Purpose

This is the first Phase 2 item of the BPMN epic (#8898): UserTask outcomes. The epic's "Done when" scenario completes a user task with "approve" and expects the process to take the path for that choice. Today the choice never reaches BPMN routing.

Scope

  • New feature

Description

Problem

UserTask completed with no outcome. The action key went only into its Result. A BPMN userTask bound to UserTask therefore reported no outcome names, so a sequence flow conditional on Approve (vw:conditionOutcome) never matched. A task whose outgoing flows were all conditional faulted the scope with bpmn.flow.none-taken.

Solution

  • Outcomes. A completed UserTask reports Done and the action key it was completed with, including the reserved Timeout and Cancelled. An empty key or Done reports just Done.
  • BPMN. The BPMN scope already passes an activity's Outcomes to the interpreter, so a task's outgoing flows can now route on the person's choice. No BPMN code changes.
  • Flowcharts. A flowchart follows only the connections whose port is among the outcomes. Done is still reported, so existing Done connections are taken as before. UserTask declares no other ports.
  • Docs.
    • user-tasks.md describes the outcomes.
    • The BPMN wiki has a new "Routing on what a task's activity reports" section.

Not covered

  • Gateways. A gateway after the task still can't see the action: the interpreter routes a gateway on its own conditions only. A gateway expression can read the result with getOutputFrom('<processId>:<bindingRef>', 'Result'), but that is not author-friendly. Better expression access is a follow-up, so the docs say to put outcome conditions on the task's own outgoing flows.
  • Flowchart resume in the BPMN runtime test host. A test running UserTask in a flowchart through that host never resumed after the task was completed. The resume is logged, but the bookmark and the activity state stay unchanged. This happens with or without this change, so I left that test out. I'll investigate it separately.

Verification

  • dotnet test core/test/integration/Elsa.Bpmn.Interchange.IntegrationTests: 205 passed.
    • A new theory: a userTask whose flows are conditional on Approve and Reject takes the flow for the action it is completed with. Both cases fail without the change.
    • The existing linear user-task test still passes.
  • dotnet test core/test/unit/Elsa.UserTasks.UnitTests: 135 passed, including a new test that a completion reports Done and its action (Approve, Timeout, Cancelled, Done, empty, null).
  • dotnet build of Elsa.UserTasks on net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0: no errors.

Checklist

  • The PR is focused on a single concern
  • Commit messages follow the recommended convention
  • Tests added or updated (if applicable)
  • Documentation updated (if applicable)
  • No unrelated cleanup included
  • All tests pass

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • BPMN workflows can route directly from a user task based on the action selected to complete it, such as “Approve” or “Reject.” Completed tasks report the “Done” outcome and the selected action. Flowcharts continue through the “Done” connection and connections without a named port.
  • Documentation
    • Updated workflow and forms guidance to explain user-task outcomes and action-based routing, including timeout and cancellation outcomes.

A completed UserTask now reports the outcomes Done and the action key it
was completed with, including the reserved Timeout and Cancelled. A BPMN
userTask bound to UserTask can therefore route its outgoing sequence flows
on the action a person chose (vw:conditionOutcome), which until now never
matched and faulted the scope. A flowchart keeps following its Done
connection.

Walkthrough

UserTask completion now reports default outcomes and, when applicable, the action key. BPMN outgoing sequence flows can use the reported outcomes to select a path. Tests and documentation cover outcome behavior and action-based routing.

Changes: UserTask action routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Report UserTask action outcomes
core/src/modules/Elsa.UserTasks/Activities/UserTask.cs, core/src/modules/Elsa.Bpmn/Hosting/BpmnScopeHost.cs, core/test/unit/Elsa.UserTasks.UnitTests/UserTaskOutcomeTests.cs, core/docs/user-tasks.md
ResumeAsync completes with default outcomes and adds the action key unless it is null, empty, or a default outcome name. BpmnScopeHost filters null outcome names. Unit tests and user-task documentation cover outcome reporting and flowchart routing.
Route BPMN flows by action
core/test/integration/Elsa.Bpmn.Interchange.IntegrationTests/Scenarios/Runtime/BpmnUserTaskTests.cs, core/docs/wiki/bpmn-workflows.md
The integration test checks that Approve runs Ship and Reject runs Notify. The documentation explains routing on task outgoing flows using reported outcomes.

Possibly related issues

  • elsa-workflows/elsa-core#8898 — The issue describes completing a user task with an action such as approve to follow a conditioned BPMN path. This change reports the action as an outcome and tests action-based routing.

Possibly related PRs

  • elsa-workflows/elsa-core#9047 — This PR enables an unbound BPMN userTask to use the Elsa UserTask activity. That activity's action outcomes provide the routing behavior described here.

Completing with only Done and the action dropped the null port of Outcomes.Default, so a flowchart connection that
names no port, as new Connection(task, next) builds it, was no longer followed. UserTask now completes with the
default outcomes plus the action, and the BPMN scope drops the null port before handing outcome names to the
interpreter.

Cover the action-named flowchart edge.

The "Approve" case creates no "Approve" connection. A regression that omits only that edge would pass this test. Add the connection and include it in the expected result for "Approve".

[Claude] ubuntu-latest failed, but not because of a test.

  • The failure: Elsa.Workflows.ComponentTests passed 228 of 228, then coverlet reported a total line coverage of 20.47%, below the 23% threshold.
  • Why it isn't this PR's: in the same project's run on feat(bpmn): accept unbound tasks at import with a placeholder; default userTask to UserTask #9047 (same base, same 228 tests), the total was 35.55%. Comparing the two coverage tables, 24 assemblies this PR doesn't touch dropped to exactly 0%, among them Elsa.Mediator (59.7%), Elsa.Scheduling (51.1%), Elsa.Expressions.JavaScript (46.5%) and Elsa.Testing.Shared.Component (89.8%).
  • Conclusion: coverage wasn't collected for those assemblies on this run. The diff here is about 20 lines in UserTask and BpmnScopeHost, which can't account for that. No fix exists to port, so I'm re-running the failed job once.
