fix(core): a console program that ends at once ends its session, and Rust programs see the session zone - #146
Two defects found by running real applications under a session, fixed together, and the support matrix brought up to date.
1. A console program that ends at once no longer reads as a vanish (exit code 12). The guard window took every target that ended within 300 ms of its start for the second instance of a single-instance application handing its work to a copy already running. Console tools that had done their work with the session's date - a date printed, a commit made, a file written - were reported as "DID NOT TAKE EFFECT". The suspicion now needs a windowed program in the family:
the hook records the subsystem of its own image in its coverage slot (Cov.subsystem, where the slot's padding was, read by chrono_ctl::image_subsystem without allocating),
Session::family_only_console answers yes only when every slot is published and says console, and the registry is not full,
vanish_reason keeps the hand-off to an uncovered child first, then lets a console family end normally, then suspects.
A windowed program that ends at once is still exit code 12.
2. The session time zone reaches Rust programs.
The chrono crate reads the current zone only through GetTimeZoneInformationForYear(year, NULL), which was on the list of known gaps. It is now a zone channel (CHANNEL_COUNT 44 to 45, CTL_LAYOUT_VERSION 12 to 13) that answers with the session zone for the current zone and for the zone named "Chrono Session" (the original returned FALSE on that name), and passes every other named zone through.
The jiff crate maps the zone's key name through the CLDR table and reads nothing else, so it fell back to UTC. TZ is the one thing it reads first, so the core gives it the session zone there (CMS-5:30 for +05:30) when the target carries jiff's source path in .rdata (pe::links_jiff). Only for such a target: Node.js reads TZ too and turns the POSIX form into an unknown zone at +00:00. The three-letter name is what the C runtime parses (the <+0530> form leaves it at a nonsense offset).
3. The support matrix says what is measured, and by what. The header named an older run and only two hand-measured rows. The embedded-engine row is measured by the release stand on hosts of our own, Python's clock and zone by the runtime maps. Rows the runtime maps have measured all along are added: JavaScript runtimes, Ruby, Rust, and Go (not supported - its wall clock is out of reach, and the report says so). The batch row now says the window takes a shortcut too. Two honest limits are added: the 300 ms guard window, and a TZ variable of the tester's own, which the C runtime and Node.js read before the session zone (measured, not yet reported by the audit).
The link preview picture says 45 time channels (guarded by the site build test). The PNG in the repository settings is uploaded by hand.
How it was checked
New crates/cli/tests/quick_exit.rs: the command interpreter ending at once gets exit 0 and a family verdict, rundll32.exe with nothing to run gets exit 12.
crates/cli/tests/session_zone.rs: the zone of a year under a session, asked by none and by the session's name, and a test binary carrying jiff's source path gets TZ=CMS-5:30 while a PowerShell probe under the same kind of session keeps its own.
hook_integrity.rs calls the new detour at an odd address.
Unit tests for the header reader, the console-family rule, the vanish order, the jiff fingerprint (including a path across a read window) and the POSIX offset.
Seven revert probes measured by hand, each red in its own test, and thirteen entries added to tests/mutation/entries.json.
Measured on release builds, x64 and x86: a program on the chrono crate shows 03:14:07+05:30 and 03:14:07-07:00 with exit 0 (before: this machine's zone and exit 12). Instant stays real at x60 unless --scale-qpc. A jiff program prints +0530 CMS.
Local gates: clippy, clippy-pin, both builds, deny, the matrix check 30/30. Full test runs are left to CI.
Notes
CTL_LAYOUT_VERSION moves to 13, so a hook and a core from different builds refuse each other, as before.
A jiff program started by another program of the session is not recognised and still shows UTC. A windowed program that ends at once on purpose is still suspected.
Review round
Two findings from the review, both confirmed in the code and fixed.
The guard window kept the children it named to itself. It asks the hook's ring which children ran uncovered, and the ring names each child once. Before this pull request every exit inside the window ended the session, so that did not matter. A console family that ended there now goes on to its report, and the report counted such a child and named none. The session ledger is now made before the guard check and takes the children the window named, and run_session drives that ledger. A new test in quick_exit.rs starts the 32-bit command interpreter from the 64-bit one, both end at once, and the report has to name as many children as it counts (red before the fix: 0 named of 1).
The jiff fingerprint took paths that only look like jiff's.notjiff-0.2.37\src\lib.rs and jiff-0.2.37\srcdoc both answered yes. The byte in front of jiff- may no longer carry a crate name on (a letter, a digit, - or _), and src has to be a directory. Each read window after the first starts one byte early, so a path at its first byte is judged by the byte in front of it. Rust keeps its strings back to back, so a build that trims its paths starts one right behind the previous string. Measured on jiff 0.2.37 built with its registry prefix remapped away: 8 of its 16 paths still qualify. In three untrimmed programs every path does (12 to 19 each).
