feat(linux): Adapters and its Proxy row work on Linux - #294
On Linux the Tools tab's Adapters said it works on Windows only, and the Diagnostics boxes Add network adapters and Add proxy settings were greyed out. Both now read Linux's own sources and fill the same rows as on Windows. Windows keeps every row, text and key it had.
What changes
beantester/netlink.py (new) - the netlink transport, moved out of sockdiag and shared with rtnetlink: bounds on attributes, a list the kernel says changed (NLM_F_DUMP_INTR) is marked, an answer not from the kernel is refused. sockdiag keeps its names; tests/test_sockdiag.py and tests/test_tcpreset.py are unchanged.
beantester/rtnetlink.py (new, read only) - the kernel's adapters, addresses and routes, and a route lookup (what ip route get asks). Without NLM_F_ACK that lookup's answer never ends (measured), so it asks for one. A list that changed while it was read is read again, three times at most.
adapters._Linux - the same AdapterRows:
an adapter whose driver reports no state (loopback, dummy, WireGuard: UNKNOWN) is up when it has a link;
the MAC is written as ip writes it;
each address's origin and DAD state come from its flags and lifetime, with a word of the program's own for an IPv6 lease the kernel cannot place;
each DNS server is listed at the adapter its route leaves through;
systemd-resolved's stub (127.0.0.53) is marked and not offered to the Control page;
the DHCP server and the DNS suffix are not shown: only NetworkManager's own files hold them.
proxy._Linux:
The desktop's settings (GNOME) come from gsettings, run as the person who typed sudo through setpriv (as root it reads root's settings - measured), with a minimal environment and a 2 s limit. The proxy's account and password lines are dropped unparsed.
The variables come from /etc/environment and the environment.d folders, case-sensitive. The person's files are read only when they own them.
Linux has no WinHTTP part, and a part a system lacks is not shown as unreadable.
paths.read_small_file - regular files only (a FIFO in a file's place cannot hang the worker), with an optional owner check.
GUI - the Adapters "?" sheet and two tips have Linux's own words. Ten new texts in en, pl and zh.
No-telemetry guard - "the package never spawns a process" becomes "the package spawns only the process named in SPAWN_ALLOWED": gsettings, from proxy.py, with a canary, the arrangement WIRE_ALLOWED has. strace -f -e connect, socket, execve on the exact command showed only AF_UNIX sockets to the system's account database: no D-Bus, no AF_INET/AF_INET6.
Linux capture smoke - a new Adapters phase compares the tool's read with ip -j in two places:
in the namespace, given an address with a lease, a deprecated one and a DAD duplicate (the same IPv6 address on both ends of a veth pair), each of which must be named;
on the runner as it is.
How it was checked
Before any code: a stdlib probe compared every decoded field with ip -j and found 0 differences:
on Ubuntu 26.04 (kernel 7.0.0, NetworkManager and systemd-resolved);
in a network namespace with veth, dummy, bridge, vlan, tun and WireGuard;
in WSL (6.18).
The fixtures of tests/test_rtnetlink.py are that kernel's own answers from the namespace, which uses documentation addresses only.
The Linux smoke on the same VM passes all phases. Two deliberate product breaks fail its Adapters phase, each named: a duplicate read as tentative, and UNKNOWN with a link read as unknown.
The desktop proxy, set for a moment and then restored, read the same as the person and under sudo (14-20 ms). A variables file in the person's environment.d was read under sudo, with its password masked in the report.
tools/ci_gui_render.py on real Tk in WSL: OK in pl, en and zh, with the Adapters panel built for real.
Mutations: 39 for the new and moved code, all caught. One survived at first: the smoke judge's DAD comparison had no case of its own. That case is added.
Added experimental Linux support for network adapter and proxy information. Adapter details include interface status, addresses, routes, DNS, and DHCP state; proxy information includes desktop settings and environment variables.
Diagnostics can now use Add network adapters and Add proxy settings on Linux.
Documentation
Updated the README, changelog, and translated help to explain Linux support and its data sources.
Clarified that TCP health checks and their row-menu actions remain Windows-only.
On Linux the Tools tab's Adapters said it works on Windows only, and
the Diagnostics boxes that add the adapters or the proxy to the report
were greyed out. Both now read Linux's own sources and fill the same
rows as on Windows.
- beantester/netlink.py (new): the netlink transport, out of sockdiag,
shared with rtnetlink. Bounds on attributes, a list the kernel says
changed is marked, an answer not from the kernel is refused.
sockdiag keeps its names; its tests are unchanged.
- beantester/rtnetlink.py (new, read only): the kernel's adapters,
addresses and routes, and a route lookup (what ip route get asks;
without NLM_F_ACK its answer never ends - measured). A list that
changed while it was read is read again.
- adapters: a Linux reader making the same rows. An adapter whose
driver reports no state (loopback, dummy, WireGuard) is up when it
has a link; the MAC is written as ip writes it; each address's
origin and DAD state come from its flags and lifetime, with a word of
the program's own for an IPv6 lease the kernel cannot place; each DNS
server is listed at the adapter its route leaves through, and
systemd-resolved's stub is marked and not offered to the Control
page. The DHCP server and the DNS suffix are not shown.
- proxy: a Linux reader. The desktop's settings come from gsettings,
run as the person who typed sudo (as root it reads root's - measured),
with a minimal environment and a time limit; the proxy's account and
password are never read. The variables come from /etc/environment and
the environment.d folders, case-sensitive, and the person's files are
read only when they own them. Linux has no WinHTTP part, and a part a
system lacks is not shown as unreadable.
- paths.read_small_file: regular files only, so a FIFO in a file's
place cannot hang the worker, with an optional owner check.
- The Adapters help and two tips have Linux's own words; Windows keeps
every key it had. Ten new texts in each language.
- The no-telemetry guard: the one child process the package may start
(gsettings, from proxy.py) is named by its place, with a canary, as
the sending functions are. gsettings was traced to open only local
sockets to the system's account database.
- The Linux capture smoke gains an Adapters phase: the tool's read
against ip -j, in the namespace (with an address with a lease, a
deprecated one and a DAD duplicate, each of which must be named) and
on the runner as it is.
Measured on Ubuntu 26.04 (kernel 7.0.0) and in WSL (6.18): every field
matched ip -j; the fixtures of tests/test_rtnetlink.py are that
kernel's own answers from a namespace with documentation addresses.

