A 960 px window, Tools lists sized by their columns' words, and the Linux small texts - #296
1. A 960 px window, and Tools lists sized by the words they show (ca7c6e2)
Measured on real Tk, Windows and Linux (WSL, Noto Sans and DejaVu Sans): at the old
760 px window the TCP health list wanted 699 to 716 px of a 691 px table, so its last
column ("Resent") was cut off in every language. Words were cut too: the Polish
"not measured yet" in the RTT column and "needs administrator" in the state column,
and on Linux the Polish "proxy settings" and "lower layer down" in Adapters. Six columns with whole
words need 858 px, which no 760 px layout holds.
scaling.FIRST_RUN is 960 x 920 (the minimum follows it, as before). 960 still fits
a 1366 px screen at 125 %.
A geometry saved narrower by an older version is grown here and kept on its monitor
(scaling.grown_to, restored_geometry). Tk grows it by itself, but to the right,
past the monitor's edge.
widgets.make_room(table, words): a list column is at least as wide as the widest
text it can show, measured in the rows' own font plus a measured cell padding
(scaling.CELL_PAD). TCP health and Adapters declare the words from the nettools
tables (adapters.vocabulary, proxy.STATES, tcphealth.STATE_VOCABULARY), so a
new state or a new translation gets its room.
A table's empty note wraps inside the table. It is placed at its own width, and the
Polish TCP health note (907 px in 904 on Linux) was cut on both sides.
tools/ci_gui_render.py now fails a table without a sideways scrollbar whose
columns run past its edge, and a placed widget that runs past its parent, on every
surface and in every language. Each check first proves on cases made to fail that it
can tell. On the old layout it reports the TCP health list in Polish and English,
and the empty note in Polish.
2. Linux texts, and a CLI command Linux can run (be3e062)
Sockets: the note on sockets without a program says that Linux names it only to
root. Under sudo it says the rest are held from outside the system, as by another
WSL distribution or a container (measured: 14 of 14 without a program as a user on
Ubuntu 26.04, none as root; 4 under root in WSL, for which ss names no process
either).
The process example is chrome in the field hint, the "?" sheet and --help. It
is a bare name, so it finds Chrome as Windows and as Linux name it. chrome.exe found
nothing on Linux.
The shared "not available" words and --doctor on other systems name Windows and
Linux. TCP health on a Linux kernel without the socket list says so
(tcpestats.why_not).
The target field's tip no longer says it requires psutil.
Copy CLI command and the repro report on Linux. Ubuntu 26.04 has no python,
only python3, so the copied python bean_network_tester.py ... ended in "command
not found". A capture also needs root, and pydivert lives in the virtual
environment. The command is now sudo <venv python> -B bean_network_tester.py ...,
without sudo and -B for --simulate. The interpreter is named relative to the
checkout, from ~, or as python3, never by a path from the machine. Both
generated commands, pasted into a shell on an Ubuntu 26.04 machine, exit 0 as a
user and under sudo. Windows is unchanged.
3. Quoting for bash, closing sockets, an unplugged monitor, and the mutation runner (2d323b2)
Copy CLI command on Linux puts its values in single quotes (shlex.quote);
Windows keeps the cmd.exe and PowerShell quoting. Inside double quotes bash still
expands $( ), $NAME and a backtick, and at a prompt, where history expansion is
on, the ! of chrome,!chromedriver refused the line ("event not found") or
recalled an earlier command. A bare backslash was dropped too: re:\d+ arrived as re:d+. Measured in bash in WSL: 9 of 16 values arrived changed before, none after.
A Linux-only test pastes the command into real bash with history expansion on.
Sockets: psutil gives a socket in TIME_WAIT no PID, even to root, so the note
counted it as another account's, or under sudo as held from outside the system. It
is now PID 0, as on the native path and as the help already said. A connection its
program has closed in another closing state cannot be told apart, so both Linux notes
say that a closing connection may have no program.
A narrow window saved on a monitor that has since been unplugged was grown onto the
edge of the remaining one and kept there. The saved geometry is now checked before
it grows, so the window opens in the centre, as the README says.
tools/mutate.py fails a run with any BROKEN entry other than the canary. A --changed run reported "BROKEN: 1" and passed: one new entry was indented four
spaces too deep, and is fixed. A registry test now compiles every mutated file, so
this shows up before CI.
Checked
Lint (ruff, mypy) on every changed file.
Every new test was shown failing on the old code: the grown geometry (pure and
wiring), make_room and both panels' words, the empty note wrap, the render-check
wiring, the Sockets note per system, TCP health's own words on Linux, --doctor off
Windows and Linux, the chrome example, and the Linux command.
The edited test files and the hand-picked guards pass on Windows and on Linux (WSL).
The real-Tk render check passes in WSL in Polish, English and Chinese. On the old
product it reports the cut table.
The GUI smoke check passes.
Real-Tk shots of every surface at 960 px were taken on Windows and Linux.
The mutation registry anchors were checked. The mutations themselves run on CI.
FILE_CEILING is 1086 -> 1083, because app.py shrank and the ratchet asked for it.
Commit 3: every new test fails on the old code (the bash test in WSL, the rest on
Windows), and the edited test files pass on Windows and in WSL.
Not run locally: the full suite and mutate.py (CI).
- The window opens 960 px wide at 100 % (760 before) and is never made
narrower. At 760 the TCP health list wanted 699 to 716 px of a 691 px
table, measured on real Tk on Windows and Linux, so its last column was
cut in every language. A geometry saved narrower is grown here and kept
on its monitor (scaling.grown_to, restored_geometry): Tk grows it to the
right, past the edge.
- widgets.make_room: a list column is at least as wide as the widest word
it can show (states, types, "not measured yet"), in the rows' own font
plus a measured cell padding. TCP health and Adapters declare the
words from the nettools tables, so a new state or translation gets room.
- A table's empty note wraps inside it: placed at its own width, the Polish
TCP health note was cut by the frame on both sides on Linux.
- tools/ci_gui_render.py measures every table without a sideways scrollbar
on every surface and fails one whose columns run past its edge, and every
placed widget past its parent, after proving on cases made to fail that
it can tell. On the old layout it
reports the TCP health list in Polish and English.

