What changes for a person

bws show prints one line per trigger with what it waits for, and each data item on a line under it:

  Triggers Firewall port/Start Port opened
                         500, UDP, %windir%\system32\svchost.exe, IKEEXT
                       Device arrival/Start 4d1e55b2-f16f-11cf-88cb-001111000030
                         HID_DEVICE_UP:000D_U:0001
                         HID_DEVICE_UP:000D_U:0002
                       System state/Start 2d7a2816-0c5e-45fc-9ce7-570e5ecde9c9
                         75 18 bc a3 28 00 92 13

The ten subtypes the SERVICE_TRIGGER documentation names are words (only under the kind the documentation gives them), any other subtype is its GUID, and bytes read in pairs as sc qtriggerinfo prints them.

bws snapshot diff and the window's comparison table show a change of triggers as one line or row per trigger that only one side holds, with "nothing" on the other side:

  IKEEXT ...
triggers: Firewall port/Start Port opened 500, UDP, %windir%\system32\svchost.exe, IKEEXT -> nothing
triggers: nothing -> Firewall port/Start Port opened 501, UDP, %windir%\system32\svchost.exe, IKEEXT

Before this, the same change was the two whole lists as JSON, about 3000 characters on one line for an entry losing one of thirteen triggers. --json is unchanged: before and after still carry both whole lists, and no new key is written.

The details panel has a Triggers section after the fields, one full-width line per trigger, and a copy of the entry carries it. The Triggers line among the advanced fields still says the column's words (the kinds, once each).

A damaged trigger block (too short for its header, a record pointer to nowhere, or more records counted than the block holds) is refused with ERROR_INVALID_DATA, like a data item outside the block since schema seven, instead of reading as no triggers or as the records that fitted.

How it is built

  • Core: TriggerDocument.Of(ServiceTrigger) (moved out of EntryDocument), TriggerParts (named subtype, values as text, type word), TriggerChange on FieldDifference.Triggers - a multiset of the triggers on one side only, keyed by the same text the comparison sorts. DiffJson maps its fields one by one, so the new property does not reach the machine document.
  • Command line: TriggerWords.Lines / Line. EntryReport splits only a field marked as lines of its own making - a line break inside any value from outside is still written out as <U+000A> (stability report C-4). The first version split every value and TerminalTextTests caught it.
  • Window: TriggerLines escapes every piece from a file through Printable, because the window's texts do not escape. DiffLines makes a row per trigger. In DetailsView.xaml a prose line's label now spans the row: measured on a real panel, a trigger label had widened the shared label column of the whole panel by 7 device pixels.
  • ReadTriggerBuffer: one count, checked once with Within for the whole record array and walked once.

Checked

  • Narrow test runs: core 218, command line 110, window 232 + 4, architecture 214, integration SnapshotContractTests and TriggerContractTests 17.
  • Mutation registry: 16 new or re-anchored entries, all caught, including the layout guard on the details panel. stale-check clean.
  • On a real machine: the trigger oracle against sc qtriggerinfo still agrees on all 260 triggers of 804 entries after the block change, and bws show and bws snapshot diff print the lines above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Trigger details are now shown in the application’s details panel and CLI reports, with readable names and formatted data.
    • Trigger changes are displayed individually in terminal and comparison-table output, making additions and removals easier to identify.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Malformed trigger data is reported as unreadable instead of appearing as empty or incomplete.

Since snapshot schema seven a trigger's subtype and data were kept in the
snapshot and in --json, but a person still saw only kinds and actions.

bws show now prints one line per trigger with its subtype, and each data
item on a line under it, aligned under the value column. The ten
subtypes the SERVICE_TRIGGER documentation names are shown as words,
only under the kind the documentation gives them, and every other one as
its GUID. Bytes read in pairs as sc qtriggerinfo prints them. Only the
triggers are split into lines: a line break inside any value from
outside is still written out, so it cannot print a line that looks like
a field of the report.

A comparison shows a change of triggers as one line per trigger that
only one side holds, with "nothing" on the other side, in the terminal
and as rows of the window's table. The triggers on one side only are
counted as a multiset and never paired. The machine document is
unchanged: before and after still carry both whole lists.

The window's details panel has a Triggers section after the fields, one
full-width line per trigger, and a copy of the entry carries it. A
prose line's label now spans the row, so a long trigger label no longer
widens the label column of the whole panel.

