Summary

ComfyUI Tests has been red on main since 6162aad, and since ffc910c it has been red for a second reason. Every PR that touches the comfy paths inherits both failures (e.g. #112). Two commits, one per root cause:

  1. fix(comfy): the training nodes never loaded (first bad commit ffc910c). ffc910c added a module-level V1 NODE_CLASS_MAPPINGS = {'ZoneIPAdapterFace': …} to comfyui/custom_nodes/zone_lora/__init__.py. When that dict exists, the pinned ComfyUI loader (nodes.py load_custom_node @ 30bdda1e) registers it and returns, so it never calls comfy_entrypoint. As a result, ZoneLoraExtension.get_node_list() was ignored, and ZoneLoadTrainDataset, ZoneLoadTrainFolder, ZoneTrainLoRA, ZoneStageTrainingArtifact, ZoneProbeLoss, ZoneProbeGradient and ZoneCleanupTrainingRun never loaded. This is a production bug as well as a CI one: a real ComfyUI with this extension rejects every train and probe graph that zone sends.
    • ZoneIPAdapterFace is now a V3 io.ComfyNode. Its node id, inputs, defaults, range, category and MODEL output are unchanged, and execute contains the old apply body unchanged.
    • The node is listed in get_node_list(), and the V1 dict is removed.
    • The graph runner/zone_comfy/src/people.rs injects (model, clip_vision, image, ipadapter_name, strength) still matches, and a new test now checks this.
  2. fix(scripts): ensurepip failed in the CI venv (first bad commit 6162aad). install_trainer() in scripts/setup-comfyui-macos.sh created .venv-train and .venv-train-llm with a plain python -m venv. That bootstraps pip through ensurepip even when ZONE_TRAIN_SKIP_PIP=1, and on the ubuntu runner, inside the test's nested venv, ensurepip exits 1. CI showed Command '[…/.venv-train/bin/python3.13', '-m', 'ensurepip', '--upgrade', '--default-pip']' returned non-zero exit status 1, which failed test_install_trainer_inherits_comfy_site_packages. Both venvs are now created with --without-pip, and python -m ensurepip --upgrade runs only when a pip install follows (ZONE_TRAIN_SKIP_PIP unset). For .venv-train it runs straight after the venv is created and before comfy-site.pth is written. Otherwise ensurepip could see Comfy's own pip through the .pth and skip installing one into the venv.

Behaviour differences

ComfyUI extension

  • All eight zone nodes now load: the seven training nodes plus the face node. Before this PR, only ZoneIPAdapterFace loaded.
  • ZoneIPAdapterFace now has the display name Zone IP-Adapter Face. Before, the UI showed the raw id. Its id, category (zone), inputs and output are unchanged, so saved graphs and the Rust-built graph still apply.
  • ZoneIPAdapterFace runs through the V3 execution path (execute classmethod, io.NodeOutput) instead of the V1 FUNCTION = 'apply' instance method. Its output is the same.
  • The extension has no V1 NODE_CLASS_MAPPINGS any more. comfy_entrypoint is its only entry point.

Host trainer install (--install-trainer)

  • With ZONE_TRAIN_SKIP_PIP=1, neither trainer venv gets pip any more.
  • Without it, a new venv gets pip from ensurepip --upgrade at the point where venv used to bootstrap it: straight after creation, before comfy-site.pth exists. That is the same bundled pip, so a fresh real install ends in the same state as before.
  • An existing venv is not recreated (unchanged). If it already has pip, ensurepip --upgrade leaves it as is.
  • One new edge case: a .venv-train first created by a skipped run has no pip and already has comfy-site.pth. If a later real run reuses it, ensurepip can see Comfy's pip through the .pth and install none into the venv, so pip install then runs through Comfy's pip. Before this PR every venv had its own pip. Only a skipped run (tests or CI) creates such a venv; deleting .venv-train restores the normal path.

Verification

Run locally on macOS (arm64). I reproduced the workflow in a scratch directory:

  • I checked out ComfyUI at the pinned 30bdda1ef13a3a34fce2cd2fec633f15d832122a and copied zone_lora into its custom_nodes, as the workflow does.
  • I used a Python 3.13 venv with the versions from comfyui/requirements-ci.lock. The +cpu torch wheels and the hash lock are Linux-only, so I installed the same versions without --require-hashes, using macOS torch 2.9.1.
  • I ran the tests with COMFYUI_INSTALL_DIR=<checkout> python -m unittest discover -s tests -v from comfyui/.