Walkthrough
This pull request updates GUI sizing and saved-window restoration, adds checks for GUI content overflow, and extends Linux-specific capability messages and reproduction-command generation. It also updates process-name examples, localized text, tests, and documentation.
Changes: GUI layout and overflow checks
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Window sizing and restoration beantester/gui/app.py, beantester/gui/scaling.py, tests/test_gui_helpers.py, tests/test_gui_layout.py, CHANGELOG.md
The first-run window width increases to 960 pixels. Saved windows are grown to the minimum size and kept within their monitor when possible.
Treeview columns use declared localized text to determine whether they need more width. Empty-table notes are centered and wrap at 90% of the tree width.
GUI overflow detection and validation tools/ci_gui_render.py, tests/test_gui_layout.py, tests/test_mutation_registry.py
The render check detects overflow in non-scrollable tables and placed widgets. It includes those findings in its pass/fail result.

Linux capability and process reporting beantester/capabilities.py, beantester/capture_backend.py, beantester/driver.py, beantester/nettools/sockets.py, beantester/tcpestats.py, beantester/gui/toolbox/sockets.py, beantester/cli.py, lang/*.json, tests/test_capabilities.py, tests/test_nettools_sockets.py, tests/test_matchers.py
Capability text identifies Windows and Linux. Socket-owner notes vary by platform and root status, and Linux TCP health has a module-specific unavailable reason. Process examples use chrome without .exe.
Linux command generation selects an interpreter path and adds sudo and -B for normal runs. Simulations omit both. Reproduction commands and the missing-Tk suggestion use the simulation setting.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
PASS. The PR changes runtime behavior outside pure UI layout, and the changed tests cover it. tests/test_summary_repro_views.py covers linux_command, command_name, simulation versus capture, interpreter paths, quoting, and repro commands. tests/test_nettools_sockets.py covers platform- and privilege-specific owner notes. tests/test_capabilities.py covers Linux TCP-health capability wording, and tests/test_capture_backend.py covers the updated doctor text. tests/test_matchers.py covers the updated process examples and localized help. No test function was deleted, skipped, or weakened without justification. Geometry assertions were updated for the new window size, and new geometry and layout tests were added.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
PASS: The PR changes Tkinter GUI code, but it does not add hardcoded per-control styling. New sizing uses shared FIRST_RUN, CHARS, CELL_PAD, and NOTE_SHARE values. make_room measures text with the Treeview font and applies dynamic column widths through the reusable SortableTree component. The only new label option is shared alignment/wrapping behavior, and no new literal colors, fonts, font sizes, margins, paddings, or corner radii appear on individual controls.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No clear performance problem is introduced. The new make_room work runs when the two panels are constructed and measures small, fixed vocabularies (7/10 adapter entries, 3 proxy states, and 8 TCP states). It does not process table rows or add Treeview items. The existing virtualized table remains in use. The render-check additions perform bounded widget-tree scans in the CI tool, not application polling or blocking I/O. No changed timer or refresh path performs heavier or more frequent data polling.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
No custom-check failure is introduced. The PR changes GUI sizing, geometry validation, localized table sizing, and Linux wording/command generation. It adds no asset loading, file writes, date/culture parsing, background operation, destructive action, or network call. The Linux command uses sudo only for real capture commands, while --simulate explicitly omits sudo; the repository documents that capture requires root or equivalent capabilities. Saved geometry remains a validated in-memory transformation, and existing persistence writers are unchanged.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