A trigger block too short for its header, pointing nowhere, or counting
more records than it holds is now refused with ERROR_INVALID_DATA like a
data item outside the block, instead of reading as no triggers or as the
records that fitted.

Walkthrough

The change adds detailed trigger formatting to CLI reports and the GUI, renders trigger additions and removals as separate comparison rows, and refuses malformed Windows trigger buffers instead of returning empty or partial lists.

Changes: Trigger details and comparison

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

Tests cover the changed runtime behavior. Core tests cover malformed trigger blocks, trigger multiset comparison, subtype mapping, byte/value formatting, and unknown data types. CLI tests cover per-trigger and multiline output, hostile text, and unchanged JSON fields. GUI tests cover per-trigger diff rows, trigger details, copy behavior, and full-width layout. The diff shows no deleted test files, skipped tests, or weakened assertions; the changed malformed-block assertions are stronger and check Denied with error code 13.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers

Explanation

No prohibited files or leftovers were introduced. The changed-file inventory contains only source, resource, and test files; it adds no CLAUDE.md, CLAUDE.local.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env path. Added-line scans found no credentials, tokens, API keys, private URLs, personal emails, internal hostnames/IPs, or listed debug calls. The only Windows absolute path (C:\Vendor\) already exists in the base revision and is not introduced by this pull request.

Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling

Explanation

PASS. The GUI changes use existing shared resources such as MarginDetailLine, MarginBetweenControls, and DetailLabelText/DetailValueText. The only new XAML geometry is Grid.ColumnSpan="3" for the existing detail template. No literal colors, fonts, sizes, margins, padding, or corner radii were added, and no duplicated controls were introduced.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

No Desktop robustness condition is introduced. The changed code formats trigger data in memory (TriggerParts, TriggerLines, TriggerWords) and adds GUI detail rows. It does not add working-directory asset loads, file writes, settings persistence, background tasks, destructive actions, elevation, or network calls. New trigger parsing uses invariant GUID formatting and enum parsing, not culture-sensitive numbers or dates. Snapshot reads already use SnapshotJson.TryRead, which catches JSON errors, and ReadTriggerBuffer validates malformed buffers before reading.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

PASS: The pull request does not modify system state. The changed code reads and validates service trigger data, maps trigger documents, and renders CLI/GUI output. The diff adds no network, proxy, firewall, service, registry, driver, process-hooking, injection, or system-time mutation calls. The firewall references are trigger-kind names and display logic only, so the reversibility warning is not applicable.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

No resource leak is introduced. The changed production code adds only transient trigger lists, records, strings, and GUI view-model sections. SnapshotDiff.Values.cs:121-138 builds bounded per-comparison lists, and Details.cs:252-258 creates the current trigger section without storing a history or queue. TriggerParts.cs:57-69 contains a fixed ten-entry lookup table. ReadTriggerBuffer pins the input only inside the fixed scope (ManagerBlocks.Triggers.cs:72-105); all returns release that pin automatically. The diff adds no event subscription, timer, stream, process, native handle, task, image, cache, or unbounded collection.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

The change is scoped to the stated trigger display and damaged-block fix. The title and description cover CLI output, GUI details and diff rows, trigger formatting helpers, refusal behavior, JSON compatibility, and the added public helpers. CHANGELOG.md documents the user-visible behavior and refusal behavior. The implementation reuses TriggerDocument and shared TriggerParts; GUI and CLI formatters remain separate only for their existing localization layers, and GUI details use the existing view-model path. Public changes are additive: TriggerDocument.Of, TriggerParts, TriggerChange, and FieldDifference.Triggers; the existing positional constructor and JSON mapping remain unchanged.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

The new trigger comparison has clear O(n²) processing. SnapshotDiff.Values.Change scans added with FindIndex for every trigger and then calls RemoveAt, which also shifts the remaining list (src/Bws.Core/Snapshots/SnapshotDiff.Values.cs:121-138). Trigger counts are read from a native uint cTriggers and snapshots expose an unbounded IReadOnlyList<TriggerDocument>; the code has no small-list limit. Large trigger lists can therefore make snapshot comparison and its CLI/GUI consumers slow.