Walkthrough
Linux now has adapter and proxy readers. The change adds netlink support for adapter and route data, integrates Linux-specific sources into reports and the GUI, and updates documentation, translations, and validation.
Changes: Linux adapter and kernel data
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Netlink transport and route tables beantester/netlink.py, beantester/rtnetlink.py, beantester/sockdiag.py, tests/test_rtnetlink.py, tests/data/rtnetlink/*
The new shared netlink transport parses kernel messages and attributes. The rtnetlink reader builds link, address, and route tables, retries interrupted reads, and performs route lookups. Socket diagnostics now uses the shared transport.
Linux adapter data and reporting beantester/adapters.py, beantester/paths.py, beantester/nettools/adapters.py, tests/test_adapters_linux.py
The Linux backend maps kernel tables, sysfs data, and resolver data into adapter rows. It reports address state, gateways, metrics, DHCP, DNS attribution, and changing-table errors. File helpers read bounded regular files and resolve account home directories.
Linux proxy settings
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Linux proxy sources and reporting beantester/proxy.py, beantester/nettools/proxy.py, tests/test_proxy_linux.py, tests/test_no_telemetry.py, pyproject.toml
The Linux reader parses GNOME proxy settings and environment files. Proxy reporting distinguishes absent settings from read failures, applies case-insensitive variable matching, and adds Linux-specific notes.
Platform presentation and validation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Platform-specific presentation and documentation beantester/gui/toolbox/*, lang/*.json, README.md, CHANGELOG.md, beantester/nettools/diagnostics.py
The adapter panel selects Linux help and name tips. Diagnostics uses Linux-specific proxy tips. Documentation and translations describe Linux data sources and available actions.
Linux integration and regression checks tools/ci_linux_capture_smoke.py, tests/test_ci_linux_capture_smoke.py, tests/test_capabilities.py, tests/test_hot_path.py, tests/test_mutation_registry.py
Capability and hot-path checks include Linux adapters. The Linux capture smoke check compares adapter data and address states with ip -j.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(linux): Adapters and its Proxy row work on Linux" matches the main change. The PR adds Linux support for the Tools tab Adapters view and its Proxy row, which the raw summary and objectives both describe. The title uses a conventional-commit prefix and states the user-visible effect. It is 53 characters, within the roughly 140-character limit. The title does not use vague terms. It does not mention the shared netlink transport or the rtnetlink reader, which are supporting parts of the change.
Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
PASS. The PR adds tests for the changed runtime behavior: tests/test_rtnetlink.py, tests/test_adapters_linux.py, and tests/test_proxy_linux.py cover Linux netlink, adapter, proxy, and file-reading paths. tests/test_ci_linux_capture_smoke.py, tests/test_hot_path.py, and existing socket-diagnostic tests cover integration and the shared netlink refactor. Existing tests were not deleted. The changed capability and support assertions match the new Linux behavior. The process-spawn assertion was intentionally updated to allow gsettings, and the PR description documents that change and its guard.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
PASS: The PR changes Tkinter UI behavior only to select Linux-specific help and tooltip text. The changed GUI files do not add literal colors, fonts, sizes, margins, paddings, or corner radii, and they do not add duplicated controls. Existing layout uses shared space(), ROWS, and theme resources.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
No explicit desktop-robustness failure is introduced. The Linux code reads kernel tables, sysfs, resolver files, and environment files; it does not write settings or load assets from the working directory. Netlink uses AF_NETLINK for kernel data, and gsettings has a 2-second timeout. Adapter and diagnostic work runs on the existing ToolJob worker, shows a working state, and disables repeat requests while busy. No destructive action or whole-app admin request is added.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