No unsafe runtime file parsing was introduced. The changed production code only builds quoted Linux command paths and sizes GUI content. Translation files remain loaded through the existing beantester.i18n.load_languages() path, which calls beantester.jsonfile.load_json() with a 4 MiB limit, rejects non-JSON constants, and converts deep nesting and memory failures to ValueError. The added json.load() calls are test-only reads of fixed repository translation files; they do not process user-controlled files or deserialize executable types.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The PR does not add or change code that modifies system state. Production changes cover GUI sizing, localized text, diagnostics, and CLI command-string generation. linux_command() only returns a string containing sudo; it does not execute commands or alter network filters, proxies, firewalls, drivers, services, registry, process hooks, or system time. Existing capture behavior is unchanged.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
PASS. The PR changes user-facing examples, Linux capability notes, socket notes, and CLI guidance. The process example is consistently chrome across the CLI and all three locales. Linux-specific root/sudo wording is separate from Windows administrator wording. No new controls, vague button labels, Yes/No confirmations, or raw-exception messages were introduced. The TCP health text states the cause, and it is shown by the existing non-error unavailable-tool panel.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
No resource leak is introduced. The changed runtime code adds no new timers, subscriptions, threads, processes, files, sockets, queues, or native allocations. make_room() creates only a local Tk font for measurement; it stores no reference and is called only while constructing the Adapters and TCP health panels. The new render-check Toplevel objects use finally: window.destroy(), and the root teardown cancels pending after() callbacks before root.destroy(). The remaining changes are geometry, text, and sizing logic.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The changed-file diff is coherent with the title and description. The GUI changes cover the 960 px first-run width, saved-geometry migration, table vocabulary sizing, empty-note wrapping, and related render checks. The Linux changes cover localized platform text, socket and TCP-health explanations, process-name examples, and copyable capture/simulation commands. README.md and CHANGELOG.md document the user-visible behavior, and the language files update the displayed text. The new helpers use the existing scaling, SortableTree, nettools, paths, and i18n layers; no duplicate pre-existing helper was found. command_name(simulate=False) preserves existing callers, CLI arguments and persisted geometry format remain compatible, and older saved geometries have a fallback/growth path. No unrelated significant change or undocumented breaking API/config/data-format change is evident.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
The diff adds hardcoded absolute local paths and a user-like name in tests/test_summary_repro_views.py. Lines 146 and 149–160 use /u/ana/..., /opt/py/..., /srv, and /x/...; /u/ana also embeds the user name ana. These fixtures match the custom check's forbidden local-path and user-name conditions. The added print(...) calls in tools/ci_gui_render.py are intentional render-check reporting, not leftover debug output. No credentials, private URLs, emails, or agent files were found.
Resolution
Replace the committed /u/ana, /opt/py, /srv, and /x literals with paths created at test runtime, such as pytest tmp_path/pathlib fixtures. Keep the same inside-checkout, home, outside-checkout, quoting, and missing-home assertions without embedding a user name or machine-specific absolute path.