The network guard's reason for quick_exit.rs now says it runs the binary three times.
Mutation registry: rust-zone e and f re-anchored to the new code, rust-zone h to k and quick-exit g added. All 18 entries of this pull request caught locally.
The red Gates on c1f8fb0 was the network guard alone: quick_exit.rs had no entry in its register (fixed in 342d5ad). That failure stopped the test run, so this push is the first CI run of quick_exit and session_zone.
Local: clippy, clippy-pin, both builds, and the hygiene, network, names, shape, quick_exit and session_zone tests plus the CLI unit tests. Full runs are left to CI.
Quick-exiting console sessions now finish with a verdict and the application’s exit code. Quick-exiting windowed processes continue to be reported as suspected hand-offs with exit code 12.
Rust programs using chrono or detected jiff builds now receive the session time zone through supported mechanisms. An existing TZ value can still override the session zone for C-runtime-based programs.
Documentation
Updated the support matrix with additional runtimes, measurement sources, and shortcut support, plus limits for user-defined TZ values, command length, and fast-exiting windowed programs.
…Rust programs see the session zone
The guard window read every target that ended within 300 ms as a single-instance
hand-off, so console tools that had done their work with the session's date got
exit code 12. The hook now records its image's subsystem in its coverage slot
(Cov.subsystem, where the padding was), and the suspicion needs a windowed
program in the family. A hand-off to an uncovered child is still checked first.
The chrono crate reads the current zone only through
GetTimeZoneInformationForYear, now a zone channel that answers with the session
zone for the current zone and for the zone named "Chrono Session". The jiff
crate maps the zone's key name and falls back to UTC, so a target that carries
jiff's source path gets the session zone in TZ, in the three-letter POSIX form
the C runtime parses. No other target gets TZ, because Node.js breaks on it.
CHANNEL_COUNT 44 to 45 and CTL_LAYOUT_VERSION 12 to 13. The support matrix
names what measures each row, adds the runtimes the release tests already
measure (JavaScript, Ruby, Rust, Go) and two honest limits, and the link
preview picture says 45 channels. Thirteen mutation entries guard the change.

Walkthrough
The change distinguishes quick exits from console-only and windowed process families. It adds a year-based time-zone hook for Rust chrono and injects a POSIX session-zone TZ value for detected Rust jiff targets. The README and changelog describe these behaviors and update the runtime support matrix.
Changes: Quick-exit classification
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Record and classify process subsystems crates/ctl/src/lib.rs, crates/hook/src/lib.rs, crates/mech/src/lib.rs
The control block stores each process image subsystem. The hook records it, and the session checks whether all claimed process slots identify console programs.
The CLI avoids a vanish outcome for console-only families unless a live uncovered child indicates a hand-off. Windowed families retain single-instance suspicion. Tests cover immediate console and windowed exits.

Summary
Hook year-based zone queries crates/ctl/src/lib.rs, crates/hook/src/lib.rs, crates/cli/tests/hook_integrity.rs, crates/cli/tests/session_zone.rs, CHANGELOG.md
The hook intercepts GetTimeZoneInformationForYear and returns the session bias and name for current-zone and matching named-zone queries. Tests check the year-based and dynamic-zone results.
Detect jiff targets and set TZ crates/cli/src/pe.rs, crates/cli/src/zone.rs, crates/cli/src/core.rs, crates/cli/tests/session_zone.rs, tests/mutation/entries.json, README.md, CHANGELOG.md
The CLI searches a bounded .rdata region for a retained jiff source path. For detected targets, it formats the session bias as POSIX TZ and adds that value to the launch environment. Documentation also updates the runtime support matrix.

Explanation
The title clearly describes the two main behavior changes: quick-exiting console sessions now finish, and Rust programs receive the session time zone. It is specific, user-facing, and 103 characters long.
Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
PASS: The PR adds tests for each changed runtime behavior. quick_exit.rs covers console quick exit and windowed quick exit; core and mech unit tests cover vanish ordering and console-family classification; ctl and pe tests cover subsystem parsing and Jiff detection; zone tests cover POSIX TZ; hook_integrity.rs and session_zone.rs cover GetTimeZoneInformationForYear and Jiff TZ injection. The existing dynamic-zone assertions remain in the refactored session test. The ignored PowerShell probe is a deliberate helper target, not a skipped existing test, and the PR description explains its use.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
The pull request does not add or change XAML, Slint, Fyne, Tkinter, or WPF code-behind. The changed files are Rust code, tests, documentation, JSON, HTML text, and an SVG/image asset. The SVG change updates text from “44 time channels audited” to “45 time channels audited”; it does not add hardcoded control styling or copy-pasted controls.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No explicit performance failure is introduced. The new links_jiff check performs one bounded scan of the target image during startup, capped at 32 MiB in 1 MiB windows. The core runs as a separate __core process, not on a UI thread. Other new loops are bounded registry checks of at most 4096 slots, with no UI collections, per-item external calls, or excessive polling.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
No explicit desktop robustness failure is introduced. Production changes read the selected target executable, with bounded scanning and safe false/zero results for unreadable or malformed input. They add no working-directory asset loading, settings persistence, culture-sensitive parsing, long-running background work, destructive action, admin request, or network call. New file writes occur only in integration tests for temporary probe artifacts, not application settings or user data.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
No unsafe structured-file parsing was introduced. The new File::open/Read logic only fingerprints a target PE executable, and PeFile::from_reader plus read_at bounds headers and scans to 32 MiB in 1 MiB windows, returning false on malformed or unreadable input. The changed entries.json is static mutation metadata; no new deserializer or file exporter is added. No XML, YAML, CSV, XLSX, archive, translation, theme, or settings parser is introduced.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
No custom-check failure found. The PR adds clear explanatory documentation and CLI-reference text for quick exits, exit code 12, TZ, and the support matrix. The only new runtime diagnostic states what happened and why: the existing TZ value was replaced for a jiff target because it reads its zone from TZ. No new buttons or icon-only controls were added, and no raw exception or vague action label was introduced.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
No resource leak is introduced. links_jiff opens the target with RAII and bounds each scan to 32 MiB; its temporary buffers drop on return. family_only_console allocates at most MAX_COV_PIDS entries per call and drops the vector. The new time-zone hook stores only function pointers and stack data. No new timer, thread, subscription, queue, or native handle requires release. The added integration tests wait for child processes and remove their temporary files and directories on the normal path.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The PR scope matches the title and description: quick-exit classification, Rust time-zone handling, related tests, mutation cases, and support-matrix updates. All user-facing behavior changes are documented in README.md, CHANGELOG.md, and both CLI-reference pages; the 45-channel asset text is also updated. The added PE and subsystem helpers serve different layers and no duplicate implementation or architecture bypass is present. The control layout is an internal, non-published workspace contract (publish=false), and CTL_LAYOUT_VERSION 13 rejects incompatible old blocks with a clear fallback error.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
The diff adds hardcoded local absolute paths. crates/cli/src/pe.rs:890 contains C:\Users\b\..., which includes a user-specific path; added test fixtures also use C:\x\..., and crates/cli/tests/session_zone.rs:194 uses C:\cargo\.... No added credential or debug-output calls were found.
Resolution
Replace the added absolute path literals with relative or clearly synthetic path data. Remove the C:\Users\b fixture and avoid embedding local registry paths in JIFF_SOURCE_PATH; derive Windows system paths from SystemRoot without a hardcoded local fallback where possible.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The PR adds process hooking. crates/hook/src/lib.rs:3944-3945 installs the new detour, and core.rs:116 launches the selected target with session state. The hook saves original functions as MinHook trampolines, but normal stop only marks DETACHED (hook/src/lib.rs:461-489); detours then forward to the originals. The code does not disable or remove the hooks, and pin_self keeps the DLL loaded until process termination (hook/src/lib.rs:704-711). The only disable_all_hooks path is install-failure rollback (hook/src/lib.rs:4017), not session stop, application close handling, crash cleanup, or next-start cleanup. A target that outlives run_session can therefore retain injected code and patched API entry points after end, --ticks, timeout, EOF, or core failure. The registry policy has cleanup and the CLI exposes stop paths, but they do not restore the process-hook state.
Resolution
Add a coordinated teardown path for every injected process. Save each patched entry and restore it on normal session stop, target close, core crash, and before the next session starts. Disable and remove MinHook hooks, release the pinned DLL and mapped control state when safe, and make the watcher perform the same cleanup after detecting core death. Report any failed restoration as residue with a visible recovery action. Keep the teardown scoped to the selected process family.

116-116: 🎯 Functional Correctness
Inherited TZ entries are replaced.
environment_block merges launch.env with the inherited environment. merge_entries compares names case-insensitively and replaces the existing entry. The repository test covers this behavior with Path and path, so a second TZ entry is not produced.
The network guard asks every test that starts a process for an entry that
says why it stays on this machine. quick_exit.rs had none, and CI said so.
The session_zone entry now also names the test binary it runs as a target.

