docs(specs): architecture direction, whole-repo review and the designs behind them - #868
Adds the architecture direction for ecp and the evidence behind it, so the refactor can run across many sessions without re-deriving it. docs/specs/2026-10-25-architecture-direction.md names 11 structural areas, five shared contracts, a phased lane order and latency gates. docs/specs/2026-10-25-architecture-review.md holds the whole-repo review: 14 subsystems, 178 findings with tier and evidence, the small local fixes, the modules to keep as they are. Designs A and B and their cross-check are archived beside them. Docs only. Two-way door: a revert removes the pages. Blast radius: no code symbol changes; the readers are maintainers and the agent sessions that will implement the slices.
What happened
Designs A (owner_class split) and B (shared resolution ladder) lived only in a PR #861 worktree. A first draft placed them beside two more areas. The owner then asked for complete coverage of the repo, ranked by ecp's own priorities (per-query latency, answers that do not mislead the agent, signal density). Thirteen read-only reviewers, one per subsystem, found the defects; the main session re-ran the key T1 claims. GitNexus and codegraph were read at source to see how peer tools handle the same problems. codex reviewed the plan for conflicts and execution order in five rounds until lanes, order and gates came back with no new finding.
What changed
Direction page: areas 1-4 (resolution rules, owner split, current-build ranking, workspace scope) and new areas 5-11 (one read path per command, one routing fact, post-parse endpoints, one route record, Cypher exact-or-refuse, a shared parse_file driver, test architecture).
Priority check and a certainty table that separates "defect certain" from "target sufficient".
The incremental overlay: every builder output gets a refresh mode; measured cost on this repo and vscode.
Latency gates measured on vscode (clean 164 ms, first query after an edit 363 ms) and the protocol that turns them into gates.
Contracts C1-C5, a cross-area conflict table, lessons from peer tools, and an order in phases 0-3 with lanes R, F and P.
Review page: per-subsystem verdicts, findings, small fixes, deletion candidates under the LLM-utility filter, healthy modules, blind spots.
Designs A and B: answers to the three CodeRabbit threads (overload uids under I4, an exact R14 baseline, the mixed-version build window).
How to verify
Every relative .md link under docs/specs/2026-10-2* resolves; no page contains a local /home/ path (grep -c prints 0).
Code citations: codex fact-checked both pages (35 items, all applied), then four conflict rounds; reports are summarised in the commit messages.
Reproductions named on the pages were re-run by the main session where the page says re-run.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Added architecture documents describing proposed changes to resolution, lexical identity, build ordering, imports, graph reads, routing, edge evidence, routes and contracts, Cypher behavior, parsing, and tests.
Added a cross-check of two architecture proposals, including risks, open questions, and implementation sequencing.
Added an architecture review inventory summarizing findings, evidence status, proposed local fixes, and areas for further measurement.
The documents record proposals and findings only; no implementation or tests were added.
Adds the direction page and archives designs A and B with their
cross-check from the PR #861 worktree. The page folds in a codex design
review: a smaller first round for the shared ladder, two identity cases
for the owner split, a rising-name ranking rule for the current build,
and a new area for workspace-scoped import resolution.

docs/specs/2026-10-25-architecture-review.md
Walkthrough
This pull request adds architecture direction and review documents, detailed proposals for shared resolution and lexical identity, and a cross-check of those proposals. The documents describe proposed changes and state that no implementation or runtime checks were performed.
The document catalogs subsystem findings, proposed local fixes, measurements, deletion candidates, and review limitations.
Resolution and lexical identity designs docs/specs/2026-10-23-shared-resolution-design.md, docs/specs/2026-10-23-owner-split-design.md
The designs propose shared resolution outcomes and fallback rules, plus lexical-parent identity, graph-format changes, language admissions, and verification plans.
Architecture direction and cross-area contracts docs/specs/2026-10-25-architecture-direction.md
The document defines shared contracts and staged proposals covering resolution, identity, build ranking, workspace imports, graph reads, routing, edge evidence, routes, Cypher, parser structure, and tests.
Design cross-check and sequencing docs/specs/2026-10-23-architecture-designs-crosscheck.md
The document records findings and evidence, compares design claims and gaps, and proposes an implementation order.
coseto6125/egent-code-plexus#861: The design documents use PR #861 as a baseline and discuss its resolution and lexical identity work.
coseto6125/egent-code-plexus#864: PR #864 changes same-SHA build publication. The architecture direction proposes same-SHA ranking and a repository-and-SHA lock.
Merge Risk: Low · up to e4055
This documentation-only PR has a few inaccuracies and gaps in its design contracts, such as the stale-caveat count, the Area 2 identity proof gate and the parity harness key. They should be tidied before the designs are used as implementation gates, but they do not affect runtime behavior.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "docs(specs): architecture direction, whole-repo review and the designs behind them" matches the main change. The PR adds an architecture direction page, a whole-repo architecture review, and archived designs A and B with their cross-check, all under docs/specs. It is docs-only, and the title says so. It does not mention the PR's other content, such as the no-code-change nature or the latency gates, but it does not need to cover every detail. The raw summary and objectives describe the PR as adding docs, while the PR description says the review covers 14 subsystems, so the title's 'whole-repo review' is accurate to the description. Note: the objectives describe a four-area direction doc from PR #868, while the raw summary and description describe an 11-area direction doc; the title's wording fits the 11-area version and the review page, which the raw summary supports.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's intent. It has an Outcome section that states what changed and why, and it lists the files and their contents. It also has a How to verify section, which covers the test plan. The template's Summary bullets are not used as such; the author wrote prose sections instead. The verification section describes link checks, a grep check for local paths, and reproductions re-run by the main session, but it reads as a narrative rather than a bulleted checklist. Docs-only change, so no code tests exist. The content is substantive and specific, so the check passes on completeness.

266-269: 🎯 Functional Correctness
The stale-session behavior is an intentional, documented design choice. The design does not define a contract that requires stale state to be surfaced, so this review comment does not identify a defect to fix.

Fix the UID parity sentence.
Replace “Each case asserts four paths give equal uids per node” with “Each case asserts four-path UID parity per node.”

docs(specs): architecture direction for four structural changes
docs(specs): architecture direction, whole-repo review and the designs behind them
Oct 24, 2026
Add the three identity cases to Area 2’s proof contract.
The Area 2 proof and order currently cover only swapped trait implementations and sibling blocks. Add fixtures with expected identity outcomes for #[cfg] twins and same-name YAML Service/Deployment declarations. Define the canonical owner spelling for owner-form drift. If these cases are not part of this slice, mark each one as explicitly deferred or out of scope.
The generic C1 identity contract and shared harness do not define these cases. The documentation-only gap does not justify major severity, but it is a worthwhile design refactor.