before calling grown_to, so a position on a detached monitor uses the centered
fallback instead of being moved onto the primary monitor. Add a restoration test
for a detached-monitor position and verify it returns to the current screen’s
center.
Review comments at @beantester/repro.py:
- Line 159: Update the reproduction-command argument quoting so Linux commands
use POSIX-compatible quoting that prevents shell expansion, while Windows
commands continue using _quote(). Apply this in the command construction that
calls command_name(simulate).
Review comments at @lang/en.json:
- Around line 1037-1038: Update the `tools.sockets.note_no_pid_linux` and
`tools.sockets.note_no_pid_root` messages in English, Polish, and Chinese to
avoid claiming that every socket without a PID belongs to another account or an
external system. Distinguish sockets with unknown ownership from known
permission restrictions: say that `sudo` may reveal more owners and that some
sockets have no current owner.
Review comments at @tests/test_mutation_registry.py:
- Line 9795: Update the column-sizing mutation replacement so its if False
statement uses eight leading spaces, keeping the mutated code syntactically
valid and allowing the named test to reach its make_room assertions.

## Conventions (enforced by tests)
- Code, comments and docstrings are in **English**, and so are commit messages and pull
request descriptions. This repository is public and its history is permanent: a comment or
a message cannot be unpublished, because the commit carrying it stays. Keep local paths,
machine names, addresses and credentials out of all of them. Quote the program - interface
text, command output, code - and not a person: a sentence from a chat or an issue is
somebody else's words. CI checks the mechanical half of this on every pull request.

## Where this project's bugs actually come from
1. 🔴 **A guard that cannot fail.** The single most valuable finding available in this
repository, and no linter can see it. An assertion that would also pass over an empty
set, a collector that returns nothing, a walk rooted at a directory that does not exist
on a runner, a search pattern that quietly stops matching - each looks like coverage and
is coverage of nothing. **A new test that would still pass with the behaviour removed is
a finding.** Ask of every added assertion: what input makes this red?

## Conventions (enforced by tests)
- **New functionality is merged with the test that guards it.** That is the policy, and the
two bullets above are what it looks like in practice. It is not left to good intentions:
`tests/test_mutation_registry.py` records which broken behaviour each test is supposed to
catch, and CI re-breaks them to prove the test actually reddens.

Use POSIX quoting for Linux reproduction commands.
The new Linux launcher now sends its arguments through _quote(), which is designed for cmd.exe and PowerShell. Double quotes do not prevent Bash command substitution, so an argument containing $(...) can execute during paste. In an interactive Bash shell, !chromedriver can also trigger history expansion.
Use shlex.quote for Linux commands and keep _quote() for Windows commands.

Review comment at @beantester/repro.py at line 159:
Update the reproduction-command argument quoting so Linux commands use
POSIX-compatible quoting that prevents shell expansion, while Windows commands
continue using _quote(). Apply this in the command construction that calls
command_name(simulate).
After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local
review. Visit https://docs.coderabbit.ai/cli?utm_source=ghpr
The command copied on Linux used the cmd.exe quoting. Inside double
quotes bash still expands $( ), $NAME and a backtick, and at a prompt
the `!` of `chrome,!chromedriver` refuses the line or recalls an
earlier command; a bare backslash was dropped (re:\d+ arrived as
re:d+).
- repro: quote with shlex.quote off Windows; _quote stays for cmd.exe
and PowerShell. A Linux-only test pastes the command into real bash
with history expansion on, and test_cli pins both platforms.
- portmap: a TCP socket in TIME_WAIT read through psutil gets PID 0, as
on the native path and in the help. Linux gives it no PID even to
root, so the Sockets note counted it as another account's, or as held
from outside the system. Both Linux note texts now say a closing
connection may have no program (en, pl, zh).
- scaling: restored_geometry judges the saved geometry before growing
it. Growing moves the corner onto the nearest monitor, so a narrow
window saved on an unplugged monitor was kept on the edge of the
primary one instead of being centred.
- mutate.py: any BROKEN entry other than the canary fails the run; a
--changed run passed with one. test_every_mutation_still_compiles
compiles every mutated file in the suite. The entry whose replacement
was indented four spaces too deep is fixed.
- Registry: 5 new entries, 2 moved anchors. CHANGELOG and README.