Results:

  • Base a376d116: test_graph_contract failed the same way it does in CI: failures=11, errors=3, including KeyError: 'ZoneLoadTrainDataset' / 'ZoneStageTrainingArtifact' and test_repository_extension_is_part_of_the_loaded_registry.
  • This branch: the full suite passed, Ran 234 tests … OK (skipped=3), and test_setup_macos passed 9/9 under Homebrew Python 3.13. The three skips are the opt-in ZONE_LIVE_TRAIN tests.
  • Regression tests:
    • test_repository_extension_is_part_of_the_loaded_registry now also requires ZoneLoadTrainFolder. It fails on base and passes here.
    • test_rust_face_graph_matches_the_pinned_registry is new. It parses inject_ipadapter in people.rs and validates that graph against the loaded schema. As a mutation check, I renamed the strength input and the test failed.
    • test_rust_face_constants_fit_the_face_node is new. It checks that IPADAPTER_STRENGTH in people.rs lies within the node's strength min/max and that IPADAPTER_FILE equals face_node.PLUS_FACE. As a mutation check, I raised min to 0.5 and the test failed.
    • test_face_node_at_zero_strength_returns_the_model_untouched is new. It runs the node through ComfyUI's own dispatcher (execution._async_map_node_over_list, which calls VALIDATE_CLASS, PREPARE_CLASS_CLONE and then FUNCTION, i.e. EXECUTE_NORMALIZED) and asserts that the output is the same model object (assertIs). As a mutation check, I made it return a fresh object and the test failed.
    • In test_install_trainer_inherits_comfy_site_packages, the new assertion that no trainer venv gets pip when the install is skipped fails without the script fix (2 subtests) and passes with it.
  • sh -n scripts/setup-comfyui-macos.sh passed. A --without-pip venv followed by python -m ensurepip --upgrade gives a working pip.

Not verified:

  • The ubuntu ensurepip failure itself; I could not reproduce it on macOS. This PR's CI run is the check for it.
  • A real face-identity generation through ZoneIPAdapterFace, which needs SDXL and IP-Adapter weights. Only the schema, the registry and the zero-strength path are tested.
  • A real trainer install with pip.
  • Linting with ruff or black; no Python linter is configured in the repo.

Since 6162aad the trainer venvs are created with a plain `python -m venv`,
which bootstraps pip through ensurepip even when ZONE_TRAIN_SKIP_PIP=1.
Inside the nested CI venv on ubuntu that ensurepip call fails, so
test_install_trainer_inherits_comfy_site_packages has kept ComfyUI Tests red
on main. Both venvs are now created with --without-pip, and ensurepip runs
only when a pip install follows. For the SDXL trainer it runs straight after
the venv is created and before comfy-site.pth is written, so it cannot see
Comfy's own pip through the .pth and skip installing one into the venv.

The test now also asserts that neither trainer venv gains pip when the
install is skipped, which fails on every platform without this change.

ffc910c added a module-level V1 NODE_CLASS_MAPPINGS for ZoneIPAdapterFace.
The pinned ComfyUI loader registers that dict and returns before it ever
reaches comfy_entrypoint, so every V3 node in ZoneLoraExtension stopped
loading: dataset, staging, training, the loss and gradient probes and run
cleanup. Training graphs were rejected by a real ComfyUI as well as by the
graph contract tests, which have kept ComfyUI Tests red on main since.

ZoneIPAdapterFace is now a V3 io.ComfyNode with the same node id, inputs,
defaults, ranges, category and MODEL output, and its execute body is the
old apply body unchanged. It is listed in get_node_list with the training
nodes, and the V1 dict is gone so the extension is the only entry point.

The registry test now also requires ZoneLoadTrainFolder. New tests parse
the face graph people.rs injects and validate it against the loaded
schema, check that people.rs IPADAPTER_STRENGTH lies inside the node's
strength bounds and IPADAPTER_FILE matches PLUS_FACE, and run the
zero-strength pass-through through ComfyUI's own V3 dispatch.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Compatibility

    • Updated the Zone LoRA face node to use ComfyUI’s current node interface while preserving its inputs and behavior.
  • Setup

    • Training environments now skip pip setup and dependency installation when ZONE_TRAIN_SKIP_PIP=1; otherwise, pip is bootstrapped before dependencies are installed.

