feat(bpmn): accept unbound tasks at import with a placeholder; default userTask to UserTask - #9047
Conversation
…t userTask to UserTask A task that declares no elsa:activityBinding is no longer refused at import or save, so a process can be drawn before it is implemented (import policy ADR, 2026-10-20). A userTask binds to Elsa.UserTasks' UserTask when that module is enabled; any other unbound task binds to a hidden BpmnUnboundTask placeholder that faults if it runs. Publishing refuses a process while a placeholder remains. Import, both PUTs and bpmn/analyze report the placeholder tasks in unboundElementIds. …d, and warn about them (#9048) Since #9047 an import binds a task without an elsa:activityBinding to the Elsa.BpmnUnboundTask placeholder. Studio read that placeholder as a bound activity. Now: - the problems list gains a warning, marked on the task, for each id in the analysis's unboundElementIds; - the Performed by panel names the placeholder as "Not bound"; - the canvas view-model reports such a task as unbound, so it shows "Not bound" and raises its unbound-work diagnostic again. Purpose
This implements the "unbound tasks" and "default bindings" parts of the BPMN import policy ADR, for epic #8898. A task with no
elsa:activityBindingnow imports. It is bound to its type's default activity when there is one, and otherwise to a placeholder. Publishing is refused while a placeholder remains.Scope
Description
Problem
Import refuses any task that has no
elsa:activityBinding(bpmn.import.binding-invalid). That blocks the normal way of working: draw the process first, then decide how each task is performed. The publish gate already refuses to publish an unbound task, so the import refusal adds no protection.Solution
BpmnUnboundTask(Elsa.BpmnUnboundTask,[Browsable(false)]). It is registered in both the module feature and the shell feature, carriesElementIdandTaskType, and faults if it runs.BpmnWorkBinderbinds a task to it when the task declares no binding and its type implies no activity.userTaskwith no declaration binds toElsa.UserTask, titled with the element's name (or its id when it has no name). It does this only whenElsa.UserTasksis registered; otherwise the task gets the placeholder.BpmnActivityBindingFormat.Read, so this module gains no dependency onElsa.UserTasks.ValidateBpmnProcessBindingstreats the placeholder like a missing activity and reports the same "is not bound to an Elsa activity" error.BpmnImportAnalysisModel.UnboundElementIdsis filled bybpmn/analyze,bpmn/import, bothPUTendpoints andPOST bpmn/definitions.BpmnInterchangeDocumentService.ValidateAndFindUnboundTasksis new;Validateis unchanged.BpmnDocumentImportResult.UnboundElementIdsis aninitproperty, so the record's constructor is unchanged.scriptTaskdefault, which needs feat(model): keep a scriptTask's scriptFormat and script valence-works/bpmn#81 released.acceptDegraded).unboundElementIdsas warnings, and showing a placeholder as "Not bound" in the "Performed by" panel. That is the next PR.Release note (upgrade)
bpmn.import.binding-invalidis no longer sent for a task that declares no binding. Such a document now imports and saves, and the task is listed inanalysis.unboundElementIds(unboundElementIdsonbpmn/analyze). The code is still sent for a binding that is invalid, for example one naming an unregistered activity type or an unknown input. A client that matched the code to detect missing bindings should readunboundElementIdsinstead. Publishing is still refused while any task is unbound.Verification
Steps:
dotnet test core/test/integration/Elsa.Bpmn.Interchange.IntegrationTests -f net10.0passed 208 tests.dotnet test core/test/unit/Elsa.Bpmn.Interchange.UnitTests -f net10.0passed 49 tests.dotnet build core/src/modules/Elsa.Bpmn.Interchangesucceeded for net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0 with 0 warnings.Expected outcome:
serviceTask, atask, and auserTaskwithout User Tasks each bind to the placeholder.userTaskwith User Tasks enabled becomes a task titled with the element's name (newBpmnUserTaskDefaultBindingTests).PUTsucceed and reportunboundElementIds;data.elementIdsis still sent for an unregistered activity type.Checklist