What and why
Three commits.
1. A 960 px window, and Tools lists sized by the words they show (
ca7c6e2)Measured on real Tk, Windows and Linux (WSL, Noto Sans and DejaVu Sans): at the old
760 px window the TCP health list wanted 699 to 716 px of a 691 px table, so its last
column ("Resent") was cut off in every language. Words were cut too: the Polish
"not measured yet" in the RTT column and "needs administrator" in the state column,
and on Linux the Polish "proxy settings" and "lower layer down" in Adapters. Six columns with whole
words need 858 px, which no 760 px layout holds.
scaling.FIRST_RUNis 960 x 920 (the minimum follows it, as before). 960 still fitsa 1366 px screen at 125 %.
(
scaling.grown_to,restored_geometry). Tk grows it by itself, but to the right, past the monitor's edge.
widgets.make_room(table, words): a list column is at least as wide as the widesttext it can show, measured in the rows' own font plus a measured cell padding
(
scaling.CELL_PAD). TCP health and Adapters declare the words from the nettoolstables (
adapters.vocabulary,proxy.STATES,tcphealth.STATE_VOCABULARY), so anew state or a new translation gets its room.
Polish TCP health note (907 px in 904 on Linux) was cut on both sides.
tools/ci_gui_render.pynow fails a table without a sideways scrollbar whosecolumns run past its edge, and a placed widget that runs past its parent, on every
surface and in every language. Each check first proves on cases made to fail that it
can tell. On the old layout it reports the TCP health list in Polish and English,
and the empty note in Polish.
2. Linux texts, and a CLI command Linux can run (
be3e062)root. Under sudo it says the rest are held from outside the system, as by another
WSL distribution or a container (measured: 14 of 14 without a program as a user on
Ubuntu 26.04, none as root; 4 under root in WSL, for which
ssnames no processeither).
chromein the field hint, the "?" sheet and--help. Itis a bare name, so it finds Chrome as Windows and as Linux name it.
chrome.exefoundnothing on Linux.
--doctoron other systems name Windows andLinux. TCP health on a Linux kernel without the socket list says so
(
tcpestats.why_not).python,only
python3, so the copiedpython bean_network_tester.py ...ended in "commandnot found". A capture also needs root, and pydivert lives in the virtual
environment. The command is now
sudo <venv python> -B bean_network_tester.py ...,without
sudoand-Bfor--simulate. The interpreter is named relative to thecheckout, from
~, or aspython3, never by a path from the machine. Bothgenerated commands, pasted into a shell on an Ubuntu 26.04 machine, exit 0 as a
user and under sudo. Windows is unchanged.
3. Quoting for bash, closing sockets, an unplugged monitor, and the mutation runner (
2d323b2)shlex.quote);Windows keeps the cmd.exe and PowerShell quoting. Inside double quotes bash still
expands
$( ),$NAMEand a backtick, and at a prompt, where history expansion ison, the
!ofchrome,!chromedriverrefused the line ("event not found") orrecalled an earlier command. A bare backslash was dropped too:
re:\d+arrived asre:d+. Measured in bash in WSL: 9 of 16 values arrived changed before, none after.A Linux-only test pastes the command into real bash with history expansion on.
counted it as another account's, or under sudo as held from outside the system. It
is now PID 0, as on the native path and as the help already said. A connection its
program has closed in another closing state cannot be told apart, so both Linux notes
say that a closing connection may have no program.
edge of the remaining one and kept there. The saved geometry is now checked before
it grows, so the window opens in the centre, as the README says.
tools/mutate.pyfails a run with any BROKEN entry other than the canary. A--changedrun reported "BROKEN: 1" and passed: one new entry was indented fourspaces too deep, and is fixed. A registry test now compiles every mutated file, so
this shows up before CI.