No resource leak is introduced. netlink.exchange() wraps each netlink socket in with and closes it on success and exceptions (beantester/netlink.py:78-94); the refactored sockdiag and new rtnetlink callers use this transport. _speed() uses a context-managed file (beantester/adapters.py:615-623), and paths.read_small_file() closes its descriptor in finally (beantester/paths.py:482-499). The Linux gsettings call uses subprocess.run() with a timeout and captured pipes (beantester/proxy.py:391-396), so it does not leave a child process or pipe open. No new timer, handler, thread, unbounded queue, or cache is present.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The PR is cohesive. The title and description cover the Linux adapter/proxy feature, shared netlink extraction, GUI text, telemetry allowlist, smoke checks, and tests. The diff shows those changes plus matching README.md and CHANGELOG.md updates. The netlink module centralizes transport previously in sockdiag for the new rtnetlink reader; it does not add an unrelated duplicate. Existing Windows paths remain selected, and the added AdapterRow and proxy Reading fields have defaults, so no backward-incompatible public API or data-format change is evident.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
The diff adds a hardcoded user-home path in tests/test_proxy_linux.py:39: HOME = "/home/someone". This matches the prohibited local absolute path pattern. The other flagged values are reserved test fixtures, and the new print() calls report CI phase results rather than debug state.
Resolution
Replace HOME = "/home/someone" with a relative synthetic value or a tmp_path-derived home path, and update the affected assertions and helper defaults. Keep test proxy addresses in documentation-only ranges and verify that no real credentials or user-specific paths remain.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
The new Linux adapter reader performs quadratic work across system tables. In beantester/adapters.py, _Linux._row() scans all tables.addresses and all tables.routes for every link (lines 545-550), while rtnetlink.read() returns the complete route and address tables. With up to 1024 links and an uncapped route table, refresh cost grows as O(links × (addresses + routes)). The read runs on a worker, but the introduced repeated scans remain a clear scalability problem.
Resolution
Index addresses and routes by ifindex once after rtnetlink.read(), then pass each link only its pre-indexed addresses and routes to _row(). Preserve the existing filtering for default, unicast, and non-local routes. Add a test with multiple links and a large shared table that verifies the indexed path.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
FAIL: The new Linux settings reader follows links outside the intended environment directory and does not bound all input sources. _Linux._env_files() passes ~/.config/environment.d/*.conf paths to paths.read_small_file(), whose os.open(path, ...) follows symlinks and checks only the target owner. The added test explicitly expects a link to tmp/other/secret outside the environment directory to be read. _conf_names() also evaluates sorted(os.listdir(directory))[:MAX_ENV_FILES], so a huge directory is fully allocated and sorted before the limit applies. _run() uses subprocess.run(..., capture_output=True) without an output limit, and gnome_values() then processes the complete output.
Resolution
For user environment files, open relative to a directory file descriptor with O_NOFOLLOW and retain the owner check on the opened descriptor, or resolve and enforce containment under the approved directory. Allow resolver symlinks only through an explicit system-path allowlist. Replace _conf_names() with bounded directory enumeration that rejects or caps input before sorting. Replace _run() with bounded stdout/stderr collection that terminates the child when the cap is reached, then reject oversized output before calling gnome_values(). Use a bounded read for any remaining direct file reads such as _speed().
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The product readers are read-only, but the PR adds state-changing CI code. tools/ci_linux_capture_smoke.py creates interfaces, addresses, and a default route in the bntci namespace. Cleanup runs in finally and at the next start, but there is no signal or crash-safe cleanup, no saved pre-existing state, and no explicit visible restore action.
Resolution
Run the adapter smoke phase in a disposable, uniquely identified namespace whose resources cannot collide with existing state. Add signal-aware cleanup and an external or kernel-owned lifecycle mechanism for crash cleanup. Record created resources and remove them on normal stop, failure, and next start without deleting pre-existing resources.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The new Linux read paths can show raw exceptions. _Linux.adapters() converts an OSError to AdaptersUnavailable("", f"rtnetlink: {exc}"); nettools.adapters has no user-text key for that reason, so the status line falls back to Unreadable: rtnetlink: .... Linux proxy failures use _part() to expose TypeError/OSError: ... in detail notes and copied report lines. These messages do not provide a clear user action and expose exception text.
Resolution
Add localized user-facing error messages for Linux rtnetlink, GNOME proxy, and proxy-variable read failures. State what failed and what to do, such as “Could not read network adapters. Press Refresh to try again.” Keep exception types and raw details in the crash log only; do not pass them to the status line, detail notes, or copied report.