Resolution

Replace the repeated FindIndex/RemoveAt matching with an O(n) multiset match. Build a dictionary from each trigger key to a queue of indexes in the later list, consume one index for each earlier trigger, record removed triggers, then emit unconsumed later indexes in original order as added triggers. Add a test with large lists and duplicates to verify linear behavior and ordering.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

The new JSON-trigger comparison path can fail on malformed snapshot data and can hang on large trigger arrays. SnapshotDiff.Values.Listed calls SnapshotJson.Trigger, which uses JsonNode.Deserialize<TriggerDocument>(Shape). Schema versions below 7 do not validate trigger data items in Snapshot.BrokenEntries; a legacy trigger containing "data":[null] can therefore reach TriggerWords.Items or TriggerLines.Items, which call TriggerParts.TypeOf(null) and throw ArgumentNullException. The new Change method also uses List.FindIndex plus List.RemoveAt for multiset matching, which is quadratic and is attacker-controlled up to the existing 64 MB snapshot limit. The fixed TriggerDocument target has no arbitrary-type or code-execution risk, and the native buffer bounds checks are improved, but the malformed/huge-input conditions are introduced by this PR.

Resolution

Validate every trigger, data item, type, and value in Snapshot.BrokenEntries for every supported schema before comparison, and return a normal unreadable-file result instead of passing malformed nodes to TriggerParts.TypeOf. Replace FindIndex/RemoveAt in SnapshotDiff.Change with a dictionary-based multiset matcher, or enforce a strict trigger-count limit before processing. Add tests for malformed legacy trigger data and large trigger arrays. Keep JsonNode.Deserialize<TriggerDocument>(Shape) restricted to the concrete TriggerDocument type; do not add polymorphic or arbitrary-type deserialization.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The PR makes malformed trigger blocks surface as user-facing read errors, but the messages do not tell the user what failed or what to do. ReadTriggerBuffer now returns Denied with error 13 for damaged blocks; CLI renders only “(could not be read, code 13)” and the GUI renders only “could not be read”. The GUI also omits the trigger section, with no refresh instruction for this initial read failure. New unknown-kind text is inconsistent: CLI uses “Unknown”, while GUI uses “unknown”.

Resolution

Add trigger-specific messages. For CLI, use text such as “(invalid trigger data; run bws show again after correcting the service configuration, code {0})”. For the GUI, use “Could not read the trigger data because it is invalid. Press F5 to read the service again.” Apply the same capitalization for the unknown trigger kind in both CLI and GUI resources.

216-232: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality

The concern does not hold. The repository contains only English language files for the CLI and GUI, and both already carry the new trigger keys, so no shipped language file is missing them.

Move the trigger-item separator into the language files.

The repository rule applies to this separator. CellFaces.cs already localizes comparable list separators, and both trigger surfaces still pass the literal " | " to string.Join.

Review comment at @src/Bws.Gui/ViewModels/TriggerLines.cs at line 26:
Update the trigger-item formatting in the GUI and CLI paths to retrieve the
separator through their localization resources instead of passing the literal
separator to string.Join. Add the corresponding localized separator entries for
both surfaces, while preserving the existing Head(trigger) behavior when items
is empty.

… hand-edited trigger

Match the triggers each side holds alone by counting copies instead of
searching the other list for every trigger. The search was quadratic, and
a snapshot is a file anybody can hand over: with 40000 triggers in one
entry, five runs after a first one not counted, a comparison took 12.8 to
20.4 s and now takes 1.78 to 1.82 s. The copies matched are still the first
ones on the later side, so the lines come out in the same order.

Give no trigger lines when either side holds a trigger that is not one to
say - null as a whole, or a data item without its type or its values. The
comparison then shows the two whole lists, as it did before. A null
trigger used to come out as a line reading "/", and a data item of nulls
in a schema 6 file - which is not asked for whole data when read - ended
`bws snapshot diff` with an exception and code 1. Narrowing to kind and
action now keeps a null trigger null. One rule for a whole data item,
TriggerDataDocument.IsWhole, serves both the schema 7 reader and the
comparison.

Put a trigger value in quotation marks, its own doubled, when it is empty,
holds a comma, a bar or a quotation mark, or starts or ends in white
space. A firewall rule's program path may hold a comma, and one such value
read exactly like two, so a real change printed two identical lines.
Bytes are shown in pairs only for an even run of hex digits. Every trigger
line on the machine this was measured on reads as before.

Join the data items of one trigger in one place, TriggerParts.OneLine,
beside the rule that quotes, instead of in both interfaces.

Fix two stacked doc comments in tests, re-anchor two mutation entries and
add ten for the behaviours above.
