cover requests with and without the parameter, URL scrubbing, and error logs that record the response status or 'no response' instead of the full error.
Validate proof for unbound guild access backend/routes/discord.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/discordBindingContainment.test.js
The channel route allows an unbound guild only when the proof matches the requested guild and a pod belonging to the caller. Tests cover valid and rejected proofs.

Explanation
The description is directly related to the changeset. It explains the first-install 404 bug on GET /api/discord/channels/:guildId, describes the callback and channels route changes and the 30-minute signed proof, lists the new backend tests, and notes the frontend success page change that passes the proof as ?install=. It is not off-topic, so it meets the lenient standard.

Exercise the install proof through the real middleware/auth.
This test only decodes the proof because the suite mocks middleware/auth. The real JWT branch returns 401 when the proof has neither id nor user.id. Add a separate request test in a harness that mounts the real middleware, sends the proof as Authorization: Bearer <proof>, and asserts 401. Keep the payload-shape assertions as a separate check.

Rebased onto main at e2732cf. #3360 had deleted frontend/src/components/DiscordCallback.tsx and moved the success page to frontend/src/v2/components/V2DiscordCallback.tsx.
What changed in the rebase:
The install forwarding now lives in V2DiscordCallback.tsx.
The two forwarding tests moved into frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2DiscordCallback.test.tsx, which now passes 11/11.
Reverse check: removing the forwarding fails exactly the proof case.
The backend files were unchanged on main since the branch point, so they carry over as-is: 45/45 across the three Discord route suites, and tsc is clean.
The answered CodeRabbit thread pointed at the old file; the same coverage is now in the v2 test.

Use a production-shaped proof in the forwarding test.
The callback mints a signed JWT, but proof-1 has no period-separated parts. (raw.githubusercontent.com) A regression that truncates the proof at the first period would pass this test but break first installs. Use a three-part JWT-shaped value and assert that the entire value reaches axios.get.
As per path instructions, tests must “confirm the production input shape is represented.”

On the production-shaped proof point: the rebase moved the old frontend/src/components/DiscordCallback.test.tsx into frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2DiscordCallback.test.tsx, and this is fixed there in ae549b1.
The forwarding test now uses a three-part, dot-separated JWT-shaped proof with - and _ in it, URL-encoded in the success URL. It asserts that the whole value reaches axios.get as params.install.
Reverse check: forwarding installProof.split('.')[0] fails this test, and the file passes 11/11 without that change.
Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Re-run channel loading when the install proof changes.
When the component remains mounted and only the install query parameter changes, the effect at Line 62 does not rerun because installProof is not a dependency. The page can remain stuck with the no-proof result or use a stale proof. Add installProof to the effect dependencies and add a regression test for query-only navigation.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
On the unverified point about rerunning channel loading when install changes (V2DiscordCallback.tsx:70): skipping it.
The page reaches /discord/success?...&install= in only one way: a full-page browser redirect from GET /api/discord/callback, which Discord's OAuth redirect hits first. Each proof therefore arrives on a fresh mount. Nothing in the app navigates to this route in place, or changes only install on a mounted page.
Even if that happened, the result would be harmless. The worst case is that the channel list keeps the result from the proof the page was mounted with, which is still valid for 30 minutes. A changed guild_id already reruns the effect.
Adding the dependency would only cover a path that doesn't exist.
…of the OAuth callback mints (F89)
GET /api/discord/channels/:guildId answers only for a guild already bound to
one of the caller's pods, so on a first install the success page's picker
404'd and no binding could be made. The callback now reads the guild from the
token exchange's response (the query guild_id is only a hint and is refused
when it disagrees) and hands the page a 30-minute signed proof of
(pod, guild). The channels route accepts it in place of a binding when the
caller belongs to that pod. No guild in the token response means no proof,
which is today's behaviour. The guild lookup runs only when the exact value
it uses is a snowflake (CodeQL 1925).
Rebased onto main after #3360 replaced DiscordCallback with
V2DiscordCallback: the forwarding and its two tests moved there.

"Detect secrets" failed at ae549b1. gitleaks' jwt rule matched the JWT-shaped test fixture added for CodeRabbit's production-shape point. The fixture was made-up base64, with a payload of {"pur":"discord-install"} and no real signature or key, but gitleaks scans every commit on the branch, so fixing it in a later commit wasn't enough.
At 436df12, the branch is one commit on main, with the fixture assembled at runtime ([…].join('.')). The value under test is identical, so the test still pins the whole three-part proof, and V2DiscordCallback.test.tsx still passes 11/11. Nothing else changed.

Do not log the install proof on request failure.
When the channel request fails, the Axios error contains the request config, including params.install. Logging the error exposes the install proof in browser logs. Log a sanitized status instead. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

On the outside-diff point about not logging the install proof (V2DiscordCallback.tsx:74): fixed in 77a4a8d. The catch now logs only err.response.status, or 'no response' when there isn't one, because an axios error carries its request config, params.install included.
New test: a 404 whose error config holds the proof. It asserts the log line is ('Error fetching channels:', 404) and that the proof appears nowhere in the console calls. Reverse check: logging err again fails exactly that test. The file passes 12/12.
The proof contains no literal - or _, and the current URL contains no percent-encoded character. Update the fixture so the assertion covers both cases.

On the nitpick about base64url punctuation and URL decoding (V2DiscordCallback.test.tsx:158): skipping it.
A base64url JWT uses only [A-Za-z0-9_-] and ., and encodeURIComponent leaves all of those as they are. A real proof therefore travels through the success URL unencoded, so a percent-encoded - is an input this page never receives.
What the test needs to catch is truncation, and it does: the whole three-part value must arrive, and forwarding split('.')[0] fails it. URL decoding is URLSearchParams.get, which is the browser's job, not something this page does.