Walkthrough

The Zone IP-Adapter node now uses ComfyUI's schema and execution API. Tests validate the Rust graph configuration and zero-strength behavior. The macOS setup script creates both trainer environments without pip and bootstraps pip only when pip installation is not skipped.

Changes

Zone IP-Adapter node API

Layer / File(s) Summary
Migrate the face node API
comfyui/custom_nodes/zone_lora/__init__.py, comfyui/custom_nodes/zone_lora/face_node.py
ZoneIPAdapterFace now declares a ComfyUI schema and returns io.NodeOutput from execute. The extension declares its node-list return type, and the legacy NODE_CLASS_MAPPINGS is removed.
Validate Rust graph and node behavior
comfyui/tests/test_graph_contract.py
Tests extract and validate the Rust face graph against the pinned registry, check configured adapter inputs, and test the zero-strength result. The expected registry mappings now include ZoneLoadTrainFolder.

macOS trainer virtual environments

Layer / File(s) Summary
Set up trainer environments and verify skipped pip
scripts/setup-comfyui-macos.sh, comfyui/tests/test_setup_macos.py
The script creates both trainer environments without pip. When pip installation is enabled, it bootstraps pip before installing dependencies. The test checks that both environments lack pip when installation is skipped.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 69cbe

The graph test could miss a future mismatch in face-node inputs. The current change remains mergeable with this bounded coverage gap addressed or accepted.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 69cbe

The face-node migration preserves its execution behavior, and the documented deployments restrict workflow access through loopback, a private network or an authenticated bridge. Restoring the training nodes nevertheless exposes broader filesystem operations than the managed training workflow permits. These warrant attention if workflow submitters have different trust levels; unauthenticated external exposure was not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Restored registration makes ZoneLoadTrainFolder available to workflow submitters. Its folder string is joined directly to the input directory without containment or symlink validation, allowing absolute or parent-relative paths to select process-readable PNGs and adjacent caption files outside that directory. The managed manifest loader’s UUID and containment controls do not protect this separate entrypoint. The implementation predates this PR, but its restored dispatchability changes exposure. Privacy impact is conditional on workflow submitters being less trusted than the ComfyUI process owner; public unauthenticated access was not established.
  • Low · security · inferred: Direct ZoneTrainLoRA workflows can choose a shared output basename without following the managed runner’s unique run namespace. Training publishes progress, checkpoints and final weights under that name without a node-level ownership or no-overwrite check; cleanup accepts only UUID-shaped artifact names. Repeated direct submissions can therefore target the same artifact, while nonconforming names fall outside the cleanup contract. These implementations are unchanged, but registration restores their availability. Cross-principal integrity impact remains conditional on shared workflow access; normal runner-generated UUID names substantially limit accidental collisions.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant authority is that of a principal able to submit custom workflows. Folder loading can reach process-readable PNGs and adjacent captions outside the input root; training targets the shared output LoRA namespace. Container execution limits this to container-accessible files, while native execution inherits the runtime user’s filesystem access. No cross-service privilege escalation or unauthenticated internet reachability was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A workflow submitter could select an outside directory through ZoneLoadTrainFolder and receive its image and caption data within the workflow, or select an existing training output basename. These are source-supported conditional paths, not verified external exploits. The PR changes node reachability rather than introducing these implementations.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The optional bridge rejects mismatched tokens with a constant-time comparison and requires a token of at least 32 characters at startup. This protects entry to the graph service, but the shared token does not identify individual run owners. Documented loopback and private-network deployments are stronger counterevidence than caller-side optional token headers alone.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Unique managed-run identifiers and cancellation-aware cleanup reduce collisions and unsafe recovery. Direct workflows do not inherit all those guarantees, so a shared-trust deployment should not treat generated-name validation alone as tenant isolation or complete recovery protection.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check the values used by the Rust graph, not only the constants.

If inject_ipadapter uses an out-of-range strength or a different adapter filename, these assertions can still pass. They read the constant declarations, while validate_graph() skips unresolved expressions and does not check ipadapter_name choices. Assert that the extracted face node uses IPADAPTER_STRENGTH and IPADAPTER_FILE, then validate those resolved values.