6. **New behaviour arrives with the test that guards it.** A new failure mode gets an exit
code, a test and a README row. A new mechanism in the decision pipeline gets unit tests.

## Conventions (enforced by tests)
- Code, comments and docstrings are in **English**, and so are commit messages and pull
request descriptions. This repository is public and its history is permanent: a comment or
a message cannot be unpublished, because the commit carrying it stays. Keep local paths,
machine names, addresses and credentials out of all of them. Quote the program - interface
text, command output, code - and not a person: a sentence from a chat or an issue is
somebody else's words. CI checks the mechanical half of this on every pull request.

## Pull requests
2. Run `ruff check` and `mypy` - both are gates on the pull request.
Semgrep runs in CI and needs no local setup. On Windows it installs but does not
scan, so run it from WSL if you want it locally.
Two of the ruff rules are ceilings pinned to the widest thing in the tree today
(`C90` complexity, `PLR0913` argument count), so they are green until something
grows past what already exists. If one fires, split the function - raising the
number in `pyproject.toml` is a decision for the maintainer, not a way to get a
build green.

## What a complete pull request looks like here
The change, the guard that catches its absence, an entry in the mutation registry when it
guards a behaviour, and the changelog lines. **A pull request that adds behaviour with no
guard is itself a finding**, and so is one that changes behaviour without touching the prose
that describes it - the READMEs describe current state, and drift there is invisible.

## Conventions (enforced by tests)
- **New functionality is merged with the test that guards it.** That is the policy, and the
two bullets above are what it looks like in practice. It is not left to good intentions:
`tests/test_mutation_registry.py` records which broken behaviour each test is supposed to
catch, and CI re-breaks them to prove the test actually reddens.

Review comment at @beantester/proxy.py at line 37:
Remove the `internal_tools` probe reference from the module docstring in
`proxy.py`, leaving the database description without the unavailable internal
directory or probe name.

- Four tests assumed the platform they ran on and failed on the Linux
runner: the Adapters "?" sheet is Linux's own there, the Diagnostics
test now stands in sys.platform as well, the proxy binding test is
pinned to Windows with a Linux case of its own, and an explicit empty
home no longer falls through to the account database.
- proxy: gsettings and setpriv are looked up in the fixed directories
the child gets, never in this process's PATH (setpriv runs as root
under sudo). An empty variable such as `http_proxy=` unsets it, as an
empty value does on Windows.
- adapters: a resolver file that cannot be read costs the DNS servers
only, not the list; each adapter's addresses and default routes are
found in one pass over each table instead of one per adapter.
- Linux capture smoke: the Adapters judge compares each adapter's index,
and the machine's own addresses and MAC never reach the output - the
namespace keeps its details, the machine's adapters are counted.

On Linux the Tools tab's Adapters said it works on Windows only, and the Diagnostics boxes Add network adapters and Add proxy settings were greyed out. Both now read Linux's own sources and fill the same rows as on Windows. Windows keeps every row, text and key it had.