… it named, and the jiff fingerprint needs a whole path
- The guard window asks the hook's ring which children ran uncovered, and the ring names each
child once. A console family that ended there now goes on to its report, which counted such a
child and named none. The session ledger is made before the guard check and takes the children
the window named, and run_session drives that ledger. A new quick_exit test starts the 32-bit
command interpreter from the 64-bit one and checks that the report names as many children as it
counts (before the fix: 0 named of 1).
- The jiff fingerprint took a path such as notjiff-0.2.37/src or jiff-0.2.37/srcdoc. The byte in
front of jiff- may no longer carry a crate name on, and src has to be a directory. Each read
window after the first starts one byte early, so a path at its first byte is judged by the byte
in front of it. Measured on jiff 0.2.37 built with its registry prefix remapped away, 8 of its
16 paths still qualify, and every path of three untrimmed programs does.
- Mutation registry: rust-zone e and f re-anchored to the new code, rust-zone h to k and
quick-exit g added. All 18 entries of this pull request caught locally.

What this changes
Two defects found by running real applications under a session, fixed together, and the support matrix brought up to date.
1. A console program that ends at once no longer reads as a vanish (exit code 12). The guard window took every target that ended within 300 ms of its start for the second instance of a single-instance application handing its work to a copy already running. Console tools that had done their work with the session's date - a date printed, a commit made, a file written - were reported as "DID NOT TAKE EFFECT". The suspicion now needs a windowed program in the family:
Cov.subsystem, where the slot's padding was, read bychrono_ctl::image_subsystemwithout allocating),Session::family_only_consoleanswers yes only when every slot is published and says console, and the registry is not full,vanish_reasonkeeps the hand-off to an uncovered child first, then lets a console family end normally, then suspects.A windowed program that ends at once is still exit code 12.
2. The session time zone reaches Rust programs.
chronocrate reads the current zone only throughGetTimeZoneInformationForYear(year, NULL), which was on the list of known gaps. It is now a zone channel (CHANNEL_COUNT44 to 45,CTL_LAYOUT_VERSION12 to 13) that answers with the session zone for the current zone and for the zone named "Chrono Session" (the original returned FALSE on that name), and passes every other named zone through.jiffcrate maps the zone's key name through the CLDR table and reads nothing else, so it fell back to UTC.TZis the one thing it reads first, so the core gives it the session zone there (CMS-5:30for +05:30) when the target carries jiff's source path in.rdata(pe::links_jiff). Only for such a target: Node.js readsTZtoo and turns the POSIX form into an unknown zone at +00:00. The three-letter name is what the C runtime parses (the<+0530>form leaves it at a nonsense offset).3. Two honest limits are added: the 300 ms guard window, and a
TZvariable of the tester's own, which the C runtime and Node.js read before the session zone (measured, not yet reported by the audit). The link preview picture says 45 time channels (guarded by the site build test). The PNG in the repository settings is uploaded by hand.
How it was checked
crates/cli/tests/quick_exit.rs: the command interpreter ending at once gets exit 0 and a family verdict,rundll32.exewith nothing to run gets exit 12.crates/cli/tests/session_zone.rs: the zone of a year under a session, asked by none and by the session's name, and a test binary carrying jiff's source path getsTZ=CMS-5:30while a PowerShell probe under the same kind of session keeps its own.hook_integrity.rscalls the new detour at an odd address.tests/mutation/entries.json.chronocrate shows03:14:07+05:30and03:14:07-07:00with exit 0 (before: this machine's zone and exit 12).Instantstays real at x60 unless--scale-qpc. A jiff program prints+0530 CMS.Notes
CTL_LAYOUT_VERSIONmoves to 13, so a hook and a core from different builds refuse each other, as before.Review round
Two findings from the review, both confirmed in the code and fixed.
run_sessiondrives that ledger. A new test inquick_exit.rsstarts the 32-bit command interpreter from the 64-bit one, both end at once, and the report has to name as many children as it counts (red before the fix: 0 named of 1).notjiff-0.2.37\src\lib.rsandjiff-0.2.37\srcdocboth answered yes. The byte in front ofjiff-may no longer carry a crate name on (a letter, a digit,-or_), andsrchas to be a directory. In three untrimmed programs every path does (12 to 19 each).quick_exit.rsnow says it runs the binary three times.rust-zone eandfre-anchored to the new code,rust-zone htokandquick-exit gadded. All 18 entries of this pull request caught locally.Gatesonc1f8fb0was the network guard alone:quick_exit.rshad no entry in its register (fixed in342d5ad). That failure stopped the test run, so this push is the first CI run ofquick_exitandsession_zone.hygiene,network,names,shape,quick_exitandsession_zonetests plus the CLI unit tests. Full runs are left to CI.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
